At 64 I have never disengaged the reel like you did in this video, nor have I ever seen or heard of it. You, sir, are a genious. Talk about old dogs and new tricks.
Lol nature of the Alabama weather. This time last year we were coming out of a period where it barely touched freezing for two months straight, to more usual with it 70º day before yesterday and today barely broke freezing lol. If it's not the weather it's TVA release messing with ya.
you are an american original. love your genuine character and real fishing knowledge. you still have that child like love of the past time unlike so many high intensity you tube fishing channels. always come away remembering what made me love fishing in the first place
Richard, you are the man no doubt. The way you explain how to do it is the epitome of a down home fishing instructor. Kind Sir, we are honored to have you doing these videos. Many thanks and please continue.
Shellcracker fishing is my choice fishing here in the central panhandle of Florida fishing the Choctawhatchee river. We use a technique we call bumping the bottom with earth worms.
The lighter the tackle the more fun the fishing is that's for sure. Love the way you approach your fishing in all conditions and circumstances. Very fun to watch your videos and you are the only one I give a thumbs up before even start watching. Thank you for sharing your experience with us and keep up the good work sir. God bless you. Cheers from Canada.
Ya know , I grew up pan fishing and as I got a little older I discovered big bass fishing in a big way , and I moved pan fishing to a back burner . Now I'm much older (where do the years go ?) , and I started watching your videos and was motivated in a big way to move pan fishing up front again . I didn't quit bassing , but I opened up doors I had closed , like live bait . Thank you , Richard Gene . for these videos you make . Thanks to you , I have become a multi- species fisherman . Don't ever stop . Thank you agian .
Another great video RG. You've got the only fishing channel on TH-cam that I enjoy watching, every single time. You seem like a great guy. Humble, informative, no cocky attitude, just a good un. Keep up the good work, and thanks!
Earthen I think that this video is talking about shell crackers but it is fun to fish for other fish. Now we know u like crappie the other 10 thousand of us that like crappie like perch too. Is that all u like is crappie? It looks like u would get sick of them if that's all u like? I can't tell the differance when red ear is mixed in with the crappie
This man catches them every time, love the little tips his gives without even realizing it, such as needing to retie the knot, light line big fish need to make sure the hook is set for the next fish, you rock Richard
Several things come to mind when I read the comments. First is there is no doubt that Richard loves to fish and loves to give the fish a fighting chance. Second is I like his boat and think that is what I want. Third I wish I had found his channel when I lived in Tuscaloosa, not after I moved to the gulf coast. Fourth thing is if it lives in the water it is fun to catch and good to eat. That includes crab, shrimp, conch, abalone, mussels, squid, octopus, oysters, lobster and most fresh and salt water fish. So why argue over which fish you eat because everyone has their favorite fish. Just enjoy watching Richard fish and learn from him, I do!
There are a ton of fishing videos on TH-cam. But there's only one you must watch & that's Richard Gene The Fishing Machine! He and Elmo ain't just catching fishing, they're showing how to catch fish!
Great videos, I raised up in and around Lake Okeechobee and chased Crappie and Bluegll and Crackers, loved every minute, now at 80 and crippled up I love to watch your films they give me great pleasure you and Elmo keep at it, God bless
I grew up in Tampa fl. using cheap reels and saltwater fishing for big fish. I had to learn to backreel catching big red fish and flounder or those cheap reels wouldn't handle them 😂God bless and thank you for watching!
I love fishing for red ear. You are the first guy I seen that don’t use a weight. That is the way my Daddy taught me. Been doing it for 50 years. I’ve had a lot of guys in the boat laugh at me until they saw the results.
I love fishing for pan fish,,when I was a kid,we would ask the farmers if we could fish,,,my brothers and I would fish all day,,,I miss them days,,thanks for tickling my memories,,,
My goodness there Richard Gene, those were some beautiful shell crackers. And on one pound test line. That little flimpsy rod you were using and leaving the reel in free spool was the answer and of course the most important thing is patience and don't horse em. Great job again my man. Keep em coming!!
Been fishing all my life for Florida to Alaska for every species you can think of but absolutely love panfish... crappie, bluegill, shell craker awesome fun and great to eat too. Fluorocarbon line is the ticket... TY... MH
Thanks for another fantastic video!!! I have fished salt water for 10? years and almost no fresh water, starting to get back to the fresh water now, love to fish for pan fish, this video was one of the best, love the river fishing!!! Thanks again so much for all your effort sharing these adventures with us!!!! w.
I want to thank you sir I lost my love of fishing when my son died in 2006 and a couple weeks ago I ran across one of your videos flathead fishing I have watched a boat load of them since and well I’m breaking out the tackle this weekend and I’m goin fishin thank you May God bless you from Illinois with thanks
Finding, no spookin, and catchin red ears is an art form...for me, they are damned hard to find especially in rivers...I have one place in Arkansas that I more or less consistently catch red ears (Bear Creek)...mostly in spring and early summer, but dead of winter...wow...all I can say is that I would not even attempt it...you are the man Mr. Machine...
Richard you are one of the funniest people I’ve ever watched in my life. I love it when you do intros like that because I really enjoy that kind of humor. You are a very great man and fisherman and also an inspiration to all of us. Thank you Richard for everything you’ve done for us!
We always used to go to guntersville in the middle of may around the full moon and catch them on bed when I was kid . This brought back some good memories. Thank you Richard and Roll Tide
I really enjoy the informative and entertaining shows you put on. Thanks for sharing them and I hope you and Mama Sue enjoyed those shell crackers. Keep em coming my friend.
Good times Richard! I thoroughly enjoy all your videos. A definite highlight to my day when I see you have posted a new one! Those shellcrackers were huge. Compared to any that I have caught here in south eastern Virginia anyway. Hahaha
Mr. Fishing machine, My name is Alex. I am down here in East Texas. I hate to be completely off topic but i would love to see a video of how you maintain your reels, especially restoring those old vintage reels you use. BEST channel on TH-cam. Thank you for what you do sir. God bless
Seriously, I enjoy your fishing show better than any bill dance, or roland martin big production show. You know how to catch fish in every way. And elmo is a hoot. Love ya man.
Thanks to this channel I just purchased a boat!Went out today last minute and caught nothing but I forgot how much I missed relaxing on the water.Weather has been crazy but I'm ready for when it gets right!
A shellcracker is the best fighter in freshwater. What a tremendous species! I catch some true pigs here on Lake Barkley. We've caught a couple I should have mounted but they were females. I want to mount a big Male redear in its spawning colors!
A net and a bucket both in the same trip, now this is a great day. Thank you for not giving me a heart attack. When you hauled that first shellcracker in, I started getting sick. I thought, I can't stand him throwing those fine eating fish back. Great day for sure. Ask the lady of the house to get the grease hot. U dun good!
When we catch em here in central Georgia, shellcracker and bluegills in general will have the prettiest colors on em. They'll be super dark a lot of times with a lot of purple and deep blues. I'm generally a big fish fisherman, but I do love catching panfish too.
Great day of fishing and the Red Ear Sunfish are what we call Shell Crackers here in South Carolina. I think the state record is well over five pounds for these hard fighting bream, my personal best is going to be somewhere between two to three pounds and those were huge! Good to catch and eat! Filet, batter, fry them up with some great hush puppies as well as a side of grits and you are in for a lip smacking adventure! Thank you, enjoy your videos!
Love your plain and simple techniques and they produce. Been fishing all my life for panfish but still have learned a bunch. Keep them coming and God bless.
It's Monday night. No snow yesterday. You're right. We don't seem to get snow like we used to. Maybe we'll get some in Feb or March. It's rare but I've seen it in April.
Nice fish! It really surprises me that nobody else is ever fishing the Tennessee river when you go out and film it. Where I live there would be a thousand boats in that river when you pull out quality size fish like that.
Richard you can catch any species of fresh water fish at any season of the year. I don’t know of anyone else that can do it but you prove it all the time.
A few stump knocker's and a little yellow corn meal, and a black iron pan with a little oil, and a couple hush puppy's and some purple hull peas with some snaps, meal fit for a king. Best wishes from south Florida....
At 64 I have never disengaged the reel like you did in this video, nor have I ever seen or heard of it. You, sir, are a genious. Talk about old dogs and new tricks.
Nobody explains fishin like the machine explains fishin
Richard is simply the best. Down to earth good advice. Fun. Nobody loves fishing more than he does, which is precisely why he is so good. Thanks
I have to agree! He slays the fish!
Because it's good fer ya!!😂
3 things happen when Richard goes fishing. The weather will be bad, he usually forgets the net and fish will be caught.
Lol nature of the Alabama weather. This time last year we were coming out of a period where it barely touched freezing for two months straight, to more usual with it 70º day before yesterday and today barely broke freezing lol. If it's not the weather it's TVA release messing with ya.
Mike R so what's your point. You act like you never been fishn b4
Bill Walker RGTFM is BOSS
Agreed!
That;s because he knows that fish don't mind getting wet!
you are an american original. love your genuine character and real fishing knowledge. you still have that child like love of the past time unlike so many high intensity you tube fishing channels. always come away remembering what made me love fishing in the first place
Richard Gene: The only fisherman to win multiple two man buddy tournaments while fishing completely alone. Great stuff buddy, keep'em coming!!
This man is more American than what America currently is right now.
I love to see another light tackle man lock down the drag and back reel the big ones......Charlie Brewer turned me on to that about 40 years ago
I have even back reeled smb in canada on ul tackle and Charlie clued me in to that also. sStill have his book from years ago
I've learned so much from watching "The Machine.."His enthusiasm for fishing is catching....LOL
Ya know , I grew up pan fishing and as I got a little older I discovered big bass fishing in a big way , and I moved pan fishing to a back burner . Now I'm much older (where do the years go ?) , and I started watching your videos and was motivated in a big way to move pan fishing up front again . I can not get enough of your videos! Thank you Mr. Richard for putting them out there for us to enjoy.
beer1fan Target yourself on different species. No doubt. Great teacher!!! Thanks
Shellcrackers and coppernose bluegills are the best eating fish out there. You making me wanna get off this couch and go catch some.
GIT!
Chad Clemmons yea I doubt anyone's delivering any to your couch bud. Lol
Randy Wilson I like perch!........just kidding. I like em all
As cold as its about to get that couch may be better! haha
Richard, you are the Bob Ross of fishing. Thanks
You're absolutely right Richard Gene. There's nothing better than catching than fishing. You make it look simple.
What I like about Mr. Machine is that he doesn't discriminate, he'll just as soon catch one species as another.
This man catches them every time, love the little tips his gives without even realizing it, such as needing to retie the knot, light line big fish need to make sure the hook is set for the next fish, you rock Richard
Good job...glad you finally got yourself a decent net that don't get everything tangled..be sure not to forget it....thanks..
Some of the most fun you can have Bluegill and Shellcracker on ultra lite gear . Great video Richard !!!
Two thumbs for the quiet southerner. Fishing is supposed to be fun and relaxing and watching your content is relaxing with good bits of useful info.
Richard Gene...i appreciate your videos because they're entertaining, informative & kid friendly. Keep them coming!
I LOVE IT!!! Shellcrackers are the best fish in freshwater, hands down. Great video and please do more redear videos!!
I can't tell the difference in the taste between a Redear and bluegill
Several things come to mind when I read the comments. First is there is no doubt that Richard loves to fish and loves to give the fish a fighting chance. Them fish and some grits with cheese and a cup of coffee or Kool aid will be great when the snow comes 👍🏽
There are a ton of fishing videos on TH-cam. But there's only one you must watch & that's Richard Gene The Fishing Machine! He and Elmo ain't just catching fishing, they're showing how to catch fish!

I learn so much just from watching your channel. When I have a hard time catching fish I always refer back to your videos. Thank you Richard Gene.
Great videos, I raised up in and around Lake Okeechobee and chased Crappie and Bluegll and Crackers, loved every minute, now at 80 and crippled up I love to watch your films they give me great pleasure you and Elmo keep at it, God bless
I know this is an old vid. But I have to say, I'm 58 years old and I have never seen anyone backreel like you did in this vid . Never once.
I grew up in Tampa fl. using cheap reels and saltwater fishing for big fish. I had to learn to backreel catching big red fish and flounder or those cheap reels wouldn't handle them 😂God bless and thank you for watching!
These videos bring back so many memories from my childhood… I love it
Richard you've elevated in my mind to a fishing sage. Not many as solid as you
I love fishing for red ear. You are the first guy I seen that don’t use a weight. That is the way my Daddy taught me. Been doing it for 50 years. I’ve had a lot of guys in the boat laugh at me until they saw the results.
I love fishing for pan fish,,when I was a kid,we would ask the farmers if we could fish,,,my brothers and I would fish all day,,,I miss them days,,thanks for tickling my memories,,,
Man it seems like you always have the water to yourself, no boats running up and down the lake ! Love it
My goodness there Richard Gene, those were some beautiful shell crackers. And on one pound test line. That little flimpsy rod you were using and leaving the reel in free spool was the answer and of course the most important thing is patience and don't horse em.
Great job again my man. Keep em coming!!
Richard please keep it up..u make my day.
1lb test.....Richard Gene has NO FEAR! Mad skills
Vote the Machine as TH-cam's best fishing show.
Been fishing all my life for Florida to Alaska for every species you can think of but absolutely love panfish... crappie, bluegill, shell craker awesome fun and great to eat too. Fluorocarbon line is the ticket... TY... MH

I just love the way you explain how to fish
Good times Richard! I thoroughly enjoy all your videos. A definite highlight to my day when I see you have posted a new one! Those shellcrackers were huge. Compared to any that I have caught here in south eastern Virginia anyway. Hahaha
If ole Bigfoot and Elmo met up in the woods then went back and told their families what they saw - neither one of 'em would be believed.
👍
HAHA I just watched it like all his videos and still don't believe it!
Watching Richard fish makes me smile; he's good !
Mr. Fishing machine,
My name is Alex. I am down here in East Texas.

I have noticed when it’s calm and really quiet you scale back your “it’s good for ya!” Routine. Great video Richard!
I love your videos! You have taught me more about bluegill and crappie fishing. I like bluegill to eat the best. Thanks
I enjoy all your shows, but since I prefer pan fishing above all other fishing, I most especially enjoy your pan fishing videos.
A shellcracker is the best fighter in freshwater. What a tremendous species! I catch some true pigs here on Lake Barkley. We've caught a couple I should have mounted but they were females. I want to mount a big Male redear in its spawning colors!
Love the Sport in your fishing! 1lb test line.....EXCELLENT! Enjoy your videos!
The best Shellcracker video I’ve ever seen. I fish Lake Eufaula Al and I’m sure going to try that technique.

Now that's what I'm trying to view some phenomenal fishing Mr Gene and thanks Elmo.... go Elmo!!!!!
You nut! You remind me of my I'm Grandaddy! I would love to go and just sit in the boat while you fish. God bless you Machine.
Great day of fishing and the Red Ear Sunfish are what we call Shell Crackers here in South Carolina. I think the state record is well over five pounds for these hard fighting bream, my personal best is going to be somewhere between two to three pounds and those were huge! Good to catch and eat! Nice jumbo shellies Richard! Me and my dad got into some like that this past spring ain't nothing like it!
Once again always entertaining and catching fish when nobody else can. I always Look forward to your videos. Keep up the great work.
Everybody wants to see a catch and cook Mr Richard. Great video
Love your plain and simple techniques and they produce. Been fishing all my life for panfish but still have learned a bunch. Keep them coming and God bless.
Go between March and September and fish backwater Creek's and use a cork with a split shot and a number 8 shank hook and u will tear umm up
My Buddies And I Agree;
When You Say “Lets Put Em’ In The Bucket” Sounds As Kool As Ice Water👍🏾❗️
It's Monday night. No snow yesterday. You're right. We don't seem to get snow like we used to. Maybe we'll get some in Feb or March. It's rare but I've seen it in April.
I love catching Shellcrackers! One of the best eating fish bar none!
Richard Gene, you are the man. I would love to see u do a catch and cook sometime.
Nice fish! It really surprises me that nobody else is ever fishing the Tennessee river when you go out and film it. Where I live there would be a thousand boats in that river when you pull out quality size fish like that.
Love your video's. I just wish they were longer. I know you do your best so keep them coming. Your the best!
Great video Richard reminds me of my days growing up in Florida as a child. I used to love to catch stumpknockers shellcrackers
Always look forward to your videos.
