I had a total hip replacement on my left hip done at HSS on June 26th. Tomorrow is 11 weeks. All I have is the slightest dull pain when I start walk. I go to the gym most mornings, PT twice a weak, cutting back to once. I also try to walk 3-5 miles a day and I’ve been riding my bike up to 30 miles. I am blessed so far because I know my situation can get worse at any time

I had total replacement in 2017. I'm in excruciating pain and the doctors will not give me anything but Tylenol. It has only gotten worse as time goes on. Physical therapy is a joke. Every movement makes it hurt. Keep moving it, I'm told. Well, I do and I spend the next 2 days barely able to move. I fear I am headed to using a wheelchair. I am worse off, tremendously, than I was before surgery. Worse mistake I've ever made. The surgeon broke one of the only two screws he put the cup in with but insisted that my surgery was 'perfect'. Finally my primary care dr looked at the x-rays and she is the one that discovered the broken screw with left the cup rattling around in my pelvis. I cried because one, I now had physical evidence that I really was in pain and two, I knew I'd have to have another surgery. Almost 5 years later and I am still having procedures to remove the tremendous amount of scar tissue the quack surgeon left in my hip.

@@KimberlyLetsGo Aw, your story is heartbreaking. I don’t mean that in a patronizing way. I feel ya! I’m three weeks post op THR. I’m still experiencing intense pain. I’m currently still taking narcotics. Oxycodone. This is my third refill. I thought that they’d cut me off after two weeks. But, the pain hasn’t subsided enough to use celebrex solely. I thought that it couldn’t hurt to call and ask. You’re right about it being a brutal surgery. Their main surgical tools are a hammer and saws, so, yeah, hurts like F! And, this is a forever surgical procedure. Cannot put your original parts back in. Truly horrifying that a procedure designed to make life/mobility better has made it worse. Seems like your only recourse is for a qualified orthopedic surgeon to redo it. Get legal advice too. They botched it badly. I cannot even consider reopening my incision for a revision. Aaah! I'm 4 months post surgery for a hip replacement following a bike accident. I'm still getting extreme pain in my hip flexors and lateral bursa, but an ultrasound scan picked nothing up. Complete rest of the joint for the last two weeks has seen no improvement. My consultant won't recommend an MRI for another 3 months, it's so frustrating, as I know another 3 months of soft tissue work is very unlikely to help (four months of it so far has not touched it).

Another possible source of pain is loosening of the implant. I had a THR 2 1/2 years ago, and ended up having as much or more pain than before the surgery. I went to another surgeon who specializes in revisions. He did a radioactive dye test and showed me that the original implant was too small, and it had loosened over 2 years. So....now I'm currently recovering from the revision surgery. The fun part is, my other hip needs to be replaced in December! Pretty great....Two hips - three hip replacements....😬

@@richardbarton7 No, don't lose hope. I think almost all THR's result in improved conditions, with the pain being removed or at least better than prior to surgery. If you are still hurting, maybe get a second opinion from another orthopedic surgeon who specializes in revisions. They can do X-rays and radioactive scans to determine what the problem is. Keep moving....Good luck!

Well it's taking me over 6 months and less painful and to be able to lay on that side, but it is getting better.
Not everybody gets 100% pain after THR.
Like I said it's kind of hit and miss.
Some people are lucky and have no pain after their surgery and can go back to normal activity and then there's other people like me and others where it took longer and then there's some I heard that they never get free of pain 100%.

All too easy within the indoctrinated medical field to step apart from discovering solutions, referring patients to pain management groups. We patients are our very best advocates....perhaps a decade of going back to school may result in finding a cure for our issues?

I had not needed it 2 weeks ago, but I seem to have more pain and difficulty with walking, for the past week. I know it's a very successful procedure, but I am anxious there is no infection present. I had a follow up appointment with the surgeon August 18th, he looked at me and said 'you are fine'. Didn't do an X-ray, didn't suggest that I would walk a few steps in order to estimate gait, posture, strength, limping etc. The follow up appointment lasted 7 minutes. Am concerned.

Find another doctor, immediately! It’s a procedure that should have improvements in pain in regular intervals. It most definitely should NOT be getting worse. I know the type of doctors you’re talking about. Seems as though patient care has become ‘Patient non care’ in the medical field. They’ve lost their patience with patients. Dunno if it’s covid burnout for them or what. I myself have had two surgeries this year alone. Both were made worse by the medical personnel. Not the procedure itself. My THR was done on August 17th of this year. The hospital gave me a nasty case of phlebitis. Superficial vein clots and swelling due to poor IV placement. It’s just now resolving itself. Hope that you find someone that can help you. Sending 🙏❤

After lumbar fusion surgery a nurse jammed my leg into my pelvis so hard that she actually broke my hip. But everyone just assumed this "new" pain had something to do with the back surgery. I was in severe pain for a year and getting no help from MDs (other than pain meds) so I finally went to see my chiro. He discovered my pelvis was twisted and stuck (that's how hard she jammed my leg!). He adjusted my pelvis and the pain dropped from a 10 to a 5 instantly. Then I went out of town to see a different MD and finally got xrays and an MRI to discover the rest of the damage. I'm getting a total hip replacement in January.

@@julianolucca4202 I'm doing much better, it has been roughly 6 months now. I still have some pain in the replaced side and some pain in my hip that has not been replaced. Prior to my surgery my left hip never bothered me. I also have some back pain but I think that's another problem. Hang in there it takes time. I have been back to working a physical job and I now am glad I had the surgery. Best of luck to you.

Nope. If you have infection in the bone it will be easily diagnosed and require additional surgeries!
