Kinda surprised that tokay geckos didn’t get on the list. Though they’re not nearly as common now, but I distinctly remember how so many pet stores in the 90s kept the little orange spotted demons
My dentist owned one when he was in college. He adored the little ball of rage, even though it managed to crack the bone of his pinky finger one time when it bit him. His roommate hated it though because it made point of making tokay noises as soon as the lights went out and people tried to sleep.

HONestly, I’ve heard of parents getting kids a venomous snake because ‘it looks cool’ and not knowing that it’s venomous simply from not researching. You can imagine how that went...
I was expecting a really docile snake when I got my corn, but she came in as a sassmaster with an unending appetite! Though honestly love her all the more for it, she's also tamed down amazingly with age and is now like a ball python in a corn snake body ❤
I’m so annoyed when people get aquatic turtles for small children. Then the children take horrible care of it and the parents don’t notice or care. I’ve seen it way to much!
My friend had a turtle but when I saw the turtle not having proper lighting A very small box with just water not feeding it properly and they didn't do any research and just got one pissed me off it later died a few days later and I'm not surprised that was a long time ago so I don't remember much so somethings might be wrong.

i'm currently 12 and have 6 reptiles, although my parents buy most of the supplies to care for them and the animals themselves, i'm the one that takes full responsibility for them and cares for them in every way. I do tons of research before getting any pet and so far i'd say i'm doing a good job to keep my pets happy and thriving. I give them the proper diet with a variety of dusted insects, give proper UVB and heating lighting as well as keep the temps and humidity on point. I also give all my pets a bigger enclosure that is recommended as the minimum. I even handle a lot of them daily and work with them. I have a children's python, green anole, russian tortoise, garter snake, pictus gecko, and a jumping spider!
If your child can't take care of an adult tiger after they're at least 2 yrs old, then throw it out and buy a better toddler (PSA THAT IS IMMORAL DON'T DO IT, IT HAS BEEN SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN THAT FIRE IS THE BEST WAY TO DISPOSE OF A TODLER)
Matt Reid, They did, by allowing their child to have a reptile. So if that reptile doesn't do well, the parents are indirectly responsible for it. It also depends on the age of the child, and how responsible the child is. With children under a certain age, you just can't expect them to understand how an animal should be kept correctly without help from their parents.
I know I've said this before but you are REALLY valuable to the hobby since you are capable of thinking like a new reptile keeper. Too often, others don't. Reptiles for kids need to be interactive but not nippy or fragile. Also care needs to be straightforward. Kudos for thinking of pink tongue skinks. That's a good pick. My son actually wants one. However, I keep telling him: are you fine with having and caring for him for 10 years?

My chameleon turns into a slow but hissy and bitey green monster when my hand gets close to it. When I held it first in the store it was nice, very misleading.... Honestly they are definitely not kid pets. They're not even all that hard to keep alive. But to keep a happy healthy chameleon it takes more work than a reptile should
I've had several chameleons (mostly veiled) that were very laid back, but I had one female that was meaner than my tokay gecko and amazon tree boas combined.
30 years ago - gasp - when I lived in San Diego, a friend caught a King snake and decided to make a pet of it. It was not a good pet. It was pissed. It almost always tried to bite us when we tried to handle it. Apparently, wild caught king snakes do NOT make good pets.
As someone who was gifted a wood turtle as a kid, i agree! At the very least the parent needs to do lots of research and make sure the animal is being taken care of if the kid fails. I still have my boy 16 years later and his husbandry is MUCH better, but he still has lasting health issues from the first several years where i and my parents didn't know all of his needs
Love the channel and love supporting locals. From watching your vids I knew you were near but I never thought u would walk into my work lol. Awesome content.
I think as a parent like you said if you get a pet for your kid you have to except that you'll probably have to look after it. My daughter looks after her skink but she needs promoting have you misted have you fed him. She does it all but needs reminding. She got him at 11.
I have a kingsnake (California king, about 2 years old) and I can definitely confirm that she is super food oriented. She’s bit me once, and it was a feeding response to the finger. They are excellent pets and eat well, but I agree that that would traumatize a kid. I work with reptiles and had worked with kingsnakes prior. I’ve noticed they go through a particularly voracious phase and chill out when they mature. They might be a good second snake for someone-a step up from corn snakes for sure.
you are right about kingsnakes and biting. i was told she was a albino corn snake when i bought her, turns out she was an albino kingsnake. all she does is bite and she is always hungry. i still lover her though!
Also corns are easy to get in cool morphs for a great price. My kings backwards he strikes me and not his food lol hes gotten better tho with handling.

I agree 100% on the chelonias, they aren't a temporary pet, and they aren't super easy to care for, and are often miscared for, abused, released, and just overall not cared for properly, they aren't meant for everyone, but they are absolutely amazing animals, just remember to do your research, give them the best care possible, don't be afraid to ask for help, and enjoy your awesome little friends.

I told myself to go to bed around an hour ago.... still watching your videos. I have a 4 year old and 18 month old and we have 2 Herman's tortoises, a leopard gecko and a bearded dragon. However my children are NEVER allowed to be with the reptiles by themselves at this point. Just because of their age and character (they are both pretty wild and squirmy). They love the animals and would never intentionally hurt them but they are kids after all
I ADORE my Savannah monitor!!! But yeah, they really need to stop the import of them because of the astronomical mortality rate in captivity. My guy is the exception to the rule definitely. Good call!
The reason why people buy savannah monitor for kids is because they're cheap and they don't realize that Savannah monitors are not great pets at all like I seen a savannah monitor go as cheap as $50
Funny story about a king snake: I went camping when I was little ( about 8 or 9 ) and it was really hot that day ( I used to live in Northern California), so I went to the creek to cool off. I put my feet in the water and closed my eyes, and (what I believe was ) a yellow California Kingsnake coiled up my leg. I wasn't expecting it and jumped and the poor snake went flying. I found it again and it just slithered right over to me, and I picked it up and he was so chill. But I agree, not for children. Also, don't pick up wild snakes kids lol.
@@danlicata4524 I agree. They are a great snake, and aren't really afraid of people which is awesome. My dog saw a garter snake the other day and the snake and my dog just looked at one another, and the snake went right on past my dog, not a care in the world. I would love to have a garter snake.

You're absolutely right about them being a lot of work and that most kids (and adults) would zone out pretty fast, I was the exception in the house. Nobody else wanted him, but I'd watch him for hours, so he got his food and water changes. I think it's good to get a pet that matches the kid's activity level, personality, and responsibility level; turtles are rarely that pet.

Got my 9 almost 10 yrs old a blue tongue skink, Slytherin is AMAZING and actually will look at my son when he talks to him. He's amazing, so docile and my son literally hangs out with him every day after school he does homework or watches tv. He actually cleans his cage every week and even when he goes to his dads, will call me to video him to make sure Slytherin is good. Lol had him a year now and its a daily ritual of make sure his humidity is good, he's set with all the Temps and the lights are good. I honestly thought I'd be the one with a reptile within 3 months and totally didn't mind having him. I'm so glad my son loves him so much! Slytherin when I care for him on the weekends will watch TV with me and "hide" in my hair and just chill lol
I almost got a turtle when I was about 13 and its a good thing I didn't, I knew like nothing about reptiles and the tank I had would've been awful for a turtle. I didn't get my first reptile til I was 20, a bearded dragon after a ton of research. Also my cousin has a chameleon, hasn't had any health issues but will not tolerate being handled he's mean.
I think most snakes are better for handling they just slither across your hand really chill and you just gotta watch where they go it’s also interesting to watch a snake slither it’s so cool although one thing I hate that snakes do (mine do this) it’s when even when the tip of their tail can latch on to almost any object and they don’t like to let go.
Absolutely! If i were to make a easiest reptile list, Crested Gecko would definitely be my first! Just watch out for tail dropping. there very sensitive to that.
I truly love my bearded dragon, he's a very chill guy and I can trust him with my kid. My leopard gecko is great too, but he is not happy with being handled, very bitey if you try, so no kids get to touch him. He's fun to watch eat, though. He's lightning fast and it cracks my son up. I'd love to add a snake to my collection, but I'm undecided on a king or a corn for the reasons you stated. King's captured my heart when I was a kid but I think getting a corn is the better option, at least until I get more confident with snake care.
Only 1:00 in and I already diss agree if u and ur child won’t a big lizard get a sail fin dragon they are big but not bigger than a savanna monitor but at the same time bigger than a bearded dragon they cost a little bit more then both a savanna and a bearded but housing and feeding them are less expensive then a savanna and in my opinion they are the best beginner pet to get ready for a big lizard like a monitor 😤
@@hannahthefallenangel788 agreed, would not make a good first snake (for a kid or adult) not because of care difficulty, but just because you will want to watch them all the time, and a lot of ksbs you won't see for days or weeks.
I have been keeping reptiles for over 50 years and I will never own a chameleon for all the reasons you discussed. My daughter was a animal whisperer from a very young age and loved reptiles and creepy crawlies. She is now a vet assistant.
It's usually an impulse buy. Usually, a kid sees the animal, think it's cool, and the parent buys it without doing any research, especially if the price is low.
I work at a pet store. I see tons of parents getting pets for their kids thinking the care is easy and the kid can take care of it. They don’t want to listen when I or a coworker give them much needed advise. Most people severely underestimate the needs of reptiles. I had to sell a chameleon to a lady and her daughter. They knew the chameleon would need high humidity and ventilation, they already had a reptibreeze cage. I tried to convince them to get a crested gecko because they’re the closest we had. They said they would spray it during the day and it would be fine. Couple months later it died.
Haha my eldest brother RIP didn't always make the best decisions in life which makes sense when I say he bought a Savannah Monitor "for his kid". It was only "for the kid" in that it lived in a giant enclosure in my nephews room. My brother took damn good care of all his reptiles, though, and is the reason for my love of them.
If you buy a pet for your kid, realise that it is your pet! You can't expect a kid to be interested for the time it takes to care for it, heck, most adults are bad at this.
Thank You for this! I am a kid but I do a lot of research so I knew NOT to get any types of moniters for my first reptile. I convinced my parents to get me a bearded dragon and he is amazing! he doesn't really like handling too too much but I am handling him everyday to get him used to handling. My parents say I can get a 2nd reptile in a year so what do you think is a good choice? I am thinking of a snake or a skink. Thanks, Henry
What a good idea for a video. I hate when I see people say I'm getting my 6 year old a hognose. I'm like.... No. Personally I just think that age they need something that will eat well because they're going to want to hold them.
Research thoroughly, consider their side and provide counterpoints to their argument. Lastly, accept that reptiles aren't cheap and not everyone wants a dead rodent next to their steaks in the freezer, so you might just have to be patient and wait until you have your own place.
Great video! Keep up the good work. Would love to hear your opinion on shingleback skinks. They seem so amazing but impossible to find if you don’t live in Australia.
Leopard geckos and other hardy, easy to keep, handleable reptiles are WAY better than something like a Chamaeleon or big snake for kids. in my opinion 11 is the YOUNGEST a kid should be to get a reptile, Well at less without significant help from a parent or older sibling. (Depending on the kid, sorry forgot the write this part.)
Yup as a child I was bitten on the hand by a wild king snake. I still really love them and I would like one in the future but probably not the top pick for a kid. I had a corn snake too funny enough and he was a super loveable snake.
The TURTLE ONE. People think they're easy, but they're really not. I have two ( a 5 inch red eared, and a 2 inch yellow belly) they're in a 75 gal with a heater, filter, and an above tank basking cage and a floating basking spot below. They get water changes once a week and they're about to need a tank upgrade. They're not cheap, and most people who do have turtles don't even know how to care for them properly.
What’s your opinion on good reptiles for 9 year olds my 1 month old white tree frog died because he was sick and wouldn’t eat or even move :( so what should I get?
I remember one time I was walking my small dog & my neighbors boa got out this thing was 8-10 ft at least. & I saw it at the last minute before my dog stepped on the snake I yeeted my dog as hard as I could to save her little life & the snake barely missed her. I ran home told my mom who didn’t believe me then a week later my neighbor comes by to ask if we have seen their snake 🙄
When you mentioned being reasonable about pets for kids, I was reminded of Youttuber viperkeeper's rant about a woman who bought a king cobra for her 10-y-o son. Viperkeeper is a venomous specialist, but said while he is fond of his snakes, they are NOT PETS. (He had a pet skink, and his wife had a pet savannah monitor.)

@@kintallo5617 our impulse buy was a scarlet macaw...the mom of the parrot in my profile. We still have both her and her son, she's a sassy little brat and he's a sweetheart. The dad is with a friend of mine. I did impulse rescue a western black widow from being Raided in our house. She now has a nice little enclosure in my office. My first snake was planned out (he's a hoggie). The BRB will take time to save up for, esp the enclosure.
Kinda surprised that tokay geckos didn’t get on the list. Though they’re not nearly as common now, but I distinctly remember how so many pet stores in the 90s kept the little orange spotted demons
captive bred isn't so bad, but yeah
My dentist owned one when he was in college. He adored the little ball of rage, even though it managed to crack the bone of his pinky finger one time when it bit him. His roommate hated it though because it made point of making tokay noises as soon as the lights went out and people tried to sleep.
@@Amy_the_Lizard I can only imagine the noise. It's so weird that it's only considered an inconvenience in other countries, but in my corner of the world, their sound is considered a bad omen.
My father bought me one as a child. The way it looked at him.. the way it screeched.. I never interacted with the tokay for obvious reasons, but I remember hearing my dad getting bit by him. Today, as a joke, I ask my father about the tokay and the way it hated him. My father looks not at me, but through me, and says it hated the world..

So after your suggestion of a pink tongue skink i looked them up. Turns out Clint did a video on them almost a year ago. They honestly seem like the perfect pet lizard! I’m now obsessed and cant wait to keep learning about them! Great solution to those who would love a blue tongue but maybe would like something smaller. Anyway, great suggestion and great video as always! You’re becoming one of my favorites to watch!
HONestly, I’ve heard of parents getting kids a venomous snake because ‘it looks cool’ and not knowing that it’s venomous simply from not researching. You can imagine how that went...

I’m so annoyed when people get aquatic turtles for small children. Then the children take horrible care of it and the parents don’t notice or care. I’ve seen it way to much!
right!?

I feel that parents should always do their research when. Their child ask for a pet especially a reptile
100%
100% my friend had a turtle but the parents didn't do any research so it died.

When I visit the California mountains I hold garden snakes. They are so chill! They should be more common in the reptile hobby.
@@danlicata4524 I agree. They are a great snake, and aren't really afraid of people which is awesome. My dog saw a garter snake the other day and the snake and my dog just looked at one another, and the snake went right on past my dog, not a care in the world. I would love to have a garter snake.

I love turtles, used to have a softshell that was my favorite thing ever behind an adult green iguana.

I think most snakes are better for handling they just slither across your hand really chill and you just gotta watch where they go it’s also interesting to watch a snake slither it’s so cool although one thing I hate that snakes do (mine do this) it’s when even when the tip of their tail can latch on to almost any object and they don’t like to let go.
for sure great point

I truly love my bearded dragon, he's a very chill guy and I can trust him with my kid. My leopard gecko is great too, but he is not happy with being handled, very bitey if you try, so no kids get to touch him. He's fun to watch eat, though. He's lightning fast and it cracks my son up.
I'd love to add a snake to my collection, but I'm undecided on a king or a corn for the reasons you stated. King's captured my heart when I was a kid but I think getting a corn is the better option, at least until I get more confident with snake care.

I have been keeping reptiles for over 50 years and I will never own a chameleon for all the reasons you discussed. My daughter was a animal whisperer from a very young age and loved reptiles and creepy crawlies. She is now a vet assistant.
I wonder what the thought process is when adults buy these for kids is, is it only lack of research?
Hi Adam c:
It's usually an impulse buy. Usually, a kid sees the animal, think it's cool, and the parent buys it without doing any research, especially if the price is low.
I'm guessing "It's only a reptile!" plays a part in it.
Come on a kingsnake is not bad! I have a 6month boy that loves to eat but never bites or musks. Also I have a cat. And believe me a cat bite hurts!
I definitely agree with you that corn snakes are the best kind of snake for kids I absolutely adore them

I totally agree
