As an editor, getting paid in exposure would be a kick in the teeth. I don't see how being a musician would feel any different. I can see why you don't feel like it's a big deal since the music you use comes from family, and you already had it on hand. I think it's great that you're using your success to promote those close to you. If you'd gone to someone and asked them to make music for your channel, telling them the exposure is good enough reason, that would be insulting.

personally i have made some music and i would be fine with people using it in videos if they linked to the song or credited me, heck if they asked i wouldn't mind them not linking it in every video if they linked it in a few
its all about who is making the video and who is making the music
i would personally never edit a video for exposure but i would edit a video for free for a close friend(and i have done that before)

Giving credit to music should be mandatory no matter what form or duration it’s played in.
You never know what that song might mean to someone, and how hard it is to figure out the name.
Take for example tierzoos videos. He uses a theme from a TV series that is very nostalgic to me in nearly every video, but it took a long time for me to figure out what the name of the song was.

as expected a great video but its sad that the most arent understanding or seeing it from another perspective (it shouldnt taken as a personal attack but i want to share my opinion/thoughts).
that what he meant is that even if you dislike a song or melody heard in a game/video the first time. you might like it after hearing it again. like with the minecraft music i associate it with good memories when ive played online and made some good buildings but also with sad and bad moments like when you find some diamonds but you die in a lava lake below it or a creeper/skeleton pushes you in the lava due of knockback. ofc there are also songs wich i associate with good, bad and funny moments but we are all different so you might not share the same opinion as i do or those of kliksphilip and thats okay. because if everybody would have the same opinion we would run in circles and wouldnt be that different from each other. and ofc science wouldnt gone that far as it it today without discusions and seeing stuff from different perspectives.
and i apologize for my bad grammar but english isnt my native language.

I was thinking a lot about this recently. Lying down and listening to specific songs brought back vivid feelings I'd not experienced in a long time, and that were tied to certain places and times in my life. I've grown to love these collection of songs, but reflecting afterwards, they're really not that special. Without the feelings attached to them, I likely wouldn't give them a second listen. Your music has the same effect, it's comforting, and even though this sounds silly, it feels like my personal music. It has a meaning attached to it that nobody else will be able to experience or comprehend because of the effect your videos and your music has had on me during the past few years. Thank you Phillip

I love your music Philip. I first heard it in your going low series and downloaded it to my new smartphone. I listen it on shuffle all the time while I studied and worked and walked home from school(I just started first year of highschool). But listening it constantly for 6months it lost the "special felling" I got when I heard it first. It became just another song for me. So I stopped listening to it and kinda forgot about it and now I only listen to it when I use it when making my cs go map. This helps the song to maintain that special felling when you just have to move your leg or do something and it gives you motivation.

This is how I often get into new bands/new albums of a band since I'm usually too lazy to just outright listen to albums as its own activity. @@kliksphilip it depends who's "they" are and who's in the position of power in the deal. In other words, who's getting the pay cheque and who's working for free in this situation. There is a very big difference between collaboration between two equal level artists and someone earning an income asking an artist for freebies for nothing more than exposure.
I appreciate you see your video production as a form of artwork - I wouldn't argue against that. I also appreciate that a lot of time and effort goes into making any video. But I think you'll also appreciate a lot of time and effort goes into producing a piece of music.
In a hypothetical world if I had an audience of millions/billions, say I was a big company, and I asked you to work for two weeks or months producing a video with the promise of more exposure than you could dream of, which I also said would lead to a better wage/living/way of life. Then after all your hard work I forget to credit you, nothing comes your way and you have just done all that work for free, you'd not only be angry, you'd have wasted your own time and money for nothing.
I hope you'll also appreciate that everyone has bills to pay and if you love something you should aim to pay for it to ensure it keeps being produced. That goes for anything with a material value that someone produces. If you don't pay for it, you're making it more likely it won't be produced again, even if the piece of music/art already exists before you ask to use it.
Your video suggests that musicians and music producers should be happy to work for free to get exposure. Which is wrong. You may have not intended this to be the case. But this is certainly the message it sends. You may be using friends or families work. You may pay them back in kind or they don't want/need a income from the hard work they have done. But there are loads of talented people out there who are taken advantage of because of this simple message that exposure is enough payment. It sets a precedence for creative industries to ask for things for free that they could easily pay for. Or pay a lot less than they would for something because someone has been convinced that giving it away for free is the only way to make it in that industry. It's the reason the government had to step in, in the UK, to introduce laws governing working for free in an internship. It's why Arts Jobs no longer allows unpaid internships to be listed on their jobs emails.
I am some years older than you. I saw a lot of friends of mine work for no money for very wealthy people and get next to nothing for it in return. They'd spend thousands of pounds traveling to work and back, work long hours and at the end of it get nothing more than a "thanks". Some of them had parents who could fund them, but most didn't. There has been a very difficult fight against this attitude of not giving payment for hard work and you should really consider that when saying exposure is enough payment. It might well be enough payment for those who have wealth, an inheritance or a support network to live off. But do we only want rich people making art? Not really, no.
There is always a way to pay someone in cash for their work, to support them financially so they can keep producing work - after all they are contributing to your product you should pay for them like you'd pay for the camera or software you use. Even if you currently have no money, there are plenty of ways to pay for something in cash. You could agree to give them some of the income from the TH-cam ad revenue. You could pay them in small installments over a long time or say when you are earning over a certain amount you'll pay them a set amount for this piece of music - like a loan. If you both feel it's fair you could treat it as a collaboration and both give each other equal time. It really depends on the power dynamic. But if you are wealthy and they are poor, pay them. Show them you are willing to give something up to ensure they will keep producing what they make. If for no other reason than you like it and want them to succeed. Otherwise all we'll have in the future is born rich artists and dead artists.

i love the music in these videos, it suits the style of all of the homemade maps and testing you do in csgo and all of the clickfusion games i associate the channel with so closely, as its all homemade as well

Now that im getting more into music making i realise the feeling, association, meaning is very very important more so than the actual subjective quality and style

Videos where you talk about life, notsalgic things or videogames....man just love em....And yeah partly because of the music. Gives me a nostalgic feeling^^

I have this the most on old Yogscast videos. If I rewatch their old playlists and the outro comes on I'm taken back to when I first saw them.
Video games too; the Halo soundtrack takes me back to houses I used to live in.

Ahoys subtle sin wave that is very present at the beginnigs of his videos and get´s louder and more prominent towards the end is just as well of an example of this idea.

I really really like "your" music, the moment i heard it i immeadeatly grew found of it, it just... gives me a sence of nostalgia and memories, unlike anyother music i have heard. And yeah sure there are allways those timely classics like, i need a hero from shrek 2, halo 2, tf2, payday2, hl2, portal 2 (idk u can sence a theme here) soundtracks, but your music just feels unique and memorable, with or without the explanation in your video.

the song 'faded' would be a great example of exposure doing its thing. A few years ago it was used in absolutely every tutorial video on youtube, and that kickstarted alan walkers career as an artist

I realised how much I associated music with videos when I was playing half life 2 for the first time, I just finished Ravenholm and got to the shoot out in the wharehouse, triage at dawn started playing and I instantly recognised it from phillips videos, I stopped and listened. I'd never realised it was not one of Phillips but to me it always will be.
