Excellent review. I have one on the way. Can't wait. I like odd, obscure Spyderco knives.

Filipino pakal in English - ice pick
Saksak is Stab. The normal way we hold a knife. We train both grips.

An interesting story to go with an odd looking knife. Usually knives for fighting are bad at EDC uses. Glad to hear this one is a good EDC as well.

It’s got some swayback vibes, imo.
Like you’d hold it in a saber grip with the edge up and your thumb on the space between the edge and choil.
I think a serrated edge version would work well with the blade shape too.
    Thanks for the review!

It's cool that spyderco is willing to make knives for such niche users. Not for me, but it wasn't intended for me.

Love your videos sir ....... anyway you can do something about the wind noise going forward? It has been pretty bad on the last handful of vids.

The Pikal is used in Kali...the blade centric Filipino martial art. A Pikal has a unique style and tactics that are very specific to that shape.

I am 100% for protecting loved ones and self to the fullest extent of my abilities. But, it is also important to not “romanticize” the Pikal style knife. In a self defense situation, and your current state laws, the use of excessive force can wind you up in a heap of legal shit! However, how do you gauge how much force you need to use? Is it just open hands, closed fist for striking, grappling/wrestling, a knife, a gun, and improvised weapon? Ed Calderon is making popular a pikal style knife. It’s been around for a long time in the Philippines. But, realize that slashing and NOT stabbing (as in the Pikal knife) may look more as a defensive act and not an aggressive one. It’s all perception, and hopefully the police investigation will see it that way. Hopefully you will know when stabbing becomes the only alternative. Of course slashing in/around the neck, brachial and femoral arteries can make anyone bleed out quickly as well. It’s all a crap-shoot as far as the aftermath goes. Obviously you want to be the one still breathing at the end of a self defensive situation. In that case ignore everything I just said😂
