    This one seems like a good study Bible, and I've been wanting to get one of these myself. Nice to see they are back in stock again, these have been hard to find since they came out 3 years ago. We are a bit spoiled in the Protestant world compared to our Catholic brothers and sisters when it comes to study Bibles.

    I am just getting into reading scripture and I am catholic but I jumped in with both feet! I have several translations and I am using the Great Adventure Bible I love it I also have the Jerusalem Bible what stands out is the language I have noticed at of bibles with language that is today so to speak and while yes it is easy to understand I feel it robs the reader of the beautiful scripture language

    Thank you for reviewing this bible and other Catholic bibles. It means a lot to me that you do that. The Great Adventure Bible is one of my favorite bibles. I think it's a very good and helpful bible, and it really helps you get the big picture of salvation history. Right now, it's my study bible, and listening to the Bible in a Year podcast really complements this bible's offerings. (Ps. How many times can i use the word BIBLE in a short comment, lol.)

    Got the first printed batch last January. Been loving it so far. It really is actually good. The translation and the system they had in place. They really did good integrating the Great Adventure Bible Timeline through the entire Bible. Identifying the narrative books, supplemental books. You can read straight through the narrative books first to get the feel of the whole salvation history. The supplemental books are the prophets, other writings which can be read chronologically even though separate from the narrative books. You will know what I mean. In short, you will fall inlove with it once you get started.

    This page on the left, 4:05 - and how the colors map to the corresponding books, and the order of the supplemental books - is one of the most unique aspects to this Bible. I feel this was glossed over/missed a bit. They mapped out the entire Bible chronologically, and that chart is the key.

    I bought the large print edition of this bible (hard back, not leather) for my wife. Some of the details you glossed over was: 1) the color code differentiates the bible into 12 periods of salvation history. This color coding scheme associates books that were written in the same period (e.g. Isaiah with 1 & 2 Kings) This helps orient a new bible reader as they read through the scripture. 2) The bible emphasized 70 key events in salvation history so important points don't get lost on the reader. My wife also uses it in "The Bible in a Year" prodcast with Fr. Mike Schmidt. The 2CE edition removes any remnants of the Elisabethan English found in the original RSV. The large font of the large print edition, along with the white background allows for easy reading by older eyes. This is my favorite large print bible. This is an excellent bible for those that are not familiar with the bible. Not too many notes to distract the reader as they become more familiar with scripture.

    Thank you for mentioning the spine is sewn. You are the first reviewer I have seen to mention that. I was afraid it was nothing but a glorified paper back, paste down liner and glued spine, but you reassured me. Thank you. Great review by the way, very thorough. Thank you.

    Hello! I received my Bible today and I am very happy with it. One of my biggest concerns was the binding issue many people have written about. I took my chances and ordered it anyway and I am not disappointed at all! The binding is now sewn. I cannot see any glue residue at all and the page packets are clearly visible. I am confident the pages on my Bible will stay put for a very long time. I’m so glad I did not wait any longer to order it.

    Great presentation. This bible aesthetically is very pleasing to the eye. It seems like it would draw the reader in, affording opportunity to get below the surface of the text. I believe the greatest benefit would the "aha" moments created by the notes. When you think you know the story but take time to read the introductory information and then read the information from Dr. Cavins there would be real growth in understanding the scriptures in a new way. I am planning on purchasing one for my wife and I to use. Thanks Tim for the great review.

    As a mom, and Catholic that has fallen away before, and especially during Covid, I thank you as I found your channel during the 12 days of Christmas, and I have moved into doing Bible in a year. I am using the Great Adventure Bible, and thank God every day for Father Mike's helping me through with understanding especially Leviticus. My only issue with this Bible is I wish it was a smaller size, yet I also purchased a DR that arrived the same day. It is the size I like, but I like the Great Adventure as it is an easier read, and of course corresponds with Father Mike. I might adventure out if I make it thru this year. ESV was a close challenge. Also hoping to become a better Catholic as far as attending Mass, but that is a different challenge. Also I began homeschooling our teens during Covid. My younger son and I are studying World History. I have learned I am a very visual person and LOVE to compare the timeline in this Bible vs what we are studying in WH. Anyway, thank you. Your channel has brought me to where I am today, and hopefully continue. I love your optimism and spirit towards others. Also, I would like at least three ribbons as I am to do three readings a day. Any suggestions?

    Curious. In Psalms, why are the numbers like that? For example, Chapter 146 is written as "146 [145]". Was anything omitted?

    • @timwildsmith

      I believe that’s because the number that they were ordered in the Septuagint was slightly different.

    This is strange, I got this bible a week ago in the mail from ascension. My bible was printed in China. I could see your publisher page is different compared to mine.
    Edit: So I’m assuming since it got popular they moved printing outside the US to help with demand.

    • @timwildsmith
      @timwildsmith  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hmmm... mine is from the last run, so perhaps they changed printers.

    • @Curegirl80rs
      @Curegirl80rs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They changed printers due to quality issues. The original printer issued glued bibles and not sewn and bound. Many people had trouble with pages falling out because of this issue. I was hesitant to order one because of this. However, I bought one late last year and it was sewn and bound. It is very good quality and I am so happy I decide to order it.

      @@timwildsmith a couple of notable changes are Isaiah 7:14, where "young woman" is replaced with "virgin", and Luke 1:28, where "favored one" is replaced with "full of grace". "Only" also becomes "only-begotten" in several key passages in St. John's Gospel.

    • @richardvoogd705
      @richardvoogd705 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @NnifWald I have read elsewhere that the RSV's use of the expression "young woman" instead of "virgin" in Isaiah 7:14 caused some concern when the RSV was first published. My understanding is that in many places there is (was?) cultural expectation of marriage first, babies later, making the distinction largely irrelevant - Mary was the right person in the right place at the right time.

Using the rsv2ce from this Great Adventure Bible together with tanakh, the lxx and my nestle aland is a good choice in writing my exegesis, because the tools here are helpful for my writing also. This has some nice features, but I think I like the Catholic children's Bible better. I think the Great Adventure is for children who are a bit older as well as youth, not to mention it comes off like a Catholic take or knock-off on what, I suppose, must now be called the other Adventure Bible. I've already experienced a search engine mix-up.

    Thanks Tim, great review. I’m not Catholic, but grew up in the Episcopal church, which is somewhat similar. Are you familiar with the studies the site offers? I am interested in learning more about the Catholic faith so I can understand why there are those that say Catholics are not Christian’s, and others that do. I’ve always been confused about this. The Episcopal church has some of the same rituals as the Catholics, but has never been questioned on the issue if you are a Christian. I know that this could be a controversy issue, but I have always been curious. Growing up I really felt like I was missing something in the Episcopal Church. I do not think I ever understood one sermon, even as a young adult. Once I started going to a Evangelical Church, I was totally shocked on how much I have learned. For example, in the Episcopal Church I never heard the word Rapture. When I questioned a family member, they said they had never read anything in the Bible about the Rapture, and had never heard the term. Anyway, I would sure appreciate your guidance on how I find out the differences and how Catholic’s and Episcopalian’s became to practice the rituals that they do, and the difference in teaching. The question as to why some say that Catholics are not Christians is something I would really like to learn more about. I did not check your blog. I sure hope I do not get blasted for asking these questions. I just want to learn the truth, and maybe this is one of those issues that only God has the answer to. Thanks for sharing!💟

    • @timwildsmith
      @timwildsmith  3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Thanks, Laura... I sometimes heard that sentiment that "Catholics aren't Christians" when I was growing up, and I think that comes from some unfortunate stereotypes. I certainly can't speak for everyone, but I have many family members and close friends who are Catholic, and they are some of the most incredible people who love God and love people with great depth.

    • @chris12780
      @chris12780 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Can I share, Ms. Laura and Mr. Wildsmith, if you don't mind? I don't mean butting in your conversation. I just want to ask for permission first before joining in the conversation.
      I can speak for my fellow catholics. If you are interested to know about the catholic faith. Yes having this bible would help but it is not everything. It would hard to self study because if I will give you resources to look at, you will have questions along the way. My suggestion. It's good gathering resources first, like the great adventure bible, if you have time try getting a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Because when you read those books, there are references there that will point you where in the Bible to read. Jot down your questions as you read and study. Just read through first. Don't do a full study just yet because it will be hard. Read through the two books along side the Bible. Jot down all the questions. Once you are done, if you have a catholic church near you, then try approaching the parish priest assigned there. I am sure they will be very accommodating. Just tell the priest first, you are interested to learn first. And then ask those questions.

      @2lpitzers have you checked out The Bible in a Year podcast? It goes through the Bible and how Catholic teachings tie in at a beginner level. Jan 1 they are starting a Catechism in a Year companion to it that will walk through all of Catholic teaching and connect it to scripture.
      Better to hear from the Catholic doctrine source itself then word of mouth.
