    So I'm pretty sure when he kissed Historia's hand at the end of season 3, the reason his face looked so contorted and horrified (as we also saw again in Mappa's own stlye in this episode) was because Eren saw Grisha's memory of receiving future Eren's memory of future Eren talking to Grisha in the paths while viewing Grisha's memory of that same day. So the fact that Eren was able to get into the Paths is what makes this cyclical bootstrap paradox. Eren can remember previous Attack Titans' memories, and if future Eren sent his own memories into the past Attack Titans, then that becomes a past memory as well, which would then allow past Eren to see his own future memories, thus allowing him to see the future.
    At this point, the only question left in my mind is WHICH memories has Eren sent back from the future, WHO did he send each one to, and which ones has he HIMSELF now seen in retrospect? I think the reason that he's sometimes cocky and sometimes flustered is because he himself only knows the outcome, but not necessarily every step to get there. So when he saw Gabi aiming that rifle, that was something he hadn't seen yet, so he was shocked. In fact, he seemed shocked that Marley was attacking them at all, so that whole battle he likely didn't know the outcome of. All he knew was that somehow he and Zeke were destined to touch, so he had to "keep moving forward" as it were. He got so angry during that fight, I think, because his own lack of knowledge. He knows he's going to win, but the Marleyans kept getting in his way, so he was basically like "don't you know who I am? Why are you ants fighting against ME?"

      He's right though, Eren can choose what things he's seeing/seen and show other past (for him) attack titan holders.
      You'll notice, whenever Grisha "sees" Zeke, Eren walks behind him. As Tran put, it's like watching a biker doing a parkour course, with a camera behind him live streaming.
      So by the time they're underground in the hideout, where Eren crouches and speaks to Grisha, Eren is making Grisha view basically through Eren's eyes, what Eren says and does.
      In short, Eren is the complete mass manipulator of AoT so far. Zeke thought he uno reversed Eren, meanwhile Eren is playing 5D past, present, and future chess at the same time.
      Also, only manga readers are ready for the next episode 😈

    The reason that Grisha can sometimes see Zeke:
    As we learned, the owner of the Attack Titan can see memories of it's future Inheritors.
    Let's take a look at the scene where Grisha is in the Basement and can see Zeke.
    Notice how Eren is standing behind Grisha, looking to Zeke. Basically at this moment Grisha receives the memory of future Eren standing in the basement behind himself and looking at Zeke. So Grisha actually sees Zeke through Eren's eyes.
    The same goes for the scene at the End where Grisha apologizes to his son. Notice Eren standing behind Grisha.
    That's why he sees Zeke without actually seeing him😂🤯🤯🤯

    It took me a few rewatches but I think I got it figured out.
    Eren is the one in control because of his unique circumstance. He has the Attack Titan, the Founding Titan and a Titan with Royal blood all in the paths. Presumably no other Attack Titan has been in this position so he has access to unique abilities.
    It's not time travel, it's a memory causal loop. Grisha can see Eren's memories, which means Grisha can see Eren's memories of watching his whole life. When Grisha is being goaded on by Eren, from his POV he's seeing himself at a side angle being spoken to by Eren.
    This is why Frida or any previous founders can't or have ever heard of doing this: It's not interacting with the past, it's interacting with memories past and future, and so long as the founding titan is unable to see future memories it can never affect the past.
    Lastly, Eren knows the future not because he's clairvoyant. He has access to his dad's memories through the founding titan, which means Eren has seen everything that a future version of Eren which we haven't seen yet has shown Grisha.
    He and his dad are literally using each other as windows of knowledge to the future. It's so fucked.

    In the Grisha dining room scene where the young Eren answered Grisha''s question about why he wanted to join the scouts, Eren answered "And if no one is willing to take their place then the lives of all who've died will be for nothing".
    This was a not so subtle dig at Grisha reminding him not to forget his mission (the lives of his sister/comrades) and abandon his thought of living a normal life and go out and steal the founding Titan's power. It was his cue that today is the day he needed to do it.
    It actually answered my long standing question since I watched this series in the beginning. How did Grisha knew that this day of all days was the day he needed to kill the Reiss family since it was the day the Colossal Titan attacked the wall? I couldn't believe it was just a coincidence.

    This episode is one of the best episodes of any show i have ever seen. I mean i don’t Even know where to start. Eren’s manipulation towards Grisha and the other attack titans is just a crazy plot twist. Eren was literally pulling the strings from behind the scenes manipulating everyone so he would Get the outcome he wanted in the future.
    Grisha’s VA deserves an award for his performance here. Simply outstanding. The end of the episode made me tear up, Grisha was never a bad person. It was Eren all along. Remember back in season 3 when Eren touched historia’s hand? He saw himself manipulating Grisha and into the future and the past so that’s why he looked like he was so lost after it happened. Because Eren learnt what he must do after that u totally see his attitude change over the rest of the show, especially s4 part 1 Eren.
    When Eren said he was «disgusted» in s3 about his father killing the royal family he was actually not disgusted for the reason he killed them but for the fact that he didn’t. Eren was literally disgusted with his own father not waiting to murder children and people for his sake.
    Another thing, if ur wondering about why Grisha could see Zeke think about it like this: We learnt that the Attack titan can see memories of it’s future attack titan inheritors. Eren with both the founding and attack titan here and also came in contact with royal blood sent memories of eren’s future (what we Are seeing in the episode) to Grisha so Grisha knew he was being watched because he saw the memories through eren’s eyes since it was eren’s memories. Therefor he didn’t actually see Zeke or touch him like the anime made it seem like. He just saw him through the memories and therefor «saw» him.
    In the middle of the episode we also see Grisha saying he wanted Frida to stop the titans from killing everyone and not destroying the walls. At about 14.20 ish u see Grisha’s expression kind of change and he then says «My house got destroyed during the attack» This was before it Even happened. This means Eren sent Grisha memories of what was going to happen and that’s also why he did what he did along with eren’s manipulation. Frida was also controlled by the vow reanouncing war as we clearly see when her eyes changed color into purple after she opened them again.
    Grisha also said to Zeke to «stop Eren».
    Grisha was a man who lived his entire life full of hatred towards Marley and hated them with his entire heart. The fact that even Grisha thought Eren’s plan or the memories of what the future holds was way to much shows how terrible and gruesome Eren’s plan really is.
    All of this is extremly hard to understand but i hope ur reading all this to clear some stuff up.
    The writing here is nothing but perfect. Aot is truely a masterpiece man.

      Yeah the placement of Eren kissing historia’s hand was a little odd I don’t blame people not getting it. In the manga it’s more spread out while we are seeing grisha freak out. Also Eren’s “rage” face after grisha says “stop Eren” looks nothing like the moment where he kissed her hand so it’s just looks like a random “Eren being angry” frame.

    Just to make something clear, Eren doesn't exactly know *everything* . Current Eren only knows what Grisha knew because of Future Eren's memories (confusing, I know). He only knows the RESULT of certain things, not the way they happen. For example, Eren knew Sasha would die because he couldn't see her in the future memories, but he didn't know *how* she would die. This is why Eren reacts the way he does when he finds out Sasha died because he realizes he is already trapped in this path he set for himself.

  • @nr-ej3el
    @nr-ej3el 2 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    Summary of this episode: (NO SPOILER)
    Basically throughout the series it was portrayed that Grisha killed the royal family from his on will, however Eren is the one that manipulated his father by making him believe that Eldians and Carla is safe by showing him fragments of memories instead of everything which means that Eren was controlling what his father could see and not see, which means he was playing games with his father. When Grisha says “Eren isn’t showing me everything for a reason” the moment he says that, Eren shows him the full memories and so that’s why Grisha says it’s so terrible that that Zeke needs to stop him.
    So what does this mean? Eren has been playing 8D chess since the beginning, since the first episode of AOT, it was all orchestrated by (future) Eren, so everything that’s led to this moment of his mother dying, Hannes dying, the day the wall was broken, (future) Eren knew this would be the outcome. Until Eren kissed Historia hand in season 3, last episode, he saw the full memory of him manipulating his father to kill the royal family and that’s why he was distraught when he saw the ocean, because he realised he was the cause of everything.
    AOT is a masterpiece

    Great reaction of an amazing episode. Two facts to keep in mind:
    1- Every time Grisha sees adult Zeke, he was looking from Eren's POV, since he was seeing Eren's future memories. Meaning that Grisha can see himself on 3rd person view. Every time he sees adult Zeke, Eren is standing behind him so he has a clear view of Zeke, and when he started to mention Zeke's name while he was dreaming, previously Eren had looked at the photograph. The same thing happens when Grisha sees the adult Eren, which happens when Eren is looking at him, or is observing from a similar perspective to his own.
    2- When Grisha first discovered the Reiss's hideout, he was very lucky not to choose that moment to take the Founding Titan (his reason was continue living with his new family; after all, Grisha wanted to make the most of the time he had left, knowing that he had a 13-year life limit since he inherited the Attack Titan by devouring Kruger). You may be wondering why I mention this. It's because its possessor then was not the young and inexperienced Frieda Reiss, but her experienced uncle Uri Reiss. If he had fought against Uri, Grisha would probably have lost to him because Uri had combat experience (after all, he easily disarmed a fighter like Kenny, and he would not have hesitated to seize Grisha's moment of doubt as he beheld Rod's children) and on the other hand, if he were alive when Grisha went to fulfill his mission to take the Founding Titan, Kenny wouldn't be far from his friend, and although he will not possess any of the Nine Titans, he was an enemy to be feared. After all, he was an Ackerman.

    • @arttusuonsivu8492
      @arttusuonsivu8492 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think Uri would've beat Grisha neccesarily. Uri had no experience against titans, well neither did Grisha, but then they're on the same level. Also Grishas titan was bigger, and buffer than Uri's (from what we saw of Uri's titan, it was pretty average), and Grishas attack titan might be inherently stronger than the limited titan that the Reiss's had. Also Kenny had no experience against titans, and didn't use swords, so he wouldn't have been much help. The only edge Uri has is if Grisha hesitates. Even then the future Eren might just spring him into action, considdering that Eren has already been shown changing the past, that would've inevitably lead to Grisha being killed by Frieda, so there's no reason it can't happen here.

    This is the best explanation I'm aware of about what Eren saw when he kissed Historia's hand.
    When he kissed her hand, Eren was only shown Grisha's memories. He did not look into his own future directly. But, since Grisha was sent future memories from future Eren, Eren also saw those through Grisha.
    Future Eren sends Grisha his memory of telling Grisha to kill the royal family -----> Grisha sees the future memory and kills the royal family -----> Past Eren sees Grisha receiving the future memory
    So Eren only saw what future Eren chose to send to Grisha. So he only knew exactly as much as Grisha did of the future. Ever since the medal ceremony, Eren hasn't seen any more of the future. That also means he knows of the "terrible" thing Grisha says that Eren will do, but that is a future memory Eren has not had yet. That was a memory that Eren will send to Grisha when it happens in the next couple episodes.

    • @adrianmorales5770
      @adrianmorales5770 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      **SPOILER** Eren knows that the rumbling will happen, or as he says "it already happened". That's why Grisha says he never would have imagined something so terrible and even though Grisha hates Marley, he's asking Zeke to stop Eren. Manga 123 and 131 also make clear Eren knows what's going to happen. But yes, future Eren is the one 'in contol'.

    • @elheber
      @elheber 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      And all this was only possible because of Zeke. The secret ability of the Attack Titan has always been to see select memories of future titans, so it's impossible to ever see themselves in 3rd person and relive the same events twice like Grisha did. It was Zeke who enabled this to happen by bringing Eren to explore Grisha's memories. I personally think Zeke just wanted to see his father one last time, more than he needed to convince Eren that he was manipulated.
      I wish I didn't read the last paragraph of your post. I had my own theories.

      I've got a question- why did Eren only see Grisha's memory sent by future Eren when he kissed Historia's hand at the end of Season 3 part 2? What about when Historia touched Eren in the Reiss Chapel in Season 3 Part 1?

    • @TheHUmAnSaReWeAk
      @TheHUmAnSaReWeAk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@plernhaddock9588 I'm not sure there's a better answer to that other than Isayama didn't want Eren and the audience to see that yet. If you want a lore-friendly answer, you can look at it as Eren simply unlocking the ability to see his dad's memories, so he only saw very vague flashes. So when he touched Historia later, he had already built a stronger connection with his dad's memories after reading Grisha's diaries, so it unlocked the final pieces he was missing.

    So in order to avoid any confusion regarding the time travel mechanics, I will break down what type of Time travel we're dealing with here.
    AOT operates by a particular type of time travel where it's almost impossible to change the past even if you somehow go back in time. And any change that you tried to cause was always meant to happen in the overall timeline. Here time is a fixed circle, not a stream. We may see Eren meddle in the past but that was always meant to happen. This calls into the question of the existence of free will in the world of Attack of Titan.
    The Attack Titan's ability is to receive the memories of its future inheritors. This was hinted when Kruger mentioned Mikasa and Armin towards the end of S3. Keep in mind, they can only view these memories but can't interact with them. So how was Eren able to meddle in the past?
    Well, he had 3 perfect conditions:
    1.He had the ability of the Attack Titan
    2.The ability of the Founding Titan
    3.He was also in contact with someone with royal blood AKA Zeke.
    After Zeke tapped Eren's head, they were able to view Grisha's past memories with Eren using the power of the coordinate. They were freely able to view the past as if it were through a one way mirror.
    Now if Eren had any other Titan other than the Attack Titan, he would only be able to look. But since Attack Titan can see forward in time, Grisha can use this to see Eren's recollection of the same event that he's currently experiencing in real time.
    So this mean that whenever Grisha can see or hear Eren, he's actually recieving a brief future memory from Eren's POV where he can see out of his eyes and hear his words. That means he is seeing himself from a 3rd perspective. Then if he responds, his response is simply part of the memory that Eren/Zeke are viewing, allowing for a two way communication through time.
    Also Note that everytime, Grisha sees Zeke, Eren is always standing behind his dad. So whenever Grisha sees Zeke, it is from actually due to the memories from Eren's POV
    Another thing to add: Eren did NOT see everything in the future. Eren only saw CRUCIAL moments in the future, for example, he saw Pieck pointing a gun at him when he kissed Historia’s hand 4 years ago, this is why he was so calm when she threatened to shoot him, because Eren KNEW she wouldn’t shoot him. However, Eren DIDN’T know that Porco was going to try to eat him just a couple of minutes later. Even Eren doesn’t know EVERYTHING that will happen
    This post should help anyone who’s still confused

    *FREE OF SPOILERS*
    Eren can not freely look into future. In order for the Attack titan to see the future, the memories has to be send by it's future inheritors. It is confirmed when Grisha wants Eren to show him more of the future, but Eren doesn't so Grisha doesn't know everything. So Eren was never able just look into his own future. Thinking like that, Eren didn't know everything up to this point, he has seen some stuff ( Grisha being influenced by Erens future himself), and don't know what will happen from now on, after he has done his little "influence the father quest". Also... Eren was only able to do that because he is in the paths with a coordinate powers. That made a perfect conditions for him to do what he needed to do, because the power of the coordinate allow to look into past of every eldian ( every eldian is connected through paths, through coordinate) and the attack titan powers can allow it's inheritor to look at the future memories. This means that Eren is seeing the past (like he would be there) and Grisha is seening Eren seeing the past. Grisha has never seen adult Eren, he has only seen himself in 3rd person and old Zeke (You can notice that everytime Grisha mention or talk to Zeke, Eren is always behind both of them).
    Oh and Frieda couldn't use the founders powers fully because of the first kings will.
    Hope that can help. :D

    (SPOILER FREE!)
    Grisha didn't see old Zeke and Eren through his perspective, instead he saw it all through Eren's perspective since Eren sent his memories back in time to Grisha via the Attack Titan. Notice how whenever Grisha sees Zeke, Zeke is within Eren's sight, so he saw it all in 3rd person view basically which means when he stared in Eren's eyes he actually saw himself. Must've trippy af for Grisha.
    The "future" Grisha saw is Eren's memories that he sent back to Grisha, Grisha has no control over what he sees from the future, it's all handpicked by Eren himself.

    Whenever Grisha saw Zeke it was through Eren’s pov. Eren is always behind Grisha and Zeke is in front of them. So when Grisha hugged him, he was only hugging air at the time.

    Amazing and beautiful episode. Mind blowing that Eren gassed up his dad. That him being ashamed wasn’t because he did it, it was because he didn’t want to! 😱😱😱 And the small moment when Eren is watching him and Mikasa when he gave her his scarf. That means something!

      Also, if you go back to S3/ e21, when Owl is talking to Grisha? That’s EREN talking to his dad!!!! That’s why he says “In order to save Mikasa, Armin, and everyone. It must be done!” Then Owl gets confused cuz he doesn’t know either. 😱😱😱💜💜💜

    The Devil was probably Marleyan propaganda but now its real and its Eren. He was literally the Devil in Grisha´s shoulder. This theme of "becoming a devil" is present since Erwin.
    Also in order to avoid any confusion regarding the time travel mechanics, I will break down what type of Time travel we're dealing with here.
    AOT operates by a particular type of time travel where it's impossible to change the past even if you somehow go back in time. And any change that you tried to cause was always meant to happen in the overall timeline. Here time is a fixed circle, not a stream. We may see Eren meddle in the past but that was always meant to happen and always happenned.
    1) He had the ability of the Attack Titan
    2) The ability of the Founding Titan
    3) He was also in contact with someone with royal blood AKA Zeke.
    And I think you are right Eren saw himself doing all of this in Grisha´s Memories when he kissed Historia´s hand, that was also when he kinda became more distant.
    This is all really interesting because it touches on one of the central themes of this story: What is freedom? Is there such a thing? Is Eren even culpable of all of his actions, or is he himself a puppet of himself and always was? Like Kenny said "We are all a slave to something" and Eren seems to be a Slave to himself in a way.
    A perfect AoT episode that touched on all of its central themes: "Devil" "Freedom" "Family"

    Geisha's VA (subbed) was so good that the English dub VA tried to sound like him. Down to the very subtle voice cracks. What an incredible production. The music. The sequences. The character development. The symbolism and nuances. I don't understand how people can say this is a bad show.

  • @itsmesteve1081

    I've seen a lot of people mess this part up. Including manga readers. The reason eren can control what grisha sees is because of this founding titan's power to control what they can see. Eren is a very special person because he is the first person to hold both the attack titan and founding titan AND having access to royal blood. This means he can control how much of the future memories attack titan shifters can actually see. If he only had the attack titan then he couldn't control how much the attack titan shifters could see. If he only had the founding titan then he couldn't see in to the future. If he only had royal blood he would basically be useless unless somebody wanted to use his blood to access the powers of the nine titans.
    It is also implied that eren could also alter the founding titan memories too because in season 3 frieda was brushing her hair in a mirror and she felt eren looking from her perspective . eren then proceeded to wake up in the jail cell with mikasa and started telling armin, mikasa and hange the story of grisha and his aunt faye. As we all know only attack titan shifters can see memories of future shifters , BUT if eren has both the founding titan and the attack titan then in theory it should be possible to use the founding titan's ability to allow past founding titan shifters to also have the attack titan's ability to see memories of future shifters as well. If this is true it means eren most likely could have also been manipulating the royal family as well. All because we know from that one scene frieda did in fact feel eren's presence

    - Grisha can view the future attack titan's memories.
    - Everything that Grisha sees this episode, is through Eren's eyes.
    - Thus, Grisha sees Zeke because Zeke is standing in front of Eren while both Jaeger bros view the memories together.

    Eren or future user can send memories down to the past. The reason why His dad saw zeke was because eren was in a position through out the episode to see both zeke and his dad. So in retrospect, his dad is see the pov of his dad and zeke because eren saw them both. just like how at the end eren was watching his dad hug zeke so that is why there was a connection.

    A small but amazing detail I heard someone say is regarding how Eren's mom mentions his ears turn red when he lies. In every interaction we've seen him with Zeke, his hair is covering his ears. But when he spoke to Armin and Mikasa, he tied his hair back and showed his ears. He was hiding the lying from Zeke but was open with his friends

    Try to look at it like EREN is the camera for Grisha. Both of them are the attack titans and Grisha can see the Future from EREN's POV. That's why he can only see ZEKE and himself and not EREN. That's why he was so stunned when he was on his way out of their house cause he was basically looking at himself through EREN when he was at the door. Look back at it again 😉

    I think eren already said enough that Eren is himself, The hatred about how their freedom has been taken away by the enemy outside the wall keeps him pushing on and he didn't care anymore even if he knows that he's action killed his friend in the process it's just gonna make him keep moving because those sacrifices will be in vain. eren when he's a kid he wants freedom I think that's why when Frieda tells his father that in the end eldia people who will die eren face is in rage, is just sacrificing the people who don't know anything and get blamed for their past king action.
    Eren is just characteristic of his own quote
    "If someone is willing to take my freedom... I won't hesitate to take theirs. Our father never made me that way. It's who I've been since the time I was born."

    When Eren kissed Historia's hand he had a glimpse of some future events, I don't think he knows absolutely every detail, he still show some surprise in season 4 in some moments, but after that kiss his eyes changed, it is noticeable even in season's 3 final episode.

    Hey guys, to explain:
    The founding titan’s power allowed them to go through Grisha’s memories. The attack Titan’s power, allows the current user to send memories at their control to the previous users, making the previous user able to “see” the future which is not in their control.
    While Zeke and Eren were walking through Grisha’s memories, Eren was sending his “real-time” memories back to Grisha at that moment, which is why Grisha kept seeing Zeke, but it was always from future Eren’s POV and he never actually saw Eren. This is why Grisha could “hear” Eren convincing him before the fight with Frieda. Eren only sent back certain memories at his choice to guide Grisha. (If you notice certain points through this episode, Grisha was staring directly at Eren, but really he was looking at himself through Future Eren’s POV, so he only knew where Eren was standing.)
    When Eren made contact with Historia 4 years ago kissing her hand, the founding Titan within Eren made contact with Royal blood, allowing him to see previous attack Titan user’s memories (including Grisha’s). This included Grisha’s memories of seeing Future Eren’s memories. This means, Eren has only seen the future, to the extent of the memories that Future Eren sent to Grisha.
    Hopefully this explains!

    Idk if it's correct or not,but i feel like Attack Titan didn't really have the power to see the future,but it was Eren who is making them see the future. Bcoz,even the Reiss family were surprised to hear that Attack Titan had such an ability.
    As u said,Eren is kinda different and maybe he can use the power of the founding Titan,not fully,but partially. And he may be using that power to pass on his memories or the memories that he want his ancestors to see in order to fulfill his dream.
    Just a theory!!

    • @hamsterfromabove8905
      @hamsterfromabove8905 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My understanding is that the Attack Titan can't see the future. Rather The Attack Titan can send memories back to the past. What that means is that every Attack Titan holder is being controlled by the last person to hold the Attack Titan. Since the holders of the Attack Titan can selectively show things to the past to manipulate them. Eren refused to show Carla's fate, because Grisha may have collapsed in defeat if he actually knew he couldn't save her.

    • @elheber
      @elheber 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After rewatching this episode a few times, I believe it *is* the Attack Titan's power. It's why the Attack Titans have always been rebellious. Eren isn't special. Zeke is special. It was only because Zeke took Eren into Grisha's memories that the Attack Titan was able to interact with itself for the first time.

    • @botheredbiskit
      @botheredbiskit 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the attack titan can REMEMBER the future only. The scene where Krueger tells Grisha to save Mikasa and Armin he was holding a syringe about to Inject Grisha, in that moment it triggered a future memory of Grisha holding the syringe about to inject Eren, where Grisha tells Eren he has to save Mikasa and Armin. Now Eren is different because he has the co-ordinate too he can essentially move through the paths backwards and forwards outside of time. He uses the attack titans ability to remember the future to send Grisha specific targeted memories in order to Influence the outcome of the future.
