as a filipino american, i love how us filipinos made a lot of people think that the karambit came from p.i. (philippine island), even filipino ourselves, when it actually came from west sumatra, indonesia. us filipinos just popularized them

Patrick is a very good teacher and mentor for my son. He has given alot of his time for free to teach women how to defend and empower themselves. He is a wealth of knowledge. The three qualities I look for in a teacher are humilty, honesty and gratitude. He has all three. Thank you Patrick and Blade HQ for this video.

George displays such a common human reaction after he serves as a human dummy for the knife work by crossing his arms and legs to protect himself. He just shouted his vulnerability and showed us that the nice guy vibe is not an act. George, you are the kind of men I want as my neighbour.

A Fox Karambit with the wave saved me from being robbed right before Christmas. I saw the guy creeping up on me and still with my nervous energy I just grabbed the ring pulled and you heard that "Click" loud and clear. I also grabbed my Streamlight. The guy turned around and ran.

I was a combatives instructor in the Army. I have been a martial science instructor since I was 15. I teach my students to do exactly what you mentioned in that, even though I had a 4000 square foot school, we trained all the time in the parking lot between cars. We also wore sneakers, boots and the women (that regularly wore them), wore high heels.
It is rare that you will get attacked in a huge open space with comfortable clothes and choreographed attacks.

As he's showing techniques for attacking the face, as someone who has been in quite a few scraps let me tell you that it takes very little to make the face bleed. Anywhere on the face bleeds HEAVILY. I once got the outside corner of my eye split open by just a mm and that entire side of my face was covered in blood and the eyelid had to get stitched back up. It's very brutal.

Regarding OTF's, they're also one of the safest knives you can carry, as you never have to touch the blade unless there's a malfunction. Still, even if a malfunction takes place, the blade only goes front to back. Thus lessening the likelihood of accidentally coming into contact with the sharp edge(s).

Bastinelli knives are highly underrated. I own a black bird and a piceour. No wonder lots of the students carry a blackbird, I like its ergo in forward and reverse grip. It isn't that big for smaller hands compared to most karambit folder.
The piceour aka scalpel is super crazy sharp. like scarry sharp. I've seen the videos with the pork flesh and I don't doubt it that it can do some serious damage! Build quality on both are spot on!
I like a karambit style knife for self defense. People think too much about flings and stuff when in reality, the karambit is an extension of my wrist. If you know how to throw a straight and a haymaker, after you learn how to deploy the knive, you more or less know how to use it. You can slash and deploy in one motion which is huge when u lay on the ground. More training is better, but I think the so called high learning curve of a karambit is a myth. I've heard lots of stories from women using the 599 for self defense.

Cutting through the B.S. ( pun intended) :
    1) Bigger is better in a knife fight but bigger knives aren't comfortable to carry.
    2) Fixed blades are the fastest, strongest and most foolproof to deploy. Forget folders for when your fine motor skills will be degraded. Folders are out.
    3) Check out the Colonel Blades knife. Push daggers might be good too.
    4) Reverse grip gives you less reach. Use an underhand grip for tightness, not the "effective grip" used for carving a turkey. Forget the reverse grip and fancy transitioning. Use an underhand grip or buy the Colonel Blades knife.
    5) A black knife is harder for an opponent to see in the dark. You can feignt with a shiny knife and stab with a black knife.
    6) Tantos and some others have tips that won't break easily. Double edged knives are hard to block or grab. Thin daggers are easy to drive into the target. Skip serrated , partially serrated or saw-tooth equipped.
    7) Get a hand guard or at least a knife your hand won't slide down resulting in a cut hand when you stab.
    8) Stabbing works better than slashing.
