  • 00:00 Hey, guys. Welcome to my channel. My name's Tony. In this video I'm going to show you how to change the output shaft seal on your YJ. This happens to be an '89, so if you have a '87 to a '94, it should be the same, and you should be able to apply it to a later model vehicle as well.
    00:20 Before we get started, remember, if you like the video, give it a thumbs up. If you have any questions, leave a comment, I'll reply back to you; and don't forget to subscribe to the channel and you'll be able to get on all of our latest uploads.
    00:34 So, you can see the seal that I had put in it, originally, when we did the lift kit in the truck. Took all this out. We dropped the whole suspension out of the thing. This type of seal doesn't have a big boot on it like this one does, so with the drive shaft going in and out a little bit and working, it was leaking and blowing back, you can see it, so, I found this seal. It has a kind of a little bit longer of a snout on it, so that will help to prevent that.
    01:06 So, to take the drive shaft out, you're going to want a 5/16 socket, just put it on there, and you want to crack these loose like that, and rotate the drive shaft around, get them all cracked loose. I'm actually going to hook this up to my cordless gun here it's going to speed this up.
    02:06 Be careful, you don't want to have these caps come off on you. You want to make sure those are there nice and tight because those little [splines 00:02:10] in there, you don't want mess those up. These should come out fairly easy. If they're stubborn you can put some penetrating oil on them, like some PB-Blast.
    02:21 So, to take the drive shaft out, put your hand over the little two caps right here, you don't want them to fall off, and it just slips right out of the transfer case. Take it off, and make sure you put something underneath the snout, or else you'll get some fluid.
    02:55 To remove the transfer case, I'll put shaft seal. There's a couple of ways that you can do it. You can do it with a chisel and kind of tap it out. Or if you have like a seal removal tool, you can do it that way.
    03:13 If you have a seal removal tool, you're probably not watching this video, but it would go in, and you don't want to nick the snout because it can cause a leak, and you can just kind of pry this out. But I realize most of the guys watching this video, you probably have a hammer and a chisel banging around in your tool box, so I'm gonna do it that way.
    03:34 I'm gonna come around underneath, and there should be a little bit of a lip underneath the seal, so you come to the bottom. You just want to catch the lip, you don't want to nick the transfer case at all. Kind of tap it and it should come out fairly easy. There's no movie magic, this is real time. You just tap it, and you don't have to take big swings. Work your way around a little bit. Go near the top. Again, you don't want to gouge this aluminum, you can scratch it up pretty easy. So just loosen it, and [chachling 00:04:37], it should come right out for you.
    04:40 So now that the seal is out, what you're gonna want to do is, you're gonna want to wipe around the inside where the output shaft is. Put your finger in there and make sure there's no burrs or anything that's gonna cause an oil leak for you. It feels pretty good to me, so now we're gonna tap that seal back in.

    I kept seeing fresh oil drops under my jeep thinking it was motor oil until I realized it was further back then the motor, took a closer look and seems like I need a new output seal. Thanks for the help. Informative video

    I would remove the rear housing and replace the seal and the bushing inside the housing. Complete job done and no more leaks !

    No nicks, it’s a pretty good amount of fluid leaking out. I pulled the transfer case to inspect it better.

    when you mentioned a socket or something to hammer the seal in, you want it to be inside the rim or does it have to be on the outside lip?

      It should be somewhat flush as shown in the video.

      Inside the rim is preferred and doesn't hurt anything. I think grabbed a 1.75" one from AutoZone and banged it in perfectly.

    I’ve replaced seal twice and there is still a leak. Any idea of what it might be?

    • @HomeOwnerRepair
      @HomeOwnerRepair  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You may want to check for a nick in the case where the seal presses in. If there is a nick or gouge it might leak a little.
