That’s a serious sprint from Cav, even if it is just the tour of Oman. Think he would have dusted better riders than what was on show with a proper lead out. Can’t wait for the sprinters’ showdown at UAE tour - with all the big boys there, gonna be spicy AF 🌶
@@shakeystephens3898 that’s where you’re wrong, Cav needs a train in the other than Ewan doesn’t. Cav won here cause it’s Oman. TDF last year Cav had a train for every win he had. Check Saudi tour rd.3 this year, Ewan almost won being 8th wheel going up hill. 200-300 meters is all Caleb.
They need to take Cav, he can win stage 2 with the right train. Sponsors will demand it, people will buy the bike, shirts etc. They put the energies into the rest of the team. Realistic this got to be the last year at the tour for him. Would be just epic for him, I am a life long fan of Cav, so I am very bias.
Nothing can ever come close to that side camera shot of this small guy in HTC gear, in the background of the shot, going past Hushovd, Petacchi etc. like they were standing still. Absolutely iconic. He just appeared out of nowhere and blew everyone away from the other side of the road, straight into the wind, from miles back
Cav looked amazing there. 20 seconds into a headwind and blowing by everyone. Would love to see him break the record at this year's Tour. We'll have to wait and see.
Cav is a reminder of what makes cycling so special as a sport. His first stage win at last years TdF was my sporting highlight of the year - a beautiful moment.
He's looking stronger than usual at this point in the season - fingers crossed he keeps upright until the Tour, and then I reckon the record will be his.
It’s crazy that quickstep wouldn’t send Cav to the tour. Granted he didn’t face the best competition last year but how can you leave off someone who won all those stages. Cav winning only 1 stage would be a far bigger story than Jakobsen winning multiple stages. With the lead out they have and if Cav is on decent form, odds are that he could luck into at least one win in the Tour
Yeah, with that historic record so tantalizingly close, there'll be a LOT of media coverage of Cav on every sprint stage. Hell, the coverage about Cav even if he doesn't win any stages would probably be more than what Jakobsen would get, perhaps even with multiple stage wins. A good young sprinter winning multiple stages in the tour is always fun to see but seldom super exciting as it happens basically every year, but the old veteran gunning for a decades-old, supposedly unbreakable record after making a huge comeback is a lot more exciting, frankly.
@@rahelwijeyekoon9403 Jakobson won’t be in the tour. Last year they said the same about Bennett that he’s the one to go for the tour and look how that went lol. Cavendish is just the better deal he brings more to the team and of course to cycling fans globally.
Cav! I remember many years ago, when Cav was on the Champs, huge HTC lead out train. He wound up skidding on broken cobbles, and missing the chance to win the final stage of the TDF. Had to be 10 years ago. And today, passing at will! He's awesome.
Been watching Cav do incredible things year after year after year. The prospect of winning another tour stage seemed to have gone years ago, but I kept on hoping. Here's hoping as I do every year for one more incredible year from Cav. GO CAV!
Definitely would love to see Cav to the Tour, I believe breaking the record is bigger even if he doesn’t win the green jersey. (Which I believe he’s capable of) It’s a great story. Jakobsen coming back from a nearly living ending crash and winning major in the Tour is quite a story as well. But still breaking Merckx record is huge.
Cav isn't racing to win in Oman. He's racing for a ticket to the TDF. Come TDF time there will be several riders with the legs to match MC...but none with the head and the heart. If he keeps this up his prospects of winning a stage or two are very good indeed...and the backlash for not taking him would make if foolish to leave him behind. Let's here some noise people!!!
Fabio's never finished a TDF, he's a big guy to be hauling through the time cuts, IMO Patrick should send them both, do a rock paper scissors to see who goes first helping Morkov tow them to the line & if they're both still there fight it out in Paris for the green jersey. I'd watch that.
Yeah Alpecin Fenix set the precedent taking 2 sprinters to hunt stages. Quickstep might make a better show of it. It's not like Alaphillipe has any realistic chance in the GC against the Slovenians.
This is feel of flow, making this look so great. Every leadout rider do their job here but start slowing down. Cavendish jumps just before everyone starts slowing down. And he also get kind of a side draft. I do some sprinting in sub pro level and know how it feels. The side draft thing at least, but also how a bad flow, or sort of missing an opportunity, and stalling and have to re-accelerate feels (because I haven't won). The drop-off point for leadout out is important but drop-off speed is wildly overlooked.
As LR’s countrymen on the grade cricketer say whatever just happened is going to happen forever. I happily jump on the overreaction train every time I never learn. I went from thinking Remco is going to win the Tour to thinking he’s a fraud in 24hours.
He's not called the missile for nothing he's short and wields power. It's not just Eddie's record he's chasing but the most overall wins of any rider is in his grasp
Impressive, 11 seconds 'in the wind' though not 20. I think his longest 'into the wind' sprint was 19 seconds on stage 13 of the 2013 Giro D'Italia. Can he win another stage at a grand tour, yes, will he, that's down to a certain amount of luck (not geting injured for one) and how things pan out for him and his team. Hoping he can get another stage win at Le Tour to overtake the greatest doper in cycling history!
Why not take both? I know. Unconventional, but think about the spoils of both of them taking a handful of victories for the team between them, and Cav claiming that record.
Cav was doing long sprints over a decade before, 19 seconds into the wind at Giro D'Italia in 2013 on Stage 13. NO-ONE does that long as a sprinter, not even Ewan!
4:57 it was 12 sec sprint actually which is the best for full sprint. Cav has full shelter and thus it was easier to accelerate for him than Gaviria. Impressive sprint though.
I can remember Cav as a neo pro for t mobile at the tour of Britain. He was special then, coming up on boonen. Now after all thus time to still have the hunger and lack of fear to still be sprinting is a different type of special. Sprinters just don't spend this long at the top.
