Terry was one of the greatest guitarists to ever pick up the instrument.... And he really showed the depth of the telecaster....we sure all miss your genius Terry.....🎸🎸🎸
Agreed! Can you imagine how great this guy would have been had he lived.40 plus years more and it would have been remarkable. He was great then but he would have been even better. Same as Jimi cut from the same cloth.
@Chandler Luka Not really my business but if she finds out & she will i bet your history in less than 5 minutes . But i all honesty no i personally don't care ,but you asked.
People saying he's like Hendrix and SRV have it backwards. Terry Kath was an original and played with passion. I too thought the band had gone soft and missed out seeing him live. Shame on me.
Been listening to Chicago since the 1970-71 timeframe, and have collected all of their first 10-12 albums. Although they ALL were/are talented, I agree that Terry was the 'soul' of this band. Their material really started changing after Terry left us (much too soon), and the band was never quite the same afterward. In this particular video, Kath reminds me a little of SRV, who came along not long after this time.
@@packpock4369 - If his unfortunate untimely accident didn't happen, he would've gone solo, and taken Danny with him. Terry was nothing short of amazing in every sense musically, and he was a great guy (I've been told). His guitar playing was unconventional, and he made his own rules. The guy was a masterful genius musically. He put his heart and soul into his craft. 😎👍🏻
Hendricks called Terry the best in the universe. I agree! He was planning on going solo. Wanted to go completely away from pop. He wanted to rock. To think of what could have been
That would've been something! I wish it happened. I read something somewhere he was tired of the horn section and yes, the "pop." Cetera sure made it easily "pop" after Kath's death. I wonder if his daughter has enough material he's done over the years to release an album of his.
I took a lot of crap in the 70s from classmates for liking Chicago, but I had seen them live in Philly Nov 1977 and it was life changing. I couldn't understand why others didn't respect Terry's playing, it was really incredible, full of intensity. After watching this, I truly feel vindicated. So, FU Paul Price! Kath f-in RoCkEd it.
Terry definitely was underated as a player and singer . I was very fortunate to have seen him twice b4 the accident and the band had a different vibe with him on lead guitar. RIP TK ❤️🙏☝️
Agree wholeheartedly with most of the comments here. Me too, coming of age in the 70's and 80's did not a appreciate TK and Chicago as much as I should have, and do now. They had it all, and TK's guitar playing in particular. They were an amazing (still are) and will have their place in music history. RIP, Terry.
I cried the day he left us😢 I remember exactly where I was when I heard the news. Terry was planning on going solo. He wanted to get away from the pop sound. He was after straight-up rock and roll. I often wonder of what great music would have come from Terry after Chicago.
He might be the best. Jimmy Hendrix was asked what it's like to be the best guitarist in the world and he replied, "I don't know. Go ask Terry Kath." That's good enough for me!
@musictattoo7 , Jimi has paid the same kind words and praise upon our boy Billy F. Gibbons as well, especially when Jimi took the Moving Sidewalks to a series of shows out east, in Jimi's stomping grounds! It was Billy F Gibbons who taught Jimi how to play slide guitar, with or without an actual slide!
Back when you went to a show and the artist left it all on the stage. You got a real band with all of the perfect imperfections. Chicago was incredible and teryy kath wa its soul.
His leads are just sublime and musical yet heavy. Of course we know he can shred it, but his touch and taste is just damn good. I wish I had made the effort to see Chicago live in the 70's. I was too aware of their more "pop-like" hits and so did not focus on what they were really about. From what I have watched online, they were one of America's greatest bands live.
Had the pleasure of seeing Chicago once in 69 at The Atlantic City Pop Fest & a few months into 1970 at The Shady Grove Music Fair in MD. At only 13 i had to go with my hippy sister & her friends & i had started to learn guitar in 68 . After seeing Terry i knew i had to take lessons of which i did for 5 years & i still play at the young age of 66. He was so amazing to see & hear & though i had been well into Jimi & Cream ,Iron Butterfly & the players of my parents generation like Charlie Christian & Django this was an eye & ear opener for a kid wanting to learn music. Terry had that impact that i still hold close to the vest. He was one of a kind & in the early days of this band he was the force to be reckoned with. We miss him dearly. As a Gibson lover in those days of early Chicago Terry was playing an SG Custom & his Les Paul Recording guitar along with a Firebird , Be it a Fender of a Gibson mattered little i quickly learned as he made both wail like the Devil himself !!! The man had it all .
@@paullevine1813 Good story. I idolized Mike Bloomfield and Jimi Hendrix (saw him live twice in 1968) and of course Peter Green, but also got to see live: BB King, Albert King, Freddie King, Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, Magic Sam -- all between 1967 and 1970. Bloomfield was the first one I saw live and, as the same for many teenagers then, he inspired me so much. However, I did not take up guitar as I was too into playing sports. Robben Ford is one great example of someone who got launched by seeing Bloomfield.
Great Stuff! Brings back Memories of our High School Days with the Music of Chicago, CTA. I believe I appreciated the Chicago Band and Terry Kath more as time passed. The music after he died, Not so Much! Your being a Chicago Area Co-Patriot of mine and of the Band Chicago, I added our Sub to your Channel and Thumbs UP! Thanks for Posting!
Guitar, Voice and Blues Chops all check, check and CHECK. Incredible body of work! What could have been well we all know it would have been beyond incredible. Rock On Heavenly Music Man
I cant believe im just getting turned on to Terry! Im 53 years old and have rocked out to all the bests, and still do, i have been a fan of the type of mucis that features driving bluse rock licks/ rock licks! I guess Chicago was on the mellower? side of rock for me to really get into? But WOW This guy!!! Im gonna have a fun next couple of days checking my man out. He seems to be one of the VERY FEW who are conected with the flow the ether dancin with the muse, Lol Wherever/however It is done? THEM and IT become the SAME at that moment, and sometimes us mortals can see from the outside what is taking place! It is Amazing to see, there are a lot of very talented guitarist out there. BUT, Very few of these guys who are like this! Only 3 others i have in mind that i have witnessed, and until today i really thought i had seen them all. Im a happy man right now
Listen to south california purples from carnegie Hall, liberation from the fillmore West, 25 or 6 to 4 live from Houston 77, better end soon live from tanglewood. He has a TON of stuff where hes just on fire.
Kath was always in search of the ultimate sound... tweaking his guitars, swapping out pickups, altering the neck, different string combos etc. He was a very talented innovative musician. Tragic how it ended for him. God has a great band in Heaven. Kath and Gary Moore on guitar Lynott on Bass & Vocals, Bonham on drums. Yeah, that would be awesome to hear.
I saw him the following Oct from this film. Back then you never saw much of these guys. Especially the men in this band. They really weren't shown on their LP'S much either. I saw "Chicago" in 74' at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh...they were great, Terry was great..and he looked great but when I saw him in 77'..he looked bad. Bloated..he gained a LOT of weight. You can't really blame these guys. Bands like "Chicago" practically lived on the road. In 77" the played just under 300 shows...200+ of those were consecutive one-nighters. Terry's brother said he sounded burned out but he always showed up and he always played and sang great and it was no different the night I saw him but you can see a huge difference even in this film compared to the way he looked 8 months later. Something was going on with him and he was doing a lot of drugs. You were great Terry!
If you want to learn about Chicago, assuming you don’t already know much about them, go find Chicago Live at Carnegie Hall! Lots of good, early tunes and lots of Terry Kath! That early period was the “best” of Chicago!
Kath was the "soul" of Chicago. When he died they were never the same.
He was one of the best guitarists of the rock guitar era and so, so underrated and overlooked.

RIP Terry Kath (January 31, 1946 - January 23, 1978), aged 31
You will always be remembered as a legend.
He will in my book
So much talent in one man!
The most underrated guitarist of all time...
Definitely one of the most underrated... along with frank Hannon of Tesla
@Chandler Luka Not really my business but if she finds out & she will i bet your history in less than 5 minutes . But i all honesty no i personally don't care ,but you asked.
For good reason. No different than any of the other blues wannabes.
Jimi Hendrix thought so too.
@Dustin, weak sauce.
Look at that dude go. Playing rhythm, playing lead, singing lead, and writing the song.
And he probably did all 4 at once :-) This is an amazing song - just stumbled on to his catalog.

It's 45 years ago today that Terry left us. There will never be another Terry. Thank god his music lives on even after all these years.
His sound was so exceptional that it didn't matter is he played a tele or strat, it rocked.
He was on a whole, completely different level of excellence.
Love me some Terry Kath. One of the all-time best rock guitarists.
He was something very special. He was caged in that band to me, we all know he could outlast Hendrix.

he is ok..but not the best !! Relaxt !
If you can say that after listening to Chicago's first 10 albums then maybe you should get a hearing check.
