Honestly, the thing about this camera that sticks out the most to me is the dxo sensor score. Not that other apsc cameras don't take nice pictures, but somehow these guys actually pulled legit ff quality out of an apsc sensor whereas canon, Sony, and nikkon have not.
@@memcrew1 check the dxo evaluation process. They measure color depth, dynamic range, iso performance, and create a score based on these factors. The best apsc sensors barely clip the mid 80s. While the best FF hit the high 90s, it is unprecedented for an apsc to actually hit 90.
@@balboa0621 That’s because Sony, Nikon and Canon don’t put too much R&D into their APC lineup. They treat them as a gateway into their more expensive FF.
Hi Mattias, does the 26MP sensor have a real global shutter, as stated by Pixii or does it just have a fast readout? I ask this, because in tests there is banding in pictures if using pulsed led-lights, which should not be the case when using a real global shutter. Thank you! Christian
Pretty sure Pixii doesn’t claim the 26mp is a global shutter. Because it’s not. But it is very fast and I have used fixed LED lights a lot for portraits etc with no banding.
Soooo Mattias, if wanting to jump into a system like this, what Leica M lens would be preferable as a all round lens, for both cityscapes, street photography and some portrait shooting, that is not OVERLY expensive and has a fairly shallow depth of field...?? (I know there might not be ANY lens with all those capabilities, but still) Thank you for always covering such very interesting gear, makes me want to just grab a camera and go out shooting!
Personally Ive been using a 21/4 and 40/1.4, both Voigtlander. The 40 sits in 99% of the time, for landscaping as well. But otherwise 28mm seems very popular just going by what gets mentioned in the user group. God Jul!
Thank you for the nice info, unfortunately the camera doesn’t have the Live view display which is quite essential to check our composition and correct amount of exposure level..
The lens lock on my Pixii doesn’t engage with three of my Leica lenses. When I’m focusing, the lens can unscrew and just falls off the camera. It can take three or four button presses just to turn it on and the wireless transfer of the files to my iPad corrupts the photos. They look completely mangled. I thought that updating the firmware might fix my issues but sadly, no. With the import duties this thing cost me AU$5500. Not impressed at all.
I have to say Mattias that I would be one of many here who admire your unwavering support for this tiny French company, most of my colleagues think it is a quirky innovative little machine but I also share their sentiments. Pixii must start establishing a dealer network around the world, infact they need to hire a guy fulltime who lives out of a suitcase, travelling around the world for 8 to 10months of the promoting the product. This is the only way for them to succeed... otherwise...
@@gearreallydoesntmatter That's where they need capital investment, I'm sure many a squillionaire would back them, look at TTArtisans out of China, trusted sources tell me it is a Wizard of Oz Billionaire running the show, he barely cares about profits, he just wants his own lens company.
They already have that as well. The biggest issue is training staff. The only people who knows how to build the camera is the once busy building it. There is a plan for scaling and they have help from some of the best in the business.
These look great, I might pick one up, but tbh It will have to be really damn fun to use for me to pick it over my Panasonic GM5 on the way out the door.
Until Pixii cameras make it on the used market or Pixii is a little more established and has a secure future i just can't justify the price.... the camera looks gorgeous and the picutres are great..... but even though i spend 3x as much on a leica.... with leica i can be sure that even in 20 years i can still get the parts and repairs etc.... and my camera doesn't lose a lot of value on the used market.... Would love to invest and support these guys... but from a business standpoint it just doesn't make fiscal sense for me yet
Most digital cameras are loaded with proprietary electronic components (displays, drivers, and especially the custom image processor -- Maestro, Digic, Xspeed, etc.) and these all eventually "go EOL" (end-of-life.) If your Leica's Maestro chip fails after that, the factory can't tell Kurt and Jurgen in the back shop to make you a new one out of raw silicon; your camera becomes a brick. What Pixii has done is to move a lot of that proprietary functionality into software running on a general-purpose processor and an FPGA (field-programmable gate array, basically a "blank chip" than can be reflashed if needs change.) This costs more on a per-chip basis but gives more flexibility. For example, the previous A1571 model used a display that became scarce on the supply chain, so for the new A2571 model they switched to a more available one and rewrote the code so either the old one or the new one will work. From this perspective, the Pixii is MORE future-proof than most cameras.
Like your delivery but each time I watch any of your reviews I go to search the price which then reveals a shock. So most cameras over priced. They are cameras simple, would be more interested if they were not the same price of a second hand car and in some cases more than a second hand car .
@@gearreallydoesntmatter I understand but they don’t cost more than a car to manufacture ! I purchased a Porsche 986 fantastic condition for less than a camera how can that be ? By the way they are also made in Germany like the Leica M8. Which would you prefer to own ? Thanks for the reply though Mattias
They are made in France. I’m pretty sure your car cost way more than what you paid when it was new. The focusing mechanism alone cost €1000 to make. So I honestly don’t think the profit is that big.
The first batch with the new processor is expected to ship before Christmas. If you want to find users that own the “old” model you can checkout the Facebook group, we are a growing number in there. The camera has been available for purchase for about two years now.
I already have many times. I bought my camera at full price like everyone else. Haven’t received a single cent from Pixii. But I communicate with them and help test and suggest regarding their development. PS. When did I call this a review?
I’m vacillating between this and maybe a Q2 Leica for color. I have a Leica M10M…need a color rangefinder to mate with it…hmmm This is tempting…just missing autofocus, but, could reuse my M mount lenses with this. Decisions decisions
I have a Pixii and like it, but one potential hurdle for current Leica M owners is that not all your M mount lenses will fit. Lenses that are too large in diameter or physically too long will obstruct the rangefinder window and make focusing difficult or impossible. This isn't a big problem if you're building a system around the Pixii, but if you already have a lot of RF lenses you may not like how often you find yourself saying, “Darn, I wish I could use my ______ “…
There’s the APS-C Leica CL as well. It accepts SL autofocus/manual full frame), TL autofocus/manual (APS-C) and M manual (full frame) lenses, is highly portable, and has an excellent EVF. It’s been recently discontinued, but is still available. I have one with all the TL lenses as well as a Leica Q2 Monochrom, SL2, and M11.
@@johnkasianowicz6536 Oh...thanks for reminding me that the Pixii is aps-c and not full frame. Hmm. Well, crop might be fun too, I just would like a small color camera to pair with my small monochrome camera for just me traveling, our out and about. I've got plenty of LARGE cameras, but those are tools for different jobs..these smaller ones, I'll carry about anywhere any time...
@@jlwilliams I"m used to a bit of rangefinder blockage on my M10M. Are you saying the Pixii has worse problems than a normal Leica M mount camera does? I keep most of my lenses small-ish, but I did recently get the voigtlander Nokton f/1.0 lens that is a bit chubby, and the voigntander 75mm 1.5 (I think?) that is a bit long, but I"ve not had trouble shooting around either with what they block on the rangefinder. One advantage on the M10M, I can also attach the visio electronic viewfinder onto the flash mount and then focus through the lens. I do this mostly with old manual lenses that are adapted for the M10M. I wonder if the Pixii will offer a view finder attachment?
@@gearreallydoesntmatter I don't own one if that is your question. No I haven't looked through one! I wish I could. I am really interested in the Pixii but I wouldn't buy one before having it in hands and looking through the viewfinder.
@@zupperm I understand. Too bad there isn't a choice between electronic and mechanical shutter. I use a lot subtile fill-in flash. It would make the market for this camera also a bit bigger. Nevertheless still very interesting.
@@owRekssjfjxjxuurrpqpqss The first Pixii model used an 11 MP global shutter sensor. They dropped the global shutter abilities when switching to the 26 MP sensor
@@zupperm Unlikely but not impossible. I was curious about this when I was trying to decide whether to buy a Pixii, so I set up a test rig using a flash, a Fujifilm X-T4 in its electronic-shutter mode (similar to what Pixii uses) and a two-channel delay network I put together using a microcontroller. By tinkering with the delay timings, I was able to get reliable flash sync at up to 1/125. So it's possible Pixii would be able to do the same (and there has been talk of this as a "someday" capability) but probably it would work only with a few specific flash brands whose timing is well-documented. I'd be willing to try it, but there doesn't seem to be any way to trigger the Pixii remotely except by Bluetooth-hacking, which I haven't figured out yet...
Comparing new and used prices makes little sense to me. The Pixii at least goes up in value currently due to shortage. But imo, buying a camera with resale value as an argument is not a good idea. Better to buy land or gold.
I bought my own Pixii at full price like everyone else, I have never received any payment, I can say what ever I want about the camera. Just look at my video listing negatives. But I communicate with them and give feedback on the functionality and development. That’s why I got to test this new processor in advance.
As for the full frame argument, it is both truth and myth these days. Truth? Yes the Apsc offerings from the big three that being Canon, Sony, Nikon are inferior to their full frame offerings. Myth? Go and check out CameraLabs recent labratory testing of Fuji's latest proprietary fifth generation X-trans 40 megapixel sensor, where's your full frame god now? It devours 26MP full framers with bacon and a side of toast. Short of printing 4meter by 4meter placards or having an extremity for use in very dim light where full frame exhibits a small advantage, the likes of Pixii and Fuji have proven that you can tune the little guy to run with the big frame boys. Everybody knows this, if you hear about a professional using Apsc, what are they using? Fujifilm. The other big three apsc offerings are pro-sumer for bloggers and travellers, not for real professional work. It doesn't help that the big three's proprietary apsc lenses are toys and not tools. Hence why Pixii chose Leica M mount. Glass is the difference by far, many, many years ago my beloved 1inch Panasonic Lumix running a supercheap copycat Leica badged fixed zoom lens finally died and so I replaced it with a more expensive Canon Powershot G7x. Massive letdown, the Canon fixed lens was garbage compared to the Lumix-Leica..
@@gearreallydoesntmatter I guess it might just be my personal experience here in Australia within the community, but to be generally fair, Apsc is a bit of a rarity compared to full frame for lots of professionals.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter I guess I would have used any mirrorless mount and you could just adapt to any other lens mount out there. I guess I don't know if they have a coupled mount system. If that's the case then disregard my comment.
The rangefinder mechanism alone cost €1000 to manufacture.. if you can make it and sell it for 260 I suggest you start now. I will preorder 10 of them.

Thanks I just purchased the space gray 64 mb version
This is a very interesting camera and company. I love seeing the progress. I love this idea!
Are there any APSC M mount lens options?
All M-mount lenses cover APS-C.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter I mean non-full frame.
If someone made one it would be worse quality but still cost the same. One should always use full frame glass on APS-C if available.
I am concerned about lens. I prefer 50/1.4. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Just use a 35mm.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter i get that crop. i was asking more in terms of a lens. M-mount: voitlangder 35? I like it small for a camera like this one. thanks for the reply. how is it really in low light?
Voigtlander is a popular pairing for Pixii. I have been very happy with the 21 and 40. Many in the FB group use Voigtlander 28mm Ultron.
Would this camera "see" the field of view like any other aps-c camera using a full frame lens?
It works like a normal camera. I don’t know of any cameras that doesn’t work with the film or sensor it has.
Nice concept and beautifull camera. RF is special, still got the Fuji X100 (12mp Bayer).
Love the Concept and Look to Owning a Pixii in the Future. Does it Remotely Take a Picture through the App?
It does.
Slim, QUIET, works great. I wanted modern and out of the way. This is it!
Glad to see the guys and girls at Pixii making moves. Love the innovations
👍
Thanks for showing the features of the new processor, I am going for the upgrade.
So will I 👍📷
Can they upgrade to full frame sensor?
I wanna buy a camera for wildlife photography can I go for it and where from I can buy this camera
Are you sure you want a rangefinder for wildlife?
where can we buy? what is the price? what lenses does it take??
All that info is in the earlier videos linked in the description.
There is also a link to where you can buy. It’s Leica M.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-gx1
Pentax q7 or Pentax q
Panasonic Lumix Lx100
Olympus EP-L5
Sony ZV-1
Leica T
Sony nex 5
I'm sorry to ask too much from you but it's confusing as I lack the knowledge and understanding when it comes to cameras but I know what I want is to have a compact camera which is affordable, its just for a hobby like street photography and as in i had like around 40 selections to choose from which I narrowed it down to these that I have mentioned above, if it's not too much trouble can you guide me to further narrow it down or atleast which you prefer is more suitable, would really appreciate it
I would be hapy with any of them. Get the one you think seems coolest and that is affordable with money left for a good lens if needed.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter thank you so much for replying really appreciate it but if it was you which one would you choose personally ?, To me your opinion matters as you have mostly all the cool ones
Thanks. I’ve been considering this camera. What voigtlander lens is attached to the camera?
Honestly, the thing about this camera that sticks out the most to me is the dxo sensor score. Not that other apsc cameras don't take nice pictures, but somehow these guys actually pulled legit ff quality out of an apsc sensor whereas canon, Sony, and nikkon have not.
They really tuned it to the max.
What is full frame quality?
@@memcrew1 check the dxo evaluation process. They measure color depth, dynamic range, iso performance, and create a score based on these factors. The best apsc sensors barely clip the mid 80s. While the best FF hit the high 90s, it is unprecedented for an apsc to actually hit 90.
@@balboa0621 That’s because Sony, Nikon and Canon don’t put too much R&D into their APC lineup. They treat them as a gateway into their more expensive FF.
@@SD-ft6gs I said apc in regards to photography. Cinema cameras are not the subject of discussion here.
Great review and images. This looks really tempting .....is it still without a "real' shutter ?
Only hardware change is the processor.
Hi Mattias,
does the 26MP sensor have a real global shutter, as stated by Pixii or does it just have a fast readout?
I ask this, because in tests there is banding in pictures if using pulsed led-lights, which should not be the case when using a real global shutter.
Thank you!
Christian
Pretty sure Pixii doesn’t claim the 26mp is a global shutter. Because it’s not.
But it is very fast and I have used fixed LED lights a lot for portraits etc with no banding.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter thank you! Maybe I confused it with the older version of the Pixii which had a different sensor
The first version was a 12mp global shutter.
Does it have auto iso yet?
Soon. It's far up on the future feature wish list.
Coming at a later date.
Is this full frame ?
No, much much better. Its APS-C!
So no weird full frame crop factor. Thank god.
Nice.
Where is Krut?
She passed away last easter.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Aww... Sorry, Mattias! RIP little Krut.
God Jul!
Can I plug it in to my laptop and use it as a Webcam?
Not currently. But wireless live view is coming, so who knows in the future.
Thank you for the nice info, unfortunately the camera doesn’t have the Live view display which is quite essential to check our composition and correct amount of exposure level..
No, it’s not essential at all. Photographers have gotten along without it longer than it’s been available. Like 100 years longer 😀
why do you have two of them?
The lens lock on my Pixii doesn’t engage with three of my Leica lenses. When I’m focusing, the lens can unscrew and just falls off the camera.
It can take three or four button presses just to turn it on and the wireless transfer of the files to my iPad corrupts the photos. They look completely mangled. I thought that updating the firmware might fix my issues but sadly, no.
With the import duties this thing cost me AU$5500. Not impressed at all.
Beautiful.
Fascinating camera, interesting company
Awesome & Thanks :)
Estou apaixonada!!!!
They still can’t make the camera fast enough, it’s constantly sold out. So scaling up is way more complex than just hiring a sales man.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Like you…. :) Even if fatherhood has (to your credit!) slowed down your channel, I still count it as my favorite.
Very nice !
The upgrade costs 320€ in France.
That’s a good deal 👍
@@gearreallydoesntmatter I also think so.
does it work well with kodak gold 200 film?
I really wish they could eventually manage to put out a full frame sensor version.
They definitely could, but for now they choose to focus on APS-C.
These look great, I might pick one up, but tbh It will have to be really damn fun to use for me to pick it over my Panasonic GM5 on the way out the door.
It’s all about the rangefinder. If you don’t enjoy using one of those, don’t get it.
Still waiting for the fullframe version
Full of what?
Price?
I’ve heard €320 for the upgrade.
From this perspective, the Pixii is MORE future-proof than most cameras.
there is not a single pixi reviewer ( nor David ) posting images shot under LED lighting :)
Yes there is. In my review… mic drop.
send me a link please :)@@gearreallydoesntmatter
Its on my channel.
Like your delivery but each time I watch any of your reviews I go to search the price which then reveals a shock. So most cameras over priced. They are cameras simple, would be more interested if they were not the same price of a second hand car and in some cases more than a second hand car .
They cost a lot to make, no way around it.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter you are absolutely correct. Keep up the good work. I enjoy watching and listening to your views.
no one has it yet they are not available for sale.
The first batch with the new processor is expected to ship before Christmas. If you want to find users that own the “old” model you can checkout the Facebook group, we are a growing number in there.
The camera has been available for purchase for about two years now.
Imagine how negative the comments would have been had they put a 128-bit processor in….
Mattias, can you disclose how are you related to this company? Did I just watch a review or an Ad?
I already have many times. I bought my camera at full price like everyone else. Haven’t received a single cent from Pixii. But I communicate with them and help test and suggest regarding their development.
PS. When did I call this a review?
im not intrested unless they make a full frame one.
Noted ;)
I’m vacillating between this and maybe a Q2 Leica for color.
I have a Leica M10M…need a color rangefinder to mate with it…hmmm
This is tempting…just missing autofocus, but, could reuse my M mount lenses with this.
What a shame they don't propose an optional higher viewfinder magnification. 0.67 is good for 16mm shooters. Very weak for 35mm lenses or 50mm.
Sounds like you haven’t looked through one?
@@gearreallydoesntmatter I don't own one if that is your question. No I haven't looked through one! I wish I could. I am really interested in the Pixii but I wouldn't buy one before having it in hands and looking through the viewfinder.
Getting more and more interesting every update. But still no flash possibilities?
It's an electronic shutter only camera. You wouldn't be able to use flash at faster shutter than like 1/30s
@@zupperm I understand. Too bad there isn't a choice between electronic and mechanical shutter. I use a lot subtile fill-in flash. It would make the market for this camera also a bit bigger. Nevertheless still very interesting.
@@zupperm is it a global shutter? Electronic only shutter feels odd.
I'd be willing to try it, but there doesn't seem to be any way to trigger the Pixii remotely except by Bluetooth-hacking, which I haven't figured out yet...
and, as is the norm, no mention of the price of the camera. why is that.... all sorts of info but no mention of the price. funny
Have mentioned it several times. I can’t repeat everything in every single video. They would be an hour long if I did.
Wow, that's a lot of money!
Compared to which rangefinder? 😉
Comparing new and used prices makes little sense to me. The Pixii at least goes up in value currently due to shortage. But imo, buying a camera with resale value as an argument is not a good idea. Better to buy land or gold.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter No, compared to what's in my wallet! 😂 I want every camera out there!

I hope someone will make something like this but with more reasonable price under 1000$ or even under 500$
The focusing mechanism alone costs about $1000 to make, so it would have to be made out of paper or something.
Weren't you somehow involved with Pixii?
I bought my own Pixii at full price like everyone else, I have never received any payment, I can say what ever I want about the camera. Just look at my video listing negatives. But I communicate with them and give feedback on the functionality and development. That’s why I got to test this new processor in advance.
Cheers. Wasn't criticism just seemed to recall you had a disclaimer in a previous video and didn't remember what it was.
Didn’t read it as criticism, just thought it best to be very clear for others reading :)

The Pros using APS-C I’ve seen when working are mostly using Canon 7Dii and Nikon D500. I see Fuji sometimes but rarely.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter I guess it might just be my personal experience here in Australia within the community, but to be generally fair, Apsc is a bit of a rarity compared to full frame for lots of professionals.
It definitely is. Among the public however APS-C DSLR is still king.
