Few months ago a bought a fire damaged 2019 Bobcat S70 ( I started with a small machine 😄). I just sandblasted + painted the frame and put the engine back together. Like many said, some parts are just super expensive for no reason (I'm in 8k total). I think I might still be able to sell it with some profit, but at the end of the day a machine with all parts on it, is just the better option. You'll be better of buying an inoperable machine and sell the parts of this machine that are still good. Nevertheless, this is an experience on it's own and I'd do it all over again😂 If you do decide to finish the project, I will watch every episode and root for you!
I bought our bobcat t300 at an auction about six years ago. Flood problem. Farm use, so we really wanted it for drilling fence posts and moving empty palettes for hay. Closed cab is great 👍. 14000 in 2017! Three electrical problems but the field mechanic pulled them and sent them in for remans . Night flood so engine is good. Flood equipment is better and take a professional! Hello from Texas!
One of the things I appreciate about your channel is that you try to show us the good and the bad. You've mentioned it already, but the important thing about experience is to not repeat the bad ones. 😏
As someone who just bought an "as-is" 2018 case tr340 that runs for cheap and was able to fix it cheap I can offer the same advice others have given. Part out whats good, recoup what $$$ you can and start with something that actually works.
Mite be an unlucky purchase, but you are SO lucky to have such a beautiful family! You are so blessed my friend and you are a great father, you can tell your son loves helping you he’s already picking up wrenches and helping dad fix stuff. I really like your thought process, I think me and you are kinda alike on the way we work on stuff, we both also have case 450s lol
i'm a vote for part it out. Modern CTLs do not look fun to work on. I'd save up for a rig with good bones, or live with a lower powered machine, I hear the sub 60 horse power ones get around some of the emmisions requirements, and as long as you aren't doing super heavy rock work or mulching, I think they can do the job well, just a bit slower.
For what it’s worth, do your research on the parts needs for this thing including the simple stuff that you would need in the future if you were to rebuild it such as filters or sensors. I don’t know myself as I have never owned a Bobcat however I follow another TH-camr who just got rid of his small excavator and another Bobcat unit because all the filters for both were only available from Bobcat and in his area there was no dealer coverage. As a result he had to order everything and paid shipping to get it. This was costly compared to his other non Bobcat equipment which he could get filters and most other items from his local parts store. Definitely look into these kinds of items on any machine you are locking into before pulling the trigger. It’s a shame to find this out at this stage but my experience is that fire machines are usually shied away from for this reason unless you need specific parts that were not affected from the fire. Sometimes without putting your own eyes on it though it’s hard to tell what’s salvageable. Good luck.
Man that’s tough, burned machines are such a tempting proposition bcuz their usually dirt cheap but I always remind myself, that cheap for a reason. I have a marketplace addiction tho and if I see something, I’ll say something
fire extinguisher powder is basically salt (sodium). so you have to shot blast everything to get rid of that ! if not you will get rust in all the places where normally no rust will occur. (moisture will get thru paint over time). Good luck !
Very common to overpay at an auction. Also, buy a running machine next time, and think about all the time you could be working making money with it, instead of time spent rebuilding one. Big difference..
Ah man, it didn’t look so bad at first but I don’t think it will ever run again. To many expensive parts gone up in flames. You win some and you lose some ❤
In my experience auction houses/sights (especially in PA) always misrepresent the condition of the equipment. The are also notorious for shill bidding. I have bid as high as 30K on used equipment only to be outbid by a mysterious bidder online and the same equipment repeatedly shows up at the same auction house again and again until they get the price they want. As you have demonstrated the best deals are from private sellers where you can inspect it. The auction house listing that as "medium fire damage" is a farce. That would mean replacement of electrical system and hoses should repair it. Not even close. You are so correct about the fire origination. Keep debris out of the engine/exhaust bay and have a pro fire extinguisher on the equipment. Your channel is awesome. Almost as awesome as the relationship you have with your Dad. Thanks for the content!
I don’t know if you watch C&C Equipment, channel, Clint goes down to a huge auction in Florida and there is a lot of equipment that’s labeled inoperable but it can be fixed! Diesel Creek, Matt buys equipment at an auction and he has a habit of buying inoperable equipment! 75-80% of the items that he buys starts and runs, and it’s a hit and miss thing! But I think these guys would know more about whether you should buy a fire damaged machine or not! I think you should keep looking my friend and check these guys out and see when these auctions go on!
Next time u have to remove a pulley like that use a mixture of 50 acetone and 50 transmission fluid and throw on the heat. Its been a lifesaver in our shop for years
Well it was burned worse than you thought. If you was to rebuild it. You would have pretty much a new machine. But I believe it's past the rebuild point. Great video.
@@krnsssdz I have been in this world for 75 years and here’s what I have learned. Even a small fire generates a lot of radiant heat. Plastic, wiring harnesses, computers and hoses get damaged. At first glance it may not look bad but fire damage is always worse than it looks.
I dont know why anybody hasnt said it but please for the love of god, cut your losses now and run away from this thing!!! I love a good project like anyone else, but there's far far far better things to spend your money on. If you decide to tackle this thing at least you'll have accumulated the required skills to do literally anything with a skidsteer, from the frame up. Lol
From the looks of it, he’s does very well in family and home life. He doesn’t need anybody here to tell him what to do, he already knows what he has. So for the love of god diesejl, continue on as you see fit, you’ll figure out what you want to do.
If he really and truly wanted to "make money with his business" with a CTL, he should have just bought a Takeuchi TL8 or TL10 or something that will run any time there's a paying job. Not a project that will actually keep him from doing other paid work. But a project for TH-cam is a tax deductible expense and gets audiences engaged.
Kudos for the ambition, part it out, and find a better one, I have done my fair share of burns, and the are by far the most expensive to repair, id destroys everything! You will win with your ambition!!
I've just started watching your channel. Two things that can help you move heavy things around on machines are an engine hoist and electric winch or even come along. You may want to hold onto the burned up parts so you can show them to the parts department at the bobcat dealership to get the right size parts that go to that machine and not buy the wrong parts to take back. Also a reference where things go and take pictures.
Those rubber tracks are a lot heavier than they look. We had one pop off once in a field and had to remove completely and move the machine because it was on the side of a hill. They are tough.
As a TH-camr myself and the experience of work that I’ve done on my own machines i think you might be safer part it out, your a great man for giving things a go and I take my hat off to you for that but this one is just going to cost you a small fortune and may never be fully correct mate. I’ll be watching regardless 👍
I'd have to agree with part it out and get what you can out of it. The fire has probably damaged all the seals, o-rings in your hydraulic and hydrostatic systems. If you do continue with this repair/restoration, can you bypass some of the computerized components, or the emissions crap?
At first, I thought that you should part it out, but I like you're thinking. You make money making video content and it would make a great video series as long as you can find a donor machine. They are extremely helpful machines. We're behind you no matter which way you go.
Ouch. That is A LOT of money and time to try and get this Bobcat purring again. I'm not an expert, but i don't think you will get away with less than 20K on parts to replace everything, if you buy original parts. If you want a project that bugs you for months and have the money, go for it. If you want a working skidsteer to help you with other projects, get a different machine.
You might reach out to CC equipment in southern Indiana as they are a stand up business and may look you up something at at a auction as he buys and sells a lot of equipment and they have a TH-cam channel and they also sell new parts 👍
It's amazing that 90% of skidsteers get totalled by fire damage and not anything else. And its most due to negligence since people are too lazy to clean the thing
Grease build up,dust stuck to the grease, leaves stuck to the grease, worn shaft wiper seals on cylinders, leaking hydraulic fluid leaks and then a electric short and poof 🔥
You’re right it happened to me all the time on Facebook marketplace when I purchase stuff like that but it’s a lesson learned always but a adventure ❤ You’re doing a great job
“It’s the only time I have to work, if he wakes up we are done” I felt this one…I have a 78 John Deere I am trying to fix up but everytime I start working on it one kid wakes up
my suggestion finding the correct person at Bobcat who is willing to work with you and help you out. Sponsor or something along that line, it's not impossible but you just need the right person. Maybe partnering with another youtube channel or finding connections via other channels who know someone.. You'll find the right person
I have purchased numerous pieces of damaged equipment, and the rule of thumb is to always assume it's the worst-case scenario. Last year, I purchased a 2023 JCB 3TS8T teleskid and a 2023 JCB hydradig 110w that were damaged in transport. Both pieces of equipment were brand new, and I paid 30k for both machines, and it was a package deal. The teleskid was an easy fix, I had to replace the cab, some glass, and the display screen. I spent $8000 fixing that machine, and the hydradig is another story with much more extensive damage. If I purchased all the parts from JCB, I would spend close to 100k to fix it. I am waiting for the right donor machine to come around, which will provide me with all the parts needed. So far the best deal I have found is 37k for a machine needing a motor, which I might buy.
I have bought several burnt big ticket items. My rule of thumb. If it looks like I can get the burnt parts removed in a day and start cleaning it that day, it is worth restoring. I am afraid you may only have parts to sell.
I would say while you're looking for another T770 or T870 then start trying to rebuild that engine and drive pumps. Who knows, you might end up completing this one before another one pops up and it will make good video content in the meantime.
You have my vote of confidence on taking on this big of a project! If you decide to go through with the project and need parts you might try Cook equipment in Allegan Michigan near Kalamazoo. Good luck!
Just found a t870 2015 for $39,000 it has 2,200 hours on it It was just serviced and it runs amazing. You're wasting your time. You're going to be into that thing as much as a new one costs by the time you're done with everything on it, you're going to be into that thing. $70,000
You said the listing said light fire you should’ve disputed that get your money back this thing was torch curious to see what you do stay in courage I know this is like a punch in the gut but you seem to have the will to get it done so may God be with you and give you strength and wisdom
Good job buying it’s worth that and more in just the parts alone. Also I’ve had two inoperable skid steers delivered they will slide down with some oil.
15 years ago when I still had my diesel shop had a customer that had a 1998 cat skid steer destroyed block he wand us to put in a 4bt because he had one so we did it worked great he said it was better than oe engine we had repowered trucks for years that’s why he came to me you can buy a 4bt for what it would cost for wire harness
You should be able to sell the drive motors, sprockets, engine, and misc parts and break even. Or make a 65 part video series restroing this and gain a ton of subs
Is that a lining bar you’re using to budge it over. I bought a Bobcat T300 project and having a hydraulic problem. Rebuilt the pump and got it working but I have a leak and the right track doesn’t move. I’m gonna be watching this.
Man hang in there, it looks dark but you've got this. Think about this how many people have the balls to even think about doing this. Guess what? I'm sure you've been here before where you thought no way am I going to be able to do this.
This reminds me of a dream I had. Over and over when I was a child traveling farther and farther into space seeing all kinds of amazing stuff but was always scared of traveling to far beyond the point of return. It was actually an amazing adventure. Tried but never could duplicate dreams. Into space. Or understand there meaning. They claim dreams help it would be interesting to see if you will have dreams to remember from this and there meaning. Why does the brain dream.
Everyone makes mistakes the only important thing is what you do about them- I’m sure and hope you take it heads on and get this back to working condition and it will be something positive to look back to whenever you jump into it.
That would be an enormous project. Save any parts you think you may need when you do find a wrecked one. I have a T770 2spd and hi flow. Incredible machines..you won't be dissapointed. Like a little bulldozer. I like bobcats because I have a dealer 10 minutes away. Uncle has a deere, and the electric quick tach is always giving problems. Very frustrating.
Hello, thank you for the video. Interesting situation and purchase. I guess being trained and having worked as an engineer, one might be familiar with tempering metal and what the heat of a fire does to impact that. Given how toasted most of the items were, I would seriously question the strength viability of the frame and about anything that has paint burned off as evidence that it was in the flames. No need risking you life for the structure to have been affected by the heat and fail during use. It could be tragic. Maybe you are seeing things differently in person than what I saw in the video, but I certainly would have to look Very closely before rebuilding and operating this machine like it was originally designed and assembled. My opinion only, take it as you will.
What u could do is find a donor machine and see if u can salvage what is on that machine i did it with my peterbilt 379 still works and drives the same day it rolled off the assembly line
ive seen guys fix burnt machines but by the time they get it fixed they might as well bought a used unburnt machine its alot of nickel and dime stuff on a burnt machine. but idk if anybobcat if worth fixing especially the newer ones since they got bought by doosan
I am a Bobcat operator for life from Grand Rapids, call woodhams equipment in Wayland Michigan ask for Phil he wil tell you all you need to know and where to find parts if he doesn't have them
Tip on breaking bolts loose. Lots of heat and quench it with water. Then reheat it. Other option is wax. That will seep down into the threads better that PB blaster.
Just add a couple of hundred feet of chain and a float, and you have a perfect rig for mooring a yacht! BUT!, on the other hand, the best machine to own is one that you know intimately!
Good luck you are in deep. Basically all you have is a carcass. May want to start your parts list which probably includes an engine/rebuild. The computers and harnesses alone makes this deal scary. Good luck
Me thinks she's pretty crispy! Take it from an old pro, bust it down and part it out. Burn jobs can turn ugly, unless you have a parts machine it'll cost more than a running machine. Your options are find a parts machine or part it out.
If you are looking for a big machine on the cheap then you need to find a 900 series wheeled bobcat or an older 270/280 Deere skid steer and then put on a set of Loegering VTS tracks. Old simple reliable machines that run forever, and the tracks with the steel undercarriage add about 1500 per track/frame so 3k lbs of extra machine weight pushes these big frame machines up to 11k lbs. I have a Deere 270 on VTS. It pushes very well, and lifts great with the extra weight. Have lifted a 4k lb lathe with forks. If you want a strong lift machine its hard to beat Deere for lift power.
I work at a bobcat dealership, and you're right as far as the used auction machine. T870 will run people over the 26k non cdl limit. T770 has less lift capacity but same engine and pumps.
Hm interesting. I have a few questions. 1. I thought I saw for 2014 like I have the kubota engine was different? 2. Why does the 870 put you over the 26,000 limit? 3. What do you think I should do for a machine moving forward?
@dieseJL -your engine being different to what? - the logic with the weight doesn't exactly put it into cdl territory it's the equipment needed to haul it. At 13k you'll need a gooseneck that's rated higher then 20k which at that point with a truck being rated at atleast 10k gvwr you'll be over the 26k limit of gvwr. Yes there is ways to keep it legal under 26k, but you have to very carefully pick out all the equipment in the equation. Such as a bumper pull 16k trailer. - whether you use new or used parts you will be upside down in that machine. Only way I see you don't lose money is you find a machine that had been flipped or has a blown engine or ruined hydraulic system and use the parts from this machine. Without another machine I would not touch the machine you have there's simply nothing there to work off of.
My engine is a kubota v3800, I thought the t770 had a v3400? Good points about the gvwr. I’ll sort that out when I have a machine to move lol. What do you think about me buying a t770 or s850 and using the parts? From what I see a decent amount of the parts cross…?
@dieseJL according to the parts look up the engine part number is one different between a 2014 T770 (7013314) and a 2014 T870 (7013315). T870 having 7hp more, but both being v3800 (same block and head part numbers. I can look further into what the true difference is if you really need me to. I would say you find another machine and buld off that other machine as on the electrical side you'll have to reprogram every controller to the new serial if you decide to move it all to your current machine. It's doable, but I've never had a project like yours come through the shop so I'm not sure exactly how you would scrub the serial off some of those controllers.
ok, this is great info, thanks. It sounds like I could look into a T770 of the same vintage and use some of the parts from my machine. I will hold steady for a machine that needs an engine or hydro or something! Thanks!

But you got a good level out of the deal so yeah, not a bad buy all together, Brandon Bildz just took a tour of a machinery salvage and parts company. You can see the video and name of that company on his channel. They might have a salvage machine for you?
Did a rebuild on a 853 with minor fire damage. Big mistake $$$ wise and I paid 2000 for it. Got it back together and still have it but wouldn’t do it again. Good luck though

If you do decide to finish the project, I will watch every episode and root for you!
😏
Experience is a good teacher but mistakes are extremely good learning lessons you never forget! 👌🏻👍🏻
Watching this made me realize how much I take my forklifts and other equipment for granted to work on other equipment.
i'm a vote for part it out.
Yeah, I’m not as worried as everyone here haha. I’ll get my moneys worth eventually and hopefully pick up a non burnt salvage machine
@ that’s true, you won’t lose on it, just a waiting game like you said.
fire extinguisher powder is basically salt (sodium). so you have to shot blast everything to get rid of that ! if not you will get rust in all the places where normally no rust will occur.
You win some and you lose some ❤
100%
Easier just go to a bobcat or whomever dealer a just purchase a used machine that they serviced etc a what not.
Vs even screwing with auctions.
Thanks for watching!
I have to admire a fellow with confidence in their abilities. I look forward to looking over your shoulder !
I'd say I'm absolutely impressed with the aluminum ramps to hold that forklift. No way I would have trusted them
I was thinking the same thing!
those people that advertised minimal fire damage should be shamed of them selves
A fire is generally not ‘minimal’
Saying “fire damage is minimal” is like saying the Titanic bumped an ice cube
@@albertmcalister9066 it could be, if its put out in time.. for example if 10"x10" area burns damage could be "minimal"🤔
@@krnsssdz I have been in this world for 75 years and here’s what I have learned. Even a small fire generates a lot of radiant heat. Plastic, wiring harnesses, computers and hoses get damaged. At first glance it may not look bad but fire damage is always worse than it looks.
@@albertmcalister9066 yeah you are right in that matter 👍
Part it out and part ways with it. Just count it as a lesson learned.
The item that u removed and set on the loaded from under the cab is the locking mechanism that holds the cab up on the struts when ur raise it.
Lol
🤣🤣🤣🤣 maybe only you. But I would do what he is doing as well.
Oh but this is good for TH-cam content.
From the looks of it, he’s does very well in family and home life. He doesn’t need anybody here to tell him what to do, he already knows what he has. So for the love of god diesejl, continue on as you see fit, you’ll figure out what you want to do.
Naw, anything can be fixed. Just shop around for used parts.
Risk takers make the world go round, I commend you. You win some and lose some, it looks like you win more than you lose , earned a sub
Yeah gotta take the good with the bad!
I think it might be time to price out all the parts and decided if its worth it we just bought a 2014 high flow t870 for 35k delivered
Those rubber tracks are a lot heavier than they look. We had one pop off once in a field and had to remove completely and move the machine because it was on the side of a hill. They are tough.
Thank you. you have showed me never buy a burt machine. unless you go look at it first hand. Good luck.
I am a recovering project junkie and this video makes me feel good about where I am not. God have mercy on you sir.
Interesting project and it's cool to see your VIEWS lighting up and spiking on this video just a day out. Way to go!
Thanks!
You might reach out to CC equipment in southern Indiana as they are a stand up business and may look you up something at at a auction as he buys and sells a lot of equipment and they have a TH-cam channel and they also sell new parts 👍
Him & Clint know each other, Clint has commented on several vids.
Nothing but admiration for you in your endeavor. Just wow! 😮
Super cool and that little guy loves helping
I really like the JD skid steers ! Have run several different kinds .
Use a come along with a chain from center of track to top of can next time. Makes it a easy job to push front roller in
Definitely one of the more ambitious YT projects I've seen, god speed
Lmao
“It’s the only time I have to work, if he wakes up we are done” I felt this one…I have a 78 John Deere I am trying to fix up but everytime I start working on it one kid wakes up
Like clockwork
No matter how rough it looks now, I know you’ll turn it into something amazing. Keep up the great work! 💪
my suggestion finding the correct person at Bobcat who is willing to work with you and help you out.
Yeah, lesson learnt lol
Good luck!
Nothing but admiration. Great video.
Just found a t870 2015 for $39,000 it has 2,200 hours on it It was just serviced and it runs amazing. You're wasting your time. You're going to be into that thing as much as a new one costs by the time you're done with everything on it, you're going to be into that thing. $70,000
Yes 😓
Just found your channel, Assuming you just started. Come to find out, you got this. 98% confident you got this
lol, thanks
Somehow we will figure it out!
Put in a non emissions engine, do the minimum electrical to get the controls/joysticks working
You don't have a clue... None.
What u could do is find a donor machine and see if u can salvage what is on that machine i did it with my peterbilt 379 still works and drives the same day it rolled off the assembly line
Oh man! I feel the pain 🙃 hope you're feeling well after this!!👍
As a TH-camr my self I hope that I never will experience that kind of pressure 😬
ive seen guys fix burnt machines but by the time they get it fixed they might as well bought a used unburnt machine its alot of nickel and dime stuff on a burnt machine. but idk if anybobcat if worth fixing especially the newer ones since they got bought by doosan
I am a Bobcat operator for life from Grand Rapids, call woodhams equipment in Wayland Michigan ask for Phil he wil tell you all you need to know and where to find parts if he doesn't have them
Tak!
Thank you!!
Tip on breaking bolts loose. Lots of heat and quench it with water. Then reheat it.
Other option is wax. That will seep down into the threads better that PB blaster.
Original Bobcat parts are VERY expensive.....I own a Bobcat excavator. I am sure there will be a ton of video on this. Good luck.
Good luck
Is that an oil stain or moisture from the A/C compressor on your driveway?
Big time oil
Me thinks she's pretty crispy! Take it from an old pro, bust it down and part it out. Burn jobs can turn ugly, unless you have a parts machine it'll cost more than a running machine. Your options are find a parts machine or part it out.
I don't know if you have checked with Vanderhaggs, but it anyone has used parts, it'll be them.
A very -expensive costly lesson learned. I have also been through this lesson. I learned it the hard way. Wish you the best in the future.
Thanks! It will all work out… there’s still some good parts
@dieseJL
-your engine being different to what?
Thanks!
These type of videos are good for growing your channel, one benefit of having a channel is over time if you stick with it these videos will return your hard work.
Of course you overpaid and this would not make sense for a non content creator. Your drive to carry through is what will bring the viewers. Supporters and haters alike, be nice to both. :)
I’ve watched several of these in Salvage auctions but never could convince myself to get one. These an old TH-cam video of a guy restoring a completely burnt Cat backhoe. You can watch that for inspiration.
I will have to have a look!
Can you get a pre emissions wire harness and ECU for this? That might save you some money and eliminate future issues
If i make 600 per day and spend 2 days on a project that means im not working. The project better make a good return or worth for me to fix it myself so i can avoid mechanic labor. Time is what im chasing these days. Hopefully you have the time, good luck!
Hello sir, you really have patience. I think you are smarter than what you think. Steve from NB Canada
