Something my sister said that really stuck with me after I cringed for the 10th time is that if the straights deserve cringe sweet unrealistic romances, then so do the gays
@@ntbored7727 wait, i thought the joke was because rugby is british english and football is american english he meant to say it was because henry was british? dunno haven't watched the film just context clues
I will say the “reason they hate eachother” is much more explored in depth in the books Alex dislikes Henry because he was a dick to him when they first met and also because he’s tired of being constantly compared to Henry and having to try harder than him. Henry never really dislikes Alex. He actually is attracted to him from their first meeting but was rude to him because he was still grieving his father. Then Alex was hostile to him from there on out and Henry just matched his energy because it was easier than admitting he had a crush on him.
i think the movie kinda robbed it of that whole energy bcs alex just said the comparison thing at the beginning rather than admitting it in the closet for the first time tbh
@@ChaoticArtCat The closet scene was done so much better in the books. It was the first time they were ever vulnerable with each other and the movie didn’t so it justice.
as someone who hasn't read the book, I really liked this movie. is it cheesy? yes. is it set in a totally ideal world? sure. but sometimes, that's fun to watch.
I’m glad you watched the movie first. It’s way lighter than the book and you won’t be comparing the differences between the two if you watched it first 😂
We had to go through cheesy romcoms with a male and female for decades now, LGBTQ+ community deserves to go through that same cringeworthy setup with gays for a start aswell and i´ll happily watch and cringe and laugh the same i have been before. Doesn´t have to be a fancy concept for a movie now all of a sudden, it´s still a romcom - the fancy concept are the two male main characters
The book takes a longer time developing the relationship and making it richer, but for a two hour movie adaptation, I think they did an absolutely PHENOMENAL job!!! Thank you for reviewing this one :3✨
Honestly the main problem for me is it should've been longer and had a bigger budget. I don't know why Amazon Prime didn't have faith in the movie, the book is already so popular.
@@killyourdarlings1305not to mention, kinda missed the mark with the royal "pressure" breathing down on Henry’s neck thing, when there wasn't any. Nobody seemed to care what he was doing during those trips. I just sat there thing and thinked: "he’s from a royal family, yet is treated like some uppity, black-sheep? Can’t worry if nobody seems to give a shit, HENRY🤷🏾♀️" Not saying it’s a bad movie, just felt one-sided with the stakes.
nah they could have done so much better the script is lazy and very VERY cheesy, all they should have done was follow the book, it wasn't that difficult
Honestly i wish they would’ve have made it a mini series so we could get all the details and the angst of their relationship. It’s actually really slow developed in the book and is one of the sweetest
It took me a second to realize you meant Alex Meyers and not Alex Claremont-Diaz and I tried to remember where he said that line in the movie or book 😂
they actually long-distance-email-flirt for a LONG time lol. wish we got a series where they just phased it so the people who haven't read the book don't feel like its rushed. btw i ABSOLUTELY loved every second of it. its so corny and cheesy but in the best way possible and chemistry is so good. going from kissing booth and purple hearts to this itself is insane.
I haven't read the book, and I didn't feel like anything was rushed. I thought it was a cute movie, and for once it's not a super toxic relationship like Twilight and all the crap that came after...
@@gabiluch87 I mean it does feel a little rushed, but I think that's because they didn't do a very good job at showing how time was progressing. I mean, the movie takes place over 14 months, but it doesn't feel that that much time has passed. Once you think about how much time it actually takes, it feels a lot more reasonable.
Got to know the movie was actually 3 hours long and they had to cut a lot of scenes down because of prime so I feel like this is why it feels more rushed and almost a little choppy. They filmed the cornetto scenes and everything, we just weren't able to get it :/
Fun fact: in the book Henry ALWAYS has lubrificant with him, it's inside his shaving kit. I read the book two days ago, it's not like I'm obsessed... I think
I need to read this book ASAP. Did you by any chance read The Charm Offensive? If yes I wanna know your opinion, if not, please let me recommend this little silly treasure to you
Yeah... he's very much a bottom so he's ALWAYS prepared to get 🐓ed down in the book. The author of the book has said on socials multiple times that Henry is a little bit of a slüt (affectionate).
me when i bought the book after my first watch of this movie and im now on the ninth watch… (i still need to get around to finishing the book but goddamn is this story good)
The movie really should've been a mini-series because there's a lot in the book about the boys and their relationship. Like the emails , that goes on for MONTHS in the books and they do bring up many historically gay figures as well as very important insecurities for both boys. There's also Henry's depression, his father's death, and his familial situation. There's Alex's internalized homophobia, his career and life aspirations, and what his relationship means for his mom's campaign. The flirting was also much more genuine and actually funny.
@@invisiblefirefairy03 Mostly stemming from his mother's campaign and what it would mean, Alex doesn't really want to admit that he's bisexual or that he does like Henry at first
The enemies to lovers part definitely developed quick. But I think it was fine. In the books it´s made a lot more apparent that both of them were attracted to each other from the beginning. Especially Henry. They just never genuinely interacted and it turned into this rivalry thing. I actually thought their text-flirting was done really well, loved how they portrayed that with them showing up around each other.
I thought the text-flirting was really well done too! The editing and the progression of them joking with each other to a late-night conversation on the bed was really cute.
As an enemies to lovers book reader, the anger and hate ALWAYS develops very quickly into sexual tension and passion. Some of these books really are out here giving us readers whiplash.
These two aren’t really enemies to lovers though. They dislike each other but never actually hate each other or at the very least there aren’t any real murder attempts
While I love the movie, it would've been better as a 8 episode series. Like the tension and hatred towards each other could've been explored with more backstory. The Vacation getaway sequence could've been a whole episode. The breaking ties bit could've been a whole episode before the finale. A lot of things could've been more explored more and paced better if this was a series than a 2 hour movie.
I thought the same thing!! A limited series could’ve fleshed out the storyline so much more and made it feel not so rushed. But the movie was still good for what it was
OH, ALEX. For gay men relationships, this is idyllic. It's usually dancing the devil's tango first while they're enemies and blocked on Grindr, then they become friends, then in 3 days either one of them ghosts the other, or if it's meant to be, they move in with each other. Oh, and talk is like, at the bare minimum. Source: me, a gay man
There are principles and standards personally I will not associate with apps or people who do not align with such. For instance if you’re going to Grindr by implication we know what that app is for then how can one expect a relationship to develop from there not to say it won’t but one of the parties got that app for a different reason other than finding a significant other. It takes a unique approach to find someone and some gay movies are not idealistic some of us we have a share of our fairytales, sure it took time to find him but it was worth the wait. Story short, you can only find him if his aligned with the right things and if his moral compass is better than the rest. So I have a different view of gay relationships. Hope one day you will share the same.
That's so wholesome. If you skip the lie filled preamble, you are more likely to find true love 💗 than someone who will just emotionally manipulate you into staying.
I know there were many side plots but I’m glad they chose to focus on the main romance. If they had kept everything like June. The romance wouldn’t have been developed
I think you're right but I really missed June I would have liked her even if she had a smaller role like Nora did I would have rather had June than Nora but thats just me.
i disagree, i think they should’ve made it a mini series to include the important plot points that made the evolution of the relationship so emotional and beautiful
I think the producer made the right choices in focusing on the main characters and themes from the book but you won't please everyone. It was really well done.
@@leroselapinexactly when book to movie adaptations get made there will ALWAYS be complaints about how it’s not close enough to the book or it missed some big details like it’s an ADAPTATION 😭it’s doesn’t have to be word for word people will never be satisfied tbh
Yep, that's the thing with all art/media, it's in it's nature not to please everyone. Even when a piece of art/media is popular, it doesn't mean that absolutely everyone likes it (and the opposite effect can sometimes happen with art/media that is unpopular/not well liked). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I've seen a couple of reviews from LGBT+ ppl and while there is no gatekeeping of this movie, a majority of them seemed to really like it! Some even got teary-eyed at certain moments. Everyone understands this is not supposed to be a serious movie and they're just happy to have a cheesy rom-com that they can watch when they're having a bad day. If anything, I think everyone in the cast has great chemistry and vibes (especially the two leads IMO), and I do enjoy seeing that 😊
On a more serious note, this movie is great representation for the lgbtq+ community. It doesn’t rely on stereotypes or hate. It’s just a love story that happens to be between two men, which is the point. Don’t make a gay love story, make a love story that just happens to be gay, if that makes sense
Yea. In a weird attempt at 'diversity' they just write LGBT characters where being gay is their literal personality and character trait. It gets tired, no one likes it and the perpetually offended crowd incorrectly interprets that as bigotry.
14:31 this is actually a HUGE part of the book. the emails henry & alex send each other are SO SO important because they talk about queer historical figures & how they are erased and henry's depression & grief. have read the book 4 times and it is seriously one of the most beautifully written romcoms ever. the book also goes over alex's anxiety (& probably undiagnosed adhd) & his need for perfection & work to just make sense of things. i think the movie works well as an independent movie but really poorly as an adaptation. but that's what happens when you want to adapt a mostly epistolary novel.
i completely agree with you on every point here their emails and the exploration of henry and alex's internal struggles with mental health and past familial trauma were some of my favourite parts of rwrb and erasing it from the movie made me so disappointed,,, i genuinely feel like it would've rounded out the story for viewers and give it so much more nuance
This is why I am so glad that I saw the movie first and got to experience it as a nice but forgettable story before being emotionally devastated by the book. Every bit of criticism from fans saying that they wish the movie could’ve explored this or that more is honestly way too fucking nice.
@@emmakane6848this is me. I’m glad I read the book years ago (literally my first BL read) so I have basically forgotten the details. It would have been tragic if I kept comparing the book from the movie bc I remember this book was so good that I delved deeper into queer books. Thankfully, that didn’t happen and I LOVED the movie despite everything they omitted (i.e. June).
@@emmakane6848I think it depends. I liked the book but the politics made it a bit boring to me, so since it was almost all erased in the movie, I loved it better!! but yeah, I wish they would have explored more on the emails.
@@jxderincant believe they erased that. it genuinely makes me so angry. i read the book in pdf then bought it physical to reread it and the part i was most excited for was the lovely emails. honestly wtf
The street fighter joke was fucking sending me. I love it. You should do more queer movies. You do an excellent job covering it and it doesn’t feel like you’re awkwardly tiptoeing around it either. You do as you say - review them like a straight movie - and you do it amazingly well.
I finished the video and I'm still hung up on "probably mostly straight" and what that's even means. But I respect you for being so chill about the gay stuff and I wish more people were like you. I've been around too many straight people that say shit like "I'm okay with gay people but I don't wanna see it" and I was pleasantly surprised when you just joked about it sounding like a fighting game. What a hilarious way of being accepting
Yeah, this will definitely be a video I rewatch and rewatch because every joke in this video hit hard, especially since this is his first gay movie video and the jokes were hilarious, straight(haha) out of the gate.
I don’t know if you saw the "For Kristy" at the end of the movie but Taylor Zakhar Perez’s sister Kristy passed away in June from cancer and she was so excited to see the movie, so it was their way of honouring her since she couldn’t be there when it premiered. She was apparently his biggest fan and was so excited to see him in a leading role.
It does kind of make me laugh that his is verbatim my comment on another video. But very sad detail, I wonder if Kristy was able to see an advanced version of the movie. She’d have been really proud of her brother.
Definitely a situation where you should watch the movie first and THEN read the book. Then you get to enjoy the movie for the cute love story it is without having to think about everything they left out, then reading the book is like getting bonus content - extra characters, new plot points, it’d be super fun! I honestly wish the book had been a little less clear in my mind when i saw the movie the first time because i think id have enjoyed it more for what it is instead of being distracted by what it’s not. Cause it’s REALLY CUTE!!!
So far mor than halfway through the book post watching the movie and I appreciate both for what they are and happy they cut things out in the movie because there are side characters but they do not really add much to the story. They just help the characters be a little more well rounded but I was able to kind of fill in the blanks before getting to the book.
@@Armiel so far the only thing that they left out that I am disappointed with is the way the putting was handled in the book was a little better otherwise I am happy with how it was all done.
All the bizarre plotlines just make it so much better imo 😭. It's so perfectly a rom com. They understood the genre completely. Also this video is hilarious, I found the pacing pretty good, it's pretty typical of romcom movies, idk maybe they might make a mini series based off this. I love this movie, every clip still makes me smile and laugh
I’ve been watching your channel for a bit, and I think you handle LGBTQ+ rep in movies and especially the jokes you make so well. As a queer person I was laughing so hard at this. You prove that people can make jokes about Gay people and not be offensive. You’re super funny and I love and really appreciate your content.
As an EMT, I can confirm that the whole, "I love you but life with you sucks" thing is a huge part of why like 90% of first-responder relationships end in break-up or divorce. They're literally some of the best people in the world, but their work schedule is in constant flux and impossible to plan around, and when they are off work they're constantly sleep deprived and can only actually be there with you mentally like 10% of the time. Couple that with burnout and the vast majority of relationships will fall apart.

14:26 okay but for real, in the book they go over this and I think it’s kind of sad that they don’t include it in the movie. They actually send a lot of emails back and forth talking about gay history and how they’re always written off as “good friends” and the author actually pulled quotes from these historical figures that really read as love letters rather than correspondence between friends. So this scene and his line is really sweet and poetic and is a full circle moment from their earlier conversations
Are you talking about that scene where Alex finds a note in his pocket reading "I wish there wasn't a wall between us" and so he flies all the way to England just to call Henry an obtuse f***ing aashole? Yeah me too
as a brit i just wanna say that the “creepy basement museum” is called the V&A and is one of londons biggest museum 😭😭 live ive been through that pathway so many times
I’m a huge fan of the book and after Purple Hearts I was very apprehensive about Nicholas galitzine playing Henry but I have to say he absolutely nailed it. He really was exactly how I imagined Henry in the book
The issue with purple hearts was never the acting, but the plot.. His character in purple hearts was a dick but Nick always delivers. If you haven't seen one of his earlier movies "high strung", it's what made me fall in love with his acting , and well, him.
@@darbat it's openly racist, doesn't really make sense (he owes a guy a shit ton of money, and when he doesn't give it to him, the guys goes to his gf's mom's house to scare them, but it turns out nick's character had the money because he gives it to him like the next day), and the woman in it just does a 180 as soon as she gets married to him. She goes army wife as soon as he leaves for war, without having ever cared about it beforehand. it's just a mess honestly. and the songs bored me to death too.
yk as a reader i was super disappointed with some of the changes they made but the movie as it’s own entity is just so freaking fun and cute, i had a blast watching it
same, there were quite a few missed opportunities, but it was still overall really enjoyable & watching it was a great time. also Zahra was absolutely perfect lol, that was probably the most book-accurate thing they had
100% I was sad June didn't exist, and somehow now Nora and Percy where a thing (Which I get it's a movie and we want the most important stuff.) Though the "tell me to leave scene was FLAWLESS. I also Loved Nick and Taylors chemistry they did a fantastic job
@PardonMyFrench16 I think they focused solely on Alex and Henry's story, and that's why they skipped the rest which at the end of the day is what's important. Tbh I didn't even remember June was missing and I think they did great with Nora's character. Also this movie feels like is going to have a sequel I don't know why but I hope so. Maybe an established couple now they'll have to deal with Alex in politics and that's how Luna enters the chat (😉) It has potential for a sequel if it does well
as somebody who has reread the book 5 times, I loved the movie! yes, there are some divergencies, but all in all the plot of the movie remains true to the storyline of the book, and, most importantly, Nick and Taylor have amazing chemistry
This movie has made me reread the book and of course their bond is much more meaningful there, but I'm very happy with the great chemistry between the leads and Nick's performance as Henry. I think those two things make up for most of the criticism I could give this movie.
After decades of gay movies where the only topics were HIV, death, shame etc. We finally have movies and series when we see happy people, teens in love, royals in love, real people who deserve to love and be loved. This movie creates perfect fantasy, safe place, big smile and what is the most important... HOPE. Hope for love, hope for better tomorrow. I absolutely love this movie, it's fantastic, romantic, funny and just beautiful.
Exactly! I'm so tired of people saying "tHis WAs NoT rEAliStIc" for this or any other recent queer movie/ series that doesn't end in tragedy. Then they get offended when you call out their bs, as if we don't know what they really believe.
as an openly gay man, I was in absolute tears, doubled over, screaming laughing when I heard the Street Fighter sounds joke! This whole review is Top Shelf!
Who'd have guessed that Marco from the Kissing Booth sequels and the Prince from Girl Boss Cinderella would play love interests in an actually decent, entertaining movie?
The contrast of Nicholas Galitzine going from being the lead in Purple Hearts which was.... definitely a movie. To doing this is just so huge. Like completely opposite target audiences, and this one is most definitely far better.

Apparently the original movie was 3 hours long but prime cut it down to 2. Ppl r now tryna convince prime to release the original 3 hour film cuz there was a bunch of stuff that was missed.
As a gay i can confirm, this is how gay guys relationships works. You go from enemies to lovers within one party, 5 grindr messeges or really boring elevator ride
My husband and I actually liked the film because it was romantic. Years ago, gay themed films always included some tragedy (Broke Back Mountain). This was light entertainment, the love scenes were believable, and the guys were easy on the eyes.
I loved the movie! I think the major issue was that they rushed everything but overall it was a pretty solid movie. People say that it's unrelastic and just corny, and though it sometimes is, the LGBTQ+ community just lacks of good movie/series that end in a optimistic and happy way, because usually everything always ends in disaster and tragedy, so it's nice to have once in a while movies like this, just a pretty happy movie that also shows the struggles that personally and socially envails being a queer person, but in a hopeful way. Loved the review!
You can be optimistic without being unrealistic. The ending when theres a bunch of people ouside the palace cheering waiting for Henry and Alex looks like a fairytale.
@@Thom35UO of course, but that's my point. Not every movie about a gay couple has to be completely attached to reality, that's why it's a movie/novel, it's not real. It gives the public something to watch relaxed and without having to worry about the real life problems, and there's plenty other media that shows the real side, so. What I mean to say it's that the community deserves to have media that they could watch just for fun and to even fantasize, it's not a bad thing as long as you can understand the difference between fiction and reality. 😄
The museum is the very famous V&A Museum (named after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert) and in the books it goes into details all the statues they look at and a lot of them were like a gay-awakening for Henry or are depicting gay lovers, etc. so that’s why it’s special to him. It’s a HUGE museum and completely free to visit (as most museums in London are).
Right? Congrats on breaking the code of the limits of a two hour movie. You just have to take the leap like we've done with straight couples forever. I buy this a lot more than a ton of straight romcoms I've watched tbh.
i loved this movie 😤 even if it’s objectively bad or lacks a lot of content from the book, the gays deserve more cheesy rom coms without any deep profound message! DISCLAIMER: i don’t think it’s objectively bad but some people did 😢
Yes! Queer people deserve to have lighthearted romcoms just as much as the rest of the world! I honestly feel it wasn’t bad, and built a very cute fantasy to indulge in ❤
With regards to the party scene, I always accept it to be because Henry doesn't know the lyrics so he doesn't know to get 'down', and Alex is too caught up in Henry to remember to go down.
I read the book a while back so my memory is not very fresh. Still, they rushed and omitted a couple things because the book has other subplots that it explores extensively throughout the story, especially regarding the elections. The elections and how to win over Texas are a big part of the story that puts a lot of pressure on Alex and helps the reader know more about Alex, his life, and his relationship. However, a lot of that pressure and moments were cut short in favor of increasing the focus on Alex and Henry's relationship because if they actually went deeper into this there wouldn't be enough time so its understandable. Thats why it should've been a series.
LOL the fact that you recognized Alex from the Kissing Booth but made no mention of Henry being the prince in the masterpiece (of trash) that was Cinderella or Purple Hearts was hilarious to me
Watched it last night and honestly thought it was so much fun. I’ve been meaning to read the book forever (still am) but I wanted to watch the movie anyway. It was about as predictable as a hallmark movie, but I thought the premise was a lot of fun, and it’s some really good representation for the lgbtq+ community that didn’t rely on stereotypes or making light of real issues
I'm loving seeing people who haven’t read the book react to this movie cause, as far as noticed, the movie did its job of telling this story to a new audience. I enjoyed the changes. I thought the film captured the relationship between Alex and Henry very well. Totally enjoyed it!
Help me out. In the book, was the Prince of England just standing off to the side at a party like he was balls deep in his emo phase? Because I was 💯 lost by that point. I hear them saying "It's so hard to be famous" and then I see them wandering around outside like a couple no name college bros. No secret service. No MI6 or whatever. Is that how it is in the book, or was the difficulties of notoriety cut from the movie?
Perhaps if I read the book, I would feel the same way, but as someone who just wanted to enjoy a fun gay romcom, I was taken out of the movie by how fast the relationship was developing. I really wanted to take my time enjoying each season of their relationship and also wished for a better explanation for why they hated each other initially.
@@bruceweatherly6559 the thing about it, is that the hate is kinda one sided, even in the book, and it is really just because Henry was rude the first time they met, and maybe a little bit of the comparison thing between them, which is what they focused on more in the movie. The point is that they never really had a real reason to hate each other, and that Alex was kinda sorta repressing his attraction to Henry by hating him (bc also in the book, Alex doesn't really know that he's bi, so it´s a whole other self discover journey thing), and Henry was just reflecting Alex's behavior. I guess it was a bit too much to include in just one movie? It didn't really bother me bc i read the book, and in my head it was just natural that they hated each other 😭
14:30 as a lesbian, this sent me. I love this. I've never seen you cover anything queer, and is video is all I could've hoped for as a gay woman. Please cover more queer shows in the future!
Kind of like how historians for the longest time tried to explain away Alexander the Great's long time lover Hephaestion or Achilles' relationship with Patrocles. But even without knowing explicitly the relationship those men had you could still read between the lines because for some reason while they erased the context of the relationship they still kept all the emotionally intimate moments and the strong grief these men experienced once their lovers died. I mean in all the translations of the Iliad Achilles still requests that when he dies his ashes should be placed in the same urn as Patrocles' ashes, which was something that Greeks only did if the person they lost was like their soulmate basically. It wasn't common and it held much significance when a request like that was made, but old timey historians and the movie Troy expect me to believe this was just familial love? 🤷🏼♀️
i love that half his critiques are different in the books. I know it was a 2 hour film but they skipped soooo many essential scenes that made enemies to lovers feel earned. Adore the book, enjoyed the film.
The pace is so much slower in the book, which makes it more realistic. They definitely rushed the story in the movie and also left out a TON of stuff that was pretty important (imo) in the book That being said-the cast was very good and Nicholas and Taylor had great chemistry
Yeah, that's kinda just one of the issues with adaptations of stories that are too long to properly fit into one movie, but too short to fit into two or a series
this has probably got to be one of the funniest videos of yours I've ever seen, the "going in dry" and streetfighter jokes had my ribs hurting I was laughing so hard edit: I SAW THAT BEFORE THE "I ran this before 10 queer guys" PART LMAOOO THATS GOLD
It may be a cheesy rom com with pacing issues, but I thought the chemistry between Henry and Alex made up for most of it, making the watching experience very enjoyable. I actually thought they were pretty charming with each other. Although I admit, having read the book, it's possible I'm projecting some of my feelings about the original characters here and it's not the same for people who have only watched the movie.
If it helps, I haven’t read the book and I think they had great chemistry and I loved it! I just started listening to the audiobook because I enjoyed the movie so much
@@luckbear87 My sister hasn't read the book either and she told me she loved the movie. I'm so glad you're giving the book a chance!! It's one of my favorite romances.

I died at that part, but then it made me think of when I shared an apartment with my best friend and his boyfriend….definitely sounded higher pitched than street fighter 🙉🙈😅
as a queer person, this video had me cackling!!! and I appreciate you giving the movie credit where it's dueeee like yes the romance is rushed (on-screen at least cuz it takes them months to even have their first kiss in their real life), but for most romcoms that start out enemies to lovers I feel like that is the case bc you're 180-ing the emotions of the characters
One thing I find so funny is when characters basically shout out their "secret plans" loud enough that people around them should hear. How he said quite loudly that he was going to take him into his room and do bad things to him. I was like, maybe you shoulda whispered that? Lol
15:53 the wattpad ending is so true but it is also one of the scenes that made me cry hard in the book because it's so vividly described there. they show the various reactions and it actually takes a pretty dark turn 'cause the emails were leaked by the competition which actually becomes a major point for them winning texas. god, i wanna shove this book at everyone's face istg lmao.
Please do shove the book into everyone’s faces 😂 I read it years ago but I remember it being SO GOOD and heavy in the right places but also hella hot for so many ahjsdhbjas
So I first watched the movie before reading the book and I have to agree that everything in the movie was a bit rushed and some important characters were missing (e.g. June). I also think some important scenes came a bit too short like this whole email thing between Alex and Henry etc. Nevertheless, I think they did a very good job, considering the fact that they put a over 400 pages book into a 2h movie. Taylor and Nick were in my opinion perfect for the roles as Alex and Henry and even tough everything happened quite quickly, it was easy to follow and all the important scenes from the book were covered. All in all, for me personally, I can say that I absolutely loved the movie (I even had to watch it multiple times) but I still think a mini series would have probably been better since the book is so extensive
This is why TH-cam reviews and commentaries etc. are so important, like from a marketing standpoint. If this video didn't exist, I never would have even heard of this film despite it being the kind of film I tend to like (I watch a lot of rom-coms). I saw the start of the video and decided I had to stop and go find this film. After I watched it I came back to finish the video. I think movie studios owe a lot more then they realize to people like you. Great video btw, I haven't laughed that hard in a long time.
Yeah I had seen it pop up on Prime but it didn’t catch my interest at all, HOWEVER I opened Alex’s video and saw the comments saying it was good so I paused, went to watch the movie, liked it, and came back to finish the video. Probably gonna track down the book too.
@@petloverspythe book is EASILY 10 times better than the movie. Would recommend reading it asap. It's a shame they had to write out Alex's sister for the movie and made Bea a one-dimensional character instead of the most badass of the royal so siblings.
@@petloverspyOh if you enjoyed the movie I can tell you 100% you are going to LOVE the book. It's sad because even the movie was originally scripted to be 3 hours long, but then didn't even reach 2 hours. This is the real reason their relationship seems rushed, in the book there's also a very interesting character with a plot that doesn't show up in the movie at all, but constantly helps Alex :(
@@hey7492 I am glad I watched the movie first though because I didn’t experience that vibe of it feeling rushed! Got to just sit back and enjoy the movie, and now I can go enjoy the book - double the fun!
honestly the movie is way more lighthearted and touches less on stuff like trauma, addiction(still mad they didnt include that part of bea’s story 😕) and the book fleshes out both their characters and backstories way more, but for a two hour movie adaptation of a book with a lot of stuff happening for the word count they did pretty okay
I watched it yesterday and I find that it was pretty good for a simple romantic comedy movie, it was really fun and the geopolitical stakes of their relationship grants a lot of tension to the story ( which is an interesting perspective when you think about it ) but sometimes I feel like it would have been better if it was a series format because some events happen a bit too fast and sometimes some characters supposed to be important for the story are here during the first half of the film and just straight up vanished from the rest of the story. Apparently the book is better and take more time to explore their relationship so I will check it. I also really like as a bi person the that fact you reviewed it just as a love story of two people loving each other and not necessarily as a "queer love story", and l’m not gonna lie your humor is also pretty great the devil tango and street fighter part made me die of laugher
I do think the book is better paced in terms of their relationship, especially because everything is through Alex's perspective and he hadn't even figured out he was bi until Henry kissed him and made him reevaluate everything he thought he knew about himself, so we definately get some time to process everything. And since we're in his brain, we understand why he is antagonistic towards Henry better (they tried to explain it in that first scene with Nora). But overall, it's still a pretty good adaptation of the story!
I didn’t realize how much happened in the book until I saw the movie. It cut out several main characters (ex Alex’s sister) and side plots and still pacing was so fast af
He didn't swim away because he didnt love him the same he swam away because alex was talking about basically coming about about their relationship after his mom's re election. In that case the scandal wouldnt affect alexs life that much but it would still affect Henry's life because he'd still be a prince .
Honestly, I don’t care how cheesy movie might be. But as a bisexual male, I’ve been waiting to watch this movie and I absolutely loved it. Alex dislikes Henry because he was a dick to him when they first met and also because he’s tired of being constantly compared to Henry and having to try harder than him.

The book takes a longer time developing the relationship and making it richer, but for a two hour movie adaptation, I think they did an absolutely PHENOMENAL job!!! Thank you for reviewing this one :3✨

That sounds really stupid
That's so wholesome.
If you skip the lie filled preamble, you are more likely to find true love 💗 than someone who will just emotionally manipulate you into staying.

The right way to do these kind of things
Yea. In a weird attempt at 'diversity' they just write LGBT characters where being gay is their literal personality and character trait. It gets tired, no one likes it and the perpetually offended crowd incorrectly interprets that as bigotry.

The issue with purple hearts was never the acting, but the plot.. His character in purple hearts was a dick but Nick always delivers. If you haven't seen one of his earlier movies "high strung", it's what made me fall in love with his acting , and well, him.
I keep seeing people clown on Purple Hearts. Rather than watch it, how exactly is it bad?
Well his first break out role was playing gay guy in the movie Handsome devil
I was really sad about June and Luna being cut, but yk what I think they did a good job with what they had time for
@PardonMyFrench16 I think they focused solely on Alex and Henry's story, and that's why they skipped the rest which at the end of the day is what's important. Tbh I didn't even remember June was missing and I think they did great with Nora's character. Also this movie feels like is going to have a sequel I don't know why but I hope so. Maybe an established couple now they'll have to deal with Alex in politics and that's how Luna enters the chat (😉) It has potential for a sequel if it does well
Like Alex storming the castle would've been such a good movie scene 😫😫😫😫
The Street Fighter thing absolutely killed me, flawless comic timing there.😂😂
as somebody who has reread the book 5 times, I loved the movie! yes, there are some divergencies, but all in all the plot of the movie remains true to the storyline of the book, and, most importantly, Nick and Taylor have amazing chemistry
This movie has made me reread the book and of course their bond is much more meaningful there, but I'm very happy with the great chemistry between the leads and Nick's performance as Henry. I think those two things make up for most of the criticism I could give this movie.
I REREAD THE BOOK 5 TIMES TOO! I WANTED TO SEE JUNE SO BADLY!!
@@justN-kx9hk This!!!!!!!!! I was really looking forward to her too
After decades of gay movies where the only topics were HIV, death, shame etc. We finally have movies and series when we see happy people, teens in love, royals in love, real people who deserve to love and be loved. This movie become my number one the second I finished it. From now on it will be rewatch on every valentine's day, every christmas day, with friends with big bowl of popcorn and pizza. This movie creates perfect fantasy, safe place, big smile and what is the most important... HOPE. Hope for love, hope for better tomorrow. I absolutely love this movie, it's fantastic, romantic, funny and just beautiful.
Thank you
Yess I hope to rewatch this movie with friends soon and just get giddy together 😊
Yes the gay movies back then always feature heavy themes. I really like this sugar boom among all the melancholies, losses and harsh realities.
Exactly! I'm so tired of people saying "tHis WAs NoT rEAliStIc" for this or any other recent queer movie/ series that doesn't end in tragedy. Then they get offended when you call out their bs, as if we don't know what they really believe.
I feel the exact same way. If you can find it, my #1 is still the low budget 2007 film "Shelter".
as an openly gay man, I was in absolute tears, doubled over, screaming laughing when I heard the Street Fighter sounds joke! This whole review is Top Shelf!
Who'd have guessed that Marco from the Kissing Booth sequels and the Prince from Girl Boss Cinderella would play love interests in an actually decent, entertaining movie?
trina, how are you literally everywhere
The contrast of Nicholas Galitzine going from being the lead in Purple Hearts which was.... definitely a movie. To doing this is just so huge. Like completely opposite target audiences, and this one is most definitely far better.
they're both phenomenal actors :) can't wait for their new projects!!
@@Beny763oh my god I forgot about that dumpster fire of a movie 😰
Hopefully he gets casted for greater movies in the future after this wonderful film~
@@chilichinashop If someone hasn´t seen some of his other movies, I highly recommend checking out "Handsome Devil". His acting debut "The Beat beneath my Feet" was also pretty decent.
I did not expect to love it as much as I do. Like, yes, it's corny and idealised and your typical romcom, but it's also very funny, got good characters, great chemistry and boy did I not expect that polo scene to get that heated that fast, the cutting of the scene is just perfection. Also the combination of British cockiness and American charm is just chefs kiss. This movie was basically made for me, ticks all my boxes
Gays deserve their Christmas Princes too.

Hell that “I’m never gonna do karao-“ scene then immediately panning to him singing his heart out was absolute PERFECTION. RomComs are BACK baby 😂
As someone who read the book, i actually really enjoyed the movie. I was upset they cut out some characters but it's one of the best movie adaptations I've seen
Watching this movie I was blown away by their chemistry and the acting from both of them like RENT WAS DUE! Especially Henry's actor, he convey so much emotions with his eyes omg.
He lowkey scared me in Cinderella 😥
But this role and its directing suited his ability way more 🎉
I'm happy for the actor. The only things I had seen him in was Amazon's Cinderella and Purple Hearts, neither films did him any justice

IDK why but the really boring elevator ride part is cracking me up!
❌🏳️🌈❌🏳️🌈❌🏳️🌈❌
My husband and I actually liked the film because it was romantic. Years ago, gay themed films always included some tragedy (Broke Back Mountain). This was light entertainment, the love scenes were believable, and the guys were easy on the eyes.
Absolutely ! There are a really a few positive classic gay movies. My fav' is Jean Marc Vallée's C.R.A.Z.Y., and you?
The hospital bill at 6:02 took me out. How could I not love Alex Meyers??
I loved the movie! I think the major issue was that they rushed everything but overall it was a pretty solid movie. People say that it's unrelastic and just corny, and though it sometimes is, the LGBTQ+ community just lacks of good movie/series that end in a optimistic and happy way, because usually everything always ends in disaster and tragedy, so it's nice to have once in a while movies like this, just a pretty happy movie that also shows the struggles that personally and socially envails being a queer person, but in a hopeful way. Loved the review!
The movie was super long though 🤷🏾♂️ they were packing a novel into a film
You can be optimistic without being unrealistic. The ending when theres a bunch of people ouside the palace cheering waiting for Henry and Alex looks like a fairytale.
@@Thom35UOits not like we have many queer fairytales so eh
That "rain makes everything more dramatic" jingle was so perfect 😮
"When they finally do become a couple, it doesn't really feel, like, earned"
Congrats, you've just described every straight romcom couple ever 😂
fucking true actually
True 😂
Why I stopped watching ‘em in the first place 😂
Yeah, he’s done that plenty of times
DISCLAIMER: i don’t think it’s objectively bad but some people did 😢
As someone who had to sit through 100s of hallmark movies and Cinderella type romcoms this was such a cute breath of fresh air
it's definitely not objectively bad lol
it's not objectively bad and matthew the director of the movie has said that this movie is his movie and casey's book is casey's book.
Yes! Queer people deserve to have lighthearted romcoms just as much as the rest of the world! I honestly feel it wasn’t bad, and built a very cute fantasy to indulge in ❤
lol apologies for saying it’s objectively bad, twitter was writing a bunch of think pieces on why they think it’s trash 😔 it infected my brain
With regards to the party scene, I always accept it to be because Henry doesn't know the lyrics so he doesn't know to get 'down', and Alex is too caught up in Henry to remember to go down.
I feel like Alex has been way more unhinged lately and i love it😭
I read the book a while back so my memory is not very fresh.
Definitely! I’ve only ever heard of the book before and absolutely LOVED the movie, its now been moved to first priority on my TBR and I can’t wait!
It didn't really bother me bc i read the book, and in my head it was just natural that they hated each other 😭
“It’s time to think some happy throught Henry, Im going in dry” 😂😂😂 I nearly fell out my chair laughing 😂
14:30 as a lesbian, this sent me. I love this. I've never seen you cover anything queer, and is video is all I could've hoped for as a gay woman. Please cover more queer shows in the future!

He covered xo kitty and do revenge which both focus on wlw characters!
Oh My God yes😂
alex trying to make sense of two men doing the devils tango is genuienly the funniest part of this review
i love that half his critiques are different in the books. I know it was a 2 hour film but they skipped soooo many essential scenes that made enemies to lovers feel earned. Adore the book, enjoyed the film.
I wish this was a tv show bc they could’ve included so much more substance to develop things that the book had 😭
The pace is so much slower in the book, which makes it more realistic. They definitely rushed the story in the movie and also left out a TON of stuff that was pretty important (imo) in the book
That being said-the cast was very good and Nicholas and Taylor had great chemistry
My opinion too
Yeah, that's kinda just one of the issues with adaptations of stories that are too long to properly fit into one movie, but too short to fit into two or a series
It should have been a series, we could have got more character developement.
IT WAS TWO HOUR MOVIE FFS STOP WHINING
I havent read the book, what are some of the important stuff they left out?
this has probably got to be one of the funniest videos of yours I've ever seen, the "going in dry" and streetfighter jokes had my ribs hurting I was laughing so hard

I just started listening to the audiobook because I enjoyed the movie so much

as a queer person, this video had me cackling!!! and I appreciate you giving the movie credit where it's dueeee like yes the romance is rushed (on-screen at least cuz it takes them months to even have their first kiss in their real life), but for most romcoms that start out enemies to lovers I feel like that is the case bc you're 180-ing the emotions of the characters
I love how Alex just straight up says, "I have no idea what you're talking about" Like that got me ROLLING on the ground
One thing I find so funny is when characters basically shout out their "secret plans" loud enough that people around them should hear. How he said quite loudly that he was going to take him into his room and do bad things to him. I was like, maybe you shoulda whispered that? Lol

I started to read it because I cannot watch the movie (I do not have an account) and the trailer really made me curious 😊
The movie adaptation was good, but the book was a masterpiece
The „I‘m going in dry“-comment had me hollering 😂😂😂
I loved the book, the film was great, and your review perfectly amusing as always. Thank you!
@@petloverspy Same. Given that the movie just came out, decent chance the local library ordered extra copies.
@@petloverspythe book is EASILY 10 times better than the movie. Would recommend reading it asap. It's a shame they had to write out Alex's sister for the movie and made Bea a one-dimensional character instead of the most badass of the royal so siblings.

❌🏳️🌈❌🏳️🌈❌🏳️🌈❌🏳️🌈❌
honestly the movie is way more lighthearted and touches less on stuff like trauma, addiction(still mad they didnt include that part of bea’s story 😕) and the book fleshes out both their characters and backstories way more, but for a two hour movie adaptation of a book with a lot of stuff happening for the word count they did pretty okay
As a gay dude I approve all of the queer jokes you had me on the floor with the street fighter part the "japan!" at the end killed me lol
That bit cracked me uppp 😭

I didn’t realize how much happened in the book until I saw the movie. It cut out several main characters (ex Alex’s sister) and side plots and still pacing was so fast af
He didn't swim away because he didnt love him the same he swam away because alex was talking about basically coming about about their relationship after his mom's re election. In that case the scandal wouldnt affect alexs life that much but it would still affect Henry's life because he'd still be a prince .
Honestly, I don’t care how cheesy movie might be. But as a bisexual male, I’ve been waiting to watch this movie and I absolutely loved it.
