- Scenes from a super-intense thunderstorm here in Connecticut. A remarkable storm. I opened the front door to get a better view and within a couple of seconds a huge bolt arced out in the street, maybe 75 feet away. There is a park across the street and the next day I found that primary part of the bolt splintered two large trees. Blew the bark right off them.
The second half of the video I shot from under the awning outside my back yard. A scary storm, we get them like this once or twice per summer.

Nice! That was a very intense storm. I've seen storms like this in Minnesota, but not quite with as many close strikes.

Wow! You have some excellent composure not to make a sound when the lightning hit at around 0:09. I would probably have uttered some profanity if lightning struck that close. I also love how at 0:48 through 1:10 there's a series of 4 strikes getting closer.
that lightning strike at 1:07 reminds me of a luncheon we had in back in the 80's it hit a piece of tin roof in the yard

Great vid Guy! Wish I could have captured the lightning strike that hit a tree 50 from my neighbor's apt when I was there. The thunder from it just about blew my ears out, even with my fingers in them. Tree died and got cut down earlier this year, but I remember in Sept 2006, I was riding the Metro bus in Portland, Maine when, right next to the airport's runway, the bus I was on got struck by lightning. That was quite the adventure. Lol!
About 10 years ago, a little 20 foot tree at the corner of home was struck by lightening. All we heard was a loud BANG, as though a stick of dynamite fired off. I looked outside and noticed that the tree trunk was split in half and was steaming. That was interesting.
that is possible, but usually the"snapping" sound heard a split second before the strike is caused by the positive streamer coming off the ground connecting with the negatively charged stepped leader. It also indicates you are extremely close to the discharge.
Kind of like when you get a shock from a spark and you hear that snap sound. Same thing but on a larger scale.

That happened here last night at about 3 in the morning! Since it was not raining yet my mom thought a bomb had gone off nearby or something.

If you pause at the right time you can hear the sound of the bark snapping and a little part of the lightning hitting the street.

Your lucky it did not bounce off the tree. My aunt was struck that way the lightning bolt hit a tree and shot right through her open door knocking her unconscious.

@dingutscal Actually it hit two large trees across the street. Blew the bark off them and melted the blacktop at their base. The bolt arced into the middle of the street. It missed the tree you're referring to.

This must have been one of those real nasty storms if it was the same day you posted this or during that week. Because that same storm ripped through here in NJ and killed 1 person and seriously injured another while they were standing under a tree.Don't know what they were thinking!

definitely a some sweet blasts, that first one, you had to have felt some. Lightning is unimagineably powerful. Had a bolt hit right over my head when i was a kid. Sent me flying. That nice crispy snap from it. I still hear it in my ears.

One of my biggest fears.
Although most don't survive being struck it's still Amazing with the power anyone who is struck and lucky enough to survive.

Nice capture. I liked the thunder at the 1:07 mark. The bolt had to hit at least 40 feet from where you were. Now where you were standing was at a bit of a tedious place. This still deserves a 5 star rating for sure.
Wow. One time it was storming at my house and I was gonna go outside (why I don't know) and I tried to open the door but it was stuck and then right before I opened it all of a sudden lightning struck right on the other side of the door and I just thanked God that the door was stuck because that was scary

New England electrical storms are somewhat underrated. T-storms can be intense anywhere, but up here they have a way of feeling extra close.
