  • @Greg_Gatsby

    Now that’s what I would call a fancy John Deere B. We had one along with a Farmall M we farmed 40+ acres with, about 55 years ago. Yes, I’m a fossil. I say your B is fancy because we had an unstyled B with the manual flywheel start. Your B is capable of pulling far more than that Cub disc. It’s not straining in the slightest. A friend of mine had a John Deere A, also with a manual flywheel start. He was impressed when I simply walked up to it, opened the petcocks, closed the choke and started it right up. I was mowing grass and the A was in the way.

    Years ago you could buy small tillage implements from Sears and Montgomery Wards. Obviously they were made for them by somebody else but this disc does look a bit like the kind of stuff they once offered.Being the fact that this B was among the final production years if he takes care of it keeps it out of the weather it'll bring a price at the higher end of the scale for tractors this size and era.

    I like those old 2 cylinder john deere's , my brother had one and we used it to skid logs and load them with the manure loader it had on the front,,, it looks to me like you'd have to have a pretty heavy disk to break through all that sod.

    Now you are talking
    I told you before I grew up on a John Deere.B. DRAGGING A DISK. We had draw bar hitch JD plows with springs in the plow tongue.. Had a chain from the plow rhtu a pully to the clutch handle. Jerk?the clutch out and stopped. The clutch handle hit me on my knee cap. Oh man... That knee still hurts in bad weather some times. Ha ..old memories.

    The early ones had 11.8 hp at the drawbar with a 4 speed transmission. The later ones more than doubled the hp with 24.6 hp at the drawbar with a 6 speed transmission. This has to be one of the later ones to be performing like it is. Maybe it has been bored and is a 30 hp tractor

    • @davidlarson6054
      @davidlarson6054 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a late model B. It has about 27.5 HP. Over the years the stroke was increased once from 5.25 to 5.5 and the bore was increased from 4.25 to4.5 and then to 4.6875 in 1947
      and the compression was increased a lot. Quite a difference in power. RPM was also increased in 1947.

  • @nelsoncreekfarm
    @nelsoncreekfarm 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    16 Pony's on the belt are only the very, very early models which are the ones that are reported on Tractordata.com.. There were 3 power increases during the production run. That late "B" is around 20+ horse power. A true comparison would be the power equivalent to a Farmall "H". It would have twice as much if it had the other two cylinders that it's missing. :) BTW, Those very early B's were on 36" rubber as the standard tire from the factory with 38's as an option.

    Glad you're impressed with the "B" but please learn more about your tractor. Pretty powerful for 16 H.P.? That's because it's rated at 27 H.P. for gas only which is what you have because it does not have the the small gas tank used on All Fuel models. 12.4 X 38 tires? That's normal but most have 11.2 X 38 on them. It does have the optional Roll O Matic front end but has wrong front wheels. They should be solid disc. 3 pt. is after market and many different styles exist but J.D. did make 3 p.t's to fit those tractors. Check your serial # because it's probably a 1950. Square axles, magneto, and the 4 bolt, 2 pc. shift quadrant indicates newer than 1948 and 49. 1951 & 52 had 4 round holes in the cast iron wheel disc. The round holes are different than the bolt holes used for your correct wheel weights. 51,52 used ignition instead of magneto's so they also had a key switch. J.D. offered ignition updates for their older tractors. Front frame weights are not for this tractor but work nicely. My 1949 and 1952 "B" handles an 8' J.D. KBA wheel disk just fine in most conditions. I do love the purrrr of a Farmall "H" but they do not have as much power, lugging ability, never offered the Roll O Matic option, or as comfortable to sit on all day. In it's day the "B" was just right for farming a 40 acre farm. I use mine for just about everything including heavy Brush Hogging with a J.D. 5' Gyro which makes her snort pretty good. Please don't butcher it up by putting an alternator on it. Both of mine have 6 volt batteries, positive ground, factory generator on them and will start in any weather temps. Keep in mind that J.D. didn't sell tractors that wouldn't start in winter conditions. Properly maintain the electrical system and it will always start like new. Enjoy your nice tractor.

    It is a real nice video. The main challenges are first, either get a disc that is wide enough or move your rear tires in closer. You are discing and leaving tire marks on your ground. The next thing to do is use a lower gear when discing new ground and go at an angle for the first pass. A comment by another person was right on. You may have to go across the grassy part at many different angles to work it up. Another method would be a 2 bottom plow. If the ground isn't moist, you may have trouble getting it worked. If it is too damp, you will probably get stuck. The disk you picked is probably for a small Ford 8n or similar tractor. The ground looks like it working up well.

    Strange difference between a 16 horse real farm tractor from back then and a 16 horse garden tractor or a sub utility tractor of today. I remember when I was a kid my uncle had a B that he left a set of cultivators on all the time. He told me he use to pull a one bottom plow. The B was a main tractor in it's day for him when he used it like one. He had an A also and an Oliver 66. Those three tractors would be running 5 bottoms altogether. He farmed a few hundred acres with those three then he bought an Oliver 770 when they came out with a 4 bottom plow. They could cover some ground. Think about it, a 6 foot pull type wheel disk behind a B could cover some ground. When my father was 14 in the mid 30's his day bought 2 new Farmall H's and he said he would plow all day with a 2 bottom plow.

    IMO It looks like it it could be an cockshutt I have 2 CS discs but the lip you were talking about for cleaning is exactly like my little 6 footer even from what I could tell the frame and everything looked the same too and for a few years they did paint them red out of 4 cockshutt implements 2 or 3 were factory red, my smaller disc that looks close to mine was red and I know one of my racks were factory red. I have another rakewhich is also red but it's kind of a parts born at the moment and have never really paid attention to see if it's the original paint or not but cockshutt did use red or their implements. it's probably not a cockshot made implement itself but from another company or subcontracted of course but man it sure looks identical especially those Bayer bearing carriers with that lip and even the frame looks identical to mine.now I have two bigger discs also one is a cockshutt but it's a 12-footer non-folding so it's completely different model and the other one is similar to the bigger one.when my grandpa was a full-time farmer he never had any luck with cockshutt tractors but he said almost every cocksholutt implement he had never broke and was made well, especially the rakes we always ran CS and never remembering breaking down except if it was from one of the operators hitting something broke down 1 rake still used to this day. But yeah a lot of the cs implements were white or just plain red

    The 51 John Deere had 24 tested drawbar horse power close to I H H , my dad and my 3 brothers had a equipment repair business and farmed 500 acres in the 50’s and 60’s . I still have a 1952 B John Deere, I am unable Drive since my stroke , anymore so I have my nephew keep it , along with a 49 IH H , F -20, B, and a cub .
    We have owned, many tractors and once repaired 100’s , But since we are in our late 70’s and 80’s let you kids have your fun

    I first steered JD B l think it was 1950. I was 4 years old and was sat in the seat and told to steer it as Dad and neighbour picked up hay bales onto a trailer. I think it was 20 hp. It had hand spun flywheel to start it. This was in North Taranaki New Zealand.

    My Dad worked 120 acres with his '51 BN. Two bottom trip plow and 9' pull behind disc. Ran 38" tires most of it's life but now has 42" tires off of an A. I don't work much acreage now but she still does fine.

    I got a 52 Model A & a 52 model B. The A runs our 10 foot International disc & the B runs our 8 foot disc. You wouldn't think a 16 hp tractor could do it but it does with ease.

    Love to see the old equipment run. Back in the days when quality was important. Think the stuff from today will be running in 60-70 years???

    I thought he could use some weight on the discs,, and maybe lengthened the top link a half a turn so the back gang is cutting the same as the front.

    A 49 B is about 24 hp. The H John Deere was about 12 hp. The B was a main tractor in its day. I have to restore mine one of these days. Your tractor looks and sounds awesome.
