I don't think Tolkien was malicious, but I do think he was misguided. He reminds me of the liberal mindset of, "I don't believe in slaves so I'm not racist" without realizing the internalized biases we have from growing up in a racist society. Much like his adoration of women, he isn't an outward enemy, but his works would be much improved had these things been on his radar to begin with. We all kinda need to take that lesson of despite our intentions, it is good to keep our heads on a swivel, listen to the voices and academics of the cultures involved, and just be open to learning more.
