    That truck has had a handful of transmission and engine failures. Had a hard previous life in fleet use and previous owner extreme towing. I know the guy who built it. Glad you're getting it sorted.

      Thanks, yea I think this truck has had more life than most ever see, will be an endless project but I still love it.

      @@MortonsontheMove I would recommend to never buy a modified or rebuilt anything. Endless problems mechanical and electrical. Well maintained high mileage UNTOUCHED is way better than a "rebuilt better than stock"! They never last. It makes for interesting video content for you, but if it were mine it just makes for stress for me.

    You are amazing. Cheers to the mechanic that helped you out above and beyond.
    Fingers crossed.
    BTW I enjoy receiving your emails and articles.
    Thank you

    Impressive artistry of your mechanic. I can only imagine how challenging it was to get to the source of the problems, not to mention, the expense of basically rebuilding your transmission & all other replacement. Looks sharp. Happy for you that it is back up & running.

      Thanks, yea it was quite the challenge to figure out what was going on... Just kept tearing down, measuring checking etc... Luckily my mechanic really knows his stuff!

    Your are lucky to have a relationship with a good mechanic. Good for you. Nice video.

      Yes I was very lucky to find him. Very few people want to touch this truck, let alone mod it further.

    Definitely did a number on that rod. Hopefully he magnafluxed that crank. Sorry to see you go through the hassle of putting a new head on it just to find out later that you also bent a rod. Been there done that unfortunately. Learned my lesson about measuring for piston projection that day! Good luck with things

    I make the block for that engine. They are good engines. Been around for over 100 years now. Can’t beat the classics

    That’s the best way to break in is to run it under a load so this should be a great break in !

    You need to clean that frame and coat it with something to keep it from rusting and if you get it super clean you could spray a epoxy primer and a few coats you won’t get a chance to do this once you put it back to gathering and I hope it all works out and the cab and chassis’s are destined engines and the 3500 have HO motors and I think the guy that changed cam and injectors was turning the power back up to Ho power my 05 Dodge 3500 stick is a Ho motor at 325 hp .

    on Class A Diesel trucks, sometimes when rebuild the top end and not also rebuild the bottom end, the engine rebuild is not successful for too long since the rebuilt top end is putting more pressure on the bottom end than before. Must have been a tough decision to not use a remanufactured Cummins engine sold by Chrysler versus the cost of this rebuillt engine replacement

    • @MortonsontheMove
      @MortonsontheMove  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was a tough decision, but we had already done a lot when it came to the block issues...at that point I wanted to know everything about the engine myself, tested, measured and checked everything over which felt good to do in person.

    I am clueless with all things mechanical - I do travel full-time in the travel trailer and one thing that hits me is what can go wrong and how ‘bad’ it can be. Wish I had one tenth your knowledge.

    • @MortonsontheMove
      @MortonsontheMove  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, we push the limits, and a long with that comes complexity and problems. Luckily there are a lot of great people out there that can help with most anything. 😀

  • @HDRider1601
    @HDRider1601 ปีที่แล้ว

    It appears you’ve mixed your rockers and push rods. This is a big no no. The push rods and rockers should ALWAYS go back together as a pair matched to the way they came out.

    • @MortonsontheMove
      @MortonsontheMove  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It was a new cam, tappets, pushrods trunnions .. the cast rockers are all that was reused so no didn't mix them up. As for retorquing the head they were kept track of and replaced in the same spot.... I'm not sure how big of a deal it would be anyway though, as long as you inspect and polish.

    A little off-topic here but I just ran across you guys and I figured maybe you guys might have an idea. So I want to put a limited mega cab off of either a 2500 or 3500 chassis on a limited 5500. How easy can this be done, also would it be best to go to an 84 cab to axle config? I’m hoping it’s a quick and straightforward operation especially since both will be S.O diesel models. Thoughts??

    • @MortonsontheMove
      @MortonsontheMove  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry I missed this, did you figure it out. Physically it should fit ok, as I believe the mounting points are all the same, but the ECM matching might be trouble with the computers. I dont think impossible, but it would be a lot of figuring. The Engines in the 5500 are not the same (ECMs are different along with a few parts)

    Let me start by saying many of your videos are very informative.
    As a diesel guy this pains me to watch. Is there a reason you didn’t check deck height when the head was off the first time?

    • @MortonsontheMove
      @MortonsontheMove  ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't do the first build, bought it done and hoped it was done right, learned a tough lesson.. They had decked the head and there were clearance issues... Part of why I switched cams, all in spec now.

    parking on steep incline is never good for any engine.. they are designed to be parked on mostly flat ground. interesting story.

  • @brentmcmahon8188

    To me them huge tires

    • @brentmcmahon8188
      @brentmcmahon8188 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The tall tire put a lot of strain on the drive line and they change your gear ratio if you don’t have some super low gears . The best for what you are using that truck I would put factory tire back on and you won’t be putting so much strain on your diffs and transmission and transfer case and your engine will not lug and make everything happy .

    • @MortonsontheMove
      @MortonsontheMove  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This truck has 4.88 diff so the big tires are not a problem at all combined with the manual trans. I agree it degrades towing, but this truck doesent tow heavy, its for clearance. I actually bought these tires off a guy who had them on a kodiak and was trying to tow but didnt have any power, so went back to stock. He didnt have as steep of a gear ratio either.

      I have a 2011 F-350 ("SuperDuty" for those that don't know) with the 6.7, and I love it. BUT my 2011 Ford uses DEF (yeah it's stock) and the 2011 RAM does not, so that's something to think about.
