I got rid of that car tho bc VW has severely cheaped out on the N American MQB cars. It had way too many issues for a $34k brand new car. Their power delivery is not tuned like this, or other luxury competitors, it is very sporty and track focused. Also, the other guy commenting up top - Mk8 Golf R is underrated but is not at 420hp in the N American market. It's about 375hp as proven by dyno tests being done. Good video but a couple things. I’ve own this car and figured out how to get the best from it. TC must be off, sport mode on, brake boost to 2500 rpm. I believe awd launches are much harder on the transmission than for fwd launches. This car was not made for races or the drag strip so maybe Mazda tuned it to not allow for hard launches.
Maybe at launch, since the Mazda seemed to bog down before taking off. Other than that, it's just put your foot to the mat and let the car do the rest.
They're literally driving in a straight line in automatic cars. What skills are you referring to? The factors here were the way manufacturers rate their horsepower numbers (VW underrates, Mazda Overrates) as well as the transmission types (DSG vs Automatic).

Next to using premium gas and the sport mode, what about the slight delay you get from the auto handbrake? I'm seeing a lot of criticism of the Mazda's transmission, but I think Mazda is happy where they're at to be honest-- if they were focused on straight line speed, then that 320lb-ft of torque would leave plenty of room for tuning to do so. That said, their upcoming inline six platform is getting an 8 speed, but it will still be in a traditional torque converter configuration. I agree that if they continue to move upmarket while still betting on gasoline engines, they'll eventually have to employ a dual clutch, but in their current financial situation, I don't know how feasible that is without borrowing from another company.
A lot of what they are doing is for reliability. I just bought a Cx-30 Premium Plus turbo and and exhaust and some bigger tires and PREMIUM gas would make this car a low 5 to mid 5 car. They already have one of these hitting 13.9 in the quarter and it is bone stock--like 5,6 to 60 and they just floored it--had they powerbrake dit would have been quicker.I also sold a 2020 AWD Stinger GT 3.3TT and ran a 4.2 to 60 and 12.7 in the quarter and have my videos on here. The cx 30 has a tall 2nd gear and the front tires break loose--but with some light mods you can get this quicker and keep it under warranty.Sadly none of these tests are valid cause you have no clue to what gas was used.I have 93 and 94 octane near me and e85 is also at the same station--i plan on putting 94 in it next tank--just bought mine and finally put a tank of 93 in it and it runs way better--I can easily get on the HWY at triple digit speeds with no problem.

What a lot of automotive reviewers don't realize is that the MK7 GTI has substantially more power than VW advertises. That GTI is making roughly 220WHP and 270WTQ. The Mazda3 never had a chance.
Both cars should have been filled from empty with top factory specified octane.. Guessing doesn't cut it. If the Mazda is run on 87 rather than 93, it costs it .3 to .4 seconds 0-60, probably the same with the GTI. With it's big torque advantage and awd, the Mazda should have a huge advantage out of the hole. I have noticed in other videos as well that it seems to launch sluggishly. I think for some reason the factory has electronically limited power at launch or maybe the torque converter is too tight, not allowing the engine enough revs to reach a good point on the hp curve at that critical launch point. That is what it sounds like. Mazda itself has stated it is not interested in 0-60 times. Maybe they should be, if they want to sell to people interested in performance.

The DSG transmission in VW GTI will win every time because the quickest shift of the transmission. I owned the 2015 Mark7 GTI Autobahn and I know this car well. The Kia Forte with 1.6 liter Turbo equipped with DGS is the second best and cheaper.
You sound like the DSG is the only part of the drive train that makes a difference. I agree that the DSG is superior from a performance standpoint to a regular automatic transmission, but even a quick shifting DSG isn't going to compensate for an engine that is short on power because the engine plays an even bigger role in a drag race than the type of transmission. The engine in the Golf is widely believed to be under rated for the power it makes, and I seriously doubt that the Kia Forte with a turbo engine rated at 201 HP would win in a drag race against this turbo Mazda 3, regardless of the Forte having a DSG. As one example of the role an engine plays in performance, I drive a 10 year old 4100 pound Hyundai Genesis Sedan with a 4.6L engine and even with a non-performance oriented 6 speed automatic transmission it will run 0-60 in the low to mid 5 second range, and it would win a drag race with any of these DSG equipped vehicles mentioned.
I hope Mazda ups there game in performance after watching clips like these...i think it's still a decent looking ride I'm sure it probably has some handles being a mazda.

I fully agree with you that the DSG mae the difference in the drag race above. With 7 gears, the DSG in the Golf has a lower ratio 1st gear than the Mazda, which would account for the front drive Golf jumping out in front of the Mazda from a standing start, and the extra gear in the DSG would also help keep the engine in the power band better than the 6 gears in the Mazda.

In all honesty they seem like a really good choice for a sub $35k car due to the quality of the interior and the added hp. The cars are as luxurious as each other with regards to features etc and the golf is more affordable. it starts at $28k (dsg is like 30k) and the mazda is $33k. also if you drive a golf gti you see the powerband isnt just punchy and sporty. @@Axelandy55 I just owned a 2019 Mk7 GLi Autobahn ( sedan GTi ) and the powerband was extremely punchy. I got rid of that car tho bc VW has severely cheaped out on the N American MQB cars. It had way too many issues for a $34k brand new car.
I understand that turning off TC can help give the 3 more power since TC bogs it down for it to work. Next to using premium gas and the sport mode, what about the slight delay you get from the auto handbrake? I tested a Mazda 3 turbo recently and noticed the slight bump you get when you’re taking off from a complete stop. I didn’t get the chance to check/ask if the auto HB can be turned off.
@@khronin Yeah, I really like how long second gear is on my NA 2.5L Mazda3-- it makes it a very usable gear to stay in through corners. Idk it's the same on your turbo cx-30, but in my experience when you're flooring it 2nd takes you just past 60 and then 3rd is good for 85. Is this what you find too?
@@laylahassomethingtosay I have not even floored mine--but I have gone over 100 plus.I just got mine and want to make sure it is running premium beofre I really wind it out.
@@khronin Totally understand-- I took the 600 mile break in period on mine pretty seriously and never took it above 3500rpm at first😅
DSG 👌♥️
they have similar crank hp but wheel hp is way higher in the gti. the dsg has less drivetrain loss than a torque converter and can shift way faster than a normal auto. also whp is higher because powering 4 wheels produces even further loss
The MZ3 also fights a relatively tall (lower numerically) final-drive ratio of 3.23:1, which keeps it calm for cruising but costs it in acceleration times. And as many know, the Mazda is not a high RPM screamer but a mid RPM torque monster.
The launch in that mazda is terrible, no wonder it lost.
Needs a stick shift! Let's see it Mazda!
just replace the driver
Estáis comparando una versión Performace con una de calle, enserio, qué tornillo habéis perdido? Estos dos vehículos no son rivales
That gearbox is something else. Mazda needs to upgrade theirs fast.
I completely agree, I'm happy that Mazda stays away from CVTs but they could really use a nicely geared dual clutch.
@@burtonboarder503 Mazda is one of the most reliable car manufacturers. And the reason is, they just build thing which are doin their job well but are far away from beeing maxed out. They dont want to compete with others in things like acceleration, they built cars, which are just very good to drive, but not to race. Its Mazdas own way and for me its very good. They do their own thing.
What fuel was Mazda using for this race?
Premium
Enseñen a arrancar a él del. Mazda 3
@@mbenton6 somebody's butthurt. Its a press car, Mazda definitely put premium in it for press review.
What a lot of automotive reviewers don't realize is that the MK7 GTI has substantially more power than VW advertises. That GTI is making roughly 220WHP and 270WTQ. The Mazda3 never had a chance.
my mk7 dyno'd 240whp stock on a mustang dyno
@@scottwurzbacher7641 yep my car is a 2021 GLI Autobahn edition, and I have seen people who are 250whp and 290ftlbs
They were filled with premium:)
@@SamCarLegion
" I believe it is on premium since it is an OEM car which they use premium. Even it wasn’t the mazda still makes 227 on regular."
Sounds like an assumption to me, not a fact. What is an "OEM"? Oh. googled it. Original Equipment Manufacturer. So? I would assume (sorry, me assuming now), it is a press car and the last tank of gas was pumped in by a tester or dealer protecting their own wallet.
@@chawpino8320 well no one can guarantee that but I do believe that they use premium.
Who does a test and “feels” it has premium. The last journalist def cheaper out. Throttle house showed it can kill a Golf R on launch.
@@Robert-lu3rz Yeah, this test is bogus. What the hell does OEM even mean in this context? Mazda isn't shipping vehicles with a full tank of gas, lol. My CX-50 TPP was filled with 87 when I took delivery, not even the dealers use premium fuel and you'd think they'd have a vested interest in customers experiencing what the car is capable of. Nobody is spending money to put 91 or 93 in a vehicle that doesn't belong to them, lol. The guy responding for this channel is naive at best, delusional at worst.
the mazda 3 is certainly faster than the gti the only minus point is that the mazda 3 weighs more so that gti comes back at a long distance
It’s not just about the weight of the cars. DSG is just hard to beat
Its isn't faster though, it didnt even have it off the line.
@@turdzilla1675 right ..🤣🤣
For a little hatchback with 250hp, 320 lb of torque and all-wheel drive, seemed like he was giving a quarter throttle off the line. I guess that's how they drive in Quebec
Homie can’t drive an automatic. Every other video the Mazda3 beats the GTI in including the Subaru WRX 🤷🏻♂️
Nah, the Mazda is slower, the Gti wasn't even using launch control. Also it takes zero skill to drive an automatic.
@@turdzilla1675 "Also it takes zero skill to drive an automatic." Totally wrong. You can get dramatically different results in a race using different launch methods.
I agree that the Mazda launch looked bad, but the GTI pulled the Mazda even from a roll, so it wasn't all driver related. The extra gear and quick shifting capabilities of the DSG probably made the difference in this race, not to mention that the GTI is most likely underrated for power.
No brake boost?
They should first learn how to accelerate the cars for these kinds of tests. There are specific techniques. 😉
Mazda not running high octane. GTI is a slower car.
Definitely needs driver mod 😄
Yeah it needs premium
Volkswagen makes great cars, I've got one ten years no problems but I must say I take ate of my car. Mk4 r32

If I had to guess I would say the dsg transmission is what gives the gti the edge. Ive heard the automatic in the mazda is quite average. Not bad but not exceptional either.
The Mazda 3 looks simply much more better *.*
is the mazda with 98 ?
Come in Europe, we'll give you a manual transmission for the mazda 3 and you'll give us the turbo ; )
We have manual transmissions, just not for the AWD version. Mazda doesn't make any manual AWDs anywhere
@@TheRealSteve42 We do have the choice in Europe, manual or automatic transmission for the AWD. But no Turbo, too much taxes due to Co2 emissions.
@@adrianooo7990 without turbo it's only a sluggish hatch
The Mazda 3 turbo was never meant to be ultra fast :/ the gti r line and r variations of the golf are all speccd to perform significantly harder when Mazda actually makes a hot hatch competitor you should re race
You have to admit mazda did pretty well against one of the hot hatch legends in all honesty. Mazda is just now in the swing of their rebrand. I expect great things to come.
You use wrong Mazda. Even old BL Mazda 3 MPS can ruin GTI in every situation
An older 2009 GTI with manual transmission, sure. However this generation GTI in the video(especially with DSG) would obliterate the Mazdaspeed 3.
As matter of personal taste, I found more sexy and classy the Mazda 3 Turbo AWD
Nahhh mazda it's all plástic and ugly with full Boze speakers GTI is fancy and sport
They are starting without launching the vehicle's. What's the point of 4wd if you don't launch it ?
Aún sin ver él vídeo me daba la impresión de que era más rápido el Golf de VW y lo es!

with the rolling start, 323 won due to higher torque. When comes to straight line-contineous, gti is quicker due to dsg and lighter car.
The gti comes back and even overtakes after a few meters, maybe the golf needs to downshift while the Mazda is still in lower gear
I'd take the GTI any day.
Fantastic car
They don't want to be a kids brand anymore. It simply isn't made to win races. It's made to be comfortable but fun to drive still.
With enough demand hopefully they would supply...im sure if they had the capital like some other companies it would be in fruition. I understand that they want to be more of a luxury vehicle competing w/ their predecessors...however I believe that their cars are not ment to be 0-60 vehicles but more of a balanced drivers car that has the confidents in handling...i think its more exciting to drive a slow car fast than to drive a fast car slow. Turbo 🐌
@@copperkeyracing6167 : 100% agree with you on this. I own the Premium Plus 3 Turbo in Polymetal Grey. It's seriously quick, but I can tell they held back on making it an absolute Beast.
Depending on the sales of this variant, I can see them doing a 3 Turbo 2.0 in 2-3 years time.
@@ayotundealele1465 What would be the point of Mazda offering a 2.0 Turbo that would likely produce less power than their current 2.5 Turbo? What vehicle would they put that in, and what would be the purpose? In 2-3 years time, I full expect most vehicle manufacturers to start transitioning to EVs. Most already have some EVs in production, but they're just getting started. Mazda seems to be lagging in the EV department, but they'll likely get on the bandwagon before too much longer.
VW's hp numbers are usually close to hp at the wheels so in reality these cars are making about the same power.
