Some great examples of real fighters here. The one that stood out for me in both Kata & Kumite was Yahara Sensei. He had that rare ability to surprise with sparring & his kata could be mesmerising.

Seems like you’re stuck on the name Frank. So here’s a Frank to think on - Frank Smith, of Southern California. His Sensei, by the name of Nishiyama, severely limited his competing, why I don’t know. But Frank Smith, when he was permitted to compete, totally dominated US championships through the middle 60s and beyond. I still wear some scars from Frank.

@@williamtetrault1300 US shotokan very very low level in comparison with Europe. I'll check this Frank Smith who he is . As regarding Hidetaka Nishiyama his so called traditional karate is so rigid and stiff nothing to compare with enoeda , shirai or taiji Kase . So Brennan totally different breed. Also South Africa had excellent fighters in shotokan

You can't expect from a style that has discarded protective gear to employ full-contact blows ! The use of thick gloves and chest-protection, like in Kick-boxing and Tae Kwon Do detract a lot of essense, as compared to the (brutal) realism. In the broad sense of meaning all the fighting methods are point-sparring. In my opinion, a combination of high-tech protective gear and semi-contact rules of behaviour may be the best way to recreate realism in the future. A fithing environment that allows even (filtered) hits to the sensitive points like the solar-plexus, the throat and the private parts,, all protected by state-of-the-art lightweight materials, in combination with semi-control, whenever those targets are concerned, can be qualified as the closest approximation towards realism. And of course the points awarded system observed by the referees should be devised in consultation with medical experts.
