I forgot to clarify, I don't see something like the ASTRO C40 or the Gulikit controllers as being the first "Anti-stick drift pro controllers." Swappable thumbsticks are not a fix in my opinion, and the King Kong controllers, while great, don't have buttons on the bottom so I don't consider them pro controllers in the competitive sense. I've said this before but I neglected to bring it up this time my mistake!

OK jesting aside, 8bitdo do (lol) so much right, but once I used the Gamesir G7 there was no way back. If the Gamesir G7 had hall effect sticks, and trigger stops, that's an endgame controller right there, mostly.

You also forgot to say that the backbuttons are not extra buttons on software or driver level, so they cant do a different extra action in-game that you don't already have asigned to an existing button like A, B or RT. What I mean is that those buttons are not recognized as an L3 or R3 in driver level in any circumstance so they are just extra buttons that can't do anything in the case you want an extra action

@@lenh8612 Hall effect sticks require more precise voltages so the PCB itself needs some changes as well. Some people have successfully made Frankenstein modifications to swap out regular potentiometer sticks but it's not for the faint of heart, simply swapping the sticks out is not possible unless it's a Joy-Con stick or something like the sticks they made specifically for the Steam Deck, which comes with its own mini PCB to handle all the conversions (which is why the Steam Deck Gulikit stick is extra pricey).

This controller is awesome. The thumb sticks, however, were rubbing against the edges of their insert, causing some unnecessary wear, so I bought some inexpensive silicone protectors and reduced the max stick range to 98%. Works flawlessly. Heavy, heavy usage, but haven't experienced any drift yet.

I have had the 8BitDo Ultimate for 3 months and have zero issues whatsoever with stick drift or connectivity. I use the charge dock as 2.4ghz wireless connection on my PC and it INSTANTLY connects in literally 2 seconds every single time without fail, and makes a satisfying rumble when it connects... D-Pad is great (I've heard that is 8BitDo's specialty apparently). I got some Skull n Co universal thumbstick grips which work fine, and as in this video was able to barely pop my Xbox KontrolFreek thumbsticks onto this controller. If it came with interchangeable stick lengths and thumb covers it would be near perfect. Highly Recommend.

I bought this controller based off of your review back in February 8 months ago. Absolutely love it!!
Pros and cons: cons first, no trigger stops, only has 2 back paddles wish it had 4, wish I had extra buttons to map to keybinds, wish it had built in audio jack. Pros: still running 1% deadzones in November, aim still feels perfect and precise. Charging cradle is really sleek and functional. I remapped ads and fire to front bumpers, best decision ever for FPS games. I can highly recommend this controller for fast paced FPS pc gaming. I have an Xbox KontrolFreak on my right stick for precise aiming and it fits very snugly, never ever has it came off, it’s a little difficult to remove.

Ive had this controller since the beginning of December and I have used it non-stop since then. I do not mind the dpad, and I think its better than a lot of mushy dpads you can get from other controllers. I ran the no deadzone option for a while but had to increase my deadzone to 1% because of stick drift, and haven't had to change it since (1% deadzone is still amazing). I have noticed that if you press the bumpers with a little too much side force (as in not perfectly opposite to how the button travels) that they can seem to have a TON more resistance. its not something that happens often but when it does its slightly annoying, but being aware of it has pretty much allowed me to avoid having it happen mid session. The only final complaint that I have is that occasionally the controller will take 2-3 minutes to connect to the 2.4ghz dongle. Once it is connected i have no issues. Oh and I have had the double clicking issue occasionally but only in one specific game. I wasnt sure if this controller would fit any of the standard controller kontrol freeks so I got some universal thumbstick risers and I've had no problems with them. Best controller Ive used and Id buy it again

@@fatih372 I realized that the correct term for my issue was JOYSTICK WIGGLE. 🤔
Hall effect joysticks prevent stick drift caused by the metal contacts wearing down, but not stick wiggle aka loose joystick.
The battery wasn't the cause for me... 🤷‍♂️
      More in depth:
(When the metal parts inside the joystick module wear out and even if the joystick is physically at centered position, it drifts in the game)
(My issue was that the joystick itself was wiggly and loose. The spring or something similar started to wear)
(My guess would be because I play alot of Rocket League (alot of left stick spinning) that the joysticks "shaft" part gets scraped by the inner ring of the controller.
It makes plastic dust which goes under the joystick and starts creaking and making noise (which it did) & eventually causing it to go loose & wiggle. Maybe a controller accent ring / anti-friction ring would fix this problem?)
If someone read this, cheers! 😁✌️

As someone who now has an 8bitdo ultimate Bluetooth controller and has used it to it's "wear in" period. the uh, only thing that isn't loose are the triggers. The dpad top part moves like 5 millimeters each direction, the joystick springs are rather loose, the abxy buttons also have a little wiggle. the back buttons are in my opinion a little too easy to push, it took a bit before I could press them lightly enough. while in use however, these little visual oddities aren't noticeable in games. basically it isn't enough of a hindrance to impact gameplay.

  • @xaytana
    @xaytana ปีที่แล้ว +14

Hall effect sensors *DO* develop drift, it's just how they are and there's no way around it. They have an infancy period of high voltage drift, that drops and plateaus to a low, that then shows age-related voltage drift that becomes a runaway issue; this quiescent drift rating is only around 1000 hours. There's also no real mitigation against this, as it does become a runaway issue, meaning drift gets worse as it ages past the quiescent period. Think about it, 1000 hours of use time isn't much, especially when people love to leave their wireless controllers on constantly; this is why you don't really see warranties for these kinds of products, manufacturers know the sensors will shit the bed fairly quickly, and if there is a warranty it'll be pretty short. Keep in mind this is also average among the set, so infancy period, rated voltage drift, the quiescent age-related voltage drift rating, as well as how badly age-related drift ramps up after the quiescent period are all pretty much a roll of the dice; and as the tested set grows, initial major outliers can also come closer to the realistic numbers, so data isn't even consistent if it's not continually updated.
For sticks, this is _bad._ Consider how the sensors are used in a stick, you constantly have the magnet over the sensor, which means you have a floating center; also why GuliKit sticks are a bit notorious for having jumpy centers, though there's also other issues surrounding this; non-linearity and saturation issues, GK's design which 8BD uses as well as AYANEO, and the Steam Deck replacement sticks, uses a rotational sweep rather than a linear sweep on a sensor that prefers the linear sweep, this rotational sweep also causes variation in magnet strength through the sweep and is propably hitting saturation in the physical sensor, causing the jumpy center issues. This also means the sensor is _always_ in use, and even at the extreme negative of the axis, where a magnet would otherwise typically out of the range of the sensor in any other setup, the magnet is still within the sensor's range, meaning a 100% on-time.
Now also consider that analog triggers for about a decade or so, outside of PlayStation and some third parties, also use hall sensors, but think about why this is a non-issue for them. First of all, triggers aren't meant to be super accurate anyways, the most accurate thing you'll do with them is feather throttle and brake in a racing game, but even that's fairly clunky. Second, you have to understand how these sensors are meant to operate, the optimal model is a magnet and sensor on offset planes, meaning two-axes parallel with only a height offset, with either A) a rotating magnet on the sensing axis, B) a lateral linear sweep of the magnet along the sensing axis, or C) a vertical linear movement of the magnet in relation to the sensing axis; now look at how triggers physically operate, they're quite often hinged, which means you have an off-axis rotation combined with the vertical linear sweep around that off-axis pivot, which results in a very non-uniform output graph. Between these two, triggers just are not accurate in the slightest, whereas sticks are meant to be an order of magnitude (if not a couple of orders) higher in resolution, and combine this with the additional downsides of the sticks, you can see why triggers are a non-issue while sticks are an issue. Also, triggers have their resting point outside of the sensor's range, this is why you don't see resting drift.
There's better tech out there, just nobody is really chasing it. Sony had a design (the four pin modules in the SixAxis and DualShock 3 controllers) throughout the PS3 cycle (early Fat era to at least Super Slim, if not into the latter's era), and only up until recently did anyone figure out what it actually was, because nobody cared to look into it; as far as I know, I'm the only person to have actually probed one for various resistances and voltages and documented it, I now understand what Sony, or more accurately ALPS (they're so much larger than you might realize, with more variety in components than you might realize) as they produced the four pin modules, had done, and after I do some looking and running some numbers I'm passing the project off to a couple contacts I have in the industry to see if they'll produce something with it, as it's getting to the point of requiring fab work to produce a simplistic model, just as the original Sony/ALPS modules had their own fab line. Beyond this, as this solution still has downsides such as external fields being a problem, there's even better solution that's nobody is chasing, I've found _one_ patent that does what I had in mind from 2019, and another patent along more novel ideas from 1996 that could see a lot of improvement with modern novel approaches, but these are the only research into inductive sticks that I could find. There's also some other novel solutions beyond this, but they require more effort to pull off, such as an optoelectronic solution, or other tech that isn't a form of magnetosensor.
The whole issue with this is that this is just a marketing scheme. ALPS has caused an issue by reducing quality of their potentiometers, someone has stepped up with a solution that's poorly understood by the wider community. What isn't understood by the wider community is that hall sensors have a dogshit usable accurate lifespan, yet nobody listens to this when it's spoken of. Potentiometers, as a technology, are not a problem, a properly specced potentiometer can easily last you a lifetime, the issue comes in when the manufacturers over-spec their products and underdeliver on longevity; all that's really needed is a carbon resistor compound that won't degrade under intended use, these products have force ratings after all, excessive force past their intended use is what's degrading them so quickly. So while hall sensors may be marginally better, and really only at the first 1000 hours before age-related voltage drift shows up and becomes a runaway issue, they're not a long-term solution, but the entire gaming community is taking the bait and praising these sensors while not understanding their downsides and how the products will absolutely shit themselves. Thus, it's all marketing buzz, so that these companies can profit, which is the only thing they care about; they don't care about you, they don't care about wasted controllers, they don't care about the wider industry, they only care that profits go up. Also take into consideration, once your hall sensors do shit themselves, they'll be even harder to replace; why, because they're SMD sensors that also require on alignment accuracy to function properly, if you skew the sensing axis in relation to the magnet, or vice versa, you will have less accurate input, again on a fairly high fidelity input device. Dreamcast also did the whole hall effect thing 25 years ago, it wasn't a big new idea then, and there's a reason why that stick design never caught on; which adds to why it's just marketing buzz now.

I even tested it out with emulators, not only do they instantly recognize the controller as a Switch Pro (so no need to set up the button inputs), but the gyro works as well. I don't remember which button combination is used to go back to XInput, but its all in the manual. Also, I think you have to update its firmware first to avoid some weird conection issues.

I own this controller as well as the Elite series 2. The series 2 is lost somewhere inside a bag since i tried the 8bitdo, because it's so much better.
The sticks are so good. I finished F.I.S.T. with it, and loved it. The elite2 had buttons problems (somethimes not registering), had stick problems (sometimes character was going on the other side when releasing stick or trying to center it)
It never happened with the 8bitdo.
    Only drawback: i lost 150€ on the elite2 because 8bitdo wasn't there ;)

Thanks for your vid about this controller. Is this controller the one to buy for pc gaming?
I'm really leaning towards buying the 8BitDo for optimal pc gaming. But the 8BitDo sometimes looses the comparison with the Gulikit's KK2P, depening on where you look.
When googling 'the best controller for pc', the Series X controller still comes out higher recommended and is said to have a better rumble, also in the triggers (which the other ones have not) and a sort of haptic feedback. This is a big plus.
But the no friction sticks and the quick snap triggers of the Gulikit's, as well as the software (read: trigger settings) and the back-buttons of the 8BitDo and the no-deadzone hall sensors of both, are also real big plusses. So i'm breaking my brain over these controllers.

I love this controller for gaming in Linux with the 2.4ghz dock passthrough for the dongle. I bought it a few weeks ago and it's the best controller I've found for gaming in Linux with Steam/Proton. Very sturdy feeling and the rumble works perfect. I've been using it to play Octopath Traveler 2 and it's very responsive. I love how when I remove it from the dock, it's ready to go,

Had this controller for a few months now because as much as I wanted to buy an Xbox controller, I don't ever want to waste my money on something that will fail me after a while. NGL the ergonimics feel just fine in my case, and I love how accurate the thumbsticks are (just make sure you keep the controller charged, or else the thumbsticks will drift due to lack of power). For the price of an Xbox X|S Core/Switch Pro/Dualsense Controller, y'all are better off with a controller like this (I haven't tried the GuliKit KingKing 2/Zen Pro, but anything with those magnetic thumbsticks are instantly better than most controllers imo)

It bothers me that 8bitdo does not advertise this very well if at all, its mentioned two times burried in their specsheet on the website for this controller, its not mentioned on the box itself, not in the manual or on the controller, you would be none the wiser unless you actually OPENED the controller and had a look.
Really weird considering its more expensive and uses entirely different tech.

    • @Chuckychargeblade
      @Chuckychargeblade ปีที่แล้ว +1

I've been considering this myself and the answer is no. The readings of hall-effect magnets require a special translator in the controller to be read by whatever you're using it with. If you were super in depth, knew where to purchase the niche parts, owned a 3D printer, and have a full soldering iron kit--you could 𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 do it, but yeah not yet for average or even advanced consumers. There's one guy on YT trying to do it for PS4 controllers, that's about it for right now.

I've been using this controller now for Rocket league a couple of days and I can say that it is a huge upgrade on the xbox series x controller. However one issue I've found is that the bumpers is feeling a little sticky upon deactivation. they sometimes stay pushed down for a couple tenth's of a second longer from when I release the button. With drift binded on one of the bumpers, I sometimes drift for too long. If only their feel was the same as their back-buttons... I don't think this controller holds up as a competitive RL controller sadly... Maybe I'm just having a monday-ex?

i understand what you mean. the hall effect feels different. specially if you are playing as sniper in warzone. the aim feels so heavy but when you add little bit more push to the joysticks the aim just fly away. 🤣

Edit" firmware 1.04 beta seems to have corrected this issue.
@10:40 Mine has problems like this even when wired. The stick loses it's outer range as you play. I play rocket league and it's critical to have the full 100% range so you can half flip, and also just the loss of proper sensitivity in either direction which in Rocket League above all games is pretty critical. The range resets itself if I dock it ( or turn it off, but that takes 8+ seconds so I have to play wireless and dock it frequently ) I actually can't even get through a 5 minute match without the problem reoccurring. You can actually feel it get worse by the minute as you play, first I lose the full 12 Oclock range, then eventually I lose also the full 6 Oclock range and by then my left and right feel to be move sensitive so I turn to much side/side in my aerial plays. I wish the software would just silently reset the proper calibrated range as you play but I think most people don't even notice this is happening because of the games they play it doesn't matter or isn't noticeable enough to them.
