Great stuff Joe... I'm old & blind... Is that car Purple? I don't mind the grills but BMW missed an opportunity when designing the rear quarters. They should be more rounded & wide like the F87 M2. (just my opinion). I need see one of these babies in person. I'm leaning towards the 4 door M3 (reminds me of futuristic E46 as far as body lines). Thanks for vlog big dog!

I really like it in this spec, sounds and looks fantastic. It’s also crazy how quick they are. The grille doesn’t work so well on a lower spec car with smaller wheels. But on this, you soon forget about it. And the other details like the rear arches and the tail lights really stand out.

I have a M340 on order, but I have no qualms with the 4 series grille, especially in this color/wheel arrangement. In fact, I think the car looks awesome.
Buy the m440i it has the 48v system too
This is the first generation of 3/4 series that I'd consider, really good looking and the interior is also perfect. Great video 👌
The grilles on the 1930's 328 flowed with the rest of the car. The issue that some have on this vehicle is that the design does not flow. The grilles looks like an after thought. I am sure that the aftermarket will create a solution for this soon enough and we will then move onto some other first world problem to complain about. Thanks for the effort to make this video. Looking forward to the more in-depth report from Joe Achilles.

The problem is not the size of the grille, it’s the design. If it had been done tastefully, then it wouldn’t have been an issue. Shame because the overall package is great, I loved my old 440i

No , the problem is the size of your head , the skull is too thick so you have less brain inside to see and appreciate the beauty of the design . BMW had done a perfect job of designing the new 4 series.

I have had my M440ix for a month now and I love the car. I get so much attention from people asking me about it and they love the grill. You are right Audi and Lexus have huge grills. The only thing I wish they had made the fender over the rear tires bolder looking. It wouldn’t take much to give it more sporty look but I wonder if they are saving it for the M4. I also did the ventilated and heated seats so my interior looks more luxury looking. The ventilated seats work really well and so happy they offer it. Did you have the $1,500 upgraded tire package? The car rides better with it and way cheaper to replace the tires then the run flats. Plus they gave me an electric pump that will seal and fill a flat tire anyway.

Sold my RS4 Audi for the M440i no regrets what so ever drives better it’s head and shoulders better than the Audi in terms off driving and looks also build Quality

You’re right about seeing these in the flesh, dropped my car in for a service today and saw one of these and they actually look a lot better close up. Still not massively keen on the grill but looking forward to seeing the M4
Every car in the show room looks good. Wait till you see it in real world scenario. There's no way I can be convinced that the grill won't look horrible when you place the damn ugly License plates in front of it.
BMW is clever in that they take the last generation M4 and basically make it into a new M440i, so people who could buy a used M4 would tend to buy a new new M440i which has about the same performance metrics with all the latest tech. I suspect this will continue. Save your money on a new M4 and keep leasing the M440i and get something near the past generation M all the time without going used for cheaper. Insurance is cheaper as well.

I agree about BMW wanting to protect the status and performance of the M3/M4 by underplaying the 440i stats. If it's anything like the previous 440i, the book figure of 320bhp was in fact closer to 350 and with the M performance upgrades the quoted 360bhp was actually closer to 380. I've no doubt this new M440i is 400bhp.
what i like is that its a nobrainer in price/performance if you dont want to spend all your money on a M4/3
with xdrive you can even get a better start then a stock M Car.
The UK number plate helps the front end on these, without a doubt. Actually looks really good

Those seats look awesome.. I’ve been shopping for them online and haven’t seen the details until this video, I thought they looked like normal black seats but I can see the contrast stitching and the little m badges, they’re awesome seats..
Cracking review Joe, always say the same regarding new BMW models.. I can’t think of many models which look good when the first pictures are released, I think the M3 F80 was the last one that got me excited but as soon as one pulls up in traffic you’re like... wow 😍. The LCI 5series, 4 series, 8 series and the new X5&7 are all gorgeous looking vehicles.

Great video Joe, it made me smile when you referred to the Audi grills and its true no one criticises it, but for me its the first thing I notice on an Audi but I have always accepted it as part of an Audi. Saying that the new generation M2 G87, due out in 2022, is suppose to be remaining true to the more horizontally style of grill. My plan is to wait for this M2 to come so I will look forward to your videos featuring this iconic model. Remember you influenced me with your spec of the M140i a few years ago and I am still totally in love with my 140.

Saw one in a dealer last week just before they covered it for their launch. The grill just looks a lot smaller in the flesh doesn't dominate the front of the car like it does in photos. I even took a photo and stood looking at the photo on my phone - I could only see the grill, then looked up at the actual car, the grill was much less noticeable. It's like an optical illusion

Hi Joe i Just received my M340i. It’s soso rapid. San Marino blue metallic Individual 6000 euro. carbon Fiber factory roof at 3300 euro. Merino red leather seats and dash 4800 euro. M performance carbon Fiber rear diffuser side skirts. 225 front non runflat tyres and 255 back tyres, Michelin Pilot sport 4 s also non run flat. I also have all te bells n whistles. Full carbon fiber mouldings and leather and alcantara steering wheelThe car finished here in Spain just under 90K but i love it
I can't ever see the front grille growing on me to the point that I like it...but perhaps to the point that I get used to it. Id still 100% choose the m340i though, most probably the touring. Love the look of the interior especially the seats.
Joe, another great video! As for the grille on this car, I've got more problems with the headlights that carried over from the 3 series, which look a bit too tame for the new grille. I think they should have redone the headlights as well.

Nice video Joe, Going back to your comment on the Stop/Start feature , As far as i'm aware the new car doesn't give you the option to de-activate it. This is the part of the new mild hybrid technology that allows you to drive almost as "coasting" mode when slowing or moving away .

Drive a Alpina B3, Joe... For me the M440i felt a bit underwhelmed and not as sporty as I expected, and that is maybe because I took the B3 for a spin three weeks before. Unfortunately there won't be a B4 from Alpina, but you need to take a B3 out. It really makes the M440i look a bit "normal".

Let it be the grills, they are not everything in BMW just like other cars in the business. In fact it’s the coolest in the business. It is the most famous car in the world that is why people talk about it so much that they forget about other cars in the industry. Now people should know how big is BMW brand to the world 🌍! God bless you BMW. You are the best car company in the world that builds really cars for every mankind not just the Super rich only.

Certain colours work better with the new shaped M3 and M4 than others. It would seem the darker the better to me.
Great review again Joe, obviously a great car. When are the car manufacturers going to be held to their quoted figures (upside or downside). I think VWgate has told us, customers and enthusiasts alike don’t want to be hoodwinked with marketing b*****ks. A tolerance of 5% dry is acceptable, anything else, they are planing games. A difference of 3.9 vs 4.5 (that’s 25%-ish) is inaccurate - end of... and good Carwow call out. We all watch the same credible content... this is next level content 👌
I haven’t watched all of this yet but just agreeing with you on the grilles - most people will be fine with them soon and the old shape will start to look old! I’ve mentioned a few times about Audi grilles so glad you did, any Audi RS without the number plate looks daft. They’re designed for a number plate to me.
you do have a point about Audi Grill's, change is hard but people will get used to it. If the grill was large, then they made it small, people will complain.
Audi "gets away" with the big grills because it actually works with their design and isn't fugly.
Well yeah Audis have WAY too big grills. Mercs as well. Haven’t seen this particular car in the flesh just yet, but the looks have warmed on me a little bit

The difference between the BMW and Audi grilles are that the Audi’s grills look nice.
I hate to say it, I really do, but that grille is growing on me slowly. Still would prefer a normal grille but BMW seems to really have nailed the rest of the car to the point where I wouldn't at all mind driving a M440i as a daily.
Yes, thats the thing. The car is best in it's class by a lot. The front end is just one compromise that has to be made. But all cars have some compromise anyway, just in other areas.

Good review.Personally the grill doesn't bother me at all and in dark colours it's much less noticeable but looks are subjective anyway,the way the car drives is much more important to me.I would take this over the equivalent Audi or Merc and you know that engine is putting out more like 405 hp in reality,hence the sub 4 seconds sprint time.

To be fair BMW quote 0-62mph (0-100km/h) in 4.5s. Most 0-60mph times quoted between 0.2-0.3s less. BMW traditionally quote conservatively, so in ideal conditions, the 3.82s is quite attainable.
I've seen one, I've also seen the 1 and 2series in person. Still have to lough about the design. Thinking about the 7series... :lol:
When I first saw the new BMW grill online, I figured that it was just a bad photoshop. Would definitely need to see in person. Not fond of the large Audi grills either.
I think you are being kind to BMW Joe. Yes, BM’s of old had big grills. But I think these have been designed primarily with the Chinese market in mind, and they have no taste! 😂 Pray to god they wont extend the grill design to other models in their range 🙏

Just came back from the dealership. Saw the car for the first time. Trust me, this grill is NOT big as compared to other car manufacturers (Audi, Lexus...). Furthermore it looks really nice when you go go for the shadow line. What you don’t want is a frame around the kidneys. Just go full black and the car is plain beautiful. Edit: I do not work for BMW 😂

I mean this is a top trim car. I won't talk about the grill anymore before is see one. But what is really strange looking to me is the shoulder/sideline. The door is completely flat... I think from the side the older models look much more aggressive.

Interesting perspective on manufacturers under-quoting sprint times to 'protect' the higher models in the range.
We humans are serious odd-balls because we are attracted to how quick we can get away from the lights. Always feeling like we
need to be competing with each other.
This is becoming more obvious as the sprint times come down and approach a limit.
The guys down the pub boasting about their car can get to 60 0.1s quicker than yours, and that's all that matters to their narrow little minds.
Seems to have a nice exhaust note, much better than the OPF 40i cars of the F series generation.
