  • Did you know that the angel we see in the first episode of Neon Genesis Evangelion has a religious name that may explain what inspired the relationship between Shinji and his father? Let me explain!

The angel in episode 1 is called Sachiel. Which in Hebrew means: "God is my righteousness". It is the angel of mercy. Sometimes seen as the unnamed angel who holds back Abraham to prevent him from sacrificing his son Isaac, and because of this, the angel is often shown holding a dagger.
Gendo Ikari believes it is his duty to sacrifice his son Shinji in the fight against the angels.
So we have Gendo, Shinji and Sachiel, just like in the Bible there's Abraham, Isaac and the angel.
But there is more: The story of Abraham and Isaac is sometimes seen as foreshadowing the Gospel: God the Father sacrificing his son Jesus on the cross to save mankind. And angels announcing God's saving mercy on the morning of the resurrection.
Guess what happens right after Gendo orders his son to get into the Eva? The angel causes an explosion in the shape of a cross... A coincidence? Let me know what you think and follow for more!
