This is not you but me. You explained that brilliantly. It’s just my brain still doesn’t get it but my dyslexia plays a part in that. I didn’t get it during piano lessons as a child either. I get someone else to play it then I know how it goes and copy it 👍🏼

Brilliant. I got a Roland FP 30x last year at Christmas. I've tried learning on my own and can read notes. I'm trying to learn a few Christmas songs for my 1 year anniversary. My playing is so choppy. I realize in part it's because I never understood rhythm and time signatures. It seemed advanced until I watched your videos. Hopefully this will help my playing sound more natural. Thank you. It would be great to offer laminated posters on time signatures and rhythm. Best videos on TH-cam! Please do a video on how to set metronome to match songs time signatures.

Oh thank you so much...40 years I have been trying to understand time signatures!! So top number is how many beats...bottom number the type of note and how many of them go in the bar?
Yup! You got it! If you think of it like a pie, and you cut the pie into 4 pieces. Each beat is a piece of the pie and the measure is the pie plate, the structure that holds the pie. :)

Hi I am a beginner, I have a question relating to Time Signature.
If I see a video with only written letters (ie, E,F,D etc) with no music sheet, how does a person determine which Time Signature to write the music sheet. Which thing decides this and why?
In Turkey we like 2 more different time signatures:
9/8 which is known as the Roman/Gypsy Dance Music Rhythm and very lovely & moving melodies have this time signature
7/8 is the rhythm used in the folkloric dances in Blacksea Region

I'm a beginner, started about one month ago. I go every week to 30 minute sessions.
For playing, singing, reading I like the basic ones? 4/4 and 3/4 because I'm not a super advanced music reader but I like strange time signatures for listening...I love that up in the air feeling when the meter gets mixed up. Most common example is Money by Pink Floyd. I think its in 7/4 time. There are some excellent 6/8 rock tunes too. Rock drummers love 6/8. I also love that sensation of triplets. (3 beats in the span of 2) it usually sounds very emphatic.
Can someone please explain cut time? I never could grasp it. My band directors would just say read it like 4/4 but play it faster. 😨 Its an explanation that never sat well with me.

Does beats mean how many times you press the chord?
Like for example a whole note is 4 beats, so it means to press the chord 4 times?
Not quite, but close! A beat is the basic unit of musical time. It tells how fast the music is (it's like the beating of a heart -- or what you tap your foot to).
So in 4/4 time, there are 4 beats in a measure, and each beat is a quarter note.
A whole note is 4 beats -- but instead of playing it 4 times we would play it once and HOLD it down for 4 beats. So we play it for the WHOLE 4 beats (that's where the name is from).
A quarter note is one beat. So we would play that 4 times in a measure. A half note is two beats, so we would play it twice in a measure. I hope that helps!

Do you mean the number at the bottom of each time signature? That tell us what TYPE of note represents one "beat". So in 4/4 the BOTTOM 4 tells us that quarter notes = 1 beat, and the top 4 tells us that there are 4 beats in each measure.
3/4 means that quarter notes still = 1 beat (because the 4 is at the bottom), but this time there are only 3 of them in each measure.

can I use word "bar" instead measure?
Struggling to understand the 6/8 time signature, confused that quarter notes can fit in an 8th note space. Also the dot after quarter note makes it 1 1/2 beats, not sure how they can fit in the spaces.
I expected rapid clapping for each of the spaces…
I think I understood all the previous time signatures, probably have to watch 100 times before sinks in?

5:31 why that note count as 1,2,3 I thought it would be 1 and a half beat. (Idk if you understand this question but on 2/4 the 2nd and 3rd note is count as 1 but not 2.)
By what you explained the time signature of a song can be represented by the top number alone, why do you still need the bottom number?

Why do we need to know the number of beats if the note already shows the length. If we didn’t have the number of beats written, we would still be able to play the song the same way. Could you please explain the importance of it?
