For me, Creature Commandos is James Gunn on autopilot mode, doing what he does best: bringing together and developing unknown and dysfunctional characters in a hilarious, exciting and emotional way. All this with the typical dark humor, good dose of violence, sexual tension and great music that make up an already well-established formula from the director. As a product itself, I think the series is quite solid, fun and above all, it serves precisely as a pleasant appetizer for the new DC Studios, capable of leaving fans happy and wanting more. But in creative terms, it doesn't differ much from what was presented before in Suicide Squad or Peacemaker, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, although it feels as fresh as repetitive. The ending was good but rushed. For me it's a solid 8/10
I think we are absolutely going to see some of these characters in Peacemaker S2 or Waller, I feel like Gunn wouldn't make such a point about the cross medium casting without demonstrating it as soon as it made sense.

She's like "What kind of example am I setting for my people?!" and even her new #1 guard was like "...bro...your people aren't here?!"
I remain disturbed about what happened to her. It was a no win situation, if she had killed the princess she would’ve been ruined as well. Gunn really made us care for these freaks. I’m legit bothered by this episode.
@@joedy3957 Same but now that I've had time to think about it a lot. I'm very happy for Gunn writing her the way he did. Makes you really care about decent people and makes you want to be more like them. Like what sucked about her? NOTHING she was a amazing person who got screwed over unfairly. You hate to see it and it makes you wanna be a better person so stuff like this happens less in the world. It's a good feeling that comes from such a sad feeling. Gunn is pretty nutz at pulling off these emotions haha.
I think making it a show was the right choice. as it allowed them to delve into the backstories of the characters, If it had been a movie, there wouldn’t have been enough time to properly explore flashbacks for all the characters maybe explore a few characters in depth, but definitely not all of them. The downside though, is the short episodes and limited number of them. It kind of forced a lot of things to feel rushed or shallow. Some moments that were obviously trying to spark drama felt a little too blunt. Take Ep4, for example with the cops arresting Weasel. The whole thing was weird cops saving kids, then shooting Weasel, ignoring the kids, and finally hauling him off. And then in Ep7, Nina’s backstory where her dad gets shot by the cop even though he’s unarmed and surrounded. I’m not sure if they were trying to make a statement about law enforcement, but I think the short runtime just made everything too obvious and rushed. Even the twist reveal delivered through Bride at the end, where everything was spelled out for the audience, seemed like a shortcut Hopefully S2 either extends the episodes or adds more of them, or else we’ll see the same issues pop up. But when it’s on, it’s really on. The humor, action, wit, and emotional depth they nailed all of that. Even though the episodes were short, they still made me care about the characters. Each one touches on the theme of “monstrosity” in their own way, showing that all of them are messed up in some sense. The Bride who struggles with the torment of being created to endure a difficult existence. The innocent Weasel who faces tragic misunderstandings due to human perception. Dr. Phosphorus whose painful past shapes him into a villain. Eric who is inherently vile. And Nina her story in the finale hit the hardest. While other characters had powers or abilities to help them fight back in some way, Nina had nothing. She was just a girl who could breathe underwater, but she couldn’t fight or hurt anyone. Waller’s comment about Nina being better off underwater was completely bs. Nina’s life was a nightmare born with disabilities, abandoned by her mom, needs to wear that heavy breathing device, bullied in school, ostracized by society to the point of living like an animal until she was captured, watching her dad die, being locked up, and finally finding friends who understood her only to die unnecessarily in the end. The world just kept punishing her. Even though I kind of saw her death coming, I was still emotionally hooked. She wasn’t a monster she was a human trapped in a monstrous form, like the Bride said. Nina was the only one with an ounce of kindness in her veins. All in all, I wouldn’t call Creature Commandos a masterpiece worthy of being the DCU’s debut but it’s still a fun, engaging, and emotional show. It does a great job setting up a world where monsters and superpowered beings coexist. On that front, it really works.
This season of Creature Commandos subverted expectations on multiple levels. I didn't think that I was going to care about these characters as much as I did, and I didn't think that the story was going to happen in the way that it did. By attempting to assassinate the princess to save the world, I thought that the commandos were bringing about the end of the world in a self-fulfilling prophecy, when that wasn't the case, and the overarching plot wasn't the most important part about this season. This wasn't about a ragtag group of people saving the world like TSS and Peacemaker, it was about the characters and that's what I loved about this show. I could see this leading directly into Peacemaker Season 2 with Rick Flag, but I don't expect any of these characters, aside from maybe Walller, showing up in Superman (Correction: James Gunn confirmed that Rick Flag will be in Superman). Also, King Shark would've been a fitting addition to the team after the events of TSS, and we never got his backstory in the DCU.
I ended up not feeling very strongly for this show. It feels like James just wanted to do like 5 Rocket Raccoon flashbacks with kind of a thin current day plot as an excuse to tie them together. Just didn't connect very much with most of the gang and didn't feel like I gained much from any of it.
At first, I was kinda upset that we didn't get a cameo from someone like David Corenswet's Superman, but now I think it's good that Gunn chose not to do that. It shows that he's laser focused on these characters and telling their story than he is with teasing stuff for the future. That is why I'm not concerned about there being other superheroes in Superman. Gunn knows exactly what characters he wants you to focus on in his stories.
People keep bringing up that the Mummy dude can heal and maybe he saved Nina. Personally, as much as I loved the character I hope they don't go that route. Especially as it lessens the stakes for the team in Season 2 as well.
Not really. His powers are not as simple as anyone dead can be brought back. If you're brains get splattered this wont work lolz. Still ways to kill chars off permanently...
Show improved as it went on. Really like Weasel, Nina, and Rick Flag. Glad Dr. Phosphorus is a villain, even with the sympathetic backstory. Still kind of ambivalent on G.I. Robot and the Bride. Do not like Eric Frankenstein and not in the way I’m supposed to not like him. I was just annoyed every time he was on screen and wanting to just hurry up through his scenes.
Honestly the finale was good but it was IMO the worst episode. Killing Nina I didn't like it and overall the flashbacks hurt it a bit for me. They were great but not for a season finale. Also the Frank and Bride thing was an easy gunshot thing and it ended there after 6 episodes of buildup. Good season but It was a great finale away from been great.
Hi Coy, really enjoying your work. Small nitpick. I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure the correct vernacular when referring to TH-cam is channel not page. You often say things like, “ join this page” and it throws me off :-) I know this is a new venture for you so thought I would mention it. Anyway keep up the good work.
I think that Bride and Phosphorus might hook up next season. With all the jokes he was trying to crack when she's around; and Bride is possibly one of the only monsters that can survive getting burned by him. Also, idk how Bride is going to break the news about Nina to GI Robot. I know he'll accept it rather fast, but I still wanted to see that conversation. Loved the world building by just name dropping major DC cities. With the Princess dead, now Pokolistan has reasons to start conflicts with other nations. And between the Dr. Phosphorus origin and Nina's father's work with Gene-Splicing on humans; they got a pretty good foundation for a Batman Beyond movie (it's probably 10-15 years too early for any Neo Gotham media from DC Studios, but I can't help but hope).
Ok seriously I want someone to tell me why this ending was good. Gorilla grodd goes unexplained with the princess's motivations. Also Frankenstein being bullet proof during flag fight but not during brides was dumb and his story felt pointless at the end.
Okay, I am coming with the unpopular opinion here. This is the first James Gunn project that disappointed me(since 2014). I just didn't get it. Characters were interesting, actors were fabulous, the comedy was fun as always and the story felt intriguing in the beginning. But the pacing and conclusion left a bad taste in my mouth. I don't feel connected with the characters, something which Mr. Gunn is so freaking good in doing.😔

Not to be dramatic but I would die for every character in this show!
Your not being dramatic😅
Even Rupert Thorne who murders kids?
Yep, awesome season.
I ended up not feeling very strongly for this show. It feels like James just wanted to do like 5 Rocket Raccoon flashbacks with kind of a thin current day plot as an excuse to tie them together. Just didn't connect very much with most of the gang and didn't feel like I gained much from any of it.
I hope you and your sate safe
😎
Show improved as it went on. Really like Weasel, Nina, and Rick Flag. Glad Dr. Phosphorus is a villain, even with the sympathetic backstory. Still kind of ambivalent on G.I. Robot and the Bride. Do not like Eric Frankenstein and not in the way I’m supposed to not like him. I was just annoyed every time he was on screen and wanting to just hurry up through his scenes.
P.S. As a result of your constant hawking, I just got all four #RyanNorth #FantasticFour trades. I will comment on your site when I read the run!!!
I think the war we see in the Superman trailer is probably tied to pokolistan with maybe bialya
Doing this with zero criticism feels like you compromised
What a great ending for a great show
I think that Bride and Phosphorus might hook up next season.
7/10 for the series. Hot take… the show should not have had frankenstein he added nothing
He was the best part
