  • Sprinter Build Series Episode 2: In this installment of the Sprinter Van Build series we look to beat the heat!!! Follow along as we install our Dometic RTX2000 AC unit in the roof of our Mercedes Cargo Sprinter Van. We tried to include all the steps and information on how to make this a successful install and learn from some of the minor inconveniences we encountered along the way. This video does not cover the electrical hookup as that will be covered in the upcoming house battery installation video.

    I read on DIYVAN to use the flexseal or dicor to finish sealing the adapter to the roof. Did you guys ever do that or just the bead of window weld did the trick ?

    • @moonrakerdesign
      @moonrakerdesign  ปีที่แล้ว

      We did FlexSeal over top on the Maxxfan install video since there’s screws through for mounting there. I was thinking about it on the A/C, but honestly after inspecting the Windoweld after it dried it sealed around the edges really well. So far it’s been holding up great with no issues. If you are worried about it the FlexSeal is pretty cheap insurance.

    Thanks! I watched dozens of RTX 2000 install videos, some from pro builders and you are the ONLY one that showed pre drilling the holes for the brackets and trim! Some may not think to do that. My RTX is sitting in my home waiting for my sprinter to be delivered and I was searching for this! Glad I found your video in time. Great job!👍

    Thanks very much for you detailed tutorial on this install we did exactly as you did with the spacers. However we are at the point where we need to do just as you did with the custom fab bar. Any luck on posting that video we’d love to see it! Great job

      Hey Jonathan, thanks for stopping by and for the kind words! Glad to hear you are following the same route! We ended up posting our video of those custom fabricated bracket here -> th-cam.com/video/avUskaaj7Qs/w-d-xo.html. Admittedly, the way we manufactured them does take some specialized tools but I think you could do something pretty similar with a metal cutting jig saw (or even hacksaw) if you used square bar stock for the counterbore bits instead of the round ones we turned on the lathe. Let us know if you have any questions and thanks again.

    Nice install. Just a tip for your toolbox. Grab a set of countersink bits for your drill, and kiss your holes with them as a way of deburring non-uniformly much more easily than the deburring whip you've shown.

    • @Mobilexdbx
      @Mobilexdbx ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll leave this one up for lolz, but ignore my suggestion. Watched some more of your content and you're obviously a very competent fabricator! Seriously underrated. Nice work! Subscribed!

    • @moonrakerdesign
      @moonrakerdesign  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey thanks for stopping by, subscribing, the kind words and you are right so I think it’s a great tip. The countersink is much more suited for cleaning up these holes. Unfortunately I didn’t have one big enough at the time of making this video so I used the deburring tool. I’ve since bought a set as you can see in the Maxxfan video! Thanks again!

    The RTX2000 is $2300, way too expensive which forced me to look for alternative. Now i found a split system that i can install under the van for $900. Best yet, i can use the roof area for more solar panels.

    • @moonrakerdesign
      @moonrakerdesign  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey @AZRockRunner that’s great and the wonderful part about building a van, you can choose the options that work for you and your goals. It would help everyone in your same situation if you’d share the information of the product you’ve found!
      The RTX2000 is no doubt a big investment, but it’s from a brand we trust and from our previous experiences with Dometic we’ve had great customer service and know they stand behind their products and make quality stuff. I often find in the long run, for me, that’s worth paying for.

    Great video thank you! I purchased that air saw you recommended. What blade are you using? The one that came with it is a little to fine and didn’t cut my max air hole so well.

    • @moonrakerdesign
      @moonrakerdesign  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Mike, thanks for the kind words and for stopping by. I use the Ingersoll Rand P4FS-6 blades. I swap blades after each project and on the bigger cuts like windows and flares I do a fresh blade per side.
      You could also try P4EV-6 if you wanted something a little more coarse, but I’ve never used them.

    Hey! In preparation for custom fab(ulous) bars, what are the 110 fully threaded bolts you got? Couldn’t find the link in description. Can you drop it here? Thanks again!

    • @moonrakerdesign
      @moonrakerdesign  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Lauren, good call. I've added it the description both on this & the bracket video. amzn.to/3XQ9sb8. You might want to hold off for just a bit though. I'm redoing the bracket design to make it more manufacturable an overall less expensive for everyone interested in them. I'll know in the next few days when I make the new prototype if these exact bolts will still work! Thanks again for the support!

    Hi where do you get these brass embedded nut and the spacer

    • @moonrakerdesign
      @moonrakerdesign  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately, you have to buy the mounting kit to get the brass nuts, but you can probably find something similar on McMasterCarr if you measure the size of the holes. As for the space they came from @diyvan. Link is in the description!

    Will this ac run with a Bluetti AC200P (2000wh) using the 12v/10a connection? Or does this have to be connected to the driving battery in a Promaster 3500?

    • @moonrakerdesign
      @moonrakerdesign  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Funzee, it will not. The max continuous power draw is up to 54 Amps and Dometic recommends a 80A breake inline. It will not run on the driving battery either, you need a dedicated house battery setup. I would say 200AH lithium MINIMUM and probably better off in the 400-600AH range if you are looking to run it for extended periods of time.

    • @funzeevanzee
      @funzeevanzee ปีที่แล้ว

      @moonrakerdesign Thank you so much for your response. So, are the truck drivers using those style batteries to run the ac in their semi trucks?

    • @moonrakerdesign
      @moonrakerdesign  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@funzeevanzee of course! Yes, they must. Here's a good resource I found from Dometic files.ecommercedns.uk/247291/3e19d88ef57b782b8d228901f86e9c98.pdf. In the first paragraph it supports my previous recommendations by stating "The battery capacity available to power the parking cooler must be greater than 170 Ah. To guarantee an optimal operating time, a 225 Ah battery or greater is recommended." Let me know if you have any other questions!

    Hello Hello !! What do you think about the Nomadic X3 48v?

    • @moonrakerdesign
      @moonrakerdesign  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s super nice, especially if you are doing a 48VDC power system. It wasn’t around and higher voltages weren’t that popular when I put my AC in. I think if I were to do it again. I’d seriously consider a Nomadic even 12VDC just because of the lower stack height. Having to raise the AC up to save the interior height isn’t as elegant of a solution.
