    I recently got a Zhiyun. I love it more than my camera if that says anything - the footage is unreal and amazing.
    It's my very first gimbal, and I've never owned a Steadicam/Glidecam before neither.. but I balanced it in a few minutes and use it w no problems. No vibrations, no shakes, no bugging out, no glitches, etc.

    I think each has it's own use, but I prefer a steadicam personally. I like how it has that floating effect compared to the tracking/motorized look gimbals produce.

    Thanks man! I have a low budget steadicam which can be frustrating at times. But I'm not very patient and don't have the steadiest hands. But I sure can't see spending 4 times as much for a gimbal that will frustrate me just as much if not more. And in your footage, I certainly can't see anything that makes the gimbal worth the extra money. Your steadicam shots are mostly every bit as smooth.
    Cheers.

      You're telling me that a stabiliser that costs 6 times the amount shown off in this video is better? Wow. Amazing

    • @overnightclassic2
      @overnightclassic2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For reliability gimbals are slightly easier to use and get good looking shots. Steadicams are easy too, but they're not as easy for first-timers and it takes a while to get good at one. On top of that there's much more room for error mess up a steadicam shot and bump causing them to sway a bit, and on top of that certain techniques such as running and stopping quickly take some practice.

    There is a lot of misinformation floating around in the world of indie filmmaking. A steadycam IS a type of gimbal. A gimbal is what is used to stabilize the camera. There are your standard non motorized gimbals (flycam, glidecam, steadycam, merlin, etc) , and the newer, motorized gimbals (MoVi, Ronin etc). The title should be changed to "Gimbals: Motorized vs Non Motorized"

    • @foljs5858
      @foljs5858 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +thomaskazuya > A steadycam IS a type of gimbal -- That's irrelevant. Those terms have acquired the meaning that gimbal = mechanized whereas steadicam is the old-style weight balanced type. Nobody also cares for the difference between glidecam vs steadicam and so on.

      You might be technically right, but the better type of communication is what actually people are able to understand. Sometimes, the right information might just confuse them - the objective is to see what's important.

    My main camera is a Sony a6300. You are absolutely correct about heavy lenses and how the gimbal will struggle to balance. I had a Glidecam HD 1000, and sold it because it was not portable when I travel. I now have a Pilotfly H1. Compared to the Glidecam, I like the portability factor of it.

  • @Shimmoda
    @Shimmoda 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    They have those steady Cam mechanical gimbals that are much smaller and they have 3 legs at the bottom. If the Steadicam was more compact would you recommend it over the other? I'm normally on my motorcycle so I need something small

  • @RoadTripTravel
    @RoadTripTravel 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Some great points to consider. I have a small gimbal for a GoPro and it works amazingly well. I also have a stedi-cam for my DSLR, but rarely use it because it's too much trouble to balance.

  • @OmarOmarOmar
    @OmarOmarOmar 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I've always preferred the steadicam over the gimbal mostly because the steadicam offers such a nice fluid feel whereas the gimbal is very static if that makes sense. Been thinking about investing in a gimbal but I highly doubt i'll be getting one.

  • @mosesknows2062
    @mosesknows2062 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have a cheap version of a Steadycam, (Neewer 24')... Once set-up it does a pretty good job... However, it has no "micro"
    adjustments and is difficult and takes work to balance, so much so, I dedicate a camera/lens for it's use, if possible...
    The Steadycam type stabilizer has unwanted "X" axis movement, while a gimbal I have used has unwanted movement in
    the "Y" axis but is easier to set up on the fly when switching to a tripod etc... Thxx, Moses...

    Nice comparison. I was hesitating about whether to buy a stedycam or a gimbal. They each have their strengths and weaknesses and you've covered them well in this video. I'm leaning towards steadycam now. Bigger size is my only concern since I know I have to travel with it every now and then. Have you tried mobile phone gimbals. They are a lot cheaper and some of them seem to give really good results. I think it could be an easy option for holiday trip if you have somewhat decent phone.

    • @videodslrtutorial
      @videodslrtutorial  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No I didn't try mobile phone gimbals yet.
      I'm sure there are that work well within certain limitations.
      1. A phone doesn't have super wide angle
      2. The heavier the set up, the more stable it is. Phones are very light so it might not be super smooth

      You can also get a wide angle lens attachment for an iPhone. I just got the Moment wide angle lens; it goes for around $100.
      I use my DSLR, but I find my iPhone to be much more convenient and lighter to use when doing really long day hikes or backpacking trips in the mountains. But I'm no professional or anything. xD

    Both appear to have the same functions. A few months ago I would have said the steadicam, but I have found that there is a rather steep learning curve, and not only that, it can take awhile to set up. With a simple electronic gimbal/steadicam such as the Zhiyun Crane, I would eliminate a lot of stress and set up time.
    I've had my Flycam 3000 for over a year now and I still can't get good shots. I dunno if it's technique or if it's defective, but I the convenience of gimbal cannot be overstated in my line of work.

    Subjectivity or perspective is really interesting. Most of the comments here say that the steadycam is more fluid.
    I for one find the gimbal more fluid and reduces the up down movements of walking more. But I still prefer the more "natural" look the steadycam gives.

  • @SinisterSkip
    @SinisterSkip 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very nice gimbal shots, but a lot of your gimbal shots have the horizon tilted about 5 degrees to the right, while the horizon ofcourse should be horizontal? I see many gimbals failing there, especially Feiyutechs. What's up with that? One of the strength of a gimbal should be providing a horizontal horizon, nice and aligned. Do you need to re-adjust it every time for the same camera or so?

    • @videodslrtutorial
      @videodslrtutorial  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, most gimbals have this problem and it has nothing to do with the balancing. It's entirely up to the motor. Different gimbals fix in it different ways. On the gimbal I currently use, Moza Air, I fix it via the phone app.

    I bought a Cametv gimbal second hand on ebay after hearing good things and not being too clued up - one of the settings was dodgy and unuseable, but I still noticed a kind of un-natural robotic jerkiness on other settings that at first seemed fine and actually thought that maybe i needed stabilization on my lenses too. Now I'm thinking (and hoping!) its not that and its just the modern technology creating that weird look, an am trying a flycam. I'm sure for a while some electric gimbals can be fine, but I dont like the uncertainty/possibilty of things breaking down on me either. I've always been a bit of an advocate of older, more reliable technology anyway in ways so I'm not really sure why I went for the gimbal in the first place and feel slightly naive too maybe, and it might now get very little use if any, ha.

    What do you mean by "probably warped" on some of the shots?

    • @videodslrtutorial
      @videodslrtutorial  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The warp stabilizer is a tool in Adobe Premiere Pro CC that smoothens videos.
      I just copied in scenes from videos that I already made so I didn't use the original files.
      And on some of those scenes I used the warp stabilizer. I thought it's better to note it so that people don't accuse me for cheating ;)

    Nice video and thanks for sharing. The Gimbals add features like tracking and the prices have come down quite a bit. Good or bad I vape so I always have 18650 batteries. 😉

    You cant see the screen on your gimbal while filming. Is that not an annoyance?

    • @videodslrtutorial
      @videodslrtutorial  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point! I don't really mind it. Even on my steadycam I don't exactly look on the screen. I look on my lens. By seeing my lens I know how the picture looks like. This however only counts for super wide angle shots. When I'm on 20mm or above I do look on the screen but still, I can see enough on the Gimbal to know what I am shooting. Especially cause I never have the Gimbal on eye level but chest level, so I look on it from the top.

    I needed a wide angle lens so I needed to get a gimbal for the new camera!
