I can't speak for gay people, but I think that it helps that the movie portays multiple gay people, all with different personalities. If it was just him alone, maybe it might come across as an offensive stereotype, but since there's other gay people, it shows that they don't all fit tye same stereotypes.
I was in a psych class with a gay cross dresser but had a manly exterior when he was I guess playing the straight part. He must have been reaching his 50’s at the time, and I would have to guess he may have passed on through 20 years. I don’t remember if he mentioned it but I can almost ascertain he had been a heavy coke user. He was quite a nice fellow, a class gentleman. Didn’t do any kind of coming on to you which I would imagine he may had at least feel a struggle being with younger men. Sometimes when I read these comments I do think of the great gay people who have nice demeanors.
Same. It's not meant to be a stereotype, just a characterization. I also think not only did it work, it's one of the most memorable characters in film.
I’m gay, from Guatemala, and I’m absolutely not offended. Hank Azaria was amazing in that role, genuine, pure, and tremendously hilarious!! One of my favorite movies ever, and one of my favorite characters ever!!
While Simpsons is by far his most popular thing, back then tv was considered a much lower level than film. Cartoons even less so. Doing a movie like Birdcage put his name out there in the "high" lvl of hollywood.
Well Simpson's definitely got him some auditions and stuff like that I'm sure, but his face is not shown. This movie is actually him not just his voice. He is one of the most talented people I have ever seen in my entire life. It is astonishing how amazing he is
Well said on the comments, and lets not forget, that making a movie with Robin williams at the time, meant that you made it, such comedy geniuses all put together,
@ yup they’re all taking life much too seriously! It’s all about being politically correct, stereotypes and rights! We did all that already boyz! a little laughter goes a long way! Frankie says Relax!
If I could afford an assistant/housekeeper, I would want an Agador. It would just brighten up my life. Azaria's character was a representation of some of the sweetest people on the earth.
No gay person was ever offended by that character, as a matter of fact we love that character and that movie. At least I do. I've never heard anyone complain and if they do they have issues.
THANK YOU!!!!! Besides MOST gay folks have enough common sense to realize that it is a COMEDY, so of course ALL the characters will be exaggerated, somewhat stereotypical and "cartoony" for the sake of LAUGHTER!
That’s the only part of the movie I’ve ever seen criticized. People hate the son as a character typically but we all still love and appreciate the movie. It still was really really great, especially for its time.
@@carmengomez3748 thats the whole point, and by the end he stands up for them....thats the gimmick and farce of it all. The son represents all the shame we gays have felt and live with.
Best Character he has ever played. So glad it was him. I grew up laughing at that movie and learning about all kinds of people in the world. It just showed me, hate is weak and small, love is strong, and laughter is powerful
He didn't play it with a hint of condescension or negativity. He gave the character such a huge heart and part of what's so funny is how sincere he is. That's why everyone loves the character.
The wife and I stayed at the hotel where the birdcage was filmed, not far from a drag club called The Palace, and there was a waiter there that totally embraced this role. Had us laughing like crazy.
Everytime I watch this movie, or just scenes, I catch something new to laugh about! The last one was when Agidor Sparticus sees Albert dressed as Mrs. Coleman for the 1st time, and seeing Nathan Lane trying to wave him away with his head! 😂😂😂
When we saw this movie in the theater when it had just been released with my family, everyone in the theater was rolling with laughter!!! It was one of the most funny movies we had watched in the theater and Agador Spartacus was so endeared by many!! Well done movie!!
I'm gay and latino and I'm not the least bit offended, but instead very amused, I wish I could see more of that character. Agador Spartacus is hilarious. Only some gay guys that act like him will feel offended.
Gay and absolutely loved your performance. The Birdcage was one of the movies everyone in my family could enjoy, even my grandparents admitted to watching it several times.
Iacouerfairy: every scene he was in had me howling!! And then everyone's reactions to him only added to the hilarity! I often watch the movie just to watch Agador! Oh, and then his name. Be still my heart!!
Definitely not offensive - I've watched this movie maybe 3 or 4 times with all or majority gay groups of people, and everyone dies laughing every time he's on screen. What a great character.
One of the BEST movies ever...he did a GREAT job as Agador...just watched the breakfast scene with Robin Williams asking about the coffee: "Is this SLUDGE?" Agador says "Jes, I wanted to do something different so I made sludge."
Right? I myself am not gay, but I thoroughly enjoy this film, and none of my LGBT friends are offended by it; however, I do know very well that some LGBT folks find it offensively stereotypical, but from what I can see, they are a small minority.
"You look like Lucy's stunt double." "No, I'm a combination, of Lucy and Ricky." "And its terrifying." "Say, when are you gonna let me audition for you again?" "When you have talent." "Are you afraid of my Guatemala-ness?" "What?" "My Guatemala-ness, my natural heat; you're afraid I'm too primitive for your little estrogen Rockettes, right?" "Oh, that's right, I'm afraid of your heat. Now, take that wig off or I'll tell Albert you're wearing it." "You do that, I'll tell him you're seeing somebody else while he's on stage." "I have two words for you: "green card". Now, go!" "Ugh...you're such a bitch to everybody..."
You're right, the combo of Lucy AND Ricky was hysterical. Lucille Ball died in 1989. I wish she'd lived to see Hank play the combo of her and Ricky, I think she'd have found that to be funny beyond her imagination.
He knocked that out of the park. That movie had some star power to it, and he actually outshined them all in this. People dont watch videos specifically for the others roles, they do for him though! 😂
I am gay, we come in all types and stripes. Straight acting, feminine acting, drag queen, football player, etc. At the end of the day you either have an attraction to the same sex or you don't. I embrace all my LGBT+ brothers and sisters.

I'm sorry, but Hank completely stole that movie with that character - I love Robin & Nathan, but every bit that had Agador Spartacus in it, I was laughing so hard that I was hurting
I suppose something like The Birdcage was helped by the fact that Agador and Albert were not the only gay characters. I've known a few flamboyantly gay people in my time, so it's not like it's wholly unrealistic -- especially for a movie set in a drag club.
I saw this movie when it came out in '95. I was gay and 16 and I LOVED it!!! I've never been offended by his character, just like the others said in the comments, there are gay people who act/talk like this, it may seem like a stereotype but stereotypes happen because people like that exist! I think it's the non-gays who find it offensive and they feel offended for the gays. While they mean well, we appreciate you all for having our backs, but unless we get offended, we'll let you know. But if we're laughing and are amused and watch this movie hundreds of time, that should be proof that we are not offended.
My late cousin, who passed of AIDS, always referred to himself as a Flaming Gay Man and Hank nailed it. If my cous' were alive he would have been rolling on the floor and fully supportive.
I had a gay friend tell me he is never offended by the over-the-top flamboyant characters, because he knows guys exactly like that. It's barely a caricature.
It is amazing to think about how much actors think about what they are doing and those of us in the audience only see the performance. I love these talks where we find out more, and I loved his character in the movie. This is the first time I ever heard him talk off the movie.
favorite line: Its the shoes! I love Hank whatever he does. I was so happy to see him do this part. Would you believe I fell asleep in the movie theater watching this and it was so funny, near the end when they are trying to find where Genes character was. It was just before my wedding and I guess I was exhausted. When I woke up i realized my fiancee, his sis and boyfriend also sleeping. We have watched this so many times now and till can't get over that we fell asleep. One of my all time favorites. Robin, Nat and Hank were the three stooges of gay in that movie.

How times have changed. Your post was from 3 years ago, and things have certainly changed. Today, everything you say can be taken as offensive. I know people who have been shunned and turned on for saying something that this facet of people disagree with.
I was never offended once by the portrayal on Agador Spartacus. The entire movie is wonderful. It makes me proud to be who I am.
I can't speak for gay people, but I think that it helps that the movie portays multiple gay people, all with different personalities. he's one of the most memorable things in that movie with his pirin tablets, dancing like lucy, falling down, his soup
I'm gay and not offended. There ARE Agadors out there, and they deserve representation just as much as anyone else.
I completely agree. And the fact that all the characters aren't Agadors says a lot.

My wife and I still watch The Birdcage about once a month. Still as funny today as the first time we saw it. God, I do miss Robin Williams.
Me too!! Sometimes once a week!
I thought I was the only one that watch's this movie repeatedly. Ditto on Robin, what a great actor.
“I made you short?” still gets me every time
I'm gay AND Guatemalan, and I loved him in "The Birdcage"! Though I didn't realize this was his break-out role. I always figured "The Simpsons" was...

@gingb8425 yes he was the dog walker. And he was dating/ married to Helen Hunt at the time.
He nailed every scene! Agador is very funny and adorable character!
We gay folks have always had a sense of humor about ourselves, and I hope we still do. I think Hank's performance is wonderful.

TOTAL AGREE. and my pirin is wearing off.
Terrible cook, tho. What hoot the movie is!
The Bird Cage is such an underrated movie. Every actor gave such a great performance. It's one if four movies that I have seen multiple times.
No gay person was ever offended by that character, as a matter of fact we love that character and that movie. At least I do. I've never heard anyone complain and if they do they have issues.
Isn't it a little offensive that the hetero son spends most of the movie being ashamed of his parents? (just asking)
