I think it is a pride issue. People aren't humble enough to admit they are sinners, or that they do wrong. They don't want to admit they deserve hell. They seek no truth. They seek not God. How can you believe on what Jesus did if you don't recognize why he saved you to begin with. The Word is the truth. I notice most churches these days do not delve in the Word like Gene does. I am so happy I found Gene's channel. The Word is God and no one seeks God, or the Word. They think they don't have to see the Word or read the Word to understand God. The problem these days is people aren't interested in what the Bible says.

God tells us in Romans chapter 1 why all do not come to God when called.
God basically tells us it is common sense to know we are flawed sinful imperfect.
The Devil Made a Saint out of Me - Another way to say it is, nothing is worth bad memories. Joseph surely gained divine wisdom due to the horrific pain he endured.
Sinners reject Jesus because Satan the god of this world has blinded their minds in the event the Word of God illuminates their life. Sinners love darkness over light.
