To be catholic Requires that I adopt an artificial division between the OT and NT in which the NT takes interpretive priority and overrides the meaning of the OT at key, prophetic texts. Requires I abandon a Standard, consistent historical grammatical hermeneutics and adopt a Christo-typological interpretation of the Bible. I have to overlook the profound impact Greek Philosophy and allegory had upon Augustine's views of the Bible. I have to ignore the historical reality that premillenism was believed by and taught by the early church up and until Augustine made it unpopular with the publication of his "City of God. Requires that I ignore all grammatical indicators that clearly distinguish between the Jewish people and the nation of Israel and the NT church. I have to believe promises made directly to Jewish Israel of a future salvation and restoration is fulfilled entirely in the NT church. The NT church is the same as the OT "Israel". I have to understand Revelation 20 to be a recapitulation that takes me back to to the beginning of the church age rather than than following naturally and chronologically from the events in Revelation 19. The RCC's view of the church is completely at odds with the NT. It is the Scripture, and it alone, that is the guide for all Christians. The church on earth must submit to the Scriptures. In addition , the idea that the RCC is the church that Christ setup, and that all believers must submit to it, is also rejected in the Scriptures in the strongest possible manner. The RCC bears no resemblance to the church which is portrayed in the NT. Their view is only obtainable if one approaches the Scriptures with such rigid theological misconceptions that they must “mis-interpret” these verses to conform it to their own theological system. Ong, If you are absolutely commit yourself to the LITERAL, GRAMMATICAL, HISTORICAL HERMENEUTIC you will be able to understand the "Full Counsel of God" and come to the conclusion the church is not the RCC. KEY POINT: Literal, grammatical, historical hermeneutic is the same approach used in ordinary communication. In fact American jurisprudence rests upon this interpretive approach. The dictionary defines literal interpretation that is "based on the actual words in their ordinary meaning...not beyond the facts. In addition, it should be noted in passing that literal interpretation has been unfairly criticised on the basis that it adheres to a wooden, inflexible literalism that fails to allow for types, symbols, figures of speech and genre distinctions. Literalism does not preclude or exclude correct understanding of types, illustrations, apocalypses, and other genres within the basic framework of literal interpretation. It is not too difficult to account for the widespread approval of the spiritualizing or allegorizing method adopted by many conservative theologians as well as liberal and ROMAN CATHOLIC expositors. Fundamentally its charm lies in its flexibility. The interpreter can change the literal and grammatical sense of Scripture to make it coincide with it own system of interpretation. Shalom

Not that there isn’t problems in every denomination and every branch of the church, but we can get into that fun topic of conversation at a later time. Thanks for the video - although I studied some of the deuterocanonichal books in college, I don't remember much about them. I've read the whole Protestant Bible, but I would be really interested in reading the additional books in the Catholic Bible (I'm making great pains not to say that one is correct or incorrect).

@Yusuf Ahmed Nice to quote from the Quran but exactly in which temples did Jesus preach? Which law did He fulfill? And how is it His chosen disciples were all Jewish? Now I am not Jewish but I am a follower of Jesus Christ.
@Yusuf Ahmed Do not worry. It's only men that deal with religion. People get caught up in Jew or non-jew. Look at the people who had a relationship before Jacob. Adam, Abel, Seth, Enoch, Noah, Shem, Japheth, Abraham, Ishmael, and Isaac. It wasn't until Jacob came along and name was changed to Israel. Does that change the previous people's relationship with God? So whether a person is born a Jew or converts to Judaism has nothing to do with it. Muslims say Abraham offered Ishmael the Jews say Isaac. The point being God didn't stop the knife from His own Son. In the beginning God made clothes for Adam and Eve. He did this by a sacrifice of His creation. ( The Bible just says animal skin). The point being that mankind needed a sacrifice. The Jews just use the Old Testament. The Muslim the Quran. The Christian uses the Old Testament and the New Testament. Although I am not familiar with the Quran I did look something up: “He formed you and perfected your forms and provided you with good things. That is Allah, your Lord; then blessed is Allah, Lord of the worlds.” (Al Qur’an 40:64) The question is always asked, Why did God create? Although God doesn't need a house, was it a place to dwell?
@Yusuf Ahmed Monotheistic temple? Well brother this is part of your lack of understanding. Muslims, Jews, and Christian all are Monotheistic religions. Here is the hypocrisy. Ask any single Muslim or Jew and they will say they are one person. Ask what happens after they die they both are buried and both go to heaven. What you are claiming is that Christians say there are 3 God's. This is false teaching. Just like you are not 2 people. Allah gave Moses the Torah but men changed it? Then are you saying God is weak? He cannot protect His words? The problem is you run into some disturbing truths in the Bible. So are you saying just the Torah what Moses wrote? What about what the prophets writings? Are they corrupt also? It's neither all or nothing. Muhammad didn't write the Quran. He couldn't read or write so how sure of you of its accuracy? Muhammad could have said one thing but others wrote something else down. You will say this is not possible because God will protect His words. The same argument that I gave with the Torah.

I have no desire to trap him, or try to win arguments, he’s a smart dude. He knows and loves the Lord. I would love for him to know the real intimacy of the Lord in the Eucharist. I know that in Heaven he will be kicking himself. But I know that I’ll be kicking myself too when I see how faulty my trust in that same Lord was too.
If I remember correctly, according to Alister McGrath's "In the Beginning", early English printers of the King James Bible dropped the Apocrypha (those 7 extra books) as a money saving effort. @Pretty Savage 1.) According to traditional calendars (hebrew) Sunday is the first day of the week. But now, according to international organization for standardization, Sunday is the 7th day of the week. 2.) I know few information regarding the pope's title but the word "father" was never forbidden by god, the verse meant that no one on earth should have the title of being a god or someone being worshipped as god(remember that context is important). 3.) The rosary is literally about the 15 mysteries (events of jesus' life). Over time 15 mysteries were retained and combined with the hail marys for each one of the mysteries. I also recommend reading the "Cathecism of the Catholic Church" as it holds answers regarding the catholic theology. 🙏
As a Catholic, I wouldn’t want to say we are the one true but I would rather say that we are the FULLNESS OF FAITH. Given that everything that we practice and believe was taught and passed down to us by Christ himself during his ministry here on earth. As just a Christian, however, I believe that we are called to convict rather than go condemn.

One small thing but of gigantic significance. And another immeasurable significance is that the Dutercannocials were referenced from and quoted by Jesus & the Divinely Inspired apostles so the Dutercannocials are required in order to understand some of the OT references made by Jesus and the NT writers. These Books are God Inspired.

Thank you for the video, Father! I appreciate it that you were even handed, especially when it came to talking about the Eastern Churches; I hope that the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox, and Oriental Orthodox Churches can heal from the various schism that have driven us apart. The first steps toward that will be putting aside pride and arrogance and recognizing that we have different traditions and interpretations, but that we have far more in common with each other than differences.
This is a cradle Episcopalian that is the proud owner of The Great Adventure Catholic Bible ( a lot of us read Catholic Bibles and quote them from the pulpit). This is the best explanation I have ever heard. Thanks!

Nice! I'm very glad you uploaded this, I have a non-denominational friend who seems to think that the Catholic church doesn't know what the bible actually says. She takes her heavily modified English bible and uses it to try and explain away Catholic teachings. Of course there's no concept for her of the Magisterium having the authority to interpret scripture and teach about it, I don't know where she's getting her "facts" from but she's keen on taking some parts of scripture literalistically while completely ignoring things that oppose her view.
Just an observation: Catholics, Lutherans, Anglican - most of the bigger denominations require their priests/pastors to study theology which includes learning Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. Reading the original texts, considering history... and I don't mean reading the Bible as literal history...who are able to compare different translations and will tell you what to take into consideration. And then you have non-denominational people who haven't learned the old languages and who will tell you that you can only use translation X because this translation is the word of God. For me - considering that I can't read the original text - reading different translations is an option.
@@estebanblanco2001 As long as you accept that it is an interpretation, even those literalists should admit that they are interpreting the text, without looking into the history of the text. Whenever you read a text, you are always interpreting it. Personally, as a history major, I found the history of how Judaism and later Christianity developed much more fascinating than just reading the Bible as a history textbook (which it isn't). I can highly recommend looking into the Jewish writings for the Tanach (Jewish Bible/Old Testament) if you really wanted to learn how the text was intended. And by the way: Jesus is the Word of God, not the Bible. And reading the Bible with help of the Holy Spirit doesn't actually answer which version to use. Do you want all the books of the Orthodox Bible or the Catholic or the Protestant one? Do you read the texts in Hebrew/Aramaic/Greek, Latin or do you want a modern translation? Which translation do you use? Does the Holy Spirit that influences you, only allow your reading of the Bible and supports only your worldview? The texts in the Bible are extremely diverse and they don't always have the same message and in the Jewish tradition is one of discussing and arguing with and about the text. It's a pity that among Christians discussion and pluralism of opinion and biblical scholarship are often seen as a bad thing. I'd love to see a Rabbi, a Catholic priest, and different Orthodox priests and Protestant pastors, discuss their different readings of parts of scripture.
Jerome, the originally ordain translator of the Bible literally noted that the extra books of the catholic Bible were not Canon. It wasnt until the council of Trent that those books were added. Athelanasius even said books like tobit and judith are not canon. Specifically. The man you cite openly said not to include those books in the canon. Finally, neither Jesus nor the other Jews make mention of those other texts as canon. Meaning in addition to Luther being mistaken, Jesus would have been as well in that line of reasoning.
"Jerome, the originally ordain translator of the Bible literally noted that the extra books of the catholic Bible were not Canon." Jerome did initially write this. He later completely rescinded it after the Councils of Rome and Carthage. He said he completely accepted the authority these councils came to. "Athelanasius even said books like tobit and judith are not canon." *Athanasius also said Esther was non-canonical and included Baruch and the longer version of Jeremiah as part of the canon. "Finally, neither Jesus nor the other Jews make mention of those other texts as canon. Meaning in addition to Luther being mistaken, Jesus would have been as well in that line of reasoning." Yes they do, Paul quite frequently quotes from them a lot. But to play Devil's advocate if Jesus never mentions them, he also never mentions: Judges Ruth Ezra Esther Ecclesiates Song of Solomon Lamentations Obadiah Zephaniah
@@Cklert the point about Athanasius is that you can’t just say that the Roman Catholic canon was some clear choice for centuries when it was absolutely not. Athanasius doesn’t need to have the Protestant canon to prove my point. The point is that a debate was present for a very very long time. And the apocrypha was always up at the top of the most debated books. That is, at the very least, undeniable. The fact that many weren’t sure is probably why the Appcrypha was included in many Bible but with annotations specifically calling those books deutero canonical or apocryphal.
I am an American Episcopalian, so we adhere to the Anglican Tradition. We include the Apocryphal books in our Canon, but do not consider them inspired to the same level as the 66 books that most Protestants adhere to. We do think of them as important commentary.

Not trying to start a flame war or anything, but one of those 7 books is where the doctrine of Purgatory comes from. Purgatory being a form of afterlife, and Jesus being the only one in all of Scripture to teach what the afterlife is like and who goes where, why didn't He include Purgatory in His gospel teachings?
I wonder why Jesus wastes words by saying that Sin against the Holy Spirit cannot be forgiven in this life or the next. The difficulty faced here is that one believes that all that Jesus taught is only contained in Scripture and yet St John tells us that not everything Jesus taught is contained in the books written. He left this with the church he established to hand down. Also, if Jesus quoted from the Septuagint, and purgatory was a teaching in it, why is it that we do not have a definitive statement from Jesus in scripture saying there is no such thing. This would suggest it was not needing such clarification.
@Karen Stead Why many Protestants believe that the papacy is the anti-Christ. Any Church worth the truth understands that the Jewish faith laid the groundwork for the Christian faith. Christians attempting to divorce from the Jewish faith is akin to Adam divorcing Eve?
I saw on a video recently that the early Protestant bibles relied on a translation in Greek from the Latin by Erasmus (a contemporary humanist and biblical scholar who flirted with the reformers but ultimately remained a Catholic). And so the eventual work was based on a translation into German from the Greek translated from the Latin by Erasmus and then of course originally from the Greek by early Christians. I don't know if this is entirely true or not but the speaker was a biblical scholar. However if true it would tend to contradict the idea that the early Protestant works came from original Greek as opposed to a relatively modern (16th century) Greek translation which was in turn translated from the Latin. This of course would refer only to the new Testament as the old Testament sources you have already explained in your video. It would be interesting in a future video to contrast / compare the sources of both Catholic and Protestant bibles in total. Both old and new Testaments. And then of course later with the King James bible as compared to earlier Lutheran/Calvinist bibles.
Fr Casey please can you do a video of explaining nicene creed or apostle creed in detail. ie origin, meaning, where it comes from in the Bible / scripture etc (hope this makes sense) and love your channel and have been watching for over a year now! 🙏🏼🙌🏼 God bless!
The East actually do have reformations it's just that it's not as wide spread as in the west. Reformations in the east are more localised and occur usually within just one particular church rather than the whole of the orthodox Church and plus with the already small population of the orthodox churches these reformed churches are relatively even smaller and are thus unknown and overshadowed by the big reformed churches of the west. One example is the reformed Church known as true orthodoxy which was the result of the reformation of the Russian orthodox Church particularly and not as a Reformation of the orthodox Church as a whole hence its localisation and unknown popularity
The grass isn't greener on the other side. The East doesn't just have the Eastern orthodox but also the oriental orthodox. Both are not in communion due to conflicting theologies. Also, a schism happened between Constantinople and Moscow patriarchates.
@@kaneki_ryuzaki3249 true but if we're going to talk about the Oriental Orthodox Churches the schism occurred particularly not just with the east but the west simultaneously also as this schism occurred in the 5th century between the miaphysite Christians (now oriental orthodox) and the chalcedonian Christians (now eastern orthodox and western Catholic) and not just exclusively with the east as during that time there was no east or west but rather just the chalcedonian Christians Further more prior to this there was another schism about 20 years earlier during the counsil of ephesus between the Persian Christians (now churches of the East not to be confused with Eastern Orthodox) and the then pentarchy(now the miaphysite Christians (oriental orthodox) and the chalcedonian Christians (now eastern orthodox and western Catholic) Briefly to say, here we're talking about the reformations that occurred after the east-west split beginning from the 16th century's protestat reformations onwards in the west resulting in the protestat factions and in the east these lesser known somewhat-protestant factions
I think that is because Eastern churches are authonomous to the extend that even the Constantinople patriarch is equal to, let's say, the Bulgarian one (though he likes to think himself above all other, that's not the case). So, lacking a single authority such as the pope there cannot be a full Reformation. Besides, as I can recall Luther considered the possibility to turn the Germans towards Orthodoxy but couldn't because of the problems it had at the moment, I.e. most of the Orthodox world was under Ottoman rule.
Actually the earliest Protestant bibles contained the deutero-canonical books. For example Luther’s German translation contained them and later translations into English also contained them. These books were not removed. They were considered useful but sub-canonical which is the view also held by Jerome who created the Latin Vulgate and the view held by Pope Gregory the Great (died 604AD). The canon as Rome understands it today was not formally defined until the Council of Trent (16th century) and included the deutero-canonical books. This Council declared that anyone who disagreed with them on the canon was accursed by God which I guess included Pope Gregory. Prior to Trent there were differing views within the Roman Church. Some Protestant translations today contain the Deuteronomy-canonical books but solely for their usefulness.
Hi father casey ♥️♥️♥️ could you do an online catholic explanation of the bible in depth. Its a bid ask but would help agnostics like me learn more about catholic christianity
I wish there was a transcript of some of your videos, Father Casey. I'm relatively fresh, and in no rush to engage in apologetics out of fear of misrepresenting the church. However, I often find myself on the defense in the oddest of ways. I was once asked by a man, recently breaking off from his Amish faith what I thought about God, and more recently, a coworker noticed I always take Sundays off. Though not attempting to conduct missionary work, I found myself having to engage in apologetics both times. I'm essentially preparing a small book for the next time this happens, it contains much of the RCIA/OCIA materials, the ship analogy, and bits and pieces dug up (like this video). Anyways, appreciate you and all you do!

@Shelley J Yes, and at one point, the Roman catholic church was selling salvation. Like, depending on how bad your sin was, you could pay a certain amount to have that sin forgiven...madness!! I'm so grateful for Martin Luther and the other men who stood up in defence of the TRUTH! Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to Father except through Him. We do not need to confess our sins to a priest. Jesus is our priest and saviour!
In the southeast US prior to the civil war, there was a version of the bible known as the slave's bible, which was edited down to discourage rebellion. The biggest change was eliminating Exodus to "avoid giving ideas". While I am not a christian, I view this particular version as disgusting and share the Catholic attitude toward this corruption.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9
Seems to me that the argument is too focused on Luther removing the books than why the Masoretes chose to. I'm sure there is alot of ancient tradition there that is being overlooked as well considering how old the Talmud is
As a protestant I appreciate this video. It always bothered me that Protestant clergy don't know the history of their Bible. I still wonder more about how it happened though.
@Gerry Hagen I believe that knowledge with humility can make a difference in a Christian's ministry, according to the Lord's purpose. Every Christian has a unique calling. I have been interested in Christian apologetics for several years now. I have been a Baptized Christian for more than 50 years.
The difference goes back to the days of Martin Luther. Luther decided on his own which books he didn't like and should be removed from the bible. He didn't form a committee, he didn't seek advice from anyone he made the decision and ran with it. During that time he posted his 95 theses on what he thought was wrong with the Catholic Church. He couldn't have predicted the unintended consequence of his actions. Those that broke away became Protestants which is derived from protests and those Protestants took his version of the bible with them. Then King Henry broke off from the Church because he wasn't granted an annulment so he could continue to be a pig and marry another. So he broke away from the church, confiscated what is arguably with billions today, Catholic Church property in the form of cathedrals, church's, abbeys, monasteries and convents killing anyone who would dare defy him and not join the church he created with himself in charge. The King James version of the bible was written in opposition when King James found out that the Douay-Rheims translation was being written. What ever the protestants have is directly derived from the works of Catholic clerics and scribes painstakingly writing by hand with quills one page at a time what we know as the Bible.

the contents of this channel is quite heartwarming yet the swarm of arguments in the comments below. I appreciate polite discussions but the ones when both parties argue irks me. This is why i dont like discussing theology, ugh.
The Catholic Study Bible by Donald Senior is very good for historical scholarship. The Ignatius Study Bible is my favorite for connecting the Bible to Catholic teaching.
When I was going thru RCIA ( Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) to become a Catholic, I was given a copy of the New American Bible, put out by World Catholic Press. It's a more modern english translation, as opposed to the KJV, which makes it easier to read. Every book begins with a historical intro, so the reader gets some background information, and there are copious footnotes on every page that tell the reader what the texts meant in their original languages. The only drawback is that it's in paperback, and the small print can be hard on the eyes after a while.
"Who are we, especially when dealing with sacred scripture, to believe that we know more than our spiritual mothers and fathers that came before us and compiled this incredible book." As a protestant Christian, I only have one spiritual Father. He was the sole inspiration for the Word that I now follow. I'm not following these books just because they've been around for a long time, I follow what is in correlation with God's Word. Catholicism, since it is primarily works based, is contradictory to what God's Word really says.

To be catholic
Requires that I adopt an artificial division between the OT and NT in which the NT takes interpretive priority and overrides the meaning of the OT at key, prophetic texts.

Although I am not familiar with the Quran I did look something up:
“He formed you and perfected your forms and provided you with good things. That is Allah, your Lord; then blessed is Allah, Lord of the worlds.” (Al Qur’an 40:64)
The question is always asked, Why did God create?

Apocrypha means "hidden".
The fact is those seven books were never hidden, they were always known As part of the Septuagint used by Jesus and His Apostles.
The first official Canon decided and decreed by Pope Damasus at the Council of Rome of 382AD included the Septuagint with its 46 books. Today, we still have 46 books in our Old Testament together with the 27 books of the New Testament.

@jeremy Smith. Shifting the 7 books to Apocryphal is diminishing their stature and importance non the less. But thank you for pointing this out.

I was a Anti-Catholic Non-Denominational Protestant for 15 YRS. Now, as a Catechumen, I own the COMPLETE Bible! The Ascension Great Adventure Bible Catholic RSV (& the Word on Fire Gospels). One small thing on the Duterocanon. Much of the original Hebrew for Sirach and Tobit were found at Qumran among the Dead Sea Scrolls.

@@monikabullmer8202 me 2 I’m not a biblical scholar but I appreciate the commentaries and scholarship
You don't need any bunch of scholars/people/whatever to interpret the bible for you. You need the Holy Spirit and that's it
@@estebanblanco2001 I prefer a more scholarly approach . But u do u
"Jerome, the originally ordain translator of the Bible literally noted that the extra books of the catholic Bible were not Canon."
Jerome did initially write this. He later completely rescinded it after the Councils of Rome and Carthage. He said he completely accepted the authority these councils came to.
"Athelanasius even said books like tobit and judith are not canon."
*Athanasius also said Esther was non-canonical and included Baruch and the longer version of Jeremiah as part of the canon.
"Finally, neither Jesus nor the other Jews make mention of those other texts as canon. Meaning in addition to Luther being mistaken, Jesus would have been as well in that line of reasoning."
Yes they do, Paul quite frequently quotes from them a lot. But to play Devil's advocate if Jesus never mentions them, he also never mentions:
Judges
Ruth
Ezra
Esther
Ecclesiates
Song of Solomon
Lamentations
Obadiah
Zephaniah
@@Cklert whats your source on Jerome, because I have source texts. Where does he rescind?

Can't we all just unite under the word of Jesus Christ? He is our ultimate teacher, leader, rabbi, king, etc.

@Karen Stead Why many Protestants believe that the papacy is the anti-Christ. Any Church worth the truth understands that the Jewish faith laid the groundwork for the Christian faith. Christians attempting to divorce from the Jewish faith is akin to Adam divorcing Eve?
The entire Bible, along with the Apostolic Tradition, is the word of God.
Whoa whoa whoa FATHER I need my pen and paper and slow the speed of the video.
Question: why wasnt there a Reformation in the Eastern Church? Any thoughts? I always felt like it was the lack of legalism in the East.
@@kaneki_ryuzaki3249 true but if we're going to talk about the Oriental Orthodox Churches the schism occurred particularly not just with the east but the west simultaneously also as this schism occurred in the 5th century between the miaphysite Christians (now oriental orthodox) and the chalcedonian Christians (now eastern orthodox and western Catholic) and not just exclusively with the east as during that time there was no east or west but rather just the chalcedonian Christians
Further more prior to this there was another schism about 20 years earlier during the counsil of ephesus between the Persian Christians (now churches of the East not to be confused with Eastern Orthodox) and the then pentarchy(now the miaphysite Christians (oriental orthodox) and the chalcedonian Christians (now eastern orthodox and western Catholic)
Briefly to say, here we're talking about the reformations that occurred after the east-west split beginning from the 16th century's protestat reformations onwards in the west resulting in the protestat factions and in the east these lesser known somewhat-protestant factions
The Eastern Church had been mostly decimated by Islam. I honestly believe their problems were much bigger that their leadership selling indulgences.

I'm so grateful for Martin Luther and the other men who stood up in defence of the TRUTH! Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to Father except through Him. @Gerry Hagen Bless you also brother in Christ.
I love ❤️this and such a great history lesson on on the Catholic Bible. 🛐Im a new subscribers.

Luther didn't removed it , he also added Deuterocanons in his translation
"Who are we, especially when dealing with sacred scripture, to believe that we know more than our spiritual mothers and fathers that came before us and compiled this incredible book." As a protestant Christian, I only have one spiritual Father. He was the sole inspiration for the Word that I now follow. I'm not following these books just because they've been around for a long time, I follow what is in correlation with God's Word. Catholicism, since it is primarily works based, is contradictory to what God's Word really says.
God bless you young brother
