Why Evangelion's Endings Make Each Other Better

  • Video essay about the interplay between Evangelion's original televised ending and the follow-up film End of Evangelion and how it speaks to the nature of endings themselves. Spoilers ahead for the original series and EoE, though not the Rebuilds. There are also flashing lights, animated depictions of body horror and violence against women, and oblique references to suicide.

    I always assumed that the ending of the series is more like what shinji was imagining, like what was going on in his head during the third impact. while EoE is what ACTUALLY happened, it kind of makes sense why the series felt like a happy ending, in his mind he thought that rejecting the impact would be a good thing, a thing that will make him happy and bring everyone that he wants back. but the movie ending is what actually happened in reality, thats just my thought though could be completly wrong

      More like the series ending is the instrumentality process on the inside, in the spiritual/mental realm. The text cards in the episodes more or less say so.

    • @Simp4Gwyn
      @Simp4Gwyn 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      I personally can't see how that's the case considering how different the two endings are for Shinji, one is him overcoming (or at least starting to overcome) his own psychological issues.
      While EoE is him falling deeper into them, ultimately destroying the world. EoE is a very angry film, especially towards Shinji (who is almost explicitly supposed to to Anno)
      The two endings demonstrate the paths Shinji could take.

    • @JurzGarz
      @JurzGarz 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      @@Simp4Gwyn I don't think the two endings are as different as you imply. Shinji still comes to the same conclusion about life in the End of Evangelion that he does in the anime. Furthermore, Instrumentality still occurs in the anime, meaning the world is still destroyed. The process by which it happens is just left unstated.
      I do agree that EoE is a very angry film, and the tone of the ending is very different. But I see the End of Evangelion as more of a realistic take on overcoming depression. In the anime ending Shinji has his epiphany and is happy, the end. In the movie, Shinji still has his epiphany, but getting better is going to be a process, and all his issues and relationships aren't going to be solved overnight. Hence the final scene with Asuka. There's a hope that the two of them will become better and learn from their mistakes. But in the present, they're disgusting.

    • @Simp4Gwyn
      @Simp4Gwyn 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@JurzGarz that's a fair assessment to make, I just can't see them being meant to be the same ending from different perspectives, simply because of the completely different tones the two take.
      From a canonicity stand point, Evangelion is all but stated to be cyclical, so something being or not being canon isn't an issue (I know you didn't mention that, I just wanted to).
      The show would have had to have skipped pretty far into the future for it to have reached that conclusion, and to take the ending of the original as it literally being instrumentality I think misses the point of the two episodes. Where Shinji is seriously contemplating his existence from the perspective of others.
      While in EoE, Shinji is the farthest from ever considering others in his own mind. He locks himself in a shell and refuses to leave up until the very end of the film.
      Tone, I think, informs everything about the endings.
      Just my opinion though, I can see where you're coming from.

      @JurzGarz 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Simp4Gwyn "and to take the ending of the original as it literally being instrumentality I think misses the point of the two episodes."
      Thing is, the show literally tells us that what's being shown is Instrumentality. Of course the metaphorical and thematic meanings are what is important in the last two episodes, but in the literal plot sense, instrumentality occurs in both the show and the movie.
      On the topic of "canonicity": I'm of the personal opinion that "canon" is an almost irrelevant question when it comes to whether fans should accept a given entry in a series (any series, not just Evangelion). I think everyone is free to build their own headcanons. This attitude has freed me to enjoy a lot of series whose later entries I find to be disappointing. Canon is important for writers maintaining internal consistency, but fans should feel free to decide what their own canon is.
      So really, which endings of Evangelion you want to acknowledge as part of the story is a question of "whatever floats your boat".

    1:23, this is actually a myth. Eva did not run out of money at any point, it was actually quite high budget for the time.
    The issue was more poor planning and other behind the scenes messes that caused them to run out of time for what Anno wanted.
    4:35, I also disagree with your reading here. Imo, it's clear that Shinji has been on the beach for quite a while, just look at how he's nailed misatos cross to a wooden peg and that the cross has a small ammount of rust. I see his strangling Asuka not as a rejection of others, but rather as a Conformation of them. After all the shit he's been through, Shinji is doesn't really know if what he's seeing us real. Is this actually Asuka? Or is it another figment of the sea of LCL? Out of his mind and desperate to find some way of knowing if she is real, Shinji strangles her again, trying to make her hurt and reject him so that she knows she's really there. Instead, Asuka responds by showing tenderness to him. At this, Shinji both knows she is real, and at the same time the horror of what he was doing truly sets in, and then he breaks down. Asukas is then a Conformation that while she is willing to show him kindness, she hasn't forgotten his mistakes and hasn't forgiven him.

      There's a documentary about Hideako Anno. Watch that documentary and then watch the rebuild films. When you see Shinji, picture him as an avatar for Anno, and the rebuilds are gonna come off as beautiful. Yes they're nowhere near as good as they original and have a lot of glaring issues, but they're still worth a watch
      Don't go into them expecting a 1:1 recreation of Evangelion or End Of Evangelion. Alot of people get too obsessed with it being different and loose their minds over it. It dosent contradict or erase the original series, it'll always be there and it'll always be the same, take Evangelion:RE as a new journey, a different look into how Evangelion could've gone with an open mind.
      Don't let people's criticism online form your opinion.
      They have alot of good stuff aswell, Rei is highlight as she is much more developed and her relationship with Shinji is extremely sweet, alot of the weird stuff is also no longer present, no Shinji hospital scene or Misato making out with him or anything like that. Really beautifully written video. Each ending is a half truth and they come together to form the whole. But even with the whole truth there are so many unknowns that can only be understood with time.
    I originally thought the difference between these endings was that they showed each of the possible outcomes of Shinji’s decision of whether to carry on through the pain or to regress further within himself, but watching this video has helped me realize they show the same outcome. I assumed that making the “right” choice, to choose love in spite of the promise of pain, was all blue skies and congratulations. But the whole truth is that it can also be the bleak, desolate landscape of giving into hatred and being rejected for it. But not always. Sometimes it’s one, and sometimes it’s the other. You take the good with the bad. Believing things will be all good from here on because you chose love is naive, because life isn’t that simple. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth making that choice.

      To further this point, it can also be argued the manga’s ending can be seen as a companion piece to the series, film and especially the “rebuild” endings. Each touches on different aspects of what it means to continue on living as well as the franchise’s relationship to escapism due to the differing state of the world and other characters in each version of the story and their various endings.
      The more of the series I’ve seen, the more apparent that the best way to understand it is from a meta-textual and meta-narrative perspective rather than purely from its plot, which alone has a multitude of loose threads that fail to tie up neatly and unanswered questions that never got to be given proper answers. And its in this sense that each version of Evangelion begins to act more like a sequel to the last than a reboot, expanding upon the story’s themes with each deviation and hopefully provide a sense of closure to those who felt closure was needed. How successful they manages to be is obviously up to the individual to decide, but rarely have I seen a story told in such a way.

    So the rebuild films retcon the tv series and movie endings by stating that evangelion is a loop a kind of Groundshog Day if u will
    Tv and movies are both bad endings that will continue to be until shinji breaks this loop by getting a good ending
    In the final film Kaworu is seen getting out of 1 of many coffins seen on the moon he says that he is stuck playing an infinite roll in this circular narrative
    And u see empty coffins where he has done this before and more coffins where he will do this again .. the moon is also covered in blood from the events of end of evangelion
    In the human instrumentality in the final film shinji also says that he now remembers kaworu and this isn’t the first time he has met him and done this before

    Apparently in Japanese, her line during the ending is different. Instead of "How disgusting", whe says "I feel sick", which the dub for the anime itself also had a few cases where Asuka saying she felt sick was replaced with her stating she was disgusted.
    Note: my source is TV Tropes, so grain of salt.

    The real ending of Evangelion is the end of the 4th rebuild film. Through Kowrou's comments in those films, we can gather that Shinji has recreated the world countless times through the Human Instrumentality project, but keeps getting stuck in the same cycle of destruction every time. The finale of the last film shows Shinji finally breaking that cycle and creating a world free of Angels, Evas, numbered impacts, and all the things that had brought him pain.

    Let's not perpetuate the budget thing. While there was financial trouble at Ginax, the reason why the last 2 are so weird is time. Ep 24 was turned in right before the airing, and thus was able to allow Kaworu to die, land they made the episodes in order, TIME was the critical factor

    A bit unrelated, but I think one of the reasons that I really like the NGE and TEOE is because it's one of the first times I've seen a boy's puberty being depicted so raw and psychological. For female depictions, it's always twisted and gory like Teeth, Carrie, and Ginger Snaps. It's just such a beautiful piece whether you watch it at your lowest or with a clear mind.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, just letting you know

      I feel too many people misunderstood the message of Evangelion, because I've seen so many people say that EoE and the TV ending are thematically different when they are really the same thing from different perspectives. Both end the same, to say otherwise is missing the point in my opinion. Shinji choking Asuka doesn't mean he didn't learn his lesson from Instrumentality, it shows that even if you accept the difficulties of reality, you don’t always know what to do.

Think of it like Undertale, every timeline is cannon only for the run you're currently doing- that doesn't mean the others aren't cannon or don't exist, just that they didn't happen this time. Shinjin in EoE apparently fell deeper into his own darkness and couldn't find his happy ending, rebuild (3.0+1.0) is him finally reaching his happy ending and NGE, I don't know wether to say it's neutral or not

    Rebuild isn't a complement to the others it's a contradiction.

    EoE was a spiteful response from Anno to the reactions to thankless EoTV series end. That is why it is kind of the opposite to EoTV and pretty much a SHinji bash too. Even though EoE and EoTV are kind of opposed to each other, positive and negative really, I do think there was a kind of last minute positive growth for Shinji either into adulthood or at least a better person that realises he should open himself up and grow with these characters and the world in both. Though it is smidgen of last minute growth Fans of EoTV and EoE tend to overly enhance it in order to justify those endings as positive and affirming.
    Rebuild is a jaggered rehash of EoTV/EoE but also the antithesis to both. Not only does it imply that Shinji did not grow and learn anything last two times, but even further to say that Shinji can only be a child in this world, and if he wants to be anything else he has to find his own place just not with any actual eva characters. The reason for this is because Rebuild is aimed specifically at Eva Otakus with the unbendable rule that they/Shinji didn't grow or get the message. Which negates and undermines so much of the other unsatisfying endings.
    Rebuild isn't a complement it's a confliction. Not only with the others but Rebuild is at odds even with itself, like there is so much hypocrisy with it that annihilates itself and the other ones in many ways.
    I do think there was an effort to make it lore consistent, at least within the rigid constraints and purpose of being 'a commentary/PSA on and for Eva Otakus and justifying, understanding and well stroking off Gendo' that seem to mandate this.
    Probably why everything in Rebuild seems so contrived, convoluted and hypocritical to me, as those two mandates are at odds with each other IMO.

    I hate the End of Evangelion.
    Because it forced me to relive my trauma, I felt mentally violated like Asuka by the angel Arael, it gave me nightmares about the Third Impact.
    The reason for this, is because in the beginning of 2020, my childhood friend committed suicide at age 16. This broke me.
    But this also triggered my trauma from 10th grade wherein I was bullied from my Autism so much, that my peers sexually assaulted me, and the adults did absolutely nothing to help me. I was very suicidal in those days.
    I saw the End of Evangelion by accident after my friend's suicide, and....
    To make matters worse, Lockdown was right around the corner. And I was going stark staring paranoid that Eva was predicting my reality.
    When I sought emotional support on the Evangelion fandom, hoping they'd understand given the context of the show, they cyberbullied for my depression. It's the ultimate irony; a fandom, dedicated to praising a series that portrays the cost of trauma; downplayed my own. They said it was impossible for me to be traumatized by an anime, and that everything that was happening to me during Lockdown was all in my head. I thought I was going completely insane.
    Is it okay to hate Evangelion, even if the fandom hates so much they wish death and eternal suffering upon you for being unable to enjoy it?
