I spent my early teens and early 20s reading early Cyberpunk ( William Gibson and Walter Jon Williams ), and was playing CP2020 and 2022. I had no idea my middle age years would be living in a proto-version of that without the cool cybernetics. Citizen Sleeper was a good time and got how broken the Cyberpunk worlds were supposed to be.
I'm right with you brother. All the dystopia none of the cool toys besides this phone (I have to replace every now and then because I crack the glass).
It strikes me as unbelievable that I have not found a single Planescape: Torment video on your channel. From what I can see in your videos it's the pinnacle of what you're usually after. One of the most brilliant writings in an RPG game with unique lore beyond fantasy AND universe with many stories intertwined together in admirable wisdom and philosophy scratching the deepest questions within. Why?
End of the video and I've tears in my eyes... I didn't want to play the game since I'm a gameplay player but I'm happy you made a video that gives so much emotion telling the story. Thank you ♥
One of the most impactful and thought provoking gaming experiences of the last few years for me. I can't wait for the sequel and the TTRPG. Thanks for the great video as always, dude! 🙌
While I think your other conclusions are lovely, your perspective of Ethan is...wildly optimistic. Lol, great video all the same. I do love your takeaway. 😊
1:50 If I had a nickel for every time a cryptic event named the collapse caused humanity to go on the bring of extinction. I would have two nickels which isn't a lot but it is weird that it happened twice.
Even in a game that only a few people who know it you can find somthing , a meaning that you can't find anywhere else , at least not the same way Thanks for highlighting this amazing game who is not getting enough care and thanks for reminding us that you can find hope in humanity no matter what
I found your channel because this is one of my favorite games. I havent watched the whole video yet, but the first few minutes have made me confident enough to subscribe. It's such a touching and deep game
This was my GOTY in 2022 and deservedly so. The nuances of just surviving on a space station at the edge of the Galaxy is immaculate. And every story will have you tearing up and wishing that you had not been cursed to experience their pain but also thankful that you got a taste of the human experience.
4:55 So, you're telling me that many actions have a deadline; you only get a limited choice of potential actions; and all actions have an uncertain outcome? How is this _not_ a simulation?
I've been in your channel for just 10 minutes and already like it more than any other. I specially like that you use different games in your videos and don't just use the same games over and over. keep up the good work✌🏻
When I first played this game, and I had to choose between staying in The Cloud or returning, I literally had to sit there and think for almost an hour. It was without a doubt one of the hardest decisions I've ever made in a video game. I decided to decline the offer and return, and that line of waking up honestly brought tears to my eyes. I cried again while stepping onto the ship with Lem and Mina and the ending scene that follows it. It's a beautiful game.
This was a very unique game for me, my gaming catalogue is mostly the hits, big action/adventure games focused on combat and violence, but with a nice sprinkling of story to it. But when I was unemployed, bored, and cynical I got this game free on Xbox game pass. It was such a refreshing experience that I had never done before, just text and story with minimal gameplay. That is surprisingly the most immersed I’ve ever been in any game to date. Might revisit this now!
Yup it's a thought-provoking trip what really got me was helping Lem and Mina their story broke me to tears for a minute. Theses kinds of games aren't usually my cup of tea but a well written story with the right somber vibes and taking in the world it's based around you'll find yourself more immersed then you expected.
I love Guillaume Singelin's art, I wish we could get a videogame of his FRONTIER world though... it's kinda like a sci-fi chibi astronaut/explorer comic.
One of the best things I’ve found is just how amazing the game is at making the day to day seem alive. Like I’m sure we all have those days where we do the same shit on end for what feels like forever, each action making the monotony worse, but not in this game. This game I am EXCITED to try and fix a colony ship just because this guy and his adopted daughter want to get on. Or going tot he same food stand everyday and telling stories to the owner in exchange for soup because you two like sharing stories. It is normal, everyday bs, but it makes you like doing it, because to not would be to die. Alone and afraid. And at the end of the day, that’s a powerful message even if you don’t fully realize it.
I found this game on game pass. I was frustrated with it as first, but When I was about to say F it, the game threw me a bone. 48 hours later I just bought it from the game store. Great game. Great story. Haven’t even come close to finishing (just finally gave food vendor his mushrooms, hasn’t finished the dish yet. I don’t know where this game is going, but it’s great guys; give it a go.
I loved this game! Made me question my relationship with my own community. In this game even the thugs existence is linked with the symbiosis they have with the people around them. Though you might be a copy of a human you are still alive because of the relationships you culture with the people around you. An allegory to the complex connected world we live in.
I thought this video was gonna be about Concord because that game also makes you rethink life or about humanity. But that's a different kind of rethinking.
This isn't my type of game, but your video made me want to be a better person. Videos like these may be the start to a better world. Have a blessed one.
Im got some nitpicks. Now keep in mind i an also a fan of citizen sleeper. So what i focus on is you say “a fallen society” saying ai had something to do with it. The collapse was a localized event for the eye, rather than some grand thing. There was a palladium mining rush here, decades ago, and when the market collapsed, the corporation running the eye squeezed everyone even harder and loosening regulations. This leads to tragedy that devastates and nearly destroys the eye. In the wake of corporate abandonment, Havenage, the union, seizes control. Society hasnt fallen, your just in a place after the market fell through, in desperate straights, the forces that be are just as avaricious as they were before. Ai was always regulated, checks put in place to ensure it didnt become sapient, thats why hunter-killer programs exist. But with the collapse, many ai were able to develop freely. I think something you should keep in mind for analysis one of the major themes of citizen sleeper is that solidarity and building a community to resist capitalist pressures, the game pretty much becomes easy once you built things up in the hypha commune. Personally, i stayed on the eye, i helped the refugees, and i resisted corporate takeover, i liked the ending i got. I do want see the other ones though.
