Apparently, Todd Haynes, the director of Carol and recent May December (among other things), is developing a mini series adaptation of The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters. No cast and no deadlines yet, plus he has another project in the works, so I'm not sure when or if this comes out. But I hope it does, because I think Todd Haynes and Sarah Waters is a good combo.
Thank you for that extensive list! Will try to watch the ones with Andrew Scott, one of my favourite actors. I also heard that "Small Things Like These" is made into a film starring Cillian Murphy and Emily Watson. Happy New Year, Jen! 🌟
My friend worked in the art department for Poor Things, and only just connected up his job with the book you love and talk about once the trailer came out. Not got round to reading it but going to watch it in the cinema this week to see his film credit ❤
I am most excited about Ripley, A Gentleman in Moscow, and The Vanishing Half - the film for Passing (starring Tessa Thompson) was actually quite good if you enjoy Nella Larsen's work. Thank you for putting this together!
I love these lists!! Going to see all of us strangers in 2 weeks 😊 The outrun and exciting times are also on the same list for me but would be good to watch. Can't wait for Queenie! I've had leave the world behind on my tbr for so long. Currently reading Washington Black by Esi Edugyan and this is in post-production as a TV series, which I'll be very keen to watch (even though I'm sure it'll be a tough one 😢)
I’m reading Penance right now and loving it, had no idea an adaptation is in the works! I saw the Boy Parts play last month and thought it was fantastic, I know the run has finished but definitely recommend if it ever comes back. Thanks for the vid, I’m a bigger reader than film watcher but my boyfriend is the other way around so this is a nice blend of our interests for future discussion 😅
Mrs, March reminded me so much of that episode of Mad Men where Don has a fever & starts hallucinating...so of course it's Elizabeth Moss that's adapting it. Didn't love the book but I think it will come across very well on screen.
❤📚 This was great. Quite a few I'll be watching. My husband and I just finished Fool Me Once. We weren't sure about it in the beginning, but we watched the whole thing and ended up enjoying it.
My friends thought it was too long but I absolutely loved the movie. So visually stunning, so much detail in the sets, wardrobe, etc. that I adored. Haven’t read the book though.
I felt like the cinematographer of Leave the World Behind had way too much fun with all his fancy shots. I also agreed that it was way too on the nose and over the top, I missed the mystery and unknown fear that was present throughout the book. Very proud of myself for reading the book beforehand and so glad I did cuz I definitely preferred the book.
Love this so much!!!! Hey Jen if you could adapt one of your books, which one would you choose first and if so would it be a movie or tv series? Also happy new years 🎉
I've watched enough random videos about Broadway songs to confirm that _The Color Purple_ was adapted to a musical decades ago, and what I have heard from it is powerful, so I'm excited to see that film now that you've brought its release to my attention.
I feel conflicted about The Summer Book adaptation. For me what makes the book great is Tove's writing, it is contemplative and humorous at the same time, I don't know how it can be translated on screen. I'm still curious though.
Watched Poor Things the first day it came out, couple weeks ago. It was a success, my favorite movie of the year! Want to read the book now :) thank you for your hard work this past year, I had a great time reading many books recommended by you! Happy New Year ❤
From what I've heard from people who have read/seen both, the film misses out a lot of the meta layering of the book (which, to be honest, might be difficult to get across in film form), so you're in for an extra treat if you read the book :) Happy new year! x
So excited for the Penance adaptation, whenever it arrives! Thank you for all your wonderful videos this year, Jen - and happy New Year! Wishing you a wonderful 2024 x
Everyone I know whose has seen All Of Us Strangers , has loved it. It’s a film I really want to see. A straight friend went to see it at BFI and cried. Really looking forward to the Ripley adaptation, Mr Loverman, Eileen, … so many. Happy New Year Jen 🍀🥳🎉⭐️🤩🤗💖
I’m so curious to hear about your experience watching Poor Things. I enjoyed it but seems to have a few slight differences form the book which I haven’t read.
I saw Poor Things 2 days ago and am now halfway through the book - Bella Baxter is who I want to be when I grow up. How about 'Erasure' by Percival Everett, called American Fiction as a film? I saw the trailer and it looks awesome.
Excellent video, Jen! I am looking forward to see the adaptation of All the light we cannot see, recently released in Netflix. I enjoyed the book a lot and I hope I will enjoy the series too. Happy New Year, btw! ❤❤❤❤
I've not read Strangers, but I have seen All Of Us Strangers, and from what I've gathered, the film really does just take the bones of the original story and build its own flesh on top of it. Haigh's adaptation does so much more than simply change the gender of a main character, making the romantic connection aspect of the story a queer one, he takes a story about grief, loneliness, and family and explores these themes through an explicitly queer perspective.
I actually read Strangers this week, so will be interested to watch the adaptation at some point and see all the changes ☺ I'll chat about the book in next week's video, if you're interested x
I always root for adaptations to do well, because I like having the visual of an adaptation. I'm excited for Mrs. March, A Gentleman in Moscow, and Animal Farm. I have been waiting for a Wicked adaptation.
Hi Jen. Happy New year. I watched Elena knows .The book was very good the movie was not so good to confusing if u didnt read the book just didnt hit the spot. Love from USA..
I find book adaptations hit or miss, most often misses, though some have been very good. I agree with you on Dune movie pt 1. Actually the SciFi channel adaptations were the best, Alec Newman portrayed Paul Atreides. I'll watch the second part, I want to know what they'll do with it!
I enjoyed the world we left behind even though I felt unsure about the changes and additions. Same with the Netflix adaptation of All the Light We Cannot See. I can be entertained and disappointed at the same time.

@@jenvcampbell The film is visually stunning but otherwise it feels very vapid and objectifying of Bella. A lot of the things that happen (like Bella discovering sex, then escaping with the sleazy guy, and her philosophical education) I could see as being ripe for insight (and so I am interested in seeing how they are portrayed in the book), but the film just sort of... leaves them there? And it's just sort of a feel-good pretty film? With some funny moments? It feels all style, and not only no substance, but by leaving out the substance, it becomes icky. It seems like the film doesn't want to engage too much with the full implications of the main premise of the woman with the baby's brain, and it sort of makes her adventures into a vague allegory for Life instead. Sorry for the long rant haha I've been thinking about this a lot 😅
@@ChaoticBibliophile Thanks for sharing! That's really interesting; I was chatting with Mercedes (fellow booktuber) about it and she had similar feelings, in that the film leaves you feeling really uncomfortable because it doesn't delve deeper. The book definitely does, and it's particularly interesting at the end when Archie's story about Bella is interrupted by Bella herself, who refutes everything he's saying, claims none of the scientific experiments were true, and that Archie simply couldn't bear to write about women as actual people, instead choosing to infantalise them. There's no 'second Bella' in the book, either! x
@@jenvcampbell Uncomfortable is definitely the right word. And I think the film wants to pretend that if you're uncomfortable it's because "oooh the subject matter is shocking," when it's its treatment of it that's the problem. I'm honestly so glad that the book delves deeper! I recently got a copy with the old cover (not movie tie-in), so I'll try to get to it asap. Thanks for sharing, too! You've made me want to pick up the book even more now! (Which btw I found out about because of you, many years ago haha)
