It is the bittersweetness of the moment. On one hand he finally has the chance to pursue his passion. On the other, he realizes that he'll have to leave his family behind.
The facial expressions of these actors were just phenomenal. I love looking at the three in the kitchen over and over. And of course when Billy says tearfully, "I got in."
Greatest and toughest life training there is. In 2002, when my daughter was 12, and after dancing from age 5, she auditioned for the Australian Ballet. There were 2800 applicants and to apply, an applicant had to have won at least one 1st place at a national Eisteddfod and be top placed in the international discipline. We arrived at 7.30 am and they took groups of ten, and group by group, all day they were rejected. Finally at 10pm that night. I was alone in the foyer wondering what happened. One of the examiners came out and spoke to me. She asked me to follow her. We went into the rehearsal room and there was my daughter holding the acceptance letter and smiling at me. I thought I would need an ambulance. Later that year, she appeared in The Nutcracker at the Sydney Opera House for a full 9 week season, and managed to do well all through school at the same time. At 20 years of age she ruptured a disk in her back in rehearsal for Swan Lake. It was the end. As we left the hospital she grabbed my arm and looked at me. "We'll that was fun, Dad. I enrolled in uni yesterday." She is now a successful barrister in London at age 34.
Ahh such a lovely story 💕 I'm so glad ur daughter managed to overcome her accident & make good of her life after ballet more power to her & happiness!! 😁👍👌
My mother opened my acceptance letters for orchestras and camps and high schools. I walked barefoot in the snow to the mailbox to get my college letter before she did.
My dad did this with my uni letter back in 2008, in almost the exact same way. Even though it was the fastest he'd ever told me something after walking into the house. My mum would have 100% opened it, bless her.
Best part of this scene is Billy's brother standing there drying the dishes.... because we know he's never done that before in his life!! Wonderful movie.
Wonderful film. Great acting by everyone! The final scene with Billy, grown and his ‘jump ‘ onto the stage performing Swan Lake just took my breath away….
I’ve seen many movies, being 74. This one is in my top five? Maybe top 3 ever. The actors are brilliant. The lad who plays Billy is note perfect. It’s heartbreaking and funny and utterly real. What an achievement.
When everyone wants to know the contents of your letter asap but wait impatiently for you to arrive and open it since it's yours but you don’t feel like reading your letter in front of them 😅
Even though there’s barely any talking, this is a brilliantly performed scene. While he was reading the letter, I genuinely couldn’t tell whether he was disappointed or happy.
I saw this film in our local theatre and for reasons I could never identify, it moved me profoundly - moved me to tears, actually. I had the same reaction watching this clip. It's time to revisit the entire film . . . .
A small film. Barely a blip. But, as is often the case, small films like these make the greatest impact. I could name many films like this that are filled with emotion, that, when done, leave the viewer with an abiding love of great film. To quote Selma Diamond on Night Court: "I laughed. I cried. It became a part of me."
I can’t remember her name but she used to be in When the boat comes in, during the 70’s we used to watch it as a family, she used to remind me of my mother as they looked very similar and my Mum was from the North West Coast of England.
I love how this film kicked off Jamie bells career so beautifully and that it was not a fluke I always look forward to watching every single thing he performs in 😊
I know exactly how Billy felt on seeing the envelope propped up there. It was the same for me the day my A-Level results came - had to really force myself to open it, then dreaded having to unfold the paper inside to see what it said. (I got in, too.)
Leyendas de pasión y ésta película son las únicas que han logrado emocionarme y lo llamativo es que me sucede lo mismo al volverlas a ver. Excelentes actores
If you've ever got a University acceptance letter you'll understand every bit of this. Your usually very calm and relaxed father (in my case) barely managing to keep his heartrate down, despite having clearly waited ages on edge for you to come back. Taking the letter in the other room because you didn't want to be seen reading it if it was negative.
The way he’s overwhelmed and happy and sad all at the same time. Jamie Bell was the perfect Billy!
It is the bittersweetness of the moment. On one hand he finally has the chance to pursue his passion. On the other, he realizes that he'll have to leave his family behind.
When he leaves on the bus, it's the same. This is just a wonderful, wonderful movie.
For me, the actor who plays Billy's dad makes the movie. He is just perfect in this role.
His expressions are amazing
The actor who played Billy Elliott dad shud v won a bafta, very much overlooked n it needs to rectified... x
Jamie Bell is the best. Such an underrated actor
Gary Lewis. I have always loved his performances (e.g. the first two seasons of Outlander) and could never understand why he never got bigger roles.
He Is really great!
This movie never gets old!!!! Excellent acting by all actors.
The facial expressions of these actors were just phenomenal. I love looking at the three in the kitchen over and over.
And of course when Billy says tearfully, "I got in."
The length of time where not a word is spoken and the tension. Glad it was done/left this way. Perfect.

Wow! What a story! You must be so proud of her. 😊
Ahh such a lovely story 💕 I'm so glad ur daughter managed to overcome her accident & make good of her life after ballet more power to her & happiness!! 😁👍👌
That’s a lovely story.
You sound like a wonderful parent. Thanks for sharing this.
❤❤❤
One of the few movies that I can rewatch and still have the same emotions.
Hab ihn oft gesehen ~ immer wieder wunderschön.
Even though I know he's accepted at the school, I can still feel the full emotion of the scene..well done!
Moi aussi. Quel magnifique film !!!❤❤❤
Ultimate respect for his family that didn't open the letter. Family! And his dad, best dad ever!
My mother opened my acceptance letters for orchestras and camps and high schools. I walked barefoot in the snow to the mailbox to get my college letter before she did.
🙄
The silence in this scene really evokes emotion 😢
every singe time
Love this scene. They show so much respect for him by not opening the letter right away.
🙄🫠 god your generation Just sucks the joy out of the room
Totally normal to not open someone else's post.
My dad did this with my uni letter back in 2008, in almost the exact same way. Even though it was the fastest he'd ever told me something after walking into the house.
My mum would have 100% opened it, bless her.
@@luckyspurs yep, they think it's all about them.
Not a single word is uttered for the first 2:30 plus minutes, and yet SO much is said. Brilliant acting by everyone.
Every single one in this movie is perfect for his/her role❤ I just wish the movie had been MUCH longer, I didn't want it to stop!!!

Did you notice the Easter egg swans on the night table behind Billy when he read the letter?
I got shivers down my spine. 😮
This is such a phenomenally heartbreaking movie. Gotta have a whole box of tissues at the end.
I’ve seen many movies, being 74. This one is in my top five? Maybe top 3 ever. The actors are brilliant. The lad who plays Billy is note perfect. It’s heartbreaking and funny and utterly real. What an achievement.

I think Gary Lewis should have gotten more nominations for his role in this movie.
This whole scene is magnificent. If you look at all the details the house set up the clothes the acting superb. Love this movie ❤❤❤❤
Ketchup jars
1:11 tension so well written and acted. Each one of them, the father, the brother, and the grandma has different ways of dealing with it.
Great movie, exellent direction, top acting…..it had it all. Grit, fear, hate, love and the rest.
Magnifique scène. Tout est dans le jeu de regards, dans les non dits. Le père est sublime
HE FOCKIN' DID IT 😂 hes so proud
It’s Father’s Day. And the father in this movie is a giant. Beautiful movie, I cried a lot. Now I have to watch it again ❤

I trembled and the father shouted in rejoice 😢awesome feeling ✌🏾
Even though there’s barely any talking, this is a brilliantly performed scene. While he was reading the letter, I genuinely couldn’t tell whether he was disappointed or happy.
Such a great film, perfect. Timeless.
They ALL acted so effing well!
Adore this movie, especially the ending at the ballet. And what a great soundtrack!
Gary Lewis is such a brilliant actor. The most memorable actor from the movie for me. Loved him in Outlander as well.
Such amazing acting.
Like you're just watching it in person
Beautiful acting… Jamie… the dad- just wonderful.
To think that every year someone new is getting such a letter.
I saw this film in our local theatre and for reasons I could never identify, it moved me profoundly - moved me to tears, actually. I had the same reaction watching this clip. It's time to revisit the entire film . . . .
Yes the dad deserves a Oscar,great film.❤

Could that actress playing the grandmother have been any better?
I can’t remember her name but she used to be in When the boat comes in, during the 70’s we used to watch it as a family, she used to remind me of my mother as they looked very similar and my Mum was from the North West Coast of England.
Still makes me cry. Just a fantastic film.

I love this movie….and of course this scene makes me cry.
Giggled at dad's poor smoke rolling, all paper cigarette, the little fire at the end he had to blow it out.
I loved that .movie. He had to go through such a trying time and he succeeded because of his love for what he believed in.
.
Jamie was great & the father was great. Totally perfectly played!!! Wonderful🙏🏼
This a brilliant movie, I have it in my DVD collection n still like to watch it.
I know exactly how Billy felt on seeing the envelope propped up there. It was the same for me the day my A-Level results came - had to really force myself to open it, then dreaded having to unfold the paper inside to see what it said. (I got in, too.)
My mother would just open the letter right away!
The ending to this film was brilliant
