I swear I did not plan this - Leica M11-D just announced today. No screen. 256gb internal storage. $9k. (a lot of advantages over the Pixii FF, but I'm just surprised about the no screen and internal storage similarities).

256GB Internal Storage, but you can stick an SD card in it. I think for longevity of the camera, it's important to have SD card slot in case internal memory fails (it's still flash memory after all)

i dont know how i feel about pixii. I like that it is competion to leica. But pixii is trying to compete even on price without that build quality, image quality and investment sell-point.with fuji xpro-2 you can use "semi" rangefinder expirience (HOVF isnt true OVF) fur much less money. the upgrades are okay i guess, but over time i dont think it is worth it to upgrade every spec of the camera, (sensor, viewfinder, CPU, storage, etc). But that is just my opinion and especialy in photography one can not just be guided by specs but feelings too.

I think some improvements over time AND a price drop would be perfect. With such low quantities, I don't think a price drop is really possible, but I think there are a decent number willing or even wanting to try a no-screen rangefinder digital, but it's gotta have that extra competitive edge over Leica like you're saying

Investment wise I'm guessing the Pixii's may actually hold up pretty well, their rare and something like the Epsom Rangefinders still go for serious money and Pixii will actually upgrade bodies.
The Max as well whilst its more expensive is less of a jump in price than I thought you might see, a new FF Leica by comparison will cost you double this in the UK.

    • @annekedebruyn7797
      @annekedebruyn7797 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

What do you mean with competing on price? Pixii maxima cost almost half of a new M11. The APS-C size is the most affordable way to get into the rangefinder system as it's nearly half the price of the Pixii Maxima.
There is no competition between the Fuji and the actual rangefinders. People go to Pixii or Leica BECAUSE of their real optical rangefinders.
It's a niche not for everyone. But if you are used to and prefer rangefinders but can't get yourself to pay nearly 10k for an M11, the quality is good enough to scratch that itch at half the price.

I love that second reason a lot. It's fun to try something way outside the norm. Unexpected to me, your review really drives home what you're REALLY getting with Leica. I'm like a lot of people who craves one but also dunks on people for having one (the age old duality of humans). But ALL your points about how much legacy learning goes into Leica make it a very interesting conversation.
I also VERY much love the upgrading and component systems part of the conversation. I'm grateful for the video for all you shared with us. Very interesting, the whole experiment, in a genre (or industry) that doesn't reward novelty all that often. Sheesh, another whole thought: we're most in love with the brands that pander. The ones who make IG-focused cameras, as it were. Hmmm .

I remember when it was first announced and super impressive they have managed to continue growing their product list. I think the price is the big issue. I could easily buy a used digital M (might even be able to grab an M10 at this point) and you get a lot more for your money. I have an M11 as my main camera and would be interested in buying a Pixii as a backup and for the unique features like monochrome and no screen, but at the price, it makes way more sense to just buy another M.

With the new 24MP FF sensor, the Pixii is - on the raw image level - practically the same camera as a Sigma FP, Panasonic S9 and first-generation A7c with Leica M-Mount adapters. In some ways, it's even worse than the A7c because of the lack of a mechanical shutter. It all boils down to the optical rangefinder experience and whether it's worth an extra thousands of dollars to you....

Some people who want a rangefinder experience happily pay a *lot* of money for a Leica M11, which shares its sensor with the Sony A7R4, R5, and RC.
If someone *wants* that experience, a standard mirrorless ILC with an M-mount adapter isn't going to scratch the itch. If someone *isn't* invested in the idea of the rangefinder experience, then a Pixii is never going to appeal in the first place, irrespective of the value comparison.
There's *some* value in the comparison, more from a features and image quality perspective in my opinion, but I don't think an A7C with an adapter is an alternative for someone who wants a Pixii.

I just printed the return label for my Pixii. The camera hardware was great. But the range finder patch never lined up with my subject (for some reason it was below the subject? Which have never had before on a rangefinder). And the colors were just too funky for me to deal with. No matter how many adjustments I made, I could never get the colors to come out how I liked them or even to look like how I was seeing them. The app was pretty good, I love not having a screen, and easily swappable eyecups is great.

The lack of mechanical shutter is a concern to me - they have a full-frame sensor now but it isn't fast, so shooting any action might be a problem. That said, I'm not the target audience for these - too expensive for a toy/hobby camera, too limited for a tool.

And with the 24 MP Sony FF sensor (found in the A7iii, A7c, S1/S1H/S5/S5ii/S9, Z6/ii and Sigma fp, among others), the slow sensor readout speed with its pronounced rolling shutter jello effect can be a real problem on a camera without mechanical shutter - for example, when you have driving cars in the background, when you shoot a ball game or have any other subject with fast movement in the frame.

Also it's true that the missing mechanical could cause problems too on Pixii's case, but i don't really have experience using electronic shutter so i don't know how much movement they can handle before clearly showing jello effect.

An interesting camera, but it’s a lot to spend on something just interesting. There do exist some good budget film rangefinder alternatives, fixed lens Japanese models or cheap Soviet system cameras, which get a lot of the rangefinder experience for a much lower price if someone is only shooting occasionally. I feel like you have to really want to shoot a rangefinder a lot for this to be the right camera for someone.
When it comes to memory, I think a lot of folks love internal storage… when it’s paired with removable storage. When you have a backup for when you forgot the SD card on your computer would be amazing. I get why folks are worried about longevity with strictly internal storage. If it fails, you have a brick. Pixii can fix it (but a newish company with uncertain longevity), and maybe with the modular design someone experienced with cell phone repair might be able to, but that’s a much bigger task than just getting a new SD card.
The other elephant in the room is the electronic-only shutter. Which probably doesn’t matter much most of the time for most shooters, but when it does matter it matters a lot.
Ultimately, while I think a Pixie would probably be a lot of fun (I’d go APS-C, Voightlander 21/4 and 40/1.4), I’m not even close to considering one.

Pixii needs to add some form of removable storage option, even if it increases the cost of their cameras. They're honestly really cool cameras, modern digital rangefinders just aren't a thing, and it's cool that they're doing that. There's not many options for M mount cameras that aren't Leicas, and they're doing that. The upgrades they offer are insanely good, and I fully believe every camera brand should be doing that. However the lack of a removable storage option makes me not want to support them at all. Internal storage is all well and good until the components fail, which won't happen for years in most cases, but many people keep the same camera for a very extended period of time, and there's always edge cases from factory duds and such, no QC process is perfect. Yes Pixii offers repairs and replacements, but it's still expensive to get it done, and in the event that Pixii decides to stop offering these repairs and replacements, or the company folds, it's going to be substantially more expensive to find someone who can do a third party repair, if you even can. If that storage chip fails, the entire camera becomes completely useless. A removable storage option absolutely has to be there, so that even if people still prefer the internal storage, they can still fall back on the removable storage should their internal storage stop working for whatever reason. Unless Pixii adds removable storage, I will not consider buying their cameras or recommending them to others, and will actively recommend against them if the topic comes up.

I do believe the Pixii camera M8, M9, MD 262 etc really can help you become a better photographer.
The screens on the of the M8 and M9 are so poor I never use them. You Can permanently leave them off and just use the camera without really using the screen.
It helps you learn the exposure triangle.
I’d like a pixii but I’d rather buy a used M240 or M10 for the price. I have an M8 and M9 already and a Q2M for black and white photography. Plus the M8 is great for black and white as well.
If the base apsc pixii was around the $2000 range is maybe give it a go. But when you can get a gently used leica for Pixii money I’d just go that route.

I looked at rangefinders back in the analog days. Wanted something smaller than a SLR and maybe most important more silent. The problem was that they weren't that much smaller and lighter than a compact SLR. More silent certainly and I liked the form factor, but I also wanted to use tele lenses which basically made the rangefinder unusable for me.
With a rangefinder you're basically limited (for a good experience) to moderate wide angle to short tele, no zooms (I know Leica have/had Tri-Elmars) and even then you can run into problems with some lenses if they have lens hoods on like you showed in the video. IMO the market is shrinking with each limitation, and most would probably prefer a Leica if they could afford it.
Still large enough market left for Pixii? I don't know but I wish them luck. I'd assume that full frame will increase their chances and adding a SD-slot should be easy enough. Maybe adding some features that differentiate them more from a Leica M would be a good move.
One option I'd appreciate is a hybrid viewfinder (similar to what Fuji have done?) that could turn into a EVF with lenses that doesn't work well with the rangefinder mechanism. I've tried add on EVFs on Olympus and Panasonic cameras and at least for me they don't work well and integrated is always there just works much better.

Pixii might have to learn something from Fujifilm and Olympus cause their colours are best in the business, frankly when people say they need a bigger sensor its just a way of coping because they are unhappy with their results, so the biggest knee jerk reaction is just to get a better camera when in reality, the real work has to be done behind the camera, not replace it.

had a good laugh after looking at their page. Got a lot of wacky claims on there. "worlds first true monochrome raw from a digital camera" what exactly makes it "true" ? you do realize a 2 second channel change in photoshop or lightroom, save as dng, and boom same result? I guess it's cool, I just think it's marketing for stupid people.
64-bit processor. No one cares. BIONZ XR or any other ASIC is gonna be way better, 64 bit or not, and also since sony doesn't make that info public we can't even verify that claim - like many claims about this camera, it's just marketing schtick.
Sensor - Apparently it's rated #1 on DxO mark. Okay, then leave a link to the results, if that's true. Also the full frame model is only 24.5MP?? You've got to be kidding me. Cheaping out on the sensor for a camera this expensive, is just ridiculous, and the questionable marketing claims continue.
No SD card slot - okay fine, you're right, internal storage is more reliable. However. Did you not put an SD card slot in because it would've cost more R&D and meant less profit than just chucking in any old smartphone storage, or did you do it for us? Idk man. Say you break your camera. How you gonna get those photos off. Cameras get used outside ya punk. Granted that's never happened to me, but I just think not having a removable storage module is silly, especially for a stills camera. If your camera can shoot like 8K 4:4:4 all-intra 120FPS, fine, sure whatever, I can't expect you to put an m.2 slot on the camera. But it's a stills camera. there's no reason to do this.
BTW Snapiness, none of this is a criticism of you, I know you're just a guy enjoying the camera - I just had no idea they had such bogus marketing.
