Crazy, about a year and a half ago now I visited Iceland, only to come home and find a vlog from you just having done the same. I think I even commented at the time about how we'd been to similar things just a few days apart. Then at the start of this year I got an orange rescue centre cat and then discovered you had done the same. And now I just recently got back from a 10 trip across Japan and you've gone and done the same again! Looks like we both went similar paths once again, 7:30 I think I literally stood at the same point as you in that shop in front of that exact Rog Ally.
Just very coincidental, I kept an eye out for myself in background of your clips just in case. If it happens one more time though I will have to start suspecting you're listening in on my phonelines.

There are plenty of dishes without fish in Japan, like tonkatsu, gyudon, oyakodon and yakitori. I barely ate any fish when I went to Tokyo a few weeks ago.
I also surprised that he said there was no sandwich when there are dozens of videos just people trying out all the sandwiches at 7-11.

Yea I was so suprised and disappointed that he went to McDonalds to avoid fish, in japan which has such good cusuine..... I mean ofcourse there are a lot of dishes with fish, but it really isn't hard to find a lot of dishes without fish. Also how the hell didn't he find any sandwhiches, a standard konbini would have done the job and on top of that there are other snacks that do replace sandwiches pretty good in my opinion like Onigiri (well I guess he would like it because of the fish inside anyways) or Bento boxes if he wanted something for the train ride.
To add to your list of fishless meals in Japan:
Yakiniku (literally grillead MEAT)
karee raisu, literally curry rice usually with tonkatsu, very tasty too
lots and lots of ramen dishes without fish, it's kind of pointles naming them all out
soba, which are buckwheat noodles that are often eaten cold with a dip, no fish usually (unless it's in a soup with some fish)
Many udon soups with and without fish
wagyu beef (and it hasn't got to be A5 Kobe there are really good ones for a quarter the price which are so tasty)
Shabu-Shabu also doesn't have fish (at least Ive never seen it)
Okonomiyaki (this depends on the exact type, but can also be without fish)
Omuraisu (omelette rice)
Yakisoba (Fried Noodles with vegetables)
Sukiyaki (thin slices of beef, cooked with various vegetables in a table-top cast-iron pan)
Ushitan (beef tongue)
yakimeshi (fried rice)
I could go on and on...
Yep plenty of meat dishes, vegetarians are gonna struggle in general all over east Asia but there is plenty of meat, noodles and rice dishes that don’t include fish.

You WERE pointing at a temple at the start. The main building of Asakusa is a temple not a shrine. The grounds in general are a Buddhist temple (there is a tiny shrine to the right of the main temple). But you were called out unfairly in the intro, you were correct

Japan I can honestly say is one of those countries I think I will forever keep coming back too. Me and my partner went for around 2 weeks back in 2019, we went to Osaka, Kyoto, Nara then back to Osaka again.
Haven't been since but we always look fondly and always get excited at the idea of returning back. Thank you for this video Philip, it was a unexpected but welcomed surprise that got the nostalgia levels firing up again.
Also I think you missed out! Their egg sandwiches are notoriously some of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten. And haven't had anything close since. Also they do a good cream and strawberry one. I would of recommended finding them in 7eleven & Lawsons if you were still there. They always had them whenever we were craving them.

Food was definitely a challenge when I went there for a few days since I am not a fan of sushi or fish. Luckily, once you know what to look for, you can find hole in the wall kitchens (I guess the japanese equivalent of a diner) that serve just curry, noodles, or katsu.. which are often made with chicken, pork, or beef.

So many people misunderstand this word which is a shame since there are doujin music and cute doujin mangas (which are not lewd at all). I'm wondering did you have a set schedule of places you wanted to visit, or did you do a bit of wondering around seeing the less traveled bits of the areas you were in?
For me, the latter is more of an exciting way to visit a new place. So I'm curious on how you went about it
It was heavily, heavily planned and organised and there was very little spare time just to explore. My girlfriend collects everything she wants to see in a country, then draws a critical path to tick off as many places as possible. I don't think it's an enjoyable way to do things but it's the only way we could fit so much in to so few days.
I've never traveled abroad, but even in domestic trips my girlfriend and I do this. If there's any time left after the critical path that's when we usually do the exploring part. There's beauty to both ways of travel planning
Sometimes it's worse to go all rogue mode and explore the new place because you can easily lose many cool places by losing track of time or space or maybe not knowing that an unsuspect building is the nicest museum you've could ever visit.

this is the first time I hear someone going to japan and not liking the food. good video sounds like apart from that you had a good time. family mart chicken is famous, convenient stores like 7-eleven and the mentioned family mart might be a good option for you in the future
people have different taste, and food are the most diverse one tbh.

Japan has all kinds of meats too.. and he says theres no sandwiches, except theres many, and all the 7elevens have food you can literally heat up in a microwave at the 7elevens that taste almost like restuarant quality unlike most microwave dinners in the west.

It sounds like you just genuinely didn't know where to find food, which is understandable. Japan definitely has a lot to offer even if you don't like fish or meat but you didn't know where to go to get it. I don't understand the lack of sandwiches comment though. If you were visiting コンビニ's (convenience stores) like Lawson or Family Mart, half of what they stock are just sandwiches. Honestly their egg salad sandwiches are better than anything you can get in shops in the UK or even make yourself sometimes. I'm sad you weren't able to experience them.

Seeing your clips from places I just recently visited is giving a kind of "mini nostalgia", the hakone round course was one of the highlights of mine I can see you visited, and I see you also encountered a boy band outside Meiji Jingu.
I visited during cherry blossom season this year and in the end it was really rain even at that time of year, so I think one can really never make any weather expectations.

Fun timing to see you having visited Japan, I was there for two weeks in May and had a good time.
It's cool to see how you seemed to follow a similar sort of goal as us, as you appear to have visited many places across the country (at the very least from Tokyo down to Hiroshima).
We bought some JR Pass thing that allowed unlimited rides on many trains which turned out to be a pretty great investment. I never would have guessed that it would have been possible to travel to such a wide range of places so quickly and so cheaply.
I found it interesting that you were disappointed in the chicken offerings. I personally was very fond of the Karaage (fried chicken) that were offered at many places. The convenience store Lawson had some especially fantastic Karaage to-go (Karaage-kun), and I really miss being able to just walk into a store and grab such a wonderful small meal. Maybe Sweden is just not very good at this stuff.
I also really enjoyed a good amount of the Ramen places we went to, where large slices of pork would usually be included (and no fish D:).
TeamLab was on our list of itineraries, but we ended up prioritizing other things, and I feel a bit bummed out about that now. It looked like a really cool place.

@@shinren_ I'm a pretty big Japan nerd, so I was familiar with many of the dishes that I wanted to try before making the trip.
Almost everything that we ate I had at least heard of before, so I had a decent grasp on what stuff was. c:
We visited there in May too, Team Labs was probably the coolest and most memorable experience for the whole trip. The LED room is also my favorite. My friend told me that it is a limited time thing too (closing at the end of the year I think), which made me more grateful that we managed to visit it during our trip.
There are some permanent ones around the world too, so don't feel too bummed out, you still have the chance to visit one
This video has described 80% of my most recent trip to japan, I guess this is what it feels like to be a tourist. Dreamlabs was one of the first things I did and equipped with skinny jeans I ruined the rest of my night... but the bouncy glowing balls were lots of fun, the arcades there truly are a lot to take in but I managed to fine some really ancient machines and have a hell of a lot of fun with them. I too went when the weather was miserable as hell and me being stubborn I only brought short sleeved shirts which lead to many natives asking where I was from because I looked insane, one day I was able to see the tip of Fugi but it would've been great if the view around the skytree wasn't so foggy.
But nothing in the world can beat my favorite night there. It was cold and we were walking around to find a place to grab some food, we walked through a few open malls when I discovered something very questionable, it was a claw machine with several pictures of Arnold Schwarzenegger and many peculiar items to grab if you really want to know someone posted about it on reddit, anyways I walked past without giving it another thought but when we came back from eating I saw a man staring at my group and before I could give it any thought he unbuttoned his jacket and showed one of the items that he'd tucked into his pants (yes I'm sure it was from the machine) that night I laughed the hardest I have in my entire life.

Great video! We just got back from a trip to Japan a couple weeks ago and it was great to see a lot of the same locations in your video! I spent a good amount of time at the Taito Station arcade playing the rhythm games ( 5:09 ) so it was cool to see that you visited the same floor!

For food in Japan I was surprised to hear that you found "non fish" stuff to be so bland. I've never heard of fried chicken or katsu being described in such ways.
I know plenty of people that don't like fish that not only find the fish in Japan to be good, but plenty of them actually finding lots of good food options that aren't fish, but from my experience what the likely problem you were having is potentially staying cheap. Fish in Japan is remarkably cheap, while beef, pork and chicken require more land use and end up being either far more expensive or (what you might have experienced) has it shipped in frozen from other countries.

For next time, it's ok to eat in Japan outside, it's just not seen as ok to eat whilst moving. Best to eat whilst standing outside of the shop
7:27 yeah whenever I go to a tourist city I get food poisoning, last time I vomited in an elevator. a good rule of thumb is to go where the locals go as the big known restaurants can pretty much do whatever since whoever eats there will probably not be back in a few years, there are always new people so they don't worry about having a good reputation

Thank you for the food segment in the video. I went to japan earlier this year too and was also kinda bummed about the food. I heard that the food would be amazing, but after a week of ramen, sushi and other popular meals, I found myself very often in McDonalds and western type resturants as well.
If you're like super into fish meals, you gonna love japans food, but as a westerner I just couldnt stomage it for three weeks.
...and I nearly threw up trying takoyaki :P
Edit: BUT of course not everything is bad. Especially stuff like Gyu-Kaku (where you cook the meat on a little stove in front of you) was amazing!

I live and work in Japan, and it’s interesting to see you to also come here, even if for just a trip.
I think Japan is a good country, at least it has been for me. I even have a good work-life balance (something that Japan doesn’t excel at, at least according to people who don’t live in Japan). Or maybe I just got very lucky.
Anyway, if you ever want to really live in Japan, prepare to learn Japanese. I have seen the people who try to survive without Japanese language skills, and it is brutal. It isn’t like Japanese people hate foreigners (I’d guess about the same amount as in any other country) but most just can’t speak English well enough, so you will feel very isolated, even if you make the occasional English speaking friend.
I personally love Japanese food, and it is so cheap to eat outside you could do it everyday. So i do (almost). Another personal favourite of mine, maybe even more so than Japanese food is Korean food. I just seem to like almost every kind of food here, even natto (tastes like chocolate lol).

If you have nearby convenience stores and donburis (pork, beef, chicken on rice) you should be good.
"Corner shops", "(japanese) Mcdonalds"... You're eating pretty fine! That's what I get when I go (when not going for the overtly japanese cuisine), the differences of food that's meant to be so familiar is very interesting to try! My only gripe is that you didn't go for some more Yoshoku food, basically japanese versions of "western" cuisine.

Im 193cm (6.4 foot?) and its already hard to have to crouch down just to not hit your head on the bus, or fit your legs into the tram seats.
I'm in Japan right now and there are sandwiches in every single convenience stores, and there are many cafes where you can buy sandwiches as well. Also don't know how you keep running into fishy foods on accident. There are tons of non-fishy foods. Ramen, soba, yakiniku, yakitori, steaks...
Definitely a fun country to visit though!

Please consider Vietnam for your next trip! I went there in april and it was beautiful, travel from north to south or vice versa, you will love it!

"japan do not believe in sandwiches" except theyre known for many of their sandwiches ranging from dessert sandwiches to filling egg sandwiches.
When I went to Japan I was shocked about all the fish in every food too ^^ Being vegan meant eating was a daily worry instead of somthing fun. But I found that either cooking by yourself or buying like 3-5 salted plain rice balls from a convenience store was a pretty good option. :-)

Japan has TONNES of tasty non-fish food. I don't like fish-tasting stuff either. I still live a great life with loads of good food.

If you want something interesting and a bit off the beaten path, I highly recommend the Balkan countries. Recently visited Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia and a day trip in Bosnia & Herzegovina. Can honestly say I loved them all, and very under appreciated (imo). You won't get big grand cities like Tokyo, but a lot of charm
I've been to Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia (Day trip like you, to that rebuilt bridge that people jump off). And I love their generous meaty dishes there. Think we're going to the Uzbekistan-area countries next

I'd love to do central Asia as well, there are direct flights to Aktau in Western Kazakhstan now from London, seems to be the only direct flight I could find to the region without going via Istanbul or something.
@@kliksphilipWhich part of Bosnia have you visited? If you ever visit again, I recommend coming to Jajce. There is a lot of medieval stuff, beautiful nature, and most importantly, good food.

@@tihi1788 not that you're asking me, but we went to Trebinje and it was stunning. I was really shocked by how beautiful it was. Kotor in Montenegro is often mentioned for its old town, but I much preferred the old town in Trebinje and the views everywhere were stunning. It's definitely on our list to explore more of the country!
