@Laura Kampf I'm concerned about the longevity of the leather hinge while the cupboard lid is not being supported from underneath. Even if the glue holds, the leather will likely rip under someone's weight. (I'm 1.85m & 130-odd kgs and would never sit on there, that's for sure.) It wasn't clear in the video if this lid has any support. Cheers from Australia.
@@middomaker heh! Pretty sure she'll be double checking this by now. A bunch of us have expressed the same worry in other comments. Probably an easy fix with the addition of a lip of some kind to transfer weight at the back to the frame if that wasn't already part of the design we just couldn't see. 👍
Might want to add some support on the swinging side of the hinge, since sitting on the middle of the bench will apply a lot of force to the glued leather.
@@JoshuaRes There is only support on the back edge at the two far ends. There is no support in the middle, other than the leather itself.. She doesn't need to add much, just a block that will catch the hinged side roughly in the middle. Just bolt it to the back wall, and have it stick out far enough to catch the hinged lid by 3/4" or so. That way it won't impact putting things in, or taking them out.
Hey Laura! I have a sugestion to preserve your flooring. What about placing plywood strips with felt on the bottom as slides on the bottom of the boxes? You could even use the holes that are already there to fixate the strips! I believe you have the clearance for it still.
I think they even make stick on felt pads, or she could make them, but you wouldn’t even need the plywood. Just felt right on the bottom of the 4 corners or along the edges might work.
@@Sara-xk1ns given the width of the edges of the boxes, I believe it might not be that sturdy and it might peel off. Also, since the bottom is recessed from the floor, the plywood would bridge the gap and also could give a cool floating look to the boxes
I've used felt pads on furniture. They catch dog hair that doesn't get sucked up by the vacuum. They also fall off too soon to be worthwhile. The leftover leather stuck onto the whole round of the bottom edges - minus corners for ease of construction - would work with design consistency and be easy maintenance. Or the same runner/ball-bearing things used on the underbed unit.
Exactly what I was thinking of! There are many ways it can be solved but one thing is for certain, metals - especially soft ones will stain the floor very quickly.
Felix, the editing on this is superb. The way the music matches the filing at 8:04… *chefs kiss*. Obviously I love watching what Laura creates but the editing makes it even more of a joy!

But that's disingenuous and sets unrealistic expectations for anyone who tries to do the same. Laura's approach leaves space for changing your mind and embracing the mistakes rather than make it look like you're a genius craftsperson.

It's not hoarding if you can find a use for it. I love that you used the aluminum boxes and leather in this project. The blending of wood, metal, artifical and natural finishes makes this so beautiful.
And also, I love that she reuses stuff. That aluminum would need a lot of energy and water to be recycled. We have to aim to reuse first and foremost, and then recycle.
It never is hoarding - "hoarding" is a concept uninspired, uncreative catalogue-consumerists subdue themselves to, who waste away their precious day-time to an employer, who feel "forced" to be living someplace in a city or town cramped like laying hens, and then are tricked into just buying stuff because they have no "hoarded" crap anywhere they could use as a quarry for their creative ideas, who have hardly any useful tools to form/rearrange said hoarded crap, and who have of course no space whatsoever to build stuff without "disturbing" their fellow laying hens left and right with their creativity and craftsmanship.

Hard to see in the video, but under your hinged bench is there enough of a cleat on the wall to support the opening lid in the back when closed? If not, a weight (possibly a well placed dog paw😋) could make the top flex and put strain on your hinge. Simple enough to add a strip of wood to support both the fixed part of the top and the opening side when closed and acting like a seat, but better to do sooner than later when the leather gets damaged.
what i love about your channel. most other maturing diy channels evolve to use somewhat industrial production methods that are simply not approachable for viewers. of course you have all kinds of high end equipment. but your process of how to arrive at a finished product stays relatable.
Yes! Laura uses lots of hand tools and simple methods, which only indicate her mad skills. My heart jumped for joy when she pulled out that edge trimmer/beveler.

In my 'design lectures' I tell people, "ideas are like viruses, once you contract one, they are very hard to get rid of!". Meaning gather all the facts, constraints (time, money, space, material, etc), before you try to conceive an idea. You just proved that point yourself :).
I think you need to put in a another piece of wood to the back to support the platform that is now hanging on by the leather hinge and only supported properly at the sides. Otherwise it's not strong enough to sit on and the leather will eventually start delaminating there.
Great minds and all that, it looks great and I had visions of the leather tearing in the middle of the bench when someone sat on it without some sort of support underneath the back of the board/door which would be a shame.
The music choices and the sound design on this video are outstanding! The tempo of the music matching the cadence of Laura's manual sanding, the key of later music matching the pitch of the power sander... Subtle, but beautiful touches! The new area looks very cozy! When creating the clothes storage consider retractable arms. I would create a option to dry wet clothes buy the stove. It would also allow you to not have to rummage around in the crate space to find what you want.
It is easy to over complicate but not always easy to come up with a simple solution to a problem, congratulations on absolutely rocking this one, don't forget to add a bit of support for the back edge of the seating area as others have mentioed, nice job over all.
I knew you would realize that the closet needed to be in that corner! Damp clothes will get dry next to the fire! The boxes for storage, awesome! the leather hinge was a masterful idea. Just one thing more, floating shelves for the plants!
Looking Good! The organic hinge is a nice thought but it really depends on how long you want to live with it? A piano hinge under the leather will stand up to multiple stress situations that leather cannot. It will insure the pristine quality and won't be seen under the leather. someone mentioned pads for the boxes . Will keep your floor in good shape over time? Oh yeah please use safety glasses . As a designer it's your eyes are your most important tool?
I used a scrap piece of leather to make a handle for an outdoor gate. I thought it would last maybe one year. After 2.5 years of Nevada high desert wind, rain, sun, snow etc it's still working great. I think your indoor leather hinge will work great and last a long time.

That bench is absolutely fantastic! The fasteners for the leather hinge really is a nice contrasting touch. Many, many years ago I worked with a furniture designer. He didn't design furniture on paper. Instead, he used 2x4's, the bandsaw and a glue gun. He "sketched" his designs in 3-D and it was amazing to watch a new chair come to life in this way. He'd chop the wood into rough shapes, hot-glue them together, stand back and evalulate, knock it apart and add bits or remove bits until he had the shape he was dreaming of. And then we'd figure out how to turn this free-form prototype into a finished chair. Which is to say that I totally get your process of sketching out your designs using the metal boxes for this project.
You could hollow out the 3-tall ones for a short closet-type storage area, door optional! This came out SO good!!! And I love to see the rainbow everywhere!

Seriously the blends of materials,the joins and light, balance of materials and proportions.Beautiful, healthy plants.Cut a small piece of aloe open it and apply to cut off ? portion of finger.will help it heal.Bad skin fungus going around ( world wide) You have a artist eye for colors.Your sketches are valid,as they are the outer form of what the inner sense expounds on,to capture all you desire. Good teamwork you all.She must wear you out with all the back and forth to workshop,an outdoor pile, floating on air etc
I love your thinking process! The puzzling through challenges on the fly is clearly a big part of the fun for you. And then, you get to be reminded of that experience every time you see or touch the results of your thinking and doing. Fantastic and so enjoyable to see. You and Felix are so good at presenting all of it, too!
Love my favorite material (leather) to be used here and to be a hinge! I feel that you might need to put a cross-bar in the middle of the box or have another member to go along the wall where the hinge is to hold the hinged section as leather will not be enough over long term as plywood flexes and leather + glue will start detaching from the lid. And special thank you for showing the reality of your design process - I am not the sketcher, but the planner and 3D over-modeller and it doesn't always translate and becomes too constraining on the result when you go to make it.
Process: Start from what you know and use items that are already constructed that you can manipulate and develop your design around them. Wonderful storage those aluminum boxes! Awesome build!

I don't have a strong enough ability to visualize in my head so this is relatable. I realized this recently and it's helping my creative work. As a maker, I am more Additive than Subtractive. Once something has begun to take shape, I can refine and build upon my initial concept.
I love it! I think it turned out fantastic! Friendly reminder to periodically condition the leather, particularly around the hinge area. Especially since you're going to be periodically exposing it to the elements by having the window open. I still can't believe how perfectly it all fit together!
At 8:02 the sanding is so perfectly in sync with the music, it was soooo satisfaying !! And of course the final result is AMAZING, I love leather, and the brass detail is so perfect
People facing a wall never stand at ceilings angle; leaning against a wall still doesn't occupy wall-ceiling interfaces: so I suggest overhead compartments like Jets Boats and Rvs, or a cedar-shelf-360 at the ceiling; a motorized track to bring everything around.
The leather hinge idea and execution was amazing. I do wonder why you chose to screw the static part of the hinge down from the top rather than from the under side and have the hinge invisible. The choice of the brass screws with the cup washers works really well. Another amazing build. Looking forward to seeing the next part.
I was thinking he same, but the support is on edge and very thick. You would need a really long screw or a counterbored hole. Screwing from the top is just easier.

That leather is a great choice for a "for-now" hinge. Long-term, it will need to be switched out with a mechanical hinge; since the leather will start to crack and mark at the bend point (might not matter once the full-size house is complete). As some others have pointed out, there will also need to be support added at the hinge site to prevent future bowing of the wood. I Love the bench! I love how excited you are to have it! 😀

Just one thing, I think you may need some additional support for the leather hinge, I can see that either unsticking or stretching/cracking or splitting nder use.. some reinforcement perhaps might be needed to support the leather joint? (Just an idea) Perhaps even retro fit a piano hinge countersunk (if possible) just below the surface of the wood underneath the leather to "do the work" but covered/hidden by the leather for the same esthetics? This is my favorite way of prototyping. I can rarely envision something in paper the way i can with analogue objects that can demonstrate the final design
Don't worry Laura I can't draw well either but when I don't want to commit to a 3D design it's great for getting out ideas. I take inspiration from an architect here on TH-cam, 30x40 Design Workshop, both with sketches but also scale models. I think the bench turned out great and it's a big inspiration to my own tiny house design :)

I love the metal storage boxes. If you stood the two boxes used as a back rest up on end and fixed them together with a dowel rod you could have a narrow standing closet for your hanging items. You could repeat the same concept by the front door and make a cut out to access the light switches and electrical plugs. Maybe even put a louvered door on the front to make it decorative and conceal contents.
Love how you two integrate last week's tool cabinet so smoothly! It really all comes together now... So much fun to watch! By the way: My thoughts exactly with the "porch" outside the window! - When you first sat down on the sill... Makes so much sense! 💪 Is that gonna be the next project?
Can totally relate to building the concept in 3D and then living with it for a bit before committing. A sketch is great for brainstorming and early inspiration but you never know how it feels until you build it.
Laura, please make lids for your new aluminium boxes. Maybe just from ply but covered with leather / lineoleum, alternating. Would be super useful and also be a solution for the stack / plant platform.

At 23:00 it looks like the edge of the hatch slides slightly towards the wall while closing and therefore should be supported by the frame

Great minds and all that, it looks great and I had visions of the leather tearing in the middle of the bench when someone sat on it without some sort of support underneath the back of the board/door which would be a shame.
After seeing the paw print, I see new a new merch opportunity, clear round sticker with Smudo’s print on it, “Smudo Approved” 🙃

The new area looks very cozy! When creating the clothes storage consider retractable arms. I would create a option to dry wet clothes buy the stove. It would also allow you to not have to rummage around in the crate space to find what you want.
I am not a carpenter by any means, but I thought the whole thing turned out amazing. A woman and her tools!! Awesome!
It is easy to over complicate but not always easy to come up with a simple solution to a problem, congratulations on absolutely rocking this one, don't forget to add a bit of support for the back edge of the seating area as others have mentioed, nice job over all.

I knew you would realize that the closet needed to be in that corner! Damp clothes will get dry next to the fire! The boxes for storage, awesome! the leather hinge was a masterful idea. Just one thing more, floating shelves for the plants!

Looking Good! The organic hinge is a nice thought but it really depends on how long you want to live with it? A piano hinge under the leather will stand up to multiple stress situations that leather cannot. It will insure the pristine quality and won't be seen under the leather. someone mentioned pads for the boxes . Will keep your floor in good shape over time? Oh yeah please use safety glasses . As a designer it's your eyes are your most important tool?
I used a scrap piece of leather to make a handle for an outdoor gate. I thought it would last maybe one year. After 2.5 years of Nevada high desert wind, rain, sun, snow etc it's still working great. I think your indoor leather hinge will work great and last a long time.

That bench is absolutely fantastic! The fasteners for the leather hinge really is a nice contrasting touch.
Many, many years ago I worked with a furniture designer. He didn't design furniture on paper. Instead, he used 2x4's, the bandsaw and a glue gun. He "sketched" his designs in 3-D and it was amazing to watch a new chair come to life in this way. He'd chop the wood into rough shapes, hot-glue them together, stand back and evalulate, knock it apart and add bits or remove bits until he had the shape he was dreaming of. And then we'd figure out how to turn this free-form prototype into a finished chair.
Which is to say that I totally get your process of sketching out your designs using the metal boxes for this project.
You could hollow out the 3-tall ones for a short closet-type storage area, door optional!

I did not see Smudo's "gaze out the window of approval ". Seriously the blends of materials,the joins and light, balance of materials and proportions.Beautiful, healthy plants.Cut a small piece of aloe open it and apply to cut off ? portion of finger.will help it heal.Bad skin fungus going around ( world wide) You have a artist eye for colors.Your sketches are valid,as they are the outer form of what the inner sense expounds on,to capture all you desire.

I love your thinking process! The puzzling through challenges on the fly is clearly a big part of the fun for you. And then, you get to be reminded of that experience every time you see or touch the results of your thinking and doing. Fantastic and so enjoyable to see. You and Felix are so good at presenting all of it, too!

Love my favorite material (leather) to be used here and to be a hinge!
I feel that you might need to put a cross-bar in the middle of the box or have another member to go along the wall where the hinge is to hold the hinged section as leather will not be enough over long term as plywood flexes and leather + glue will start detaching from the lid.
And special thank you for showing the reality of your design process - I am not the sketcher, but the planner and 3D over-modeller and it doesn't always translate and becomes too constraining on the result when you go to make it.
Process: Start from what you know and use items that are already constructed that you can manipulate and develop your design around them. Wonderful storage those aluminum boxes! Awesome build!
Be sure to keep the leather well oiled so it doesn't end up cracking. Very nice job!

I don't have a strong enough ability to visualize in my head so this is relatable. I realized this recently and it's helping my creative work. As a maker, I am more Additive than Subtractive. Once something has begun to take shape, I can refine and build upon my initial concept.

I love it! I think it turned out fantastic! Friendly reminder to periodically condition the leather, particularly around the hinge area. Especially since you're going to be periodically exposing it to the elements by having the window open. I still can't believe how perfectly it all fit together!
At 8:02 the sanding is so perfectly in sync with the music, it was soooo satisfaying !! And of course the final result is AMAZING, I love leather, and the brass detail is so perfect

People facing a wall never stand at ceilings angle; leaning against a wall still doesn't occupy wall-ceiling interfaces: so I suggest overhead compartments like Jets Boats and Rvs, or a cedar-shelf-360 at the ceiling; a motorized track to bring everything around.
The leather hinge idea and execution was amazing. I do wonder why you chose to screw the static part of the hinge down from the top rather than from the under side and have the hinge invisible. The choice of the brass screws with the cup washers works really well. Another amazing build. Looking forward to seeing the next part.

I was thinking he same, but the support is on edge and very thick. You would need a really long screw or a counterbored hole. Screwing from the top is just easier.
My idea was, first to screw and then to glue. But with the brass screws it might be a decorative element.

Love how your tiny house is coming together! I finally got around to crossing something off my spring to do list. I built a picnic bench to go in a part of my back garden. I am looking forward to enjoying it this summer.
That leather is a great choice for a "for-now" hinge. Long-term, it will need to be switched out with a mechanical hinge; since the leather will start to crack and mark at the bend point (might not matter once the full-size house is complete). As some others have pointed out, there will also need to be support added at the hinge site to prevent future bowing of the wood. I Love the bench! I love how excited you are to have it! 😀

I loved watching your process in this video! I agree that it is best to live in/with a space for awhile before committing to a final version. The mix of materials you chose is so nice and that leather hinge is *chef's kiss.* Curious what those aluminum bins were originally designed for; I'm obsessed with them too now!
Just one thing, I think you may need some additional support for the leather hinge, I can see that either unsticking or stretching/cracking or splitting nder use.. some reinforcement perhaps might be needed to support the leather joint? (Just an idea)
Perhaps even retro fit a piano hinge countersunk (if possible) just below the surface of the wood underneath the leather to "do the work" but covered/hidden by the leather for the same esthetics?

This is my favorite way of prototyping. I can rarely envision something in paper the way i can with analogue objects that can demonstrate the final design

Don't worry Laura I can't draw well either but when I don't want to commit to a 3D design it's great for getting out ideas. I take inspiration from an architect here on TH-cam, 30x40 Design Workshop, both with sketches but also scale models. I think the bench turned out great and it's a big inspiration to my own tiny house design :)

I love the metal storage boxes. If you stood the two boxes used as a back rest up on end and fixed them together with a dowel rod you could have a narrow standing closet for your hanging items. You could repeat the same concept by the front door and make a cut out to access the light switches and electrical plugs. Maybe even put a louvered door on the front to make it decorative and conceal contents.
Love how you two integrate last week's tool cabinet so smoothly! It really all comes together now... So much fun to watch! By the way: My thoughts exactly with the "porch" outside the window! - When you first sat down on the sill... Makes so much sense! 💪 Is that gonna be the next project?

Laura, please make lids for your new aluminium boxes. Maybe just from ply but covered with leather / lineoleum, alternating. Would be super useful and also be a solution for the stack / plant platform.
