I ordered some "Dwarf Lilly" seeds from Wish a while back. I figured it was a long shot. I only got a few to germinate and only one plant to make it as an adult plant. The only surviving plant is growing out of a mason jar and it looks a lot like a Brassica (Cabbage/broccoli family). Definitely not a lilly!

Dwarf baby tears seeds grew like crazy and took over the front third of my tank. It's the easiest thing I ever grew, it took 7 days to totally fill in and submerged in 10. I actually wish it grew less since it is such a chore now. Got at Amazon, much easier than using cultures and waiting to fill in a 55 gallon tank, not to mention the cost savings

I bought the 'small leaf' carpeting seeds after witnessing what they'd eventually grew to become, as seen in my lfs display tank:
    Hygrophila sp. 'Tiger'
Hahaha! Now, I have bajillions of this rare plant. Selling a bunch of 3 stems at $8 - I've sold thousands already. And how much did a packet of seeds cost me? Just $2.50! So, does it work? In my case, hell yes! 😂👍

Great video on a topic much needed. I've personally tried my hands on seeds 3-4 times. Twice i got seeds from Ama,zon and they were as you mentioned a bad purchase. They were wrong plants and some were even dead seeds. So in a nutshell, online seeds bad choice!
I did buy seeds from a local aquarium shop a couple of time and they were fantastic (might just be a chance that both the times the seeds gave good results). However as you rightly called out, if you buy seeds for a carpet, the best option is DSM. Also a lot of the variety doesn't hold in soil for long. So essentially, with seeds, it can a good quick uniform carpet but shortlived (max2 months). My experience has been for a longterm carpet, it is better to use IV plants (personally I trust Tropica 1-2-grow).
Looking forward to your seed experiment video :)

his advice: he doesn't know either. My opinion: don't leave good reviews or say something works if you have only had it for 1 month. We're talking, does this plant live as the plant you wanted, in a full of water aquarium for over a year? So far there have been ZERO cases I have ever seen of seeds living that long. Because rarely do aquatic species reproduce through seed, they have other ways of propagating. One plant that does like seeds is hygrophila family. Their baby sprouts also look like glosso for about 1 month, just enough time for a curious buyer to leave a good review and a promising picture. but 8 months later their iwagumi is a jungle of hygrophila.

I’m a trained Plant and Soil scientist and adore topics like this.
For context: A Vegetable seed for the home garden doesn’t magically have high germination rates right out of the seed packet. Farmers and gardeners with expertise in that species have selectively breed that variety for generations to reach the dependability and uniformity of whatever selected crop you are planting. These “aquatic” seeds have none of that selective breeding.
Natures answer is to spread wild germination over successive season to ensure a “seed bank” is present; should disaster kill off one year’s population there are a reminder of seeds to attempt germination next year, and the year after. Nature does not put all its egg in one basket… which is a problem if you want everything to sprout in your tank, at the same time.
Planting by seed will work if:
    1. It is the right species, which also propagates sexually in the wild (you must research each species, and not every species reproduces most effectively by seed even in nature).
    2. You must provide the environment which these seeds would correctly germinate in the wild; see point #1.
    3. Your point of “shelf life” is species dependent and is highly influenced on how that seed is stored. To understand storage, see point #2. A seed that germinates due to rehydration needs to be kept relatively dry to ensure it remains dormant. Likewise, a seed that germinates via light, must be stored in relative darkness. See point #1 about ensuring you have the right species.
    4. Additionally, those seeds are not “improved” meaning they have not been bred through selection for uniform germination, so you will likely have low germination rates. Some species may also require scarification (abrasion to weaken protective seed coats) or stratification (chill hours) if it is a temperate plant to increase germination rates.
Because of how infrequent and relatively new planting aquatic plants by seed is, as a practice. To be successful, you need to have done your homework or have gotten lucky.
This is a great topic and you covered it well. I hope to keep seeing your coverage

I have bought 2 kinds of seeds, one "large leaf" and one "small leaf." The large leaf one ended up melting away and some online sources have stated that the large leaf carpet seeds are actually a swamp plant and therefore semi terrestrial. The small leaf seeds are actually Hygrophilia Polysperma, a highly invasive aquatic stem plant also known as Indian waterweed. It requires little light and little nutrition, but is actually illegal to sell across borders. I'm surprised its not in more lo-tech setups! It makes a great carpet but as your guest said, it grows like crazy and requires trimming every week. But it won't send out runners like a real carpet plant will.
From my understanding, most of these seeds are actually sold in traditional medicine shops as medication, but are resold as aquatic seeds because of their similar appearance to real aquatic plants.

It took some time but eventually they started to grow. I have no idea what they are they look more like weeds than plants. My friend had better luck with his BUT they seem to be all different types of "water weeds". It's was kind of like planting a hand full of bird seed, you have no idea what's going to pop up. The reason they got covered in clear goo is because they were probably chia seeds; a commonly sold 'aquactic' seed. Chia seeds germinate in water very well and look like glosso for a long enough time that the buyer might leave a good review. but alas they turn into 3 ft tall weeds with flowers eventually.

Well, I bought my seeds from China on eBay, they grow fast and tall, remember that aquarium plants need food!!.
To keep planted aquariums healthy and nice looking, some basic plant care measures should be performed regularly. Feeding aquatic plants is the same thing as *fertilizing their environment* with nutrients. Nutrients should be present in both the *substrate* and the *water* to assure the plants are getting the proper amounts.🌿

I got mine in Amazon and this is what I think:
According to the seller they were Wpmlady aquarium plants seeds (small leaf grass)
The first impression is this mucus substance that holds the "seeds" together I guess is the reaction you get form adding the water to it.
It is not, let me capitalize that is NOT small leaf grass, it grows fast, however it is aquatic, got it in the aquarium for more than two months now, I do use Co2 and they get some reddish leafs on the top ones, I wish I could add a photo. Not happy with it, but it does serve as an extra aquarium plant, great for hiding.

I have two tanks going. I started one two months ago:
    nano tank 1 gallon..
    Seachem Flourite Black Clay Gravel
Wpmlady Aquarium Grass Plants Seeds (Small Leaf Grass)
Freshwater Aquarium Live Plants Dwarf Baby tears Seeds Foreground or Carpeting in Planted Fish Tank.
BOTH plants look exactly the same! (amazon purchase)
    Marimo Moss Balls
This tank is clean, water is crystal clear using hang on filter with carbon.
the carpet took off nice started adding water to cover after two weeks about 1cm every other day until 2 inches above plant, then I filled the tank completely. looks awesome. plants are not as green now as they were in the first two weeks, maybe they had access to more co2 out of the water. I'm trying to see how they do w/o co2
    Tank #2 30 gallons 3 weeks ago:
organic soil 1inch, Seachem Onyx Sand 1inch, Seachem Flourite Black Clay Gravel 1-2inches
    same seeds as nano tank
BOTH plants look exactly the same!
I also planted seeds in some 10inch tall (dead) coral rocks. seeds are growing nicely
started with water level up to the lowest substrate..
This one I used a fog/mister using wifi timer on the hour to keep everything moist. This was actually raising the water level nice and slow so I just let it. in about 2 weeks all seeds except those on the rocks were covered and growing nicely.
I now have about 10inches of water in the tank and the water has a slight green tint!
all the plants are doing well so far.
I'm thinking of adding UV sterilizer to clear up the apparent algae bloom...
It's only been 1 week of green water I did add a sponge filter and a skimmer 3 days ago, still green though.
so the carpet looks amazing but, the jury is still out on whether or not the 30 gallon tank is going to make it.
Is the green tint due to plants "melting" or could this really be an algae bloom?

I already tried dry starting seeds. it works. it keeps on growing even on a very low tech tank. the only problem is that they don't root deeply. if you have fish especially bottom feeders, they can easily pull them out on the substrate, every day you'll see them floating. and they adjust or convert a lot depending on the environment. my small leaf now turns into fern-like long leaves.
