Nice!!! Nickel metal Hydride is actually an improvement over the old Nickel Cadmiums, or Ni-Cads, some people called them.... Tell me you are old, without telling me you are old.... Okay, I owned that tool. It was very nice, and desirable when new. I had that, and a 7.2 volt cordless drill-screwdriver type tool. Both were super nice. I have been a Makita fanboy ever since. I was pretty young then... those were really cool tools back then... Our minds were blown wide open when Makita came out with battery powered tools that really worked, and provided legitimate power & performance for real work.... Great job on this one!
good restoration. nimh batteries are actually very good. One problem is cell imbalance. One way to correct the imbalance is to solder a 1k ohm shunt resistor across all the cells to be permanently balanced at 1.2 milliamps. the information is from the internet old satellites that operated with nickel batteries.
Perfect refurbishing of both the power tool its self and the battery as well. And since you did rebuild everything, you now have a tool that will last for years. I too enjoy rebuilding such power tools, but usually I buy used DeWalt types that are in need of repair and repair them so all my tools use the same battery types and chargers... Thumbs Up!
These tools never become obsolete as long as someone restores or retrofits them. Li-ion conversion with USB charge connection installed would be peace of cake on these tools.
I bought 2 of the 9000 series drills a few years back at a flea market. Just needed to wire brush the contacts and get replacement battery packs (eBay $12 each). Love them and been using them for 2 or 3 years now with zero problems. Great tools!
It's interesting to see the evolution of power tools, and clean and well thought out the designs were at the start. Now they all must have clunky external batteries, rubber grips that fail quickly, and are required to look like a ray gun that was taken off a space ship. Great job on this restoration, you did that beautiful tool justice!

I did a similar job with a DEWALT nickel-cadmium screwdriver. Unfortunately, the new batteries bought on Aliexpress turned out to be of poor quality. 😞 I didn’t try again, I bought a new screwdriver with lithium batteries. 🙂 You did a good job, Like.
You could try with old laptop batteries. Many cells from them are still 90% of their original capacity. All you need is Liitokala or similar battery charger/tester costing about 20€ and sort out the bad cells. There are lots of videos about it, been doing this for years.
@@Teknopottu + charging controller, preferably balancing. Lithium 18650 have a different size, they did not fit well in the battery case, I was too lazy to redo it 🙂
They make tools of all sorts and colours here in the UK although like 90% of their tools are teal blue you still see either red, orange or green in rare cases BUT in Japan Makita's home country they have all sorts of colours. if you look for Japanese imports of Makita tools you can easily find black/white/grey/yellow/purple/orange etc...
Nice repair. I hope the Ni-mh batteries last. I bought some from China and they were useless. The bush on the anvil nose may be designed to soak up oil. If it is you need to leave it in an oil bath over night before fitting it.
