    Adopted a 17 year old ginger kitty from my local shelter who lived to be 24 years of age. She ate high quality food and I had her blood tested every 6 months. She was my Only Sunshine, a sweet, loving pet. Miss her, she's been gone now for 3 years. She'd become deaf from old age and I became her ears. She loved to ride in the car, and also enjoyed the warm hair dryer on her fur. Now my Ragdoll enjoys it after having watched Sunny loving it!

      @fluffy9589 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yep agree!
      I've lseen the effect of what love and attention can do in 2 of my cats.
      One traumatized one, which - according to my vet and later someone at a shelter said - had lived beyond the average life expectations of a white cat. Average would be 10, but P. lived until 14 to 15 (stray with already removed parts of her dentures and that made it harder to guess apparently).
      I did nothing else than give her time and she seemed to feel that as she still had lots of things to conquer and she was still in hiding after the first time, but the fact was/is that she started out trembling and making herself as small as possible, wanting to disappear through the wall... I kept the routine of spending time near her but aar enough zway at the same time, sat down and talked, let her get used to me. She needed 2 days to sniff my hands, because on the 3rd she sniffed and *boom* she rolled on her side/back and very carefully I tried to approach her belly. Not necessary per se, she almost sucked up my hand for a long time. She had obviously craved the cuddles. The bathroom where she hid was the only time I actively went to her and not just let her. Something told me to do so.
      4 days later no more hiding in my bathroom and 4 days after that, on my birthday, she stood next to the sofa, jumped on it, keeping a constant eye on me, where I blinked at her to show it was okay and safe. And there she went.... 1 paw, 2 paws, whole cat. Best birthday gift ever ❤️🐾🐾
      In the next 5 years to come she still had things to conquer but she did. After the bathroom.everything was at her pace and I figured she became a cat when she stole my lunch from my back pack for the first time 😂
      We also played "who got the yoghurt" every night. Talked to my vet if that was OK, just a small amount each day and she said it was fine and it wouldn't hurt her. She mostly loved banana yoghurt, but any yoghurt was fine. Got a lick in between while she kept trying to steal it from me lol. And afterwards she knew she got to lick out the cup or bowl, but it felt like play between us.
      That hurt most when she passed away. No more sharing my yoghurt.
      Had 2 cats after her, I spoiled them too much with cuddles 😁.
      I try to adopt seniors, but the traumatized one was 7. I had fallen in love over the Internet and knew she would be mine and we'd be great together.
      My then vet said he would have euthanized her when I first went to see him after 3 months. I understood why. The level of anxiety went through the roof and while she made herself small and trembled, vet took distance and asked if that was how I got her from the shelter. He told me her level of anxiety was way too high for him to feel she would ever recover, but he had to take my word for the difference at home where she loved tummy rubs and sat on my lap, only startled very easily. 2 years later he asked me if I had adopted a different white cat or if it really was the same one. Same one, didn't startle anymore. I could wiggle my toes and not have her jump off in panic anymore.
      My vet was very happy to see he basically was wrong, while I had known she surely would be fine since the minute I laid eyes on her. So happy he was not the shelter's vet.... And that he or she didn't do what mine wanted to.
      She was a doll. Never once hissed, bit or scratched me. I miss her ❤️
      (and my 3 other kitties I had. I just picked her story because it was the longest one in terms of trauma and fear and how much love can mean to an animal 😊)

      I've had tigers, tabbies, tuxedos, cow-kitties, even a polydactyl.
      My one kitty was the runt of her litter, that I took to calling her Little. Then I also started her Girly, Girly-Q Lookit You, Squirly, etc. I never had one name for my kitties. I gave them many nicknames based on their personality quirks.

      I agree with John Rhogan!! Love and affection, and I add, Fun!! ,Surprises!!! (every time I yell: "surprise" my 2 cats get so excited because they know they are going to get ham, or tuna or sour cream), and as the word surprises, I have other words, that makes them really happy, and I am sure keeps them wanting to live!!! like: at mornings, I say: "who wants mommy?!!!", and both of them come and get really close to me so I can pamper them!!!, they are our babies!!! Let's keep them happy, so hey want to live longer, and they will!!!

    My cat died on New Years day from a urinary obstruction. My vet said it would not have happened had he not been neutered so early. She said the latest science is telling us to wait until a male cats urinary tract is fully matured before having them neutered to make sure that they have sufficient sized equipment to pass any crystals that may be in their urine. I sincerely hope that this new information gets out so that male cats don't have to keep suffering with such horrible illnesses.

      Actually, they said that there is no correlation between having your cat neutered young and Urinary obstruction. www.acvs.org/small-animal/urinary-obstruction-cats "Early neutering of cats does not cause reduction of urethral size as in some other species." I have had many cats and most lived to be over 18 years old. They were all neutered young and never had any problem. My vet (who's specialty is neutering and spaying) actually said it is fine because the recovery time is less with younger cats, so it's a less traumatic experience for them. I'm just telling my side of the story to the people that might have neutered their cats young too. I'm not a vet, so I don't know. I think it's best to find vets that you feel good about and listen to their suggestions.

    Another important things are affection and love. Seriously, my friend's cat lives until 21 because it's treated like her own child.
    My neighbor is an old lady who only own one cat as her only soulmate, now her cat is 18 and still active even though I'm kinda worried that she just gives anything for her cat to eat. Then the oldest cat in the world mostly living with a lot of affection from their owner even they're an outdoor cat. Indoor cat needs a lot of toys and affection to keep them entertained, I always remind my friends whenever they're adopt cats to keep it indoor, don't forget to play with them. Cat probably not asking too much affection like dog, but they're need it so much from their owner to keep them happy and healthy.
    The outdoor cat must be neutralise no matter what to keep them stay only around the house and not going too far (looking for a mate) and make sure the environment is safe enough for your cat to go around, also keep giving it a good food that it's love. Luckily my outdoor cat is very picky eater, he doesn't like to eat insects or any small animals or looking at garbage or stealing food.

I wish I spent more time with her before. The thought of losing her fills me with grief. She is my best friend. The pain of losing her would be like losing your child. It isnt fair that cats can't live as long as us. It would make it so much easier if I could have her throughout my whole life. Even better if I pass away before her. I love my cat. Maybe you mentioned this but if so, I missed it. I think it’s very important to have more than one cat usually, depending on the cat of course. We often try to adopt a second cat without letting our current cat help decide which cat to adopt, & after all, it’s the cat who’ll be spending more time with the new cat. Let them help decide, rather than foisting a total stranger on them...no wonder so many cats get upset over a newcomer. Some cats seem to prefer being the only cat, but most cats really like having feline companions. Imagine what it must be like living with an alien species and having no one of your own species around. However close a cat-human relationship is, I think it’s essential for a cat to have a companion of their own species. However close a person is with a cat, there are still some things you can’t do for your cat, things a cat companion can do. Not merely grooming...communication between cats is very important & however hard we try we’re unable to communicate as well with a cat as another cat can. While cats seem to understand a great deal of what we say, I think we understand much less of what they say, merely because we’re a different species & have different organs.
    Also, in almost 70 yrs of living with various species of animals, I’ve found that most animals do much better if they have a companion of their own kind. They’re happier, get into less trouble, are generally much easier to live with if there are two. But it’s important to let the cat (or other animal) help choose their companion. You wouldn’t want a total stranger brought in to live with you, would you? Sometimes there’s no choice... an animal needs a home immediately because of being in trouble, so you take the animal in immediately. But usually we have a choice of which animal is to live with us, so let your current one help decide on which ones are brought in. Makes them a lot happier & it saves us a lot of trouble.

    • @sandramac60
      @sandramac60 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jane Garner I completely agree with you. Even if you wind up with 3 cats, like I have, and the relationships are very different, one to another, they are happier and more engaged when they are not an "only child." Especially if they are indoor-only cats.

    My cat passed away last week at age 16 and 4 months. He had kidney disease for 2 years 5 months. I brought him to the vet 4 times a month and gave him a kidney diet, but of course he also ate treats because like most cats he just couldn’t eat that diet alone. Is there something I did wrong? Should I have never fed him dry food his whole life? Would raw food diet from youth have prevented my best friend from getting kidney disease?

    Though they did touch on the subject a little in this video it’s extremely important to make sure your cat takes in as much water as possible everyday. Cats are notorious for not drinking enough water and they’ll often develop kidney problems as they get older because of it. I add some water to my cats daily serving of canned food and mix it in throughly until it looks more like a cat food shake. My cats love it and I’m happy knowing that they’re getting more water in their diet. If you want you can even warm it up in the microwave a little but be careful not to get it to hot. Usually anywhere from around 10 to 15 seconds in the microwave is enough.

    What do I do if my cat won’t let me hold her? My cat is 4, and I’ve had her as a kitten, but she doesn’t like to be held at all. It makes it difficult to clip her nails and give her baths. Any suggestions?

    • @Tiger351
      @Tiger351 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Some cats just don't like being held at all (cats are very much individuals and most don't like baths or nail clipping regardless).
      As far as nail clipping goes, the most widely advised technique (and the one I use) is wrap them in a towel (if necessary) then sit and place them on their back between your thighs (being careful not to pinch their tail) then gently squeeze them between your thighs to hold them while holding their front paws in one hand. I would advise wearing jeans when doing this especially if your cat gets really aggressive when you try to clip her nails as most cats will use their back claws to try to get free if not held correctly or tightly enough. Several vet and cat rescue channels have videos showing this technique.
      As for bathing your cat you're kinda on your own, I've never found a good way that works with all cats to bath them but have found better success than most other ways by bathing them in a high sided laundry tub rather than an actual bathtub (or kitchen sink) as it keeps them more confined and easier for you to control. Some people will recommend making something of a game of bath time to make it less stressful for them (and you).
      It's always better to start doing these things when they're kittens and keep doing them routinely so your car gets used to it, either way best of luck and hope my reply has been helpful to you in some way.

Lots of my friends doing some things you advising. But their cats never lived more than 11 years. My first cat eat see fish and fresh meat. current cats . Life expectancy for an indoor cat = 16 years.
    Life expectancy for an outdoor cat = 2 1/2 years.
    Keep them indoors if you want them to live a long life.
    If you want them safe outdoors, build a catrun with access from indoors through a "catflap" in one of your windows.

    Have an old book on the history of cats as pets. There's a section of the book in which the longevity of various felines is commented on and it states that the 2 longest lived cats on record (ages 36 & 37, respectively) were both from the same area of Devon in the UK and ate lots of fresh seafood from the fishermen near the seaside quays. The book states that the older of the two died the day after a German buzz- bomb exploded near them and the other passed away before his 37th birthday. Told my vets about it and they said it sounded apocryphal.

    Don't understand why they are not advising people to give filtered water to keep those kidneys clean and healthy (no tap water) or feeding them what carnivorous cats need: meat not dry kibble. Also, after taking my 2 adorable cats religiously to the vet every year for 7 years and noticing them limping and looking weird after, only to lose them both to cancer, I decided that I will only give my current pair their first year vaccination and follow up and one booster a year later and that's it. They are indoors and doing extremely well at 15. Maybe I was lucky, maybe not but I will never shake the guilt I experience every time I think I might be the one who killed my babies by poisoning them repeatedly.
