the second movie, ¨the end of evangelion¨ is the final conclusion. It's a must-watch. lot's of religious iconography there too. the first one is just a compilation of the series

Might I recommend "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood". Although it, obviously, deals a lot in alchemy; classical alchemy uses a great deal of Christian and Jewish religious symbolism that you might find interesting how it is interrupted and integrated.
also, "each angel is terrifying." yeah... that's why they usually lead off with "BE NOT AFRAID." when dealing with a mortal.
    slight spoiler:
the reason the children are the ones who piolet, and are in fact the only ones capable of piloting the EVAs is
their mother's souls have been entrapped in them. unit 01, has Shinji's mother's full soul, unit 02 has a fragment of the very broken Asuka's mother's soul, and unit 00 is a special case as Rei is well special. this is a by product of experimentation on Adam and Lilith called the "contact experiments" and their outcome is a major driving force for Gendo Ikari's drive. while canon it's not something you are going to find simply watching the series.

I hereby call this video… The Evangelus.
You get it, Father. The final two episodes made me cry and realized that I am a child of the Universe; I belong here.
Now please do watch the Rebuilds! 🙏🏽

The REIbuilds are a "middle finger" to the toxic fandom who ignored the Existentialism of the original series/EoE...
It's like those who read Nietzsche and only come away with Nihilism/Narcissism/Consumerism...
You make them something completely absurd and overwhelming, until the taste of their idolatry sours on their tongues...
Hideaki Anno also does liveaction, and he's the Stanley Kubrick/Alejandro Jodorowsky of Japan.

I was lucky enough to be an American kid who is digesting these episodes in real time as they came out in 1996 at my local independent video store. Me and my friend,Armando, would go in every week and beg the clerk, “please, do you have the newest Evangelion VHS?“, And every couple of weeks, or once a month, the clerk would say “yes!“
We watched them on the edge of our seat, watching the 2-episode, subtitled, tape over and over again, pausing frames to glean information and speculate.
Soon I had brought other friends into our fascination. Pun, no doubt inevitable, like a religious experience, we sat enraptured as the story unfolded.
I, like you, may be in the minority in loving episodes 25-26-but we had followed so closely and had so much pent-up speculation, that we were far beyond wanting an action-packed conclusion. For us, the surreal and introspective resolution was far more interesting because it fed us little bits of answers we had been craving.
I’ve now seen that original VHS version of the show seven-times and each time there is new nuances revealed.
I’ll also say, having seen various versions over the years, on DVD and Blueray, both Dubbed and Subbed-The original VHS with subtitles is still my favorite (and I think best) translation.

I think people misunderstand that interview. I think what he's trying to say is that the show doesn't have a religious "message". It's not saying "god is the way and shinji needs to convert to Christianity" and instead it's just heavily inspired by Christianity as more of an artistic influence

  • @BradyRamaker
    @BradyRamaker 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Evangelion is ironically very easy to understand if you know one thing:
The key to unlocking this series is absolutely everything from the characters to the themes and motifs is just a dialectic between intimacy and alienation, and the fluidity of human identity. On one hand you have utter alienation, embodied by the angels, which are each wholly unique and singular beings. Some of them are so foreign to our concept of life they break physics, and some seem incapable of interacting with others except through violence, a fundamentally alienating act. On the other extreme, you have Human Instrumentality, which is complete and utter homogenity of being. In this state, individuality ceases to be. "You" are not even a concept anymore, because that implies there is more than one person (You vs Me vs Us vs Them, etc). All people are one person, an undifferentiated being.
Over the course of the show the, Anno riffs on this idea to varying degrees. Age, sexuality, maturity, family, everything is up for grabs in an uncomfortable mess.

First time watching your videos and I loved your take on it! I know before I got into the series I kept hearing so much negativity about the show with its ending as well as the long pauses, but when I experienced it myself I resonated so much with it. It was not only able to combine a cool mech show, but also the struggles and self discovery of characters that many people could relate to on some level. Anno and the team did a fantastic job with it and I'm glad Netflix and other platforms are giving people a chance to experience it.

i havent watched this video yet, commenting so i remember to later, as well as talk about how Eva affected me. After watching the original episodic series, i was left someone confused at the end. We (shinji and us, the viewers) had made it. but to where? how? i wasnt sure if i was supposed to be happy or not. after that, i had watched the movie, the "true" ending of the TV series. i was depressed. so fucking depressed. everyone was gone, everyone was dead, in the end there was nothing. i was a changed person for weeks after that. eventually, i finally managed the courage to watch the 4 movies, and it was almost cathartic, seeing everything come together, explain how their world kept repeating, and seeing shinji completely end the process and end up in the "real" world. it was like watching Hideaki Anno come back to the world, and it helped me do the same

I’ve never gotten a chance to watch Eva in it’s entirety, but it’s definitely something on my queue to rewatch from start to finish. Much of its themes are pretty interesting. I would warn some that it’s not necessarily for kids, it’s something for young adults to watch and relate to. I think one big reason for why I watch anime is because there are many with religious and philosophical themes along side just being general entertainment. I am looking forward to future videos Father!

I remember when it aired on Adult Swim when I was in high school in 2006-2007. I didn’t have a DVR in my home yet and I had to work a night shift at McDonald’s so I often missed a lot of episodes. I was mildly intrigued by it, but was kinda turned off by the “old” (1995) production quality, so I somewhat ignored it. My friend however who did have a DVR loved it and insisted I watch it, so I started to watch a few episodes, but it’s a show that you have to really watch in sequential (not randomly tuning in during reruns) in order to really appreciate, so I still didn’t grasp the full story. Eventually my friend let my borrow his DVD of End of Evangelion (definitely not for kids lol) and I remember it traumatized me a little bit also left me intrigued to know more. When I started going to college and had access to high speed internet, I was able to watch the entire series in order on TH-cam (copyright enforcement was very lax back then, lol) and I was blown away but it, and I was able to watch EoE again with more understanding and truly appreciated it. Evangelion taught me that anime can be more than just “popcorn entertainment” it can have deep and involving plot lines and character building that leave a lasting impression on you. It got me into discussing anime on online forums, which was something I never did before, because I wanted to talk about Evangelion with others who had watched it and discuss all the themes and plot points of it. I remember being ecstatic when the Evangelion Rebuild 1.0 came blu ray and me and my same friend from high school discussed it more. We also went to a special screening of Rebuild 2.0 in Dallas which is something I’ll never forget!

NGE was one of the first massive animes dedicated to a young transitioning to adult life audience. That’s why is having such deep conversations. Then it is also one of the animes that introduced the idea of not having everything in the plot well connected, that’s why there’s so much strange things that are canon and people that have elaborated theories about its universe as well. That’s one of the beauties about being a fan of this series, you can’t run out of things to add and say about it. For me this was the anime thanks to which I understood what anime is, since everything I watched before I was taking it as Japanese cartoons or Japan themed cartoons.

I feel like I should point out that you called the Angels "robots". They aren't robots. They're living beings powered by a Super Solenoid organ which provides them with unlimited energy, but limited creative potential. And since most of them are enormous in size, they're essentially _kaiju._ Even the Evangelion units are cybernetically-enhanced clones of Adam, the progenitor of the Angels, operated by a human pilot. In fact, the only true Giant Robot in the original series is Jet Alone.

I dont find any religious meaning in this series at all. However, it is DRIPPING with spiritual and transcendental meaning. I think that people get the sense that, even if theyre totally confused, there is something deeper going on here.
The main theme is obviously being the relationship between separation and connection and the individual person relating to others. We are the source of both pain and love for each other, and that seemingly paradoxical tragedy forms the core of not only the theme, but the plot, and the central anxiety and drama of pretty much every human's life.
I dont find that religions actually tap into that much other than just providing some vague god to guide you from beyond and eventually promises you perfect connection. But there's not a deep exploration. I think eastern religions tend to do this better because it's a journey within an individual's own soul, not some perfect savior coming to put it right for us.

  • @zalaathrun20
    @zalaathrun20 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Actually 26 Episodes is somewhat short for a anime, specially from the 90’s and previews then anime could go 50, 100, or more episodes. Now a days 25-26 are the standard for a single season of episodes in a year and then they come back the following year with another 25-26 eps, adapting the manga material (considering it is adaptation a pre-existing manga). Back in the 90s and early 2000’s the series go on non-stop as long as the ratings where good and whenever the anime caught up to the events of the manga they usually did original history arcs, to give time the manga to advance.
But while not always, but most times that filler as it came to be known, came to be disliked by the fans, to the point that some animes have being rebooted after the manga ended to do the “original manga ending” instead of the “non-original tv ending”, some examples are Fullmetal Alchemist, Hellsing, Shaman King.
But some filler has being welcome by the anime fans like the Asgard arc, in the series on Saint Seiya, which was made after the success of the Asgard inspired OVA (Original Video Animation), making and 26 original tv story that it was not on the Masami Kurumada’s manga, and was put between the manga canon arcs one the Sanctuary and Poseidon (the first and second big arcs of the manga).

Agree with you 100%; been saying it for years, and every re-watch just confirms it at a new level. Granted, the meaning/correlation of the story to the symbol is almost never direct/obvious, but it is definitely there. And yes, the final two episodes are peak anime, once you break free of the shock in storytelling/genre. The only "revisions" for them they did that are *almost* as good is in Episode 4 of the Rebuilds (but that version [the Rebuild series] is essentially a self-contained separate canon).

It's the character psychology, similar to shows like Digimon or the Sopranos, it delves into the minds of its cast. Similar to Shakespear there is alot to get from it, and alot to be annoyed at, I personally wish it was longer, maybe like 2 or 3 seasons.

I love the last episodes, people who didn't get it, didn't understand the whole show and Shinji's inner path. No binary ending with a big fight needed.

I personally prefer the original TV series and Ending movie over the "Redo" Movies, I feel the old series reflects the creators original vision more than the REDO movies, the redos felt like "here, here's what you wanted, now take it" it has that kind of vibe to it.

the angels arent robots they are living things, they are an alternate form of life from us, and the evangelions arent robots either they are clones of the first angel adam infused with the souls of the pilots mothers, thats why they need those children to pilot them only they can sync with their mother;s souls, and the reason they need the evangelions is because they can project an AT-field just like the angels which allows them to break through the Angels own AT-field and allow them to fight effectively, but neither the evangelions of the angels are robots, the evas are just clones of adam with cybernetics, they are cyborgs

The TV endings are vastly superior because they give us more psychological insight to Shinji. The movies manufacture this hero character to please audiences.
I’m with you Father, the TV endings are very good and the only endings in my opinion.

World from my perspective I found that the Evangelion is kind of disturbing at the one hand but at the other and can make you think about many things in your life like what decisions are the right what's the wrong and so on Bad derending is quite questionable I guess so I don't understand it even after I watch it several times but all in all it's the very good Serie

@Father Roderick: You might want to check out the Macross anime Franchise eventually. Its latest movie "Macross Delta; Zettai Live" is FULL of gnostic and religious allegory. Most of Macross however is more contempory sci-fi melodrama.

They might not be christian, but the best respect is when outsiders put the time and effort in to understand your passions. I've met far too many lifelong christians that knew less about christianity than the average atheist to the point where it was clear that if christians were correct about believing in and trusting in god, they would probably have the least per capita heaven attendence and that's an incredibly sad fact about christians.

have you watched 'End of Evangelion'? it is another (sort-of) ending but is a direct sequel to the original series. the other movies are a semi-reboot.
I will say though, there are some--- deplorable acts in that one. just a warning.
