A reason i genuinely love this snufkin is how calm he is. He isn't enraged at moomin or anything. He may be upset about his guitar, but keeps in mind that moomin is only angry in that moment and will settle down in time, as well as the fact that moomin seems very young, and little ones seem more prone to breakdowns and tantrums. It makes me wish i had a friend like snufkin.....this snufkin was actually the first legit crush i had on snufkin, and i think yall can understand why.
When Moomin asked Snufkin when he would leave for the southland, Snufkin just replied "What?" But Moonin never asked again. He only said "Nothing," listening to Snufkin's guitar. Moomin seemed to have learned something at that moment, something like Snufkin's deepest and untouchable loneliness, which he should respect if he is a good friend of his.
author's opinion aside, i see a lot of people on here assuming things about something they cant actually understand lol. my japanese isn't great, but i don't think the whole episode is about "i hate snufkin because he wouldn't let me play the guitar." i think whats happening is its around time for snufkin to go south and moomin doesn't understand why he has to go every year, but he cant really communicate his feelings to snufkin so he lashes out and tries to convince himself snufkin is stupid and he doesn't need him anyways. papa talks about snufkin at dinner and moomin has an epiphany, so he goes back to make amends. (why snufkin is still there when its snowing is a mystery to me lol). I feel like this is a really common trope in Japanese media, maybe less so a Scandinavian one lol

Pretty sure his sole reason 'staying during winter' is becuz he had to fix his guitar before he goes on his journey. As he said, he love his guitar and as we seen hes been playing it and act ad his hobby. So if his only hobby got crush, its obvious he would focus in fix it intact 😅. But tbh i think its also a metaphorical as him trying to make up with moomin and how he realise his action might hurt his friend so he tried his best to fix it but only the matter of time for moomin to actually realise by himself that hes in the wrong. I learned to play that song with my guitar when I performed as Snufkin's dad Joxter :) Also this series doesn't quite meet the original colorful universe of Muumit but should be watched and enjoyed with a grain if salt! In 1984 I worked in a burger joint in Accrington. I started work at 5pm, and the Moomins were on at 4.20pm. I loved the theme tune so much I wouldn't leave for work till it had finished.
At least the designs in the 1970 series look a little better than the ‘69 predecessor. Moomintroll is still pretty out of character though, unfortunately, at least in this episode It’s strange, they make Snufkin much more adult-like in this anime, even though Moomin and him are supposed to be fairly close in age.
Seems really out of character for Moomin to break the guitar. It also seems really out of character for Snuffkin to not let him play the guitar, and then giving him the silent treatment.
Apparently what actually happened was moomin wanted to know what memories snufkin has of the guitar because him and the others assumed he had memories of it and that’s why he played guitar but then he wouldn’t tell moomin and moomin got smashed the guitar and later learns about how secrets are personal but stifling apparently says he just likes playing the guitar so he can’t really tell memories he doesn’t have? Anyway apparently moomin was upset because it was getting close to the time when snufkin has to leave and/or was jealous of the presumed friends and memories that he won’t share. They aren’t actually being that rude to each other it’s just a misunderstanding basically. Tho I myself don’t know Japanese this is just what I’ve heard so...

Just read an article from 70’s describing how Tove Jansson hated this version and didn’t allow it to be broadcasted outside Japan. After seeing this I kinda understand her, but without this we probably wouldn’t have the 90’s version either.
I heard it was actually the 1969 version she didn't like (i assume it's because of the amount of guns lol), so they made a different series, a better one
idk what anyone is saying but i tried to understand it anyways. so he tried to befriend the rabbit to replace snufkin, but when the rabbit joined in with the rest of his friends and everyone forgot about him he remembered how nice it was to have a friend that he could just be with on his own, and wouldnt run off with others and forget him. but snufkin keeping his adventures with his guitar to himself was what made him so mad, and he realized thats actually why he liked having snufkin as his friend. he was very moody in this one lol, i like how they drew the moomins though they are very cute
Every human being has his or her own world that he or she does not want to share with anyone. Moomin unintentionally stepped into Snufkin's precious world that he should not have entered. Immediately afterwards, Moomin becomes friends with a rabbit → Later, he understands Snufkin's feelings at that time when his own precious world is trampled upon. Other than that, Moomin's sadness toward Snufkin, who will soon leave, and friendship. It contains many other psychological descriptions, but if you don't understand Japanese, it looks like just a story about a child with a tantrum who goes out of control.
I can't add subtitles here so I'm not gonna translate the whole thing, but I'm gonna translate a little bit for the heck of it. dialogue between moomin and snufkin at 4:18, after moomin puts his hands over snufkin's eyes: Snufkin: Moomin, right? Moomin, disappointed: How'd you know? Snufkin: I just do. You're my friend, Moomin, after all. Moomin: Mm. You're fishing? Snufkin: It's useless. The fish have all headed off to the warm ocean, now. Moomin: Then why are you fishing? Snufkin: Hm... Because I have nothing else to do, I suppose. and then he sees Sniff and runs off. if you missed it because i'm barely translating any of this, the subtext of that conversation was that winter is coming and Snufkin will leave soon. Then there's the bit with sniff and snorkmaiden and little my and snufkin's guitar comes up and theyre like it must have lots of memories, that guitar. the dialogue at 9:24, when snufkin comes back and finds moomin holding his guitar, is as follows after Snufkin silently grabs his guitar from Moomin: Moomin: Snufkin, why do you always carry that guitar around? We were all talking, and we thought that you must have a lot of memories connected to that guitar! Hey, what kind of memories are they? Snufkin: [silently pulls out sticks, saying nothing] Moomin: This STUPID THING! [breaks the guitar] Snufkin: :0 Moomin: I HATE YOU, SNUFKIN! and then he runs out into the night and starts crying. Then we cut to Moominpappa and Moominmamma worrying about Moomin while he cries and snufkin broods by his campfire. Then we get some flashbacks to Snufkin being sweet and the two of them being friends, and then Moomin says "That's wrong. That's wrong!! Snufkin isn't actually like that!!!" Then he sees the rabbit and he's like 'oh we'll be friends now and this will be our secret place where just the two of us play!!!' and he goes home, and moomin isn't all depressed anymore, and he's excited to have a place so secret he won't even tell his dad about it. Then his dad is like oh but you should make up with snufkin before winter bc he's gonna leave soon! and moomin is like i have to leave right now immediately and run's to snufkin's campsite but sees snufkin working to repair the guitar and can't bring himself to say anything. Then snorkmaiden and little my and sniff follow moomin's footprints in the snow to find his secret place with the rabbit. They all start talking about building a hideout there and moomin gets mad and then has a frickin war flashback to breaking Snufkin's guitar because suddenly it dawns on him what an intrusion he was making on him so he dashes off to apologize. Dialogue at 20:23, after Moomin runs back to Snufkin's campsite and finds him strumming his guitar: Moomin: You've fixed the guitar? Snufkin: Yeah, I fixed it. Moomin: I'm sorry, Snufkin. Snufkin: No, I'm the one who should apologize. I grabbed [the guitar] from you without giving a reason or anything. Moomin: No, no, I was also in the wrong. At that time, I really wanted to know why you always carry that guitar, and what kind of secrets you're keeping. But it's okay now! I understand now that your secrets are yours alone to keep. Snufkin: I. just... like the guitar. Moomin, running to sit in front of him: Hey, Snufkin! Play some more! Snufkin: Okay, then. and he plays the guitar and they're back together again. and then: Moomin, almost drowned out by guitar: When are you going south? Snufkin: Hm? As a child i would think snufkin is so cold and distance just like how moomin reacted. They were supposedly 'best' friends where alot of stories to be told and alot of secrets to reveal but as an adult me re watch this, i started to see that its always important to respect your friend's privacy and their preference. Them have different than yours doesnt mean they couldnt be your friends. This made me reaise alot of things 😊
And snufkin ignored Moomin. He felt sad being treated as if he is not friend. This is the anime for the children, so the feeling is discribed how they will react.

What Moomin did was pretty childish and bad, but I feel that's the point. He's being like a child who is angry and jealous at their best friend for going away and having who knows how many fun memories and other friends that Moomin himself can't know or be a part of, and that hurts. And he knows Snufkin will leave again soon and go back to those things Moomin can't experience with him and he doesn't know how to deal with that and so he lashes out by destroying the guitar that represents the things Moomin will never be able to be a part of with Snufkin. But I think the end really shows how he accepts that even if it hurts. And knowing that Snufkin will always be there for the better part of the year and playing his guitar, Moomin really is a part of his life that is important, and I think Moomin realizes that after everything.

Anyway apparently moomin was upset because it was getting close to the time when snufkin has to leave and/or was jealous of the presumed friends and memories that he won’t share. They aren’t actually being that rude to each other it’s just a misunderstanding basically.

Just read an article from 70’s describing how Tove Jansson hated this version and didn’t allow it to be broadcasted outside Japan. After seeing this I kinda understand her, but without this we probably wouldn’t have the 90’s version either.

idk what anyone is saying but i tried to understand it anyways. so he tried to befriend the rabbit to replace snufkin, but when the rabbit joined in with the rest of his friends and everyone forgot about him he remembered how nice it was to have a friend that he could just be with on his own, and wouldnt run off with others and forget him. but snufkin keeping his adventures with his guitar to himself was what made him so mad, and he realized thats actually why he liked having snufkin as his friend. he was very moody in this one lol, i like how they drew the moomins though they are very cute

This is interesting serie and very different than 1991 year Moomin :)
Every human being has his or her own world that he or she does not want to share with anyone. Moomin unintentionally stepped into Snufkin's precious world that he should not have entered. Immediately afterwards, Moomin becomes friends with a rabbit → Later, he understands Snufkin's feelings at that time when his own precious world is trampled upon. Other than that, Moomin's sadness toward Snufkin, who will soon leave, and friendship. It contains many other psychological descriptions, but if you don't understand Japanese, it looks like just a story about a child with a tantrum who goes out of control.

I can't add subtitles here so I'm not gonna translate the whole thing, but I'm gonna translate a little bit for the heck of it.
dialogue between moomin and snufkin at 4:18, after moomin puts his hands over snufkin's eyes:
Snufkin: Moomin, right?
Moomin, disappointed: How'd you know?
Snufkin: I just do. You're my friend, Moomin, after all.
Moomin: Mm. You're fishing?
Snufkin: It's useless. The fish have all headed off to the warm ocean, now.
Moomin: Then why are you fishing?
Snufkin: Hm... Because I have nothing else to do, I suppose.
and then he sees Sniff and runs off. if you missed it because i'm barely translating any of this, the subtext of that conversation was that winter is coming and Snufkin will leave soon. Then there's the bit with sniff and snorkmaiden and little my and snufkin's guitar comes up and theyre like it must have lots of memories, that guitar.
the dialogue at 9:24, when snufkin comes back and finds moomin holding his guitar, is as follows after Snufkin silently grabs his guitar from Moomin:
Moomin: Snufkin, why do you always carry that guitar around? We were all talking, and we thought that you must have a lot of memories connected to that guitar! Hey, what kind of memories are they?
Snufkin: [silently pulls out sticks, saying nothing]
Moomin: This STUPID THING! [breaks the guitar]
Snufkin: :0
Moomin: I HATE YOU, SNUFKIN!
and then he runs out into the night and starts crying. Then we cut to Moominpappa and Moominmamma worrying about Moomin while he cries and snufkin broods by his campfire. Then we get some flashbacks to Snufkin being sweet and the two of them being friends, and then Moomin says "That's wrong. That's wrong!! Snufkin isn't actually like that!!!"
Then he sees the rabbit and he's like 'oh we'll be friends now and this will be our secret place where just the two of us play!!!' and he goes home, and moomin isn't all depressed anymore, and he's excited to have a place so secret he won't even tell his dad about it. Then his dad is like oh but you should make up with snufkin before winter bc he's gonna leave soon! and moomin is like i have to leave right now immediately and run's to snufkin's campsite but sees snufkin working to repair the guitar and can't bring himself to say anything.
Then snorkmaiden and little my and sniff follow moomin's footprints in the snow to find his secret place with the rabbit. They all start talking about building a hideout there and moomin gets mad and then has a frickin war flashback to breaking Snufkin's guitar because suddenly it dawns on him what an intrusion he was making on him so he dashes off to apologize.
Dialogue at 20:23, after Moomin runs back to Snufkin's campsite and finds him strumming his guitar:
Moomin: You've fixed the guitar?
Snufkin: Yeah, I fixed it.
Moomin: I'm sorry, Snufkin.
Snufkin: No, I'm the one who should apologize. I grabbed [the guitar] from you without giving a reason or anything.
Moomin: No, no, I was also in the wrong. At that time, I really wanted to know why you always carry that guitar, and what kind of secrets you're keeping. But it's okay now! I understand now that your secrets are yours alone to keep.
Snufkin: I. just... like the guitar.
Moomin, running to sit in front of him: Hey, Snufkin! Play some more!
Snufkin: Okay, then.
and he plays the guitar and they're back together again. and then:
Moomin, almost drowned out by guitar: When are you going south?
Snufkin: Hm?
Moomin: Oh, no, it's nothing.
and they all lived happily ever after. I did this instead of sleeping. Good night.

Actualky, this is closer to the books than the 90s version
As a child i would think snufkin is so cold and distance just like how moomin reacted. They were supposedly 'best' friends where alot of stories to be told and alot of secrets to reveal but as an adult me re watch this, i started to see that its always important to respect your friend's privacy and their preference. Them have different than yours doesnt mean they couldnt be your friends. This made me reaise alot of things 😊
and.. why did Moomin break the guitar? because Snufkin wouldn't let him play it? that's a really, really dumb reason.

What Moomin did was pretty childish and bad, but I feel that's the point. He's being like a child who is angry and jealous at their best friend for going away and having who knows how many fun memories and other friends that Moomin himself can't know or be a part of, and that hurts. And he knows Snufkin will leave again soon and go back to those things Moomin can't experience with him and he doesn't know how to deal with that and so he lashes out by destroying the guitar that represents the things Moomin will never be able to be a part of with Snufkin. But I think the end really shows how he accepts that even if it hurts. And knowing that Snufkin will always be there for the better part of the year and playing his guitar, Moomin really is a part of his life that is important, and I think Moomin realizes that after everything.
