    Another good informative video Bradley. As somebody still deciding if the Polestar is the right EV for me it’s hugely beneficial to get real owner feedback, good and less positive. As you know there are some interesting options coming to UK shores this year, and really interested to see how the Nissan Aryia and Ford Mustang E-Mach stack up. Keep up the great work.

    The "2 hours" driving was an estimate by Polestar on how long a typical download would take. However it will download in small segments when it can, and/or the 4G is still active for sometime after you park the car. I think it's 72 hours until the car fully shuts down. Everyone just assumed it meant one long drive ... but can be 10 short drives.
    Anything before the 24th Feb is OLD ... the 24th Feb and beyond was the RECALL software to do with the drive train shutting down - as mentioned on your captions.

      Would be nice to get transparency about the progress of the download though, maybe a persistent notification

    Will be interesting to see if mine ever downloads this.
    I did have an odd activation of anti-collision yesterday when a friend passed in front of the car as I was slowly starting to back up. The car interrupted power and braked 3-4 times in quick succession. My dashcam was running so I caught it on video. It just shows the car smoothly starting to back up and then some rhythmic slowdowns.

    Some folks may be getting downloading mixed up with installing.
    Last time I charged up, I also downloaded the update via my phone's hotspot function by typing in the password I set intentionally for the Tesla. Worked fine and when I got home I had it installed after the car was shut off.

    Having the car plugged in ties up certain modules which does not allow them to be updated. That's why the car needs to be unplugged and not charging during the update.

    I got an update failure message. 67% battery, not plugged in. However in the system menu I now see Android 10 where as before the update I was on 9. Everything appears to be OK. Lights, air con, music, parking breaks, Etc. LTE solid and WiFi too. I've not tried to put it on drive and roll yet. Not sure if that's a risk given the error. There are no error messages on the guage cluster. Should I or shouldn't I?

  • @ilmarw
    @ilmarw 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The reason you didn’t need to make a long drive might be that you already have the big update (A10/LTE) and that for you this was only a small safety update. For those with A9/4G it would likely take much longer?

    • @rudyptdy
      @rudyptdy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's definitely correct

  • @ken830
    @ken830 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is okay, I guess... but Tesla has been doing OTA updates since 2012. It's now 2021. And Teslas can be updated while plugged-in and with you sitting in the car.

    • @abraxastulammo9940
      @abraxastulammo9940 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you need wlan or is the builtin 4g sufficient?

    • @ken830
      @ken830 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@abraxastulammo9940You don't need a data connection at all to install the update (unless you want to initiate the installation remotely via your app). But you do need a data connection for the vehicle to download the update. It will only download over WiFi unless you have Premium Connectivity. All Tesla vehicles (except original Roadster) up to late 2018 have this for free. Newer vehicles require a low $10/mo subscription, but that also gets you unlimited data for music and video streaming and the Internet Browser among other features.

      @@ken830 10 Dollar per month unlimited sounds great, can a wifi router connect to the car so you can use it as your regular internet connection from home (in emergencies)?

    • @ken830
      @ken830 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@abraxastulammo9940 unfortunately, no hotspot feature. But the browser is pretty much full featured, so you can use it for streaming videos or to do anything in a pinch.

    Im still waiting for mine to download but both the email and letter I have received from Polestar say that you need 40% battery and not be charging so its not just forum talk, it is set out by the manufacturer.

    Hello, I am considering getting a polestar 2. I have 2 daughters and need to have child seats for both. I noticed in videos that you have car seats installed. Are they easy to install and for your kids to get in and out? There was a consumer report that bashed the polestar because it was not “family friendly”. Thank you

    • @ShortCircuitPS2
      @ShortCircuitPS2  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, thanks for the message. Yes I have two car seats, my children who are 10 and 7 and they work well, much easier to strap them in than my previous BMW 330e! Very good amount of boot space too and the children like the fold down arm rest with cup holders. I'd say it's a good family car.

  • @DereckBreuning
    @DereckBreuning 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can confirm: I tried it the first time (my first OTA update) and first try it failed because the car didn’t have 40% battery BUT it was plugged in. Later that day it was unplugged with 80% and it came through correctly. Kind of weird how it doesn’t work when plugged in and below 40%. Maybe they will fix that in an OTA update 🤪

    • @mrbambix
      @mrbambix 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No they won't 'fix' that I hope because you definitely don't want an empty battery halfway through an update. Better be safe then sorry battery charge wise 😁👍

    • @DereckBreuning
      @DereckBreuning 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What I meant was the fix for being to update with battery under 40% WHILE plugged in for charging.

    • @XLoaferY
      @XLoaferY 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DereckBreuning no, because they're updating the battery management system. That's why the battery needs to be switched off. Switched off means disconnected (mechanically) so can't be plugged in.
      Next time you plug in, listen to the "clank" when the gates open for charging.

  • @frankr111th

    Seems odd you can't update the car while plugged in. Is there a log indicating what the update contains?

    • @ShortCircuitPS2
      @ShortCircuitPS2  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes there is a full log on the Polestar website. It's likely that being plugged in won't be an issue for future updates. Apparently this one including a mandatory recall software update which could be related to that

      @adrianwhite3774 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, i already had the A10/LTE version installed and then started this (presumably) minor OTA update whilst plugged in and charging. All seems to have worked fine.

  • @mrbambix
    @mrbambix 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I actually think the long drive to try to get the car to download is somewhat of a misinformation case unfortunately. Polestar will submit the update to the cars in batches if your car is in that batch it will get the update downloaded, driving around does nothing to speed this up or alter it really. I guess some people where so anxious they tried this idea but it does nothing for you really ;-)

  • @pbrady999
    @pbrady999 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This update was for a specific issue which is why the car needed to be not charging. It is not normal for the car just this update

    • @mrbambix
      @mrbambix 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually the reason for why the advise by Polestar to not connect the car whilst updating was very simple. In their testing it became apparent that with this update they saw a higher succesrate with disconnected cars while updating so they went with that advise. Mine was actually connected since I never got the mail with the 'warning' but mine updated fine.

    I had an update for my Tesla Model 3 yesterday and it installed whilst charging at Waitrose and took about 20 minutes whilst I sat in the car. :) The car will also download when connected to wifi even when not driving.

    • @TeslaDo_d
      @TeslaDo_d 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tesla's will only connect to WiFi that doesn't require a login screen. I can never update at a hotel, because every hotel has some form of login screen and generic password. The same is true for most restaurants. However, Walmart is fully open. I hope they stay that way. When I receive notification of a software update, I drive to the nearest Wal-mart and park next to the building. The nice thing is that I can get some of my shopping done, while the car updates it's software.
      Have you ever sat in the car during the update? Crazy stuff happens as each of the sub-systems are updated and reinitialized. I was like, "Wow, so this goes on in my garage and I never knew it..."

    • @SirHackaL0t.
      @SirHackaL0t. 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TeslaDo_d Yeah, not being able to access a login screen is a pain which is why I tether my car to my phone.
      I often sit in the car and watch the upgrade process. I love how it tells you to not drive whilst the update is in process despite it being in control of when you can drive it.
