The only AP1's you can find probably have cracked valve retainers from someone overreving them just once at some distant point in the car's history, and unless you do a partial disassembly and verify the retainers aren't cracking or do an AP2 retainer swap, you'll get a gross surprise when the engine fails unexpectedly. As cars transition into the realm of collector's market, it's unavoidable. The prices for MkIV Supras and RX-7's have gotten insanely stupid the last five years.
Get a Miata. Selling my 2010 WRX to buy a 2019/2020 Club Soft Top Miata. Better power to weight ratio than an S2000, better acceleration than an s2000, better interior, it's just better. And this is coming from a Honda Fanboy

I own an S2k and it’s a blast, an 02 w/28k. I’ve owned 2 WRXs (sorry, not STI) and they were a blast too. The WRXs were daily drivers and the 2k is a “see me with the top down” type day driver and impractical as all get out, but it’s fun, and not as forgiving. That’s why I have it. Here’s what I ran into for both, ricer challenges. Every time I’d drive any of them, some flat-brimmed wearing, fart cannon driving winged Civic or Evo wants to go. Aside from that, you can’t go wrong with either. They’re both fun, they’re both quick, and they handle well.

If ur a single men like me, Don't need to move place to place often, s2k's truck actually has plenty of room for you, plus there is always passenger seat room too. I love the S2k because it is unashamedly a sports car. However, when there is a foot of snow on the ground my favorite thing to do is order delivery pizza. Every single time its delivered by a grinning teen driving a wrx or sti with a big ol' fart cannon because he's living out his ken block fantasy. For that I like the subie. It gets me service with a smile in bad weather.
I daily an ND Miata, including through last winter in NE Ohio, so the thought of dailying the S2000 wouldn’t scare me off. But the STI is far more practical...except you’ll be filling up the tank every other day, and going through a set of tires every year. So it’s more practical, but also probably more expensive to own and maintain.

The S2000 is a lovely cocoon world where the 1999 auto shows are still going on, Honda was promising that their double wishbones would never end, and they looked to the past to give context to their present. It was the last great mechanical Honda, and it carried the torch of their 90s heritage through 2009. It sat, gathering dust in showrooms as Macpherson struts spread through Honda dealers like cancer, and the economy tanked while Honda’s greatest engineers turned grey and their race teams disbanded and hid in corners. Minivan owners waiting for their blown transmissions to be diagnosed would glance over at it while stirring their coffee and laugh at the 2600 pound anachronism which sat motionless near the soda machines, collecting hand prints from poorly minded-toddlers. That car is the last of an era that included the MR2, the CRX, the SE-R, and it’s now being defined by kids that wanted a DC2R but couldn’t force their mom’s third husband to love them enough to drop 30k on one. Meh.

My favorite Subaru memory was doing the speed limit on the highway in a snow downpour while everyone else was in the slow lane doing 30 under. The stability is crazy

Get the S2000 with an F20c if you want a really special engine. If you score a late model, clean F22, it's a good candidate for a small turbo.

Eh. Owned both. The S2000 is a lovely cocoon world where the 1999 auto shows are still going on, Honda was promising that their double wishbones would never end, and they looked to the past to give context to their present. It was the last great mechanical Honda, and it carried the torch of their 90s heritage through 2009. It sat, gathering dust in showrooms as Macpherson struts spread through Honda dealers like cancer, and the economy tanked while Honda’s greatest engineers turned grey and their race teams disbanded and hid in corners. Minivan owners waiting for their blown transmissions to be diagnosed would glance over at it while stirring their coffee and laugh at the 2600 pound anachronism which sat motionless near the soda machines, collecting hand prints from poorly minded-toddlers. That car is the last of an era that included the MR2, the CRX, the SE-R, and it’s now being defined by kids that wanted a DC2R but couldn’t force their mom’s third husband to love them enough to drop 30k on one.

So let me get this straight. Prime driven gave away: R32 skyline gtr, Lancer evolution 9 mr, lancer evolution 10 gsr (360whp), Sw20 toyota mr2 turbo, Honda S2000 and a Subaru WRX STI

STI. The S2000 is too good for 87% of PA roads. Otherwise S2K all day.
I'm only mildly upset it wasn't an AP1. Also S2000's are actually damn good in the snow as long as you have the tires for it. [I've done 45mph in 4 in of powder lol]
My favorite Subaru memory was doing the speed limit on the highway in a snow downpour while everyone else was in the slow lane doing 30 under. The stability is crazy
I like the STI but I take the S2000 because it has VTEC and RWD

0 competiton. The s2000 is built to handle more power on the stock block, and in stock Form, it's more fun and engaging than the Subaru. It's a real driver's car!
