    This week’s film breakdown analyzes the Denver Broncos Quarterback Russell Wilson and his issues seeing the middle of the field. The Broncos have kicked off the year as the second lowest-scoring offense in the NFL, and the Russell Wilson offense has not cooked whatsoever to say the least. He’s always had issues seeing the middle of the field, but now it’s worse than ever, plus there are even a couple of other issues. What has happened to this unit in 2022 and what are the other issues that have arisen? This week’s episode uses the all-22 coaches film to analyze Denver Broncos Quarterback Russell Wilson.

      All Russell need to do is talk to Drew Brees to find out how Brees saw the middle of the field..Russell can hit the crosser in a different window than he supposed to..He can take a deeper drop..He can move a little to the right or left to see past the Oline. Oline can get creative. They can push the Dlineman 2 steps in the opposite direction of the WR's route to create a lane for Russell to see.

    I'm honestly baffled they aren't using more roll out to get Russ into space. I think you nailed it with his vision and height being unable to see the middle of the field from the pocket. So no true Scottsman?
      Russ used to regularly put up video game numbers, but he has never been the same since the week 7 game against AZ in 2020. I personally fall into the camp of thinking he got a concussion that was never diagnosed. Then he came back too soon after the ruptured tendon in his finger and was playing with an injured ankle on top of that.
      He spent his whole career being "too short," and yes it was something he always had to learn to work around. Ultimately, he didn't give himself enough time to heal and I think that is what was his downfall.

      He is still plenty mobile. Highlights of him running effective outside the pocket. The broncos need to shape their offense. Getting outside the pocket more. He is short. So in the pocket has always been a problem. Change the pass blocking. To create more passing lanes. Plus over time he will develop more chemistry with the receivers. Hell have go deeper in the pocket. Have more receivers running deeper routes. A big thing is run the ball alot more. Set up deep routes with play action.

    I remember reading thing in years after their super bowl appearances, playoff miss, that Russell thought he could be the next Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Bress and have the offense build around him, him throwing it around, go much more spread offense, and it was natural evolution to try to accomplish, you have a QB that's been improving every year, support players moved on because of age or price, add Russell's big contract extension, I believe I read after the Seahawks missed the playoffs, Pete Carroll threw in the towel and went back to the power running game. I specifically remember the articles said that defensive players thought they had another super bowl appearance or even two and possibly another title if Pete Carroll just stuck to the formula that worked instead of trying to placate Russell Wilson and his desire for QB stardom.

  • @206guy5
    @206guy5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    As a Seahawks fan, one of the reasons why Russ found offensive success in Seattle is because of his great wide receivers. Russ is very dependent on deep balls to receivers is expecting the receiver to win the one on one and catch the ball. Especially when he’s getting blitzed. When you see Russ getting blitz, he most likely just chucks a beautiful deep ball as he can’t see the middle of the field because of the amount defenders coming to get him. This worked in seattle because of dynamic receivers like Baldwin, Lockett, Metcalf and even Jimmy Graham, and Golden Tate who are speedsters aside from Graham that could create separation. I don’t think Courtland is a speedster receiver. Juedy is good and fast but more of route running guy. However, Russ has found KJ Hamler of deep balls a couple of times. Russ trust Hamler because his speed on verticals.

    Feels like once every couple of years I see a video talking about how he can't see or doesn't target the middle of the field due to his height. It sucks but he needs to have some Steve Young in him and throw with anticipation even when he can't see. Young talked about it when he was learning the west coast offense and even joked about not being able to see his receivers but throwing it anyway. Or Russ can do the Drew Brees thing and be happy foot in the pocket to wiggle into different throwing windows to get a snapshot of the field. But that's up to Russ.

Then when he got older, more beat up from taking to many sacks from holding the ball.... and his height finally came into play because he couldn't scramble like Tarkenten any more. Now he was over-rated, just as the Broncos traded for him and gave him that contract. Russell could still prove us all wrong, but maybe not until next year when the Broncos retool.

If anyone thinks they run this stuff in practice and russ simply doesn't see the middle of the field and the offensive coaches say "keep that play in there because since he isn't coming back to the slant in practice he will definitely do it in the game" It seems to be a comfort thing. Russ doesn't like to throw picks and at this point in his career he can definitely anticipate who will be open based on the coverage. He's just not pulling the trigger and that scares me more than him simply not knowing someone is open.

Also, the Seattle receivers' he always had were used to his style and grew with him. Baldwin, Lockett, all the TE's... they knew how to improvise and react to his abilities. The game was tied in the beginning of the 4th quarter and the offense managed to go three and out. Then they get a gift interception from Herbert and get the ball on the Chargers 25yd line and proceed to go three and out again and settle for a FG. The Chargers tied with a FG of their own and the Broncos then proceed to go three and out two more times before going into over time. They get the ball in OT and go three and out again, Chargers go down the field and kick a FG for the win.
    Russell is done and should retire and these three bum receivers aren’t helping out much either. All of this hype about Sutton and Jeudy and they never do jack squat. They suck and this team is the most boring team in the league. I’d rather watch grass grow. Retire Russ.
