I heard back from Acension and while there are no plans for a different edition of the GAB they are sending me a replacement Bible. So there may be a giveaway in the future, unless I find someone in my personal life could use it more! 😁
I was very impressed with their eagerness to make it right.

Catholic Bible Reviews Hello. If there is a giveaway in the near future, I would be very interested! I’ve read the Bible ( going on my second time using a standard bible by Tyndale “The One Year Bible for Woman.” It does not have the extra books because it’s not a Catholic Bible. I’ve been researching and came across this one. I like everything about it and would love to have the reading/study experience. But, weather a give away or not, this Bible is something i will get for myself In the new year 2021. Thinks for the review. 😊

I too got mine in June 2019 and by 3-4 months of daily use it was coming apart from the back. It took awhile of texting and they sent a replacement. The Bible itself is beautiful and a joy to read and agree attention to craftsmanship to ensure this bible lives on for years to come is a must.

I wasn’t at all happy with the binding when it *arrived* !! It makes a loud crinkly sound every time I open and close it! I think it’s the glue that’s come away from the pasted down inside covers. I also thought it was very pricey too.

Catholic "study bibles" generally provide textual and manuscript notes rather than purely didactic instruction (they don't tell you what to think) as in the MacArthur bible, The Ryrie Study bible and the ESV study bible. Textual criticism (translation of the actual documents) is something you will hear about very frequently. That is the basis of the St. Joseph editions.

I've always wished we could get a Catholic bible of the same caliber as a Cambridge. Something that is built to last for years and doesn't have that gaudy, pretentious looking gold decorative markings on the outside. Sadly, something like that just doesn't seem to exist. Jerusalem Bible came close.

Sending the one I got back today due to damaged binding. Fortunately I bought it on Amazon. I only got it because I bought the idea that it was coordinated with the podcast, which it is not. Originally it was a 3 month narrative study not coordinated with the podcasts. Before returning it, I looked through it. It is very colorful, with some interesting historical asides, but the whole system is a bit of a hard sell with many extra buy ons. I have plenty of Bibles online and in hard copy, including several Catholic versions, including the Jerusalem Bible in French and a couple of Spanish versions. I do really enjoy the podcast and the schedule for the podcasts. I’ll just use the podcasts, print out the schedule, and read the Bible in a year with the Ignatius RSV2-CE. I am glad that this Bible is encouraging to so many Catholics and wish everyone joy and peace in their reading.

Thank you for your review. I found it helpful. It was very good to see how readable the type looks and how attractive the layout. I would also worry about the binding in the long run, because I would want a Bible that I had invested so much TIME in to last a long time. $60 doesn't seem terribly expensive to me, but I would want better spine binding.

  • @juliag5666

If it’s nylon ribbon, you can fuse the ends by passing it (very quickly!) over a candle flame. The poor binding of it, and the page coming away at the front would make me think twice about buying this, which is a shame because the content looks brilliant. It shouldn’t need the glue if it’s sewn binding. Great review though. Thank you. It was really helpful when deciding whether to buy it or not.

If you're looking at this review in 2022, I just purchased this bible and it seems they did do some updates. Mine is a true sewn binding (you can see the little "booklets" that you get when it's a true sewn binding) and the cover was updated as well. The compass is still embossed on the front cover but it is black now. Overall the quality seems really good now with the little update they did.

  • @TickleMeElmo55
    @TickleMeElmo55 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

I ordered one since I like the idea of it and I'm of need of an approachable study bible, but I do think it's overpriced at $60 mainly due to the glued binding. In comparison, take for example Easton Press. Depending on what item you're looking at, a single book can cost $99 for sewn binding plus pages that are acid-neutral. Neither of these characteristics are present in TGAB. We're approximately paying a little less than 2/3rds for a much lower quality item . I'd personally put the TGAB at around $35, at most, based on the actually materials used and how it was put together.

I have this Bible, too. I 100% agree with everything you said, especially about needing more margin space for notes. I have the unpopular opinion of liking notes/footnotes as is found in the NAB. So, if I could smoosh the NAB Study & RSV Great Adventure Bibles together, I'd have my perfect version. 🤣 And I'd add a third ribbon. I'll probably add my own. A little glue and a ribbon. Thanks for your video.

I enjoy pulling out my NABRE for Psalms and whenever I find the RSV reading oddly. My next read-through will be in a NABRE, although I haven't decided which one. With regards to the footnotes, I feel like many people try to take them in the same way they would commentary without distinguishing how they differ in their roles, if that makes sense. I would love to do an "In Defense of the NABRE" video someday!

    • @smokybirch6626
      @smokybirch6626 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@catholicbiblereviews5581 That would be awesome! The NABRE has been so unfairly maligned for so many years. Some of the common criticisms applied more to the original 1970 NAB, while the 1986 New Testament Revision and the 2011 NABRE revision have fixed many of the issues people originally criticized (and even then, the criticisms were so over the top that they were completely out of proportion). The Bible readings in the current Liturgy of the Hours are from the original 1970 NAB (before the revisions). I honestly find them very conducive to prayer and reflection.
The common criticism that the NABRE is "too dynamic" or "too loose" as a translation is demonstrably false. In fact, the 1986 New Testament revision is quite literal. That's why it is so hard to read in places. The translators did not try to smooth out run-on sentences in St. Paul or make the grammar easier to read.
And the footnotes have been repeatedly maligned as "heretical" and "atheistic" despite receiving Church approval and being directly sponsored and managed by the US bishops. As I've delved into Bible study in recent years, I've come to realize just how amazing the NABRE footnotes are. They are an amazing resource for anyone who wants to study the text in-depth and understand what it meant when it was written. They provide more insight and detail than other academic study bibles like the New Oxford Annotated Bible. The US bishops have truly given Catholics an unparalleled resource for learning and understanding the bible.

@@catholicbiblereviews5581 I agree --- the NABRE Psalms are a real gem. I suspect that some readers haven't tried reading them, because of the inclusive language debacle over the 1991 NAB Psalms. But the newly revised NABRE Psalms are extremely well done.

  • @8polyglot

The sewing you showed is common in perfect bound (glued) bindings. I think it's merely to hold the cover to the text block more easily, but the binding appeared only glued/perfect. There were no 'signatures' or small 'booklets' of pages that had been sewn in, but rather all the pages individually appeared glued to the spine. I hope they're not marketing that as a sewn binding because it really doesn't look like it is!

I just received my Great Adventure Bible today. From first glance at the binding, it looks more sewn than glued. The glue is not as prominent as it is in the video. I don't see any glue on the top of the binding. I do see a very small layer of glue on the bottom side of the binding but I could only see it if I held it up to the light. I am not an expert on book bindings by any means, but to me it seems to be more sewn than glued. Hopefully, this new shipment of books is better made? I will let you all know how it holds up after a couple months.
Also for people that are wondering, Ascension is considering on adding different versions of this Bible such as a Children's, Teen's, Wedding, and or a Note-taking version. They are sending out surveys to people on their email list to see what their customers want.

I would suggest writing notes in a journal that is separated with tabs using the different colors. I agree with the expense and it wearing out. I have never heard of a bible with that kind of expense doing that. It should last for years. Hopefully, they will look at correcting this in future editions.

Hello. Thank you for making this video and even though its been a year, I’m hoping you can still help me. 😊 I’ve been googling trying to find a reference as to if The Great Adventure Bible differs from the original Holy Bible. I did notice yours has the words Holy Bible, however, all the references I’ve seen for your Bible has listed it as a Catholic Bible. 🤔 I know we are all Christians but there are differences in what you believe, as a Catholic, and what I believe as non-denominational or simply a Child of God. 😉 Therefore, I’m hoping you can advise me on whether The Great Adventure would be suitable for me studying without getting confused, as a non Catholic. It’s important because, shame on me, I have not read the whole Bible and really need too. 🥸😳 Any advisement would be appreciated. 💁‍♀️📖 Thank you and God Bless you. 🙏🏻🕊✝️

Hey Michael. It is a Holy Bible. Catholics also use the Apocrypha which are books written between the old and New Testament timelines and these books are included. Catholics believe them to be canonical while Protestants don’t. An interesting fact is they were included in the King James Bible for over 200 years. Your reference to “the original Holy Bible” is interesting. I imagine there is an original somewhere but maybe not. The Bible’s we have today are constructed from several source texts which have variances. The sea scrolls, masorectic, Septuagint for OT Scriptures and various Greek manuscripts for the New Testament along with early Latin translations. (Aramaic too?) I believe there are more than these but I’m no scholar. I also believe the earliest complete Bibles were put together by the Roman Catholic Church but prob include the Eastern Orthodox Church as well but I’m not that well schooled. In either case unless you can read Greek and or Latin, forget about the “original” version and thank God we have access to so many fine translations of the Holy Scriptures.
So if maybe your asking is this a trusted translation of the Holy Bible? Absolutely yes. The RSV is very good. Unlike some of the modern transliterations that imho are garbage and figments of man’s imaginations. If you’ve never read through the Bible before I would encourage you to buy this Bible, go through it Dailey with the podcast and read along with Father Mike. It’s 20 minutes a day. After the year, if you never read this particular Bible again it was $60 well spent to go through Gods word. Look at it as an investment into your spiritual training. Your free to listen to the pastors brief thoughts after the reading or not. It is not a “theological Catholic Bible study”. It’s just a few brief words and a prayer from a man who loves Jesus.
It’s been 6 months since your post and I’m curious as to what you did. I’ve encouraged myself to order this Bible. I been going through the Dailey reading with Father Mike but using an ESV. (It’s close enough). But I do miss a day here and there and I want to be more disciplined. ( I used to have a NRSV but that’s long since fell apart.lol )

I understand that printing in color is expensive, but this just doesn't feel like a 60 dollar bible, more like a 40 dollar bible.
What I am most disappointed about though, is that there isn't a premium edition with a top-grain leather binding. It's kind of hypocritical too, as Jeff Cavins himself believes a Bible should have a nice leather binding

Buyer beware: So, the modernist interpretation of Joshua 10:12-14 seems to be starkly in contrast to Sts. Augustine, Ambrose and John Chrysostom. But hey, they are only Doctors of the Church and the theology of the 20 and 22st centuries has been so rock solid. 🤔 this is not the only modernist commentary I've found... just the one I happened to read to today.

Great review. I agree with you entirely. The Great Adventure Bible is overpriced. Also, it's way overrated as a "study bible." The translation (RSV2CE) is great. The format is good, and nice to read for the most part, except for the "red lettering," which I do not like. ("Red lettering" is gimmicky and Protestant-like, and makes it harder to read.). But a glued binding?! Yikes. And it's not really a study bible. There are not many articles. And the annotations are very scant. (The Didache Bible is MUCH MUCH better IMO. Also, Ignatius puts out a quality standard-size bible in RSV2CE, with a sewn binding, which you can purchase on Amazon for about $25.)

Where to begin.... Firstly, I was raised Methodist.....and still “hear” Scripture in KJV language.. Can”t help it.🤗.
Secondly, second editions nearly always use gender neutral language, so I avoid them... My Bibles don’t need to be. PC. I’m intelligent enough to understand the meaning of “man” in context. I have an MAR, and was nice censured for referring to God as He. In an important paper I had written. That left a lasting impression in me, for sure,
You paid too much fir this Bible, considering it’s poor quality. It shoukd, in the furst place lay flat on your table... and the other imperfections happen with much less expensive Bibles... No wonder it is being replaced.
I have been looking at Protestant Bible reviews, and Publishers... Crossways, Cambridge, Oxford, etc....
because I am giving three of my Protestant family members Bibles for Christmas... What I have found has bern mind boggling.
The Catholic Bible publishers need to get off their collective duffs, and improve the quality, and choices of the Bible’s they are producing.
Protestants have CHOICES:, people.,, great choices... They can choose from a myriad of bindings, covers. Types (Journaling, margins, purposes...There are even Bibles with designs to be colored...
It’s really embarrassing. A sixty dollar Bible....in the Protestant world ....would get you something much nicer.
And you would be offered various coverings...from a paperback, to a premium leather., and the binding shoukd be well sewn...The sky, is the limit... set only by your budget.
Good Bibles feel great in yiur hands, they remain flat when opened, they have good paper, Thst reduces bleeding., etc.., And... there is something called Line Matching.... Thus means that from page to page, the lines of print are right in too if each other...so no ghosting .. Wow.
And.. There should be a variety of journaling Bibles..with wide margins...
Thanks for your honest review. I hope your next Adventure Bible is in better shape thsn the first one was... (

As a former Methodist, evangelical, blah, blah, I agree with you. Catholic publishers are far behind. But you must bear in mind that all the Protestant ones were bought out years ago by the big publishing houses and they have big $$ to produce whatever they want to. I cringe when I see Bibles marketed to young girls covered in sequins and unicorns. I live in a city where the three main publishing houses once existed. Yes, this Bible is a bit pricey, I have one and I absolutely love it. And I have had lots of them. I take good care of it too so it doesn’t get damaged. It’s a treasure.
