Yeah, wagons are cool, and I would love to see them come back. This car is really more like a hatchback than a wagon, being pretty stubby in back. In the rest of the world there were wagons like this, but not in the US. Subaru could have called it a hatchback, but they were unfashionable in the US then, and almost all were very cheap, small cars.

trust me in countries that got these in the 90s the owners were already ruining the rep long before the USA got them. You couldn't move for Colin McRae rally car replicas in the 90s in the UK and I was at uni with a guy who owned one and grenaded 3 engines in a year.

@@CrazyKraut20 cranking up the boost pressure, fitting a lumpy cam and doing nothing to strengthen the internals then going off for a hoon around a bunch of west country B roads. At least that's how he lost the third engine, I know less about the circumstances for engines 1 and 2. Dune was 20 years old and able to afford this, so it's safe to say he had more money than sense.

He worked for microsoft or something and made a fortune, and decided he wanted to teach, so he got a job as the computer technology teacher. Dude was a huge inspiration to me, i wasnt a good student so they made me his assistant (we were still wiring the individual classrooms for network and internet at the time) for the majority of my day. You really nailed it with that opening. I woke up yesterday and had that exact train of thought, the fantasy of being able to go back, knowing what you know now. It's scary. One day you wake up and realize just how long it's been since high school, that you're not really going anywhere in life. You don't necessarily mind it, but you do think back to how you would've played things differently if you'd known this was as far as you'd go... Powerful thoughts and a fun review, thanks RCR as always.

We had tons of NA coupes in the U.S. but the blueballs for anything with a turbo was absolutely real back in the day. Before we got the 2002 WRX, we hadn't really had any Japanese turbo/AWD sports cars since the Celica All-trac (GT4) went out of production in 1994. Thanks in large part to Gran Turismo, but also the internet, there was this huge grassroots interest in rallying and all things JDM. Subaru would've made a killing if they'd brought the WRX over one generation sooner, but i suspect they still made a killing bringing it over when they did.

This week I am dailying a 1996 Impreza wagon, 1.6 liter base model, bone stock. It has power steering, heated seats and tiny, paint matched, factory option Hella highbeams on top of the bumper, and 2 airbags. It has NO central locking, No power windows, No brake booster, No ABS, Drumbrakes in the rear, No cruisecontrol. Its like a corolla to drive, except noisier and all wheel drive, It has blanking plastic sheets where the fog lights would go, no spoilers and narrower wheelarches. Blue metallic and light gray cloth upholstery. Bought new by old lady at church one year after I got my drivers license. Now owned by my dad since many years after the old lady stopped driving. There is No Rust (!!), and passenger and back seats look never used, driver's is a litte cracked on the side. I fell immediately in love with it, it's the bare minimum subaru, pre-hype with only practical options added to the bare base. I like to think this old lady bought her last car, brand new, and asked the dealer for heated seats, extra highbeams for living in the forest, and chose 4 wheel drive since her hubby is too old to shovel the driveway as often.. raw practicality transportation.
This car turned my father into a diehard subaru fan, he then bough in succession forester, legacy outback, forester, outback, outback diesel and outback petrol CVT.

It's really been my best days so far despite of having some sadness issue and pressure form being an asian highschool student. And because I'm a week man back then, me and my girl didn't have further development in our relationship. Right after my highschool years i go study abroad and got no chance evermore. No boost gauge but you can feel the boost building around 3K, redline is 7K but seldom bother, it more than keeps up with traffic when driven sensibly. The lightness can be felt, it does not coddle you but is decent on highway trips, although it is thirsty. We used to have a 1992 Civic SIR EG hatch, that was light and much better on fuel, but no torque. I do miss the 8K redline of the B16, you feel fast without getting into trouble.

@@Bartonovich52 There's almost this wired sub-generation of us Gen Z kids that were born 1999-2002, are too young to remember or were still unborn during 9/11, were too young to understand the issues of the late 2000s and early 2010s, and too young to fully relate to things such as Mr. Regular's '90s nostalgia. However, we're too old to fully relate much of our own generation. We grew up playing the Wii and earlier versions of Minecraft. We remember TH-cam being new and the cool kid in class had an iPod touch with Angry Birds, not an iPhone X or Apple watch. We're too old to completely understand TikTok but clearly remember Vine. Our early childhood soundtrack was the tail end of alt-rock, and we remember when Ke$ha was played on the radio alongside Paramore. Most of us graduated high school in the past two or three years, and I think either the Class of 2020 or 2021 will be the last of us to graduate.
I've heard this subset referred to as "Zillenials" and I'm not sure if we'll see much of a difference between us and the rest of Gen Z in the long run, but I definitely feel as though there is some kind of divide, especially when we're still so young.

The GF8 wagon is a gem to be treasured. In my Top 3 list of dream builds. Sleeper, cargo space, manual transmission.

I drive a Bugeye, 2002 WRX Wagon, 5spd. It's this car with a facelift and interior swap, basically. Functionally it's the same engine, 2.0L Turbo Twin Cam Boxer 4cyl. I fucking love this car. I haven't had to do any engine mods, it's more than fast enough and it sounds wonderful, very similar to this does. I always tell my friends it's like a Honda with a turbo and AWD. Subaru did fix one thing about that turbo for the USDM release, where it spools. Unlike these older WRXs, the '02 Wagons spool just above 3k with the same 7.2k redline. It's perfect, fast and functional without looking stupid or gaudy.

"Just because a statement is true doesn't mean saying it won't be inconsequential"
Yes, but simply ignoring it demonstrates a willingness to let misinformation permeate the crowd and possibly lead them astray.

@Mr. Duckhead I mean, I can't tell if you're agreeing with me or disagreeing, so I'll take the middle road and say that no matter what side we're on politically, we as a people should strive for truth. Not what the media tells us is "correct".
