Gotta give props on this one . I questioned if my drive motors were working the way they should and looked at the cost of 1 and found it to be over 2K if i did not buy from Bobcat. After watching this video, i decided to tear into it after receiving my new seals from Loader Supply today. While my internals are slightly different on a Bobcat 763, the similarities were enough to adapt and rebuild without any significant problems. I set out to do the suspected worst of the 2, but got thru it easy enough that I decided to do them both in one afternoon. Nice job Sidewayz

@@DrSidewayZ I used just a plain old white candle on exhaust bolts I knew from history will always break so I figured what the hey Pops I'll try it. Sure enough I heated them up and the wax sucked right in there like solder does, and out came the bolts smooth. I tipped him a twelve pack in thanks because I was all braced for at least two breaking and subsequent drill outs. And yes, I know how to tease bolts out with lubricant.
I have been a tech for 40 years but have no Bobcat experience. I searched for this because I have a drive motor(s)? pumping hydraulic fluid into the chain case. Thanks for the video
She’s definitely leaking on you if you have a 743/743b. I ended up messing with these because I found one cheap enough on Facebook marketplace. I’ve been a German car tech for about 11years now. These bobcats are super easy to work on if you can figure out what you’re actually looking at as that seems to be half the battle. I’d definitely recommend doing both drive motor rebuilds at the same time, if you have any issues feel free to leave me a comment.
Definitely helps guys like me that can build any thing but won’t take it apart without knowing exactly what you need and looking for makes the progress a lot smoother for us and you know like we all know how getting parts had been lately so keep at bro we need more coming I can’t afford a new one when I can reman one cheaper
Absolutely! I’m the same way I feel everyone should be able to do things on their own, it only makes you that more prepared as a man should hard times come! I think society as a whole says the contrary this day and age. I think having a guide or at the very least makes you that more prepared for the undertaking! @@DrSidewayZ It does seem that way sometimes. So far I’ve sanded and painted the machine, tore down the seized Kubota v2203 and got it running, tore down the hydrostatic pumps and had them checked. Rebuilt and resealed. All new hoses, plastic and rubber components. A ton of work but it’s coming together. I understand the difficulty tracking down parts. My project has taken a year to get where it is now. Half that time has been waiting on parts…
@@DrSidewayZ The dealer kept trying to sell me a new machine rather than help with getting parts for me. Getting the correct centering plate guides for my machine has taken over a month… it’s almost like they make it so difficult to fix your older machines on purpose only to make you get a new one.

I think if you followed the same playbook (camera angles, part removal, rebuild, tips, watchouts ect) on other common rebuild parts you'd get a lot of views, because you'd build a following. The 763 is a very common machine with lots of people working on it so its a great one to do vids on all the maintenance and rebuilds. I don't own any others but different older machines mixed in with newer ones if you could find opportunities would interest me just so I can learn. Anything still in warranty won't have many people interested. But the most helpful is how you showed how something that seems undoable for must of us can be easy and like I said in my other comment, gave me the confidence to try, and we like seeing inside stuff that we never could unless you show us. @@DrSidewayZ
Love your video! Found it looking around trying to figure out what's happening with my 743B. I feel feedback in the sticks at times.. almost like I'm stalling the engine with the clutch in high gear... But feeling it in the sticks. Also, my hydraulic light is flickering.. trying to figure out what's happening. I just did the lift arm seals. I put a jack under the rear and lifted the arms. Put a tall jack stand under the arms and took the front pins out of the lift cylinders. I pushed in on one and drove the other out as far as it would go. Then tilted it up and took the rod and piston out. Bungee corded the cylinder up to retain fluid, replaced piston seals and cap seals, put it back together and did the other side. Worked like a charm and took a little over an hour. Both lift arm cylinders are no longer leaking and I never had to break a line loose. Only lost a little under a quart of fluid. Wish I would have made a video on it. Thanks for making a great video!!! New sub!
That would have made a great video! It almost sounds like your pump to be honest, first I would check the brass filter that leads out of the pump and see if it has a blockage but honestly rebuilding the drive motors may be a good start as just how easy it is. @@DrSidewayZ I ordered drive motor seals from Bobcat. $91 and some change for each set. I also ordered steering bushings and cam inserts. I found that there was a wire coming across the top of the pump that was disconnected. Looking at the wiring schematic, it goes to a temp sensor. It was grounding out on the frame intermittently causing the light. I can't seem to find the temp sensor but figured I would clean it all out and when I work on the steering linkage, I will find it. The drive motor rebuild is a cheap and easy maintenance item that is probably over due. It has over 6000 hrs on it. If it needs a pump, then I may do that later too. I resealed the spool valves about 2200hrs ago. It's been a great machine and I want to keep it happy and healthy as long as possible. I also noticed that around the injectors there's a bit of dampness. Any ideas? I'm happy I found your channel! It's been a great help! Recently I bought an Agrotk 680 hydraulic breaker from Toolots. I was a little afraid since it seemed so cheap. It turns out it was a great purchase. That breaker is a little heavy for the machine buy it sure packs a punch! I was breaking out 12x18" footings without much effort! Helped a neighbor dig a septic in rock. It was a sedimentary concrete conglomerate and we had to go six feet down in it. I broke out a six foot wide, six foot deep, 60 foot long area. That breaker paid for itself quickly! Cheers!!!
Great video....to the point. Some guys are just too long winded for me. I just bought a 743b used and starting to see the leakages and what not it was guaranteed to have. I'll be working them out one at a time. But it runs great!!
Thanks, especially some encouragement. Doing a 643, some pretty big differences in removal. Having some trouble removing the keyed gear shaft from the pump. On the 643 the whole shaft and gears comes out. The inside simular. Again thanks
i just bought a 742 today , drives bad , i saw your other video on the levers , so plan on doing both , the motors and the lever timing/bushings , i work on drag cars , and skid steer is a whole different ball game , but i see it is relatively simple

Big thanks. I have a late 90's or early 2000's 753. The thing moves slow in forward direction (fast paced walk at best) and only slightly faster in reverse. Watched another rebuild video where the guy didn't know what the two smaller O-rings were for but you did (about the 14:30 to 17:30 mark in your vid). Once the winter is over and the thing will sit for most of the summer I plan to do this rebuild; thanks to you and some other vids that boosted my confidence. Apparently there is a filter on the smaller line where it attaches to the drive motor on some models, for others it is under the cab seat. Just wondering if that starts to plug up it might starve the motors for fluid and power. Keep up the vids. Just subbed.
Thanks I definitely appreciate you taking the time to drop a comment! It’s definitely something you can manage, I would recommend swinging by lowes home improvement and grabbing a cement mixing vat, it will catch any fluid that drains out as you’re disassembling it and potentially any of the little check balls and springs should yours have it plus keep your work area clean. So there possibly are brass filter’s depending on your model, easiest thing I’ve found to do is hop on bobcat parts online and plug in your unit serial and try to search for the filter it should show you where it is. With it being a brass filter you can’t really clean it imagine you took a lot of brass shavings and compress them together that’s essentially what the membrane is in the filter so any debris work into it and you can’t really get it back out as it acts like fish hooks and traps the debris, so I’d definitely recommend replacing them. That filter you are referring to is the case drain filter and there should be one for each drive motor on the machine each in silver hosuings, the case drain just takes the internal leakage of hydraulic oil from the drive motor and returns it to tank to stop the motor pressurising and blowing out seals/causing damage. It does not deliver flow to the drive motor. Definitely worth replacing the filters while you are there and check for wear material which could indicate potential damage. Those filters can catch wear particles and reduce the amount of contamination in your hydraulic system in the event of a drive motor failure
@@A.and.H.Adventures so you’ll have a little come out honestly what I did was take two rubber gloves and just taped them around the end of the lines to catch and hold any fluid that comes out, with the machine off the lines shouldn’t have anything in them except what has been already pumped into them

It’s honestly not bad man but I’d highly recommend doing both I did one side and then it blew the opposite side out I guess from it being newly sealed and passing that pressure on down the line. If you follow the vid you should be able to knock it out with relative ease. Just make sure to have a torch, vise and a decent work table
Your narration is remarkably good for such a small/young channel, I would though caution you on your use of background music, the wrong music/volume can make your video unwatchable to many people, some forego the music and use their narration and ambient sounds of them working to carry the video. Hey Jim hope you’re having a good one, you’ll be glad once you’re done it’s def going to be like a new machine! Honestly if you take your time you shouldn’t have any issues I would recommend disassembling it in a little tray or baking pan in the even you drop one of the little bbs it will be easy to locate aside from that you should be able to knock it out with ease, just follow the steps in the video and you should be golden. So jacking up the one side and putting it on some harbor freight jackstands on level ground I was able to get by without having to drain the case. Hopefully that helps some

Hi! Nice video. Simple and to the point I have a question My one drive side is going weak, its happened before and i had the dealer rebuild the motor. 2 years ago. So i asked the dealer if its something i could do. He said rebuilding the seals in the motor is easy, but the timing part is whats difficult . Said if the timing is wrong itll screw up the machine I have a bobcat s100 2012 . Didnt see or hear anything in your vid about timing. What am i missing ??

Couldn’t hurt, sounds like either you’re not building enough pressure or the pressure is bleeding off around the orings, this is definitely the cheaper route in diagnosing it, mine would buck almost like you’re trying to start a car in 2nd or 3rd gear from a standstill

I saw the mechanics doing this but man you made it so easy to follow, thanks! One question, how do you know if the drive motor is bad, or if the seal kit won't fix it? What does a shelled out drive motor look like?
So with this particular drive motor you honestly have to get foreign substances introduced into it to really wipe the vanes but even then the vanes are cylindrical round stock that’s machined to tight tolerances so the potential for it to bleed from one port to the next is extremely rare. Most of the time the the rubber orings just dry out and the Teflon backed is allowed to move about until the hydraulic pressure is able to shear the seals and then it’s able to bleed off pressure with no fail safe to catch it so it would feel like if you’re starting a manual car out in second or third gear because essentially you would be just on the second and third stage of the pump valving. Honestly I’d recommend doing it on any new machine you get or even if you have a old one sitting around it’s easy to do. Hopefully that helps some

The concept should be the same while there may be some inherent differences between the motors it should get you on target it might not be a bullseye but once you get in there if you apply these concepts you shouldn’t have any issues.
Question - The parts manual shows a seal that sits in the groove where the two check balls are. I didn't see a seal there when you opened it up and I don't have one in mine either. Have you seen this seal used possibly in a different version?

No problem glad to help, so it would buck and not drive forward smoothly, almost like if you were driving a manual car and stared out in second gear. After doing the seals and bushings it operates great now, are you able to see where it’s leaking at? Is there anyway it could be a hydraulic line?
Haven't had anything to do with Toyota skid steers but assuming it's the same as a Bobcat it sounds like the carrier seals between the drive motor and chaincase are leaking and letting hyd fluid bypass into the chaincase instead of returning to tank via the drive motor hoses and case drain. Could be quite a big job depending on how the Toyotas are designed

On the 743 and 743b I know for a fact it doesn’t idk about other models but the 743 generation is literally what could be described as a water wheel style drive motor
question. is there only one part number for these motors? Is that it located on the outer side of the pump? My apologies, i will rephrase the question. Yes i know theyare separate to the main pump. I have had engine and pump out of mine. One thing I didn't do was referb the wheel motors. Are they branded, type and serial number on the actual motor? Again, great job.
So these 743b only have one style motor that they were produced with, so they work remote of the pump the pump is bolted to the engine these work remote with a hydraulic feed and return these are bolted to the lower case of the bobcat aka the chain case and they index into sprockets that have extremely beefy bike chains that drive the wheels
No the drive motor just indexes into the the side of the underbody what the shaft slides into is a chain sprocket that attaches to the drive axles inside the chain case. It doesn’t have to be timed there is a feed and return so essentially think of it as a water wheel, fluid comes in runs the drive motor and exits the drive motor assembly.

It’s in the description but the lovely TH-cam update made the description hard to find, Today Im going to be rebuilding my drive motor on my Bobcat 743B, the 743 should be identical. I recently rebuilt my left drive motor which is essentially identical to this DIY just a mirrored version of the right pump. Loader parts source which I am not affiliated in any way with has the best bang for the buck kit on the market the factory bobcat kit is insanely expensive and obviously not really worth it with this one coming in so cheap. To Do this rebuild you will need. 1. Breaker bar 1/2" 2. SAE standard Allen/Hex sockets 3. SAE socket set 4. 1/2" to 3/8" socket reducer 5. Various 1/2" extensions 6. Impact gun however not necessary will make your job easier 7. Heat source, I used a acetylene torch a map torch will be just as effective 8. A workbench or a vice secured so you can break pump bolts loose 9. Two large adjustable crescent wrenches 10. Some Dielectric grease as this type of grease will not swell the o-rings and provides enough lubrication. In regards to the stuck bolts: You'll call me a liar but a old timer taught me to use wax after I heat up the bolt. Does amazing work on them.

@@DrSidewayZ I used just a plain old white candle on exhaust bolts I knew from history will always break so I figured what the hey Pops I'll try it. Sure enough I heated them up and the wax sucked right in there like solder does, and out came the bolts smooth. I tipped him a twelve pack in thanks because I was all braced for at least two breaking and subsequent drill outs. And yes, I know how to tease bolts out with lubricant.

She’s definitely leaking on you if you have a 743/743b. I ended up messing with these because I found one cheap enough on Facebook marketplace. I’ve been a German car tech for about 11years now. These bobcats are super easy to work on if you can figure out what you’re actually looking at as that seems to be half the battle. I’d definitely recommend doing both drive motor rebuilds at the same time, if you have any issues feel free to leave me a comment.

I think society as a whole says the contrary this day and age. I think having a guide or at the very least makes you that more prepared for the undertaking! @@DrSidewayZ It does seem that way sometimes. So far I’ve sanded and painted the machine, tore down the seized Kubota v2203 and got it running, tore down the hydrostatic pumps and had them checked. Rebuilt and resealed. All new hoses, plastic and rubber components. A ton of work but it’s coming together. I understand the difficulty tracking down parts. My project has taken a year to get where it is now. Half that time has been waiting on parts…
Man getting parts here lately has been a complete disaster! Dang sounds like it will be good as new once you’re back together!
@@DrSidewayZ The dealer kept trying to sell me a new machine rather than help with getting parts for me. Getting the correct centering plate guides for my machine has taken over a month… it’s almost like they make it so difficult to fix your older machines on purpose only to make you get a new one.
Honestly I prefer the old mechanical beasts over the new electric everything days, sure certain features are nice but good luck with a field repair

I think if you followed the same playbook (camera angles, part removal, rebuild, tips, watchouts ect) on other common rebuild parts you'd get a lot of views, because you'd build a following. The 763 is a very common machine with lots of people working on it so its a great one to do vids on all the maintenance and rebuilds. I don't own any others but different older machines mixed in with newer ones if you could find opportunities would interest me just so I can learn. Anything still in warranty won't have many people interested. But the most helpful is how you showed how something that seems undoable for must of us can be easy and like I said in my other comment, gave me the confidence to try, and we like seeing inside stuff that we never could unless you show us. @@DrSidewayZ
Love your video! Found it looking around trying to figure out what's happening with my 743B. I feel feedback in the sticks at times.. almost like I'm stalling the engine with the clutch in high gear... But feeling it in the sticks. Also, my hydraulic light is flickering.. trying to figure out what's happening.
I just did the lift arm seals. I put a jack under the rear and lifted the arms. Put a tall jack stand under the arms and took the front pins out of the lift cylinders. I pushed in on one and drove the other out as far as it would go. Then tilted it up and took the rod and piston out. Bungee corded the cylinder up to retain fluid, replaced piston seals and cap seals, put it back together and did the other side. Worked like a charm and took a little over an hour. Both lift arm cylinders are no longer leaking and I never had to break a line loose. Only lost a little under a quart of fluid. Wish I would have made a video on it.

It almost sounds like your pump to be honest, first I would check the brass filter that leads out of the pump and see if it has a blockage but honestly rebuilding the drive motors may be a good start as just how easy it is. @@DrSidewayZ I ordered drive motor seals from Bobcat. $91 and some change for each set. I also ordered steering bushings and cam inserts. I found that there was a wire coming across the top of the pump that was disconnected. Looking at the wiring schematic, it goes to a temp sensor. It was grounding out on the frame intermittently causing the light. I can't seem to find the temp sensor but figured I would clean it all out and when I work on the steering linkage, I will find it. The drive motor rebuild is a cheap and easy maintenance item that is probably over due. It has over 6000 hrs on it. If it needs a pump, then I may do that later too. I resealed the spool valves about 2200hrs ago. It's been a great machine and I want to keep it happy and healthy as long as possible. I also noticed that around the injectors there's a bit of dampness. Any ideas? I'm happy I found your channel! It's been a great help! Recently I bought an Agrotk 680 hydraulic breaker from Toolots. I was a little afraid since it seemed so cheap. It turns out it was a great purchase. That breaker is a little heavy for the machine buy it sure packs a punch! I was breaking out 12x18" footings without much effort! Helped a neighbor dig a septic in rock. It was a sedimentary concrete conglomerate and we had to go six feet down in it. I broke out a six foot wide, six foot deep, 60 foot long area. That breaker paid for itself quickly!

Big thanks. I have a late 90's or early 2000's 753. The thing moves slow in forward direction (fast paced walk at best) and only slightly faster in reverse. Watched another rebuild video where the guy didn't know what the two smaller O-rings were for but you did (about the 14:30 to 17:30 mark in your vid). Once the winter is over and the thing will sit for most of the summer I plan to do this rebuild; thanks to you and some other vids that boosted my confidence. Apparently there is a filter on the smaller line where it attaches to the drive motor on some models, for others it is under the cab seat. Just wondering if that starts to plug up it might starve the motors for fluid and power.

It’s definitely something you can manage, I would recommend swinging by lowes home improvement and grabbing a cement mixing vat, it will catch any fluid that drains out as you’re disassembling it and potentially any of the little check balls and springs should yours have it plus keep your work area clean. So there possibly are brass filter’s depending on your model, easiest thing I’ve found to do is hop on bobcat parts online and plug in your unit serial and try to search for the filter it should show you where it is. With it being a brass filter you can’t really clean it imagine you took a lot of brass shavings and compress them together that’s essentially what the membrane is in the filter so any debris work into it and you can’t really get it back out as it acts like fish hooks and traps the debris, so I’d definitely recommend replacing them. That filter you are referring to is the case drain filter and there should be one for each drive motor on the machine each in silver hosuings, the case drain just takes the internal leakage of hydraulic oil from the drive motor and returns it to tank to stop the motor pressurising and blowing out seals/causing damage. It does not deliver flow to the drive motor. Definitely worth replacing the filters while you are there and check for wear material which could indicate potential damage. Those filters can catch wear particles and reduce the amount of contamination in your hydraulic system in the event of a drive motor failure

@@A.and.H.Adventures so you’ll have a little come out honestly what I did was take two rubber gloves and just taped them around the end of the lines to catch and hold any fluid that comes out, with the machine off the lines shouldn’t have anything in them except what has been already pumped into them

It’s honestly not bad man but I’d highly recommend doing both I did one side and then it blew the opposite side out I guess from it being newly sealed and passing that pressure on down the line. If you follow the vid you should be able to knock it out with relative ease. Just make sure to have a torch, vise and a decent work table

Honestly if you take your time you shouldn’t have any issues I would recommend disassembling it in a little tray or baking pan in the even you drop one of the little bbs it will be easy to locate aside from that you should be able to knock it out with ease, just follow the steps in the video and you should be golden. So jacking up the one side and putting it on some harbor freight jackstands on level ground I was able to get by without having to drain the case. Hopefully that helps some

Couldn’t hurt, sounds like either you’re not building enough pressure or the pressure is bleeding off around the orings, this is definitely the cheaper route in diagnosing it, mine would buck almost like you’re trying to start a car in 2nd or 3rd gear from a standstill

That’s what mine was doing prior to rebuilding these
I saw the mechanics doing this but man you made it so easy to follow, thanks! One question, how do you know if the drive motor is bad, or if the seal kit won't fix it? What does a shelled out drive motor look like?
So with this particular drive motor you honestly have to get foreign substances introduced into it to really wipe the vanes but even then the vanes are cylindrical round stock that’s machined to tight tolerances so the potential for it to bleed from one port to the next is extremely rare. Most of the time the the rubber orings just dry out and the Teflon backed is allowed to move about until the hydraulic pressure is able to shear the seals and then it’s able to bleed off pressure with no fail safe to catch it so it would feel like if you’re starting a manual car out in second or third gear because essentially you would be just on the second and third stage of the pump valving. Honestly I’d recommend doing it on any new machine you get or even if you have a old one sitting around it’s easy to do. Hopefully that helps some

I have a basket case, New Holland Skid Steer 2011 model year LX 565. I am betting I will need to work on the drive pumps. Do you know if the process in your utube production will be similar? Thanks Tim
The concept should be the same while there may be some inherent differences between the motors it should get you on target it might not be a bullseye but once you get in there if you apply these concepts you shouldn’t have any issues.

Question - The parts manual shows a seal that sits in the groove where the two check balls are. I didn't see a seal there when you opened it up and I don't have one in mine either. Have you seen this seal used possibly in a different version?
I’d venture to say it’s a different model I see no reason for a seal to exist there or where it would even sit.
One thing I didn't see. Mark the cases and put them back in the same orientation.

So I’m honestly not sure, possibly it does look like the hydrostatic drive motors are like that from just a simple google image search
HI , Thanks for your video really appreciate it I have a Toyota SDK7 and the hydraulic motor was leaking into the chain sump , your video shows a motor that's like mine with a seal i did not see until i watched you take it out ,hopefully this is my problem . just wondering what was the problem with yours? cheers from South Australia
No problem glad to help, so it would buck and not drive forward smoothly, almost like if you were driving a manual car and stared out in second gear. After doing the seals and bushings it operates great now, are you able to see where it’s leaking at? Is there anyway it could be a hydraulic line?
Haven't had anything to do with Toyota skid steers but assuming it's the same as a Bobcat it sounds like the carrier seals between the drive motor and chaincase are leaking and letting hyd fluid bypass into the chaincase instead of returning to tank via the drive motor hoses and case drain. Could be quite a big job depending on how the Toyotas are designed

On the 743 and 743b I know for a fact it doesn’t idk about other models but the 743 generation is literally what could be described as a water wheel style drive motor
question. is there only one part number for these motors? Is that it located on the outer side of the pump?
My apologies, i will rephrase the question. Yes i know theyare separate to the main pump. I have had engine and pump out of mine. One thing I didn't do was referb the wheel motors. Are they branded, type and serial number on the actual motor?

So these 743b only have one style motor that they were produced with, so they work remote of the pump the pump is bolted to the engine these work remote with a hydraulic feed and return these are bolted to the lower case of the bobcat aka the chain case and they index into sprockets that have extremely beefy bike chains that drive the wheels
wen you go back together with the complete pump assembly did you have to time the pump in any manner?? thanks
No the drive motor just indexes into the the side of the underbody what the shaft slides into is a chain sprocket that attaches to the drive axles inside the chain case. It doesn’t have to be timed there is a feed and return so essentially think of it as a water wheel, fluid comes in runs the drive motor and exits the drive motor assembly.
@@DrSidewayZ ok but I mean the 3 parts of the pump itself flange valve body and top of pump. Do you just line up 2 drain holes n bolt it back together

It’s in the description but the lovely TH-cam update made the description hard to find,
Today Im going to be rebuilding my drive motor on my Bobcat 743B, the 743 should be identical. I recently rebuilt my left drive motor which is essentially identical to this DIY just a mirrored version of the right pump. Loader parts source which I am not affiliated in any way with has the best bang for the buck kit on the market the factory bobcat kit is insanely expensive and obviously not really worth it with this one coming in so cheap.
To Do this rebuild you will need.
1. Breaker bar 1/2"
2. SAE standard Allen/Hex sockets
3. SAE socket set
4. 1/2" to 3/8" socket reducer
5. Various 1/2" extensions
6. Impact gun however not necessary will make your job easier
7. Heat source, I used a acetylene torch a map torch will be just as effective
8. A workbench or a vice secured so you can break pump bolts loose
9. Two large adjustable crescent wrenches
10. Some Dielectric grease as this type of grease will not swell the o-rings and provides enough lubrication.
