I went to a 3 day training camp in Arizona with Tanaka Sensei about 35 years ago in the late 80s. Not only did we do "Duck waddles" and hundreds of other brutal exercises one of which you had to take a partner and do handstand push ups. If your partner couldn't do them. You had to help them. You had to pull them up and down. I was in my twenties and an ex-gymnast, I could do about half of them but only with the help of my partner keeping my balance. Sensei was in the middle of the floor upside down in a handstand, yelling at everyone to push up. He did them quickly without anyone holding his legs! He was alone doing handstand push ups in the front of the gymnasium and counting to 50. Everything he did was amazing! Including knocking my legendary JKA Sensei on his ass. Another one of them was having everyone do Tekki Kata's and he would correct everyone by standing on your hips. He would then jump to the next person hips without touching the floor. He would say something like "Don't make me fall down." or "don't drop Sensei." He was as agile as a monkey jumping from one tree to the next. He did this for an hour. We died a Thousand deaths. Wish I had a picture. Those were the days...
So many memories. One that always comes to mind is Sensei making us do “Duck Waddles” followed by squatting front kicks for twenty minutes, BEFORE the start of class. OSS !!
