Interesting to hear you talking about it. Despite tiny flaws I loved The Books of Jakob, but the history of Poland is a well known concept to me (oh modest me), but even to most Poles the history Tokarczuk writes about is not well known. BTW Ch like in Chmielowski in Polish is always pronounced like H in home, for the lack of better sound. Lovely daughter you have, and pierogi look great! Oh and the song, Olga needs to hear it :-)

Amazing review - informative and entertaining.😀 I've read and liked Drive Your Plow Over The Bones Of The Dead by this author but this book has defeated me so far. Hopefully some day.
maybe you're the guy who'll finally explain to me the ethnic, cultural and political divide which separates the 2 old spies in Infinite Jest....that aspect of the book has always puzzled me and as yet no one has provided any insight. enjoying this one...btw.
Well this is entertaining, but I have yet to make a decision as to whether I'll be reading this tome. Having listened to you, I wonder if this book is as dense as The Eighth Life, which I spent a rather long time reading and ended up calling a favourite. It is certainly one to mull over, even if it does sound weird as heck. (Tha certainly put a lot of work into this review and that ought to be commended.)
Having read Eighth Life I feel like I can opine! This is MUCH more dense and complex than Eighth Life. But it is also much more of a serious literature, although I love Eighth Life too
@@mgenkin Thank you for this. I suppose it's going to be a case of just doing what I've done with other hefty tomes and taking it slow. (I don't suppose you've read The Brothers Karamazov? I'm trying to think of parallels in my head and I'm feeling like if I managed that, then I can manage The Books of Jacob.)
"Are you just innately curious about Polish history?" "Yeah." 🤣🤣🤣 Absolutely loved your "Change My Mind" meme and the musical section. 10/10 would highly recommend this review. 😊
I heart your videos. By a chance can you recommend an amazing translated book? I have been on translated book journey this year and want to keep it going? Just out of recommendations now. Thanks
Luckily for you, I seem to mostly read and review translated works now 😂 Check out Kawakami’s Heaven, Schalansky’s Inventory of Loss, any Solzhenitsyn, Vuillard’s The War of the Poor, and Xue’s We Live in the Slums (all of those I have reviews on 😊)
I've been reading this book on and off for over a year. I was thinking about dnf-ing but your video has spurred me to carry on. It's beautifully written, but I came in knowing nothing so most things are going straight over my head
The Books of Jacob is by far the most boring book I've ever read. I wish I had read a textbook on Marxism or an adventure from a nursing home instead. It would be much more fun. This book shortened my life by at least three years. Total utter sh.t. The Nobel prize was given just because the sect described in the book is very strong nowadays. Rating 2.2/10. It's not 1 just because she invested an enormous amount of her time in researching.
It's good, but not summary. I just needed the summary through book wise and at least to have summary before buying book. Sir, Your review is obviously good and helpful, and loving but it would be helpful if you just tell me summary in short. I'm having a project writing on this, have to select two books of Olga Tokarczuk.
