FILM DESCRIPTION:
The life of 11-year-old Billy Elliot, a coal miner's son in Northern England, is forever changed one day when he stumbles upon a ballet class during his weekly boxing lesson. Before long, he finds himself in dance, demonstrating the kind of raw talent seldom seen by the class' exacting instructor, Mrs. Wilkinson. With a tart tongue and a never-ending stream of cigarettes in her hand, Mrs. Wilkinson's zest for teaching is revived when she sees Billy's potential.

For me, the actor who plays Billy's dad makes the movie. He is just perfect in this role.

Gary Lewis. I have always loved his performances (e.g. the first two seasons of Outlander) and could never understand why he never got bigger roles.

Greatest and toughest life training there is.
In 2002, when my daughter was 12, and after dancing from age 5, she auditioned for the Australian Ballet. There were 2800 applicants and to apply, an applicant had to have won at least one 1st place at a national Eisteddfod and be top placed in the international discipline.
We arrived at 7.30 am and they took groups of ten, and group by group, all day they were rejected. Finally at 10pm that night. I was alone in the foyer wondering what happened. One of the examiners came out and spoke to me. She asked me to follow her. We went into the rehearsal room and there was my daughter holding the acceptance letter and smiling at me. I thought I would need an ambulance.
Later that year, she appeared in The Nutcracker at the Sydney Opera House for a full 9 week season, and managed to do well all through school at the same time. At 20 years of age she ruptured a disk in her back in rehearsal for Swan Lake. It was the end. As we left the hospital she grabbed my arm and looked at me. "We'll that was fun, Dad. I enrolled in uni yesterday." She is now a successful barrister in London at age 34.

The way he’s overwhelmed and happy and sad all at the same time. Jamie Bell was the perfect Billy!
It is the bittersweetness of the moment. On one hand he finally has the chance to pursue his passion. On the other, he realizes that he'll have to leave his family behind.
When he leaves on the bus, it's the same. This is just a wonderful, wonderful movie.
The facial expressions of these actors were just phenomenal. I love looking at the three in the kitchen over and over.
And of course when Billy says tearfully, "I got in."
Best part of this scene is Billy's brother standing there drying the dishes.... because we know he's never done that before in his life!! Wonderful movie.

My dad did this with my uni letter back in 2008, in almost the exact same way. Even though it was the fastest he'd ever told me something after walking into the house.
My mum would have 100% opened it, bless her.
Wonderful film. Great acting by everyone! The final scene with Billy, grown and his ‘jump ‘ onto the stage performing Swan Lake just took my breath away….

My mother opened my acceptance letters for orchestras and camps and high schools. I walked barefoot in the snow to the mailbox to get my college letter before she did.

I can’t remember her name but she used to be in When the boat comes in, during the 70’s we used to watch it as a family, she used to remind me of my mother as they looked very similar and my Mum was from the North West Coast of England.

I know exactly how Billy felt on seeing the envelope propped up there. It was the same for me the day my A-Level results came - had to really force myself to open it, then dreaded having to unfold the paper inside to see what it said. (I got in, too.)
1:11 tension so well written and acted. Each one of them, the father, the brother, and the grandma has different ways of dealing with it.
To think that every year someone new is getting such a letter.

Whoever were involved in creating this film are the real MVP. It never felt like a film at all, but as real as can be, and will always have a special place in my heart.
I saw this film in our local theatre and for reasons I could never identify, it moved me profoundly - moved me to tears, actually. I had the same reaction watching this clip. It's time to revisit the entire film . . . .

A small film. Barely a blip. But, as is often the case, small films like these make the greatest impact. I could name many films like this that are filled with emotion, that, when done, leave the viewer with an abiding love of great film. To quote Selma Diamond on Night Court: "I laughed. I cried. It became a part of me."

I’ve seen many movies, being 74. This one is in my top five? Maybe top 3 ever. The actors are brilliant. The lad who plays Billy is note perfect. It’s heartbreaking and funny and utterly real. What an achievement.

If you've ever got a University acceptance letter you'll understand every bit of this.
Your usually very calm and relaxed father (in my case) barely managing to keep his heartrate down, despite having clearly waited ages on edge for you to come back. Taking the letter in the other room because you didn't want to be seen reading it if it was negative.
Billy was overwhelmed.
